DESCRIPTION:Join the Norwalk River Watershed Association for this series of free spring migration bird walks led by expert birder\, conservationist\, master gardener\, and Wilton resident Joe Bear. Bear will lead everyone on a leisurely 2-hour walk from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. through the diverse habitats this well-known birding hot spot has to offer – open fields\, woods\, woodland edges\, pond\, and swamp – to seek out returning summer residents\, those on their way to northern breeding grounds\, and maybe a vagrant or two. Previous spring walks have yielded a wide variety of species\, including both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles\, Bobolink\, Indigo Bunting\, Scarlet Tanager\, Eastern Kingbird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Flycatchers\, Vireos\, and a variety of colorful Warblers.  You’ll get a chance to see up close Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows vying for one of the 12 nest boxes erected by Bear in and around the Little Bluestem meadow.  Bear will also talk about the new native pollinator meadow he’s been working on since 2021.\n\nPlease register using the attached link\, and park in front of the Field 6 sign at Allen’s Meadows\n\nThis event takes place:\nWed. SUMMARY:Woodcock Nature Center Invites The Community To Participate in FrogWatch USA
DESCRIPTION:Woodcock Nature Center is proud to announce its role as a participating chapter of FrogWatch USA\, the national citizen science initiative that empowers community members to help monitor and protect local frog and toad populations. \nFrogWatch USA\, a longstanding program managed by the Akron Zoo and part of a nationwide network of chapters\, invites individuals\, families\, and nature lovers to explore wetlands in their communities\, learn to identify amphibian calls\, and contribute valuable data to a scientific database used by researchers studying wetland health and amphibian populations. \nAspiring citizen scientists can register for upcoming FrogWatch USA volunteer training sessions tailored to all experience levels. These trainings will equip participants with the skills to identify frogs and toads by their unique calls\, select monitoring sites\, and record observations. \nCurrent sessions include: \n\nSaturday\, Feb. 28 – 1-2:30 p.m. at Woodcock Nature Center\nTuesday\, Mar. 3 – 6:30-8 p.m. Online via Zoom\n\nParticipation in FrogWatch USA does not require prior scientific experience just a curiosity and dedication to learning about local amphibians. \nFrogs and toads play essential roles in forest and wetland ecosystems as both predators and prey\, and serve as key indicators of environmental health. However\, many species have experienced significant declines in recent years due to habitat loss and environmental stressors. The data collected by FrogWatch USA volunteers helps scientists better understand population trends\, threats\, and conservation needs at local and national scales. \nFor more details or to register for trainings\, visit the Woodcock Nature Center website or contact Educator Tommy McCarthy at tmccarthy@woodcocknaturecenter.org.
