SUMMARY:34th Annual American Artisan Show at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Historical Society will host the 34th annual American Artisan Show on Friday\, Nov. 8 and Saturday\, Nov. 9. The show runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days. \nThe event is an important benefit for the Society\, supporting its education and historic preservation mission. More than 30 highly-skilled artisans from across the country will be presenting their hand-crafted contemporary and traditional furnishings and wearables. Furniture\, folk art\, pottery\, fine leather goods\, Nantucket-style baskets\, candles\, Windsor chairs\, art\, tavern signs\, fine jewelry\, photography\, and much more will be available for purchase. \nThe show is set in the Society’s historic 18th and 19th century buildings at 224 Danbury Rd./Rte. 7. New this year\, some artisans will be demonstrating their process on both days of the show. \n“People love to see how something is made – a sculptor and a furniture maker will be demonstrating in the 1860 Abbott Barn\, a blacksmith will be working in the historic blacksmith shop\, as well as a ceramicist in the gallery\,” Kim Mellin\, co-director of the Society\, commented. In addition\, Friday will be “Sip and Shop” day\, with something bubbly to enjoy while browsing. \nAdmission to the show is $10.00. \nA festive Preview and Silent Auction will kick off the show on Thursday\, Nov. 7 from 6-8 p.m. \, giving guests the first opportunity to browse and buy while enjoying fine hors d’oeuvres provided by Sarah Bouissou Catering at Bernard’s of Ridgefield. A signature cocktail will be provided by 5th State Distillery of Bridgeport. The Silent Auction will feature a series of exceptional and unusual “Experiences\,” in addition to unique objects contributed by the artisans. Tickets are $125. The Preview Party Committee is chaired by Katy Williams\, a trustee of the Society. \nJudy Higby chairs the Show. Selecting the skilled makers are volunteers and trustees Moira Craw and Catherine Romer\, plus Mellin. New to the show this year are contemporary leather goods made by Leitz Leather; fiber artist Sherry Dwivedi’s woven textiles; LMNT Jewelry; Mark A. The queen and wealthiest woman in the world\, Eleanor of Aquitaine\, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband\, King Henry II. Let out only for holidays\, the play centers around the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over both a kingdom and King Henry’s paramour during the Christmas of 1183. You won’t be able to resist moving to the familiar beat of “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” and “Hakuna Matata.” \nTickets are available online for $13.50 until Friday\, Nov. 22  and at the door for $14.00 at Middlebrook School (cash and checks only). SUMMARY:Music on the Hill:  Sounds of the Season
DESCRIPTION:Join Music on the Hill for their gorgeous holiday concert\, “Sounds of the Season.” Featured this year will be the Jubilate Ringers\, the Festival Chorus\, and our new Community Children’s Chorus. David H. Connell and Ellen Dickinson conduct. Our program of festive music includes choral works by contemporary Scandinavian composers Kim André Arnesen and Morten Lauridsen\, as well as “The Heavens Delight” by New Canaan composer Gwyneth Walker. Other selections include gorgeous seasonal pieces such as “Cantate Domino” (Hassler)\, “Jesus Christ the Apple Tree” (Poston)\, “What Sweeter Music Can We Bring?” (Berger) and the French traditional carol “Masters in This Hall.” \nThe bell ringers will perform a hauntingly beautiful arrangement of the plainchant melody Divinium mysterium (“Of the Father’s Love Begotten”)\, and will accompany both children’s and adult choruses for more familiar carols\, including a medley arranged by Dickinson. \nWe will all sing favorite carols with the majestic St. Matthew’s organ as accompaniment. DESCRIPTION:According to Old Sturbridge Village\, “The tin business in New England began in the mid-1700s but grew most rapidly after 1820. Tinware competed successfully with the more traditional products of redware potters. Tin shop owners purchased tinplated sheet iron imported from England\, shaped it into a variety of forms\, and distributed finished goods wholesale through peddlers and country stores\, and at retail from their shops. Pails\, colanders\, dippers\, dish kettles\, funnels\, measures\, and pans of all kinds were in greatest demand. Lanterns\, footstoves\, teapots\, coffeepots\, tin kitchens\, skimmers\, and sconces were other common utensils produced for house\, farm\, and shop.” \nAt this Wilton Historical Society Art of Tin Punching Workshop for Kids on Saturday\, Jan. 11\, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.\, museum educator Katherine Karlik will talk about tin punching\, and about William and Edward Pattinson\, brothers who settled in Connecticut around 1740 and established the first tin shop in America. The workshop project is making a rectangular placard which can be used as a wall hanging\, featuring a simple dot and dash design. Children will help make their own snack. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child; non-member cost is $15 per child. With musical direction by Zachary Kampler and choreography by Jackie DiDonato\, the musical will run April 24-May 9\, 2020. Strong singers\, dancers\, and actors from ages 7 to 70 are encouraged to audition. \nEvita charts the young and ambitious Eva Peron’s meteoric rise to sainthood. Set in Argentina between 1934-1952\, the musical follows Eva Duarte on her journey from poor illegitimate child to ambitious actress to\, as wife of military leader-turned-president Juan Peron\, the most powerful woman in Latin America\, before her death from cancer at age 33. The events in Evita’s life are presented in song and commented on by the show’s narrator\, Che. SUMMARY:Call for Singers: Music on the Hill Spring Concert 3/22
DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill‘s spring concert\, “Song is a Strong Thing\,” is gearing up with rehearsals. We’d love for you to join us as part of our Festival Chorus. This is a chance to make beautiful music with approximately 40 adult singers who share in their love of high-quality choral singing and music-making. \nNo auditions are required\, although some experience might prove useful; try it out\, sing with us and stay if you like it! Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights\, 7-9 p.m.\, from Feb. 11-March 17\, with the concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday\, March 22. SUMMARY:Remembering Dave:  A Brubeck Family Album
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz legend – and Wilton’s own — Dave Brubeck\, the Wilton Historical Society will present a special exhibit\, Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album. Opening Friday\, Feb. 21\, the exhibition will run through April 18\, 2020. \nWhen he bestowed upon the jazz great the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor at the White House in 2009\, President Barack Obama stated\, “In order to understand America\, you have to understand jazz\, and in order to understand jazz\, you have to understand Dave Brubeck.”  As a pianist\, bandleader and composer\, Dave Brubeck (1920-2012) is widely acknowledged as one of America’s most significant post-swing era jazz musicians\, creating a body of music that was bold and accessible. \nAll are invited to the opening reception on Friday\, Feb. 21\, from 4-6 p.m. (no charge). The exhibition incorporates material from the Dave Brubeck:  Jazz Ambassador show\, which detailed his illustrious 70-year career and was presented at Jazz at Lincoln Center soon after Brubeck’s death\, and highlights other facets of his life such as his impact as a composer\, a performer\, a civil rights activist and as family man. \nThe Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album exhibition presents additional material that speaks to Dave’s life in Wilton with his wife Iola\, and six kids\, including musicians Darius\, Chris and Dan. Growing up on a vast ranch in California\, he learned to ride\, how to be a cowboy; visitors will be able to see a Western-style saddle that belonged to his father\, as well as Dave’s cowboy hat. A highlight of the exhibition is the opportunity to see a new short film produced by the Brubeck family which contains rare footage of “Cowboy Dave.” Another section of the film shows Wilton composer\, lyricist\, pianist\, and educator Eugenie Rocherolle interviewing fellow musician Dave Brubeck. \nEntrance is free for Wilton Historical Society members; entry is $10 for non-member adults\, and free for children under 18. \nDave Brubeck 100 is the world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of Dave Brubeck\, the jazz composer\, pianist\, cultural ambassador\, and visionary musician\, which will take place on Dec. 6\, 2020.
