DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Connecticut’s Historic Gardens Day at Weir Farm National Historic Site\, where gardens and art go hand-in-hand. Weir Farm National Historic Site\, the only national park dedicated to American painting\, is a proud member of Connecticut’s Historic Gardens\, an organization committed to preserving and promoting historic gardens throughout Connecticut. \nFormer Weir Farm artist-in-residence Bonnie Beers Johnson won this year’s annual Historic Gardens Day Poster Art Contest and will be at the park with her original work. Come view the winning painting\, Weir Farm Peonies\, and learn more about the stunning historic gardens that have been inspiring artists for over a century. Park staff and Garden Gang volunteers will offer short informal talks in the Sunken Garden and Secret Garden about each garden’s history\, flowers\, restoration\, and ongoing preservation. \nIn addition to the talks\, visitors can spend an afternoon painting en plain air in the gardens using the park’s free-to-use watercolor supplies. Instructor Bobbi Eike Mullen will be available to provide tips on watercolor painting. Join us for a fun-filled Historic Gardens Day!

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Fashion Exhibition:  A Century of Style: 1860 - 1960
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the upcoming New York Fashion Week\, the Wilton Historical Society is presenting a fashion exhibition\, A Century of Style: 1860 – 1960\, which will open on Saturday\, Aug. 25\, and run through Oct. 6. Decade by decade\, the exhibition traces evolving styles in women’s special occasion garb. \nFrom an all-white cotton lace flounced dress suitable for a tea party in a garden to a Jackie Kennedy-esque beige A-line with rhinestone accented bow\, an Edwardian bridesmaid dress with train to a sophisticated wasp-waisted 1940s dress with matching custom-made suede shoes\, style trends are captured in these carefully saved clothes which had special significance to their owners. \nAlso on display are an acid-green\, silk\, high-necked gown with black netting and jet beads from the late 1880s\, which came from the Elizabeth Ambler Estate\, and was possibly worn by Betty Ambler’s grandmother. Lady Mary Crawley of Downton Abbey would have looked stunning in the black chiffon flapper dress accented with rhinestones for a night on the town. A display of purses and women’s shoes rounds out the show. \nThe exhibition was developed by the Wilton Historical Society\, Pamela Hovland\, and Megan Smith-Harris.

DESCRIPTION:Silvermine Galleries will host CT Contemporary 2018\, which includes work from a selection of galleries that represent the ever-growing contemporary art gallery scene in Connecticut. Opening simultaneously is printmaker Margot Bittenbender’s solo show\, Imagine Alice…. The two exhibitions will run from Oct. 14 to Nov. 10\, 2018\, and the public is invited to an opening reception on Sunday\, Oct. 14 from 2-4 p.m.. \nCT Contemporary 2018\nFeatured in CT Contemporary 2018 are EBK Gallery in Hartford\, Fred Giampietro Gallery in New Haven\, Melanie Carr Gallery in Essex\, and the artists of the Silvermine Guild. Each gallery will show a variety of new work. Some will focus on a single discipline or theme. Joining the event as sponsors\, Handwright Gallery and Sorelle Gallery of New Canaan will welcome visitors at their in-town New Canaan locations. Silvermine will have a map available for the public. \n“We hope to give the public a chance to see vibrant and surprising works of contemporary art from galleries they might not normally have a chance to visit\,” said Roger Mudre\, director of the Silvermine Galleries\, “and we’re delighted to have the support of Handwright and Sorelle Galleries here in New Canaan.” \nEric Ben-Kiki of EBK Gallery\, located in downtown Hartford\, will exhibit sculpture—with an emphasis on material and object. EBK artists include Donna Forma\, Peter Kirkiles\, Terrence Lavin\, Maureen McCabe\, Adam Niklewicz\, and Peter Waite. Forms include lush\, curvilinear wood; organic objects; and works that merge the industrial and the lyrical. \nFred Giampietro Gallery\, located in New Haven near the Yale University Art Gallery\, will show paintings by Riley Brewster and various works by Jonathan Waters. Brewster writes that his paintings “employ an initiating form\, which operates spatially\, metaphorically\, and structurally as a threshold space.” Waters has worked with sculptors Mark di Suvero\, Charles Ginnever\, and Richard Serra\, and his work includes both sculpture and print collage. \nMelanie Carr Gallery of Essex is presenting the artwork of seven exceptional female contemporary artists all working in Connecticut. They include Mary Dwyer\, Jennifer Knaus\, Janet Passehl\, Rachel Hellerich\, Sarah Rohlfing\, Elizabeth Gourlay\, and Ellen Hackl Fagan. All have a dedicated practice and extensive exhibition record. The focus of the work ranges from contemporary figurative to minimalist sculpture. Carr herself is a Connecticut-based artist who began her studies in visual art after serving in the United States Navy as an Operations Specialist onboard the USS Willamette (AO-180) in Pearl Harbor\, HI. \nCT Contemporary 2018 offers an exciting selection of work from some of Connecticut’s most accomplished contemporary artists and cutting-edge galleries. Silvermine Arts Center is grateful to Handwright and Sorelle Galleries in New Canaan\, and to the Co-Chairs of Silvermine Guild\, David Dunlop and Roger Mudre\, for their help sponsoring the exhibit. The exhibition runs for 4 weeks and will be on view through Nov. 10. \nImagine Alice… Prints by Margot Bittenbender\nWhile she was living in Japan\, printmaker Margot Bittenbender was surprised to find Lewis Carroll’s Alice\, with the Tenniel illustrations\, in Japanese translation in a museum store in Kanazawa. She began to see Alice everywhere—in paintings\, in dioramas by children’s book illustrators\, in manga cartoons\, and even in a café where a costumed waitress served her a drink with a lit sparkler in the glass and wished her a Happy Un-birthday.” \nAn accomplished artist and teacher who spent 12 years living and working in Asia—in Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Tokyo\, Nishinomiya\, and Bangkok—Bittenbender wondered what sort of wonderland Alice might have found if the rabbit hole had opened up there instead of in England. Stately mums\, origami butterflies\, a magical mushroom kimono\, a Jabberwock in a bamboo forest\, and many other scenes came to life in her prints. “My Alice and I went walking through Japan together\, observing and dreaming\, seeing the real and the unreal\,” said Bittenbender. Her new solo show\, Imagine Alice…\, reinvents the familiar elements of Alice’s story—rabbits and roses\, pocket watches and playing cards and more—in deftly executed intaglio prints.

Dressed for the holidays\, the Wilton Historical Society’s historic 18th and 19th century buildings are transformed into a train-lovers delight with many different model train layouts winding through tiny towns with a variety of different kinds of buildings\, tunnels and landscapes! The model train displays enchant visitors of all ages with lots of buttons to push and knowledgeable “train engineers” on hand to “talk trains.” In a special train room for the youngest guests\, Thomas the Tank Engine and Brio trains are ready for hands-on fun. The Wilton Historical Society is the place to be – come enjoy the ever-popular Great Trains Holiday Show! \nNew this year – model trains are toot\, toot\, tooting upstairs in the Toy Loft\, which is filled with the favorite toys of yesteryear\, where the very popular Alvin the Chipmunk layout can be found. \nModel train enthusiasts can see nine layouts\, including G\, HO\, O\, N\, S gauge and Lego trains. \nThe Great Trains Holiday Show opens on Friday\, Nov. 23\, 12-4 p.m.. \nAnd even more on Saturday\, Nov. 24!  Special Performance 2-3 p.m.\, puppeteer/singer/storyteller Tom H. Hanford. No charge \nJoin Tom Hooker Hanford as he performs seasonal songs and stories for kids at the Opening Weekend of the Great Trains Holiday Show! His programs combine music\, storytelling\, and colorful painted masks. In recent years Tom has taken his interactive shows for children to Old Sturbridge Village and The Berkshire Museum in Massachusetts\, Clermont State Historic Site\, The Farmers Museum\, Olana\, and Erie Canal Village in New York State\, and many other museums\, historic sites\, festivals\, schools and libraries. \nSee the Great Trains Exhibit on Saturday (10 a.m.-4 p.m.)\, and leave some time for the kids to enjoy an art project. SUMMARY:Bankwell Pet Adoption Project Kick-Off Reception
DESCRIPTION:Bankwell is holding its Pet Adoption Project official kick off reception this Wednesday\, April 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Bankwell in Wilton branch\, located at 47 Old Ridgefield Rd.. \nJoin Bankwell in bringing awareness to the homeless pet population through the lens of photographer Michael Bagley. The event will feature numerous photographs of adoptable dogs\, cats and bunnies currently living in local animal shelters. This event is free and open to the community (great for all ages)\, and the rescues will be there with some of the animals featured in the project. \nThis is the third year for the program\, which lives year-round on the Bankwell website\, with the mission to create awareness about the many dogs and cats in need of homes at animal shelters throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties. \n\n\n\n\nBankwell also will be collecting new pet supplies at each of its Fairfield and New Haven County branches through June 30 to benefit local shelters. DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library and the Wilton Chamber of Commerce are inviting individuals\, families\, groups\, organizations and businesses to submit gingerbread or other edible models of Wilton houses or buildings to be put on display in the library. \nDrop off dates and times for the creations are Sunday\, Dec. 1\, from 1-4:30 p.m. and Monday\, Dec. 2\, from 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m.. \nEntries will be judged in two age groups by prominent community members. The groups are 12 and under; and ages 13 to adult. \nThis year\, in conjunction with Wilton Library’s 125th anniversary\, the contest celebrates the past\, present and future of Wilton. Residents are encouraged to create an edible model of a house\, building\, public space or any other aspect of Wilton to represent the town’s past\, present and imagined future. Winners will be judged in three categories–Most Whimsical\, Best Historical Wilton Place\, and Most Visionary Design of a Wilton Place. \nFrom Dec. 3-Dec. 16\, visitors to the library also can vote for their favorite models. Winners will be announced Dec. 18 at 4 p.m.. \nWinning submissions\, including the Community Favorite\, will be awarded Wilton Chamber gift certificates courtesy of Fairfield County Bank. DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Arts Council is seeking photographers of all ages\, including youths and high school students\, to enter its 22nd annual photography exhibit\, “FOCUS ’20\,” to be held from March 7-27\, 2020 at the Wilton Library. Photographers are allowed to enter up to two of their photos\, which may be film or digital images in color or black and white\, and may be enhanced by darkroom or digital techniques. \nFOCUS ’20 entries will be judged by a panel of notable area photographers in three divisions:  Adult (professional and amateur combined)\, High School Student (9-12 grade) and Youth photographers (pre-elementary through 8th grade). Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded for:  Best of Show (which is open to all); first through fifth places in the adult division; and first\, second and third place in each of the high school and youth divisions. Ribbons will also be presented for honorable mention in each of the divisions. \nTo enter photos in FOCUS ‘20\, photographers may drop off their work at the Wilton Library on Saturday\, Feb. 29\, from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; and on Sunday\, March 1\, from 1:30-4:30 p.m.. Entry dimensions must be at least 8″ x 10″ framed and wired for hanging; there is no limit as to maximum size. SUMMARY:Transforming Tradition:  Japanese and Korean Contemporary Craft  (Online Exclusive)
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Asia Art Week 2020 this March\, browngrotta arts has collated contemporary works by 12 artists born in Japan and Korea for an online exhibition\, “Transforming Tradition:  Japanese and Korean Contemporary Craft.” The works include ceramics\, weavings\, baskets and sculptures made of paper and silk. \nNotable in the exhibition are paper sculptures by Naomi Kobayashi and an elegant silk thread assemblage by her late husband\, Masakazu Kobayashi. The couple often collaborated\, working on installations that combined elements created by each of them. \n“These works express a shared vision and such common themes as the tranquility of nature\, the infinity of the universe and the Japanese spirit\,” Masakuzu once explained. “Naomi and I work in fiber because natural materials have integrity\, are gentle and flexible. In my own work\, I search for an equilibrium between my capacity as a creator and the energy of the world around me.” \nKeiji Nio’s interlaced wall work is inspired by a haiku\, “Rough Sea of Sado\,” from Japanese haiku master Matsuo Basho’s haiku series. In it\, Basho describes the deep blue waves of the Sea of Japan as they are reflected in the night sky and the light blue waves hitting the beach. The work incorporates ribbons on which Nio has screened images from the sea and tiny pebbles from the shore. Nio is a faculty member at the Kyoto University of Art & Design\, who combines industrial and natural materials in his works to make statements about nature and man’s relationship to the world. \nSeveral ceramics by Yasuhisa Kohyama\, are included in Transforming Tradition. Kohyama is a renowned Shigaraki potter who uses ancient techniques to explore new forms. He gained widespread attention in Japan in the 60s when he built one of the first anagama kilns since medieval times. Collectors and museums have been quick to acquire his works\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Cleveland Museum of Art\, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam\, the Gardiner Museum of Art in Toronto\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Museum of Art and Craft in Hamburg and the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Shiga\, Japan. Kohyama’s work graces the cover of Contemporary Clay:  Japanese Ceramics for the New Century by collectors Alice and Halsey North and curator Joe Earle. \nBamboo sculptures by Jiro Yonzawa are also part of browngrotta arts’ exhibition. Yonezawa has been recognized with the Cotsen Prize\, a commission from Loewe to work in leather and inclusion in the prestigious Japan Nitten National Fine Arts Exhibit. Yonezawa has explained his work:  “Bamboo basketry for me is an expression of detailed precision. These baskets represent a search for the beauty and precision in nature and a way to balance the chaos evident in these times.” \nKorean artist Chang Yeonsoon\, who creates ethereal works of starched indigo\, was Artist of the Year at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul in 2008. SUMMARY:Call for entries in FOCUS '20
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Arts Council is seeking photographers of all ages\, including youths and high school students\, to enter its 22nd annual photography exhibit\, “FOCUS ’20\,” to be held from March 7-27\, 2020 at the Wilton Library. Photographers are allowed to enter up to two of their photos\, which may be film or digital images in color or black and white\, and may be enhanced by darkroom or digital techniques. \nFOCUS ’20 entries will be judged by a panel of notable area photographers in three divisions:  Adult (professional and amateur combined)\, High School Student (9-12 grade) and Youth photographers (pre-elementary through 8th grade). Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded for:  Best of Show (which is open to all); first through fifth places in the adult division; and first\, second and third place in each of the high school and youth divisions. Ribbons will also be presented for honorable mention in each of the divisions. \nTo enter photos in FOCUS ‘20\, photographers may drop off their work at the Wilton Library on Saturday\, Feb. 29\, from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; and on Sunday\, March 1\, from 1:30-4:30 p.m.. Entry dimensions must be at least 8″ x 10″ framed and wired for hanging; there is no limit as to maximum size. Please see the Wilton Arts Council’s website for the entry form and FAQs. \nFor each photo entered in the exhibit\, the fee is $5 for youths\, $10 for high school students and Wilton Arts Council members\, and $20 for non-members. Photographers are welcome to join the Wilton Arts Council at the time of drop-off. \nA reception and awards ceremony will be held on Friday\, March 13\, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Wilton Library and is open to the public. Photos will be for sale throughout the exhibit unless otherwise designated\, and the Wilton Library will receive a 20% commission on the sale price of each photograph sold.

DESCRIPTION:browngrotta arts is pleased to announce California Dreamin’ – an exclusive online exhibition highlighting the seminal role of the West Coast in the contemporary fiber art movement\, and the significant role of California artists in browngrotta arts’ exhibition history\, on view from May 11 – 31 on Artsy. \nA forerunner in the field\, browngrotta arts has been dedicated to researching\, documenting and raising awareness of Modern Craft through exhibitions and collectively recording the narrative of the movement through print catalogs for over 30 years\, contributing in no small feat to preserving the continuity of the field. \nCalifornia Dreamin’ highlights seven artists — Ed Rossbach\, Katherine Westphal\, Marion Hildebrandt\, Judy Mulford\, Deborah Valoma\, Adela Akers and Sylvia Seventy — who were the subject of three published catalogs: Ed Rossbach and Katherine Westphal (Vol 6\, 1993); Three California Basketmakers: Marion Hildebrandt Judy Mulford Deborah Valoma (Vol 20\, 1998); Adela Akers and Sylvia Seventy (Vol 26\, 2000). SUMMARY:Women’s Suffrage Centennial in Wilton:  Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck\, and the Vote [Exhibition]
DESCRIPTION:2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing and protecting the right to vote for (some) women. Pre-COVID\, the State of Connecticut launched the CT Women’s Suffrage Commission and encouraged municipalities and non-profits to work together to celebrate this anniversary.  A number of Wilton organizations planned events and activities to celebrate this important milestone. Originally scheduled to run as an in-person exhibit from June-September\, this exhibition has transitioned online.  \nOn November 2\, 1920\, Hannah Raymond Ambler proudly wrote “It is my first vote” in her daily journal. This triumphant and poignant phrase\, underlined for emphasis\, captures the voice of just one of the women in Wilton who campaigned for suffrage. Grace Knight Schenck\, a force to be reckoned with in the community\, was a leader who organized the first women’s suffrage meeting in town. The stories of these two women are at the heart of the Wilton Historical Society’s online exhibition “Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote\,” which joins the national recognition of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. \nThe exhibition will explore objects\, images\, texts\, historic costumes\, vignettes\, and music to illustrate the activities and contributions of Wilton suffragists\, with a special focus on Hannah Ambler and Grace Schenck—placing the local story in state and national context. \nTheir last names may be well known in Wilton–Ambler Farm and Schenck’s Island are local landmarks–but their individual lives are not. This exhibition will shine a light on Hannah\, Grace\, and other Wilton women who became citizens at last in 1920. \nCitizens at Last:  Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote will be available indefinitely on the Wilton Historical Society website. \nThis exhibition was made possible with the generous support of the Elizabeth Raymond Ambler Trust. \n
