SUMMARY:5K Run and Walk to Benefit Education in India
DESCRIPTION:Education is a central Wilton topic–most usually with a very local focus. But now\, one organization with ties to more remote areas in Asia is devoting some of that focus to education overseas. \nA local\, CT chapter of an organization called Ekal Vidyalaya\, made up of families with ties to India\, is organizing a fundraising effort to continue their support of growing education in rural and tribal Indian communities. Ekal Vidyalaya is a movement focused on creating and growing one-teacher schools in remote Indian villages to bring education to all children in the country. Since starting in 1986\, Ekal has become the largest grassroots level non-governmental education and development movement operating in rural India. \nEkal Vidyalaya is organizing 5K Run and Walk on Sunday\, Sept. 16 in Merwin Meadows\, starting at 9 a.m.\, to raise funds to continue their work. Registration to take part in the 5K costs $20 per adult\, $10 per child. \nThe CT chapter of Ekal was started in 2010. That year the group raised funds for 100 schools and has continued to grow 30% every year\, contributing a total of 500+ schools by 2018. There are approximately 50 families in Fairfield County who have been involved in the local effort. 500 schools are part of the 75\,000 schools created by the global effort\, impacting more than 2 million students. \nAccording to the Ekal website\, the movement aims to help eradicate illiteracy from rural and tribal India\, following a philosophy of rural development based on criteria of equality and inclusiveness across all sections of society. \nEkal says each school is managed and run for just $365 a year. The money funds teachers more than physical infrastructure or buildings. It hires and trains teachers\, and aims to utilize physical space free of cost. The website says that Ekal’s administrative costs are less than 10% of contributions and the majority of the organization’s workforce is volunteer. \nFor more information\, contact organizers via email or visit the chapter’s Facebook page.

The terrain of the 5K will highlight the diversity and beauty of the Woodcock property. \nA shorter 1K Kids Fun Run geared towards ages 6-and-up kicks-off at 8:30 a.m.. This course is appropriate for walkers and runners of all ages. Parents are welcome to accompany their children. \nAfter the Kids Fun Run families are invited to stick around for some unique post-race festivities on the nature center grounds\, including food\, music\, games\, nature crafts\, animal encounters\, and more. The nature center building\, which is home to more than 20 reptiles and amphibians\, will be open for visiting as will the natural playground and fitness trail. \nWoodcock welcomes interested businesses to inquire about sponsorship opportunities which can include inclusion on the race t-shirt\, cross-promotions and a table at the race finish. Special thanks to current sponsors\, many of whom will be in attendance:  Fairfield County Bank\, Outdoor Sports Center\, Ridgefield Pediatrics and Merrell. \nOrganizers are expecting over 150 participants\, so runners are encouraged to register in advance on the Woodcock website. The Get Smart for Wilton 5K presented by community partners in support of the Wilton Education Foundation is scheduled for Sunday\, May 24 at 9 a.m.. \nThis family-friendly charity event is a chip-timed race on a USATF certified course and attracts runners of all levels\, from elite racers to beginners\, raising visibility and funds to support the Wilton Public Schools. \nA fun\, active way to kick off the spring holiday weekend\, the event draws everyone from strollers to casual joggers\, serious runners to marathoners\, all excited be a part of this superb community-wide event. The energy at the race is palpable\, as families\, neighbors and classmates cheer one another on\, enjoying the shared camaraderie. \nThe fundraiser’s 5K route starts and ends at the Wilton High School track\, featuring Cider Mill and WHS prominently along the course. About 300 runners participate each year\, making for a high-spirited and celebratory atmosphere. High school athletes join elite local runners\, teachers\, seniors\, and moms and dads running with their kids and sometimes pushing jogging strollers\, for the run. \nCash prizes are given to the top three male and female runners\, and awards go to the top three runners in each division. Pre-registered participants receive a T-shirt. Walkers are also welcome. The terrain of the 5k will highlight the diversity and beauty of the Woodcock property. \nA shorter 1K Kids Fun Run geared towards ages 6 and up kicks off at 8:30 am and is guided by a Woodcock team member. Parents are also welcome to accompany their children. \nAfter the Kids Fun Run\, families are invited to stick around for some unique post-race festivities on the nature center grounds including snacks\, music\, games\, playground fun\, nature crafts\, and the annual live turtle race at 9:15 am.  \nWoodcock welcomes interested businesses to inquire about sponsorship opportunities which can include inclusion on the race t-shirt\, cross-promotions\, and a table at the race finish. Special thanks to current sponsors Fairfield County Bank\, Outdoor Sports Center\, and Ridgefield Running Company. \nOrganizers are expecting 150 participants\, so runners are encouraged to register in advance online. Race fees are $35 for the 5K and $20 for the Kids Fun Run. Race t-shirts will only be guaranteed to participants registered by Wednesday\, Sept. 15. Prizes will be awarded to top adult finishers.

DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Education Foundation (WEF) will once again hold its annual Get Smart for Wilton 5K at the Wilton High School track. Runners or walkers of all levels and ages are invited to participate. All proceeds benefit the Wilton Public Schools. This family-friendly charity event is a chip-timed race on a USATF-certified course that starts and ends at the WHS track. This year this is also a virtual event format for runners to run on their own. Price: $40 race fee plus $4.30 signup fee \n\nRegistration: Register for the 5K on WEF’s website.\n*Pre-registered participants receive a free t-shirt (while supplies last).\nFees: May 1-23 Adults $40; 13 and under $25\nRace-Day Registration: May 24-26 Adults $45; 13 and under $25\nVirtual Run Option (no t-shirt): $25\nAll 13 and under finishers get a College Creamery treat at the end!
