Wilton Go Green Festival–Out; March “Zero Waste Faire”–In

At a press conference yesterday (Tuesday, Jan. 31), Wilton Go Green officials announced plans to launch a Zero Waste Faire event, to be held in March. WGG executive director Daphne Dixon described it as a brand range of interactive exhibits to help residents become involved in Wilton’s efforts to become a zero waste community.

The Zero Waste Faire will be held Sunday, March 25 at the Wilton High School Field House, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.. It will be held in lieu of the Wilton Go Green Festival, which has been held on the first Sunday in May in the Town Center and Wilton Library parking lot, for the past seven years.

“We’re really excited about the Zero Waste Faire, there is tons of energy around it and it’s going to be a spectacular event for Wilton,” Dixon says.

Dixon adds that the Zero Waste Faire will feature a broad range of interactive exhibits to help residents become involved in Wilton’s efforts to become a zero waste community. Exhibits will range from nature education, home composting and backyard farming to cooking demonstrations, zero waste shopping techniques and product demonstrations. There will also be a Zero Waste Feast, games for younger kids, entertainment, speakers and a mini film festival.

“It’s going to be very interactive and educational. We’re bringing in exhibits from museums and aquariums, so hands on education; there will be people who are selling things, so there’s opportunity to buy products for living a zero waste lifestyle; bloggers who specialize in zero waste and will talk about things like, what are alternatives to plastic straws, and how do you cook with scraps? [WGG board member and Middlebrook School culinary teacher] Heather Priest will have a cooking demonstration making things like carrot top pesto; how do you eat out on zero waste?” describes WGG board member Eve Silverman. This is a really cool opportunity to educate the whole family.”

Recycling trucks will be in the WHS parking lot for electronics recycling and paper shredding.
