Photographers may enter up to two of their photos\, which may be film or digital images in color or black and white and may be enhanced by darkroom or digital techniques.  \nFOCUS ’23 entries will be judged by a panel of notable area photographers in three divisions: Adult (professional and amateur combined)\, High School Student (grades 9 – 12)\, and Youth photographers (pre-elementary through 8th grade). Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded for: Best of Show (which is open to all)\, first through fifth places in the adult division\, and first\, second and third place in each of the high school and youth divisions. SUMMARY:Lives and Landscapes: Art from the Permanent Collection of the Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:From the town’s beginnings in the early 18th century\, work depicting the people and landscapes of Wilton have reflected the ever-changing artistic tides of subject matter\, materials and styles of the next three centuries. The new exhibition\, Lives and Landscapes: Art from the Permanent Collection of the Wilton Historical Society\, opening on June 10\, explores highlights of the art collection from the colonial era to the 1970s. Throughout that time\, Wilton has served as inspiration for a wide variety of creators. Whether simply passing through or ensconced as a long-time resident\, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression or fulfilling commercial contracts\, Wilton’s artists produced a diverse body of work. The exhibition runs through October 29. \nMembers of Wilton’s colonial first families\, such as the Lamberts\, Beldens\, and Grummans\, commissioned portraits to help display their wealth and power. The two works on display by itinerant painter Ralph Earl were prized – Earl’s patron’s included founding father Roger Sherman – as were the portraits produced by Gilbert Stuart Newton\, nephew of the renowned Gilbert Stuart. Gilbert Stuart is best known for his iconic images of George Washington. \nOver time\, landscapes rose in popularity. Wilton’s sparsely populated countryside of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries provided beautiful scenery to be captured on canvas and a quiet place to work undisturbed\, while Wilton’s proximity to the cultural hub of New York City ensured a large audience was easily accessible. Artists working in the new Impressionist style\, seeking vistas to be painted “en plein air” populated the area – one of the leaders being J. Alden Weir and his “great good place” Weir Farm. Others like H.G Thomson followed soon after. In the early to mid- 20th century\, a new group of artists emerged. Many congregated in the Silvermine area enjoying both the setting and the proximity to the city. Works produced in Wilton could quickly be placed in any of New York’s numerous museums and galleries. \nTown landmarks\, such as the 1790 Wilton Congregational Church painted in an impressionistic style “en plein air” by Robert Emmett Owen and the 1726 Lambert House by H.G. Thompson\, are beautifully depicted. Other artists represented in the exhibition include Richard Daggy\, sculptor A. Phimister Proctor\, and Hillary Longmuir. \nLives and Landscapes explores Wilton’s artistic legacy through a selection of rarely seen work from Wilton Historical’s permanent collection. These works capture something of the personality of the town through the faces and places depicted. They tell the stories of not only the subject matter of the piece\, but the story of a town. \nWilton Historical Members: Free; Non-members $10

Join us on Saturday\, May 7 for the Opening and Artists Reception or during the rest of the week\, May 8-15. \nThe 42 artists from 12 countries included in Crowdsourcing the Collective: a survey of textile and mixed media art illustrate the vitality of art textiles\, ceramics and mixed media. The new prominence of these art forms finds them the subject of exhibitions in major museums\, intermixed with paintings and traditional sculpture in ways unthinkable a decade ago. Many of the artists in Crowdsourcing began working in the ‘80s and ’90s\, when craft and fiber art were not well recognized; some have been working since fiber art’s first heyday in the ‘60s and ’70s. \nThe exhibition reflects an astonishing range of materials and techniques\, tapestries of silk and agave\, sculptures of seaweed\, seagrass and willow\, wall works made of sandpaper\, hemp and horsehair\, and ceramics of Shigaraki clay will all be included. The scope of these artists’ preoccupations is on view here\, too — from environmental concerns\, to questions of the cosmos and identity\, to explorations of material and process. The new prominence of these art forms finds them the subject of exhibitions in major museums\, intermixed with paintings and traditional sculpture in ways unthinkable a decade ago. Many of the artists in Crowdsourcing began working in the ‘80s and ’90s\, when craft and fiber art were not well recognized; some have been working since fiber art’s first heyday in the ‘60s and ’70s. \nThe exhibition reflects an astonishing range of materials and techniques\, tapestries of silk and agave\, sculptures of seaweed\, seagrass and willow\, wall works made of sandpaper\, hemp and horsehair\, and ceramics of Shigaraki clay will all be included. The scope of these artists’ preoccupations is on view here\, too — from environmental concerns\, to questions of the cosmos and identity\, to explorations of material and process. It includes new work\, works from earlier periods\, and work from artists we have invited specifically for this exhibition. Featuring 172 artists\, the catalogs have collectively recorded a narrative of Modern Craft providing a rare historical insight and a unique chronicle of an often-overlooked art field that is currently being reappraised and appreciated with recent surveys at the Tate London\, the MoMA\, and the Whitney Museum. \nThe publication of the 50th catalog of the same title\, will continue the tradition with full-color exhibition photos by the co-founder of browngrotta arts\, Tom Grotta. \nOn view beginning Saturday\, Sept. 12 from 1-6 p.m.\, and Sept. 13-20 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

SUMMARY:Women’s Suffrage Centennial in Wilton:  Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck\, and the Vote [Exhibition]
DESCRIPTION:2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing and protecting the right to vote for (some) women. Pre-COVID\, the State of Connecticut launched the CT Women’s Suffrage Commission and encouraged municipalities and non-profits to work together to celebrate this anniversary.  A number of Wilton organizations planned events and activities to celebrate this important milestone. Originally scheduled to run as an in-person exhibit from June-September\, this exhibition has transitioned online.  \nOn November 2\, 1920\, Hannah Raymond Ambler proudly wrote “It is my first vote” in her daily journal. This triumphant and poignant phrase\, underlined for emphasis\, captures the voice of just one of the women in Wilton who campaigned for suffrage. Grace Knight Schenck\, a force to be reckoned with in the community\, was a leader who organized the first women’s suffrage meeting in town. The stories of these two women are at the heart of the Wilton Historical Society’s online exhibition “Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote\,” which joins the national recognition of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. \nThe exhibition will explore objects\, images\, texts\, historic costumes\, vignettes\, and music to illustrate the activities and contributions of Wilton suffragists\, with a special focus on Hannah Ambler and Grace Schenck—placing the local story in state and national context. \nTheir last names may be well known in Wilton–Ambler Farm and Schenck’s Island are local landmarks–but their individual lives are not. This exhibition will shine a light on Hannah\, Grace\, and other Wilton women who became citizens at last in 1920. \nCitizens at Last:  Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote will be available indefinitely on the Wilton Historical Society website. \nThis exhibition was made possible with the generous support of the Elizabeth Raymond Ambler Trust. \n
