SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Weaving Workshop for Kids:  Making a Potholder
DESCRIPTION:According to the historians at Colonial Williamsburg\, “Then as now\, Americans required fabrics for clothes\, towels\, sheets\, blankets\, sails\, and dozens of other items made of wool\, cotton\, silk\, linen\, and hemp and bought them from textile manufacturers. Until the Revolution\, British goods poured into the American market\, and most people wore clothes made of English textiles. English or American\, weavers typically learned their trade through apprenticeship\, which focused mostly on operating a loom. Weavers had to know how to prepare the loom and how to run and to maintain it. During the Revolution\, when Americans could not get English goods\, weaving became a necessity and a patriotic duty.” \nWeaving will be explored at this workshop for kids. Museum educator Laurie Walker will show the kids the “loom room” in the 1740 Betts House\, and explain weaving with flax and wool. For a workshop project\, the kids will make a woven pot-holder\, and enjoy a snack of lattice-pattern sugar cookies. \nThe workshop is suggested for ages 6-12. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10/child\, maximum $25/family; cost for non-members is $15/child\, maximum $35/family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nFrom the Merriam-Webster Dictionary:  “A single woman who is old enough to be married but isn’t—and isn’t likely to get married—is sometimes called a spinster. The word has an old-fashioned and dated feel to it\, and because of that it can carry a whiff of impoliteness in certain circumstances. But in previous centuries\, spinster was a valuable word that didn’t carry any such connotation. During the late Middle Ages\, married tradeswomen had an easier time obtaining higher-status\, higher-income work than their unmarried peers. Unmarried women ended up with lower-status\, lower-income jobs like combing\, carding\, and spinning wool—hence ‘spinster.’ \n“When spinster first entered English in the mid-1300s\, it referred to a woman who spun thread and yarn. . . . Two historical facts led to spinster’s evolution: the fact that most spinners in the Middle Ages were women\, and the fact that it was common in legal documents to use one’s occupation as a sort of surname (which is why we have Smiths and Bakers and Tanners and so on). Women who spun yarn or thread were given the title Spinster in legal documents . . . By the 17th century\, spinster was being used in legal documents to refer to unmarried women.”

SUMMARY:The John Rhodes Jazz Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 43rd year\, the annual John Rhodes Jazz Symposium will be held Friday\, Feb. 22 at Wilton High School in The Little Theater. This event\, an assembly of high school jazz bands from across Fairfield County\, is known and loved for its display of enormous musical talent and rush of crowd-thrilling performances. The symposium is open to the public and free of charge. All are welcome. \nThe first of the two sessions will start at 3:30 p.m. and run until 6 p.m.; the second session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.. Following the student performances\, Fairfield County’s own Berkshire Jazz Orchestra will take the stage for a special guest performance that will include several Stan Kenton numbers. \nWilton High School band director Nick Loafman is looking forward to another year of inspiring jazz performances. “There is always so much talent on display at our annual jazz symposium. It is so fun and rewarding to hear so many students from different schools playing this great music\,” he says. \nParticipating in the symposium this year will be 10 bands from a number of Fairfield County high schools\, including Westhill\, King School\, Bethel\, Norwalk\, McMahon\, Newtown\, and Weston. Wilton High School will feature two of its jazz bands at the event—Jazz I and Jazz II. \nThe annual symposium is a cherished tradition for local jazz students. It offers them the opportunity to perform on stage as well as to receive critical feedback from an academic panel. “It is always excellent to have student musicians perform for each other in an educationally focused\, non-competitive setting\,” Loafman says. “The students always learn a great deal by performing and listening to each other.” \nIn total\, approximately 200 passionate young jazz musicians are expected to assemble for this event to share their talents and bring great entertainment to Wilton. Musical selections will range in style from traditional big band swing to Latin to ballads to contemporary jazz. \nAlso looking forward to this event is Troy Williams\, Wilton High School’s newest band director. This will be his first year at the symposium. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about this event\,” he says. “I’m excited to hear the other jazz bands coming from near and far.” \nLoafman and Williams are especially pleased to welcome back to Wilton the Berkshire Jazz Orchestra. This regional jazz group\, organized in 1987\, comprises active performers and educators from all over Fairfield County. \n“We feel so honored to have these great musicians perform here in Wilton for the students and the community\,” Loafman says. “If you love jazz\, then this will be a real treat.”

DESCRIPTION:According to Early American stenciling expert Suzanne Korn\, “The history of decorative arts in America includes a colorful chapter between the years of 1778 and 1840\, when itinerant wall stencilers roamed New England country roads\, painting their colorful folk art in homes\, inns\, and taverns along the way.” \nWilton Historical Society museum educator Laurie Walker will discuss the simple\, colorful folk art\, and how and where it appeared\, and will show participants a stenciled oil-cloth rug in the Fitch house dining room as an example. The workshop project is a painted and stenciled wooden picture frame. The children will help make their own snack of applesauce. \nThe workshop is suggested for ages 6-12. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10/child\, with a maximum of $25/family; the cost for non-members is $15/child\, with a maximum of $35/family. Often\, his only payment for stenciling the walls in a home would be his food\, drink and lodging. We know that some of the early stencilers were farmers by trade\, so they would practice their craft during the winter months. Consequently\, they often toiled and traveled under harsh conditions. Even when the stenciler secured work\, and was safely off the cold\, snowy roads\, it was not unlikely that many of the rooms he was employed to decorate had no heat! However\, when his job was done\, and it was time to move on to the next town\, the lively and colorful folk art that he would leave behind would brighten and warm even the coldest of rooms with a cheerful and homespun glow! Beautiful flower baskets\, graceful willow trees\, wildflower sprays and simple vines plump with berries would adorn the walls in a wash of color. SUMMARY:Ukrainian Egg (Pysanky) Decorating Workshop for Adults and Kids
DESCRIPTION:Learn the colorful and venerable craft of decorating eggs in the Ukrainian style\, known as pysanky (their name is derived from the Ukrainian verb meaning to write). Expert egg decorator Susan Clark will lead the Wilton Historical Society workshop for adults and children. This ancient craft uses symbols and motifs to create a jewel-like egg. Intricate designs can be created with geometric forms\, or with more naturalistic\, flowing patterns. Participants will be using a kistka\, a pointed implement a bit like a pen\, filled with beeswax and heated\, to draw designs on the eggs between bathing them in colored dye. Decorate eggs in a traditional design\, or create your own. \nThe workshop is for adults and children ages 9 and up. Children ages 6-8 must be accompanied by adult. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $20; for non-members is $25. SUMMARY:Choral Concert:  Music of the French Baroque
DESCRIPTION:Wilton’s own Music on the Hill presents an exquisite choral experience that will include the rarely performed works of French Baroque composer Marc Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)\, including his “Te Deum\,” “Regina Caeli\,” and “Messe a 8 voix et 8 violons et flutes.” The festival and chamber choruses of Music on the Hill will be joined by organ\, trumpets\, strings and timpani in the acoustically rich and resonant church sanctuary. \nIt will be a special afternoon of music\, inspired by the lovely gardens and buildings of the Palais de Versailles\, where many of these musical gems were composed and/or originally performed in Charpentier’s lifetime. Living at virtually the same time as the Sun King\, Louis XIV (1638-1715)\, Charpentier and his music are representative of a distinctive era in French history\, when absolute monarchy reigned\, and France was widely recognized for its rich\, indulgent and breath-taking culture and arts–many say the greatest in French history.

DESCRIPTION:Eight area artists will be exhibiting at Wilton Library for the library’s May art exhibition. The artists are Sally Aldrich\, Ridgefield; Rich Alexander\, Mt. Kisco; Sharon Cavagnolo\, Chappaqua; Hans Fischer\, Ridgefield; Jennifer Moné Hill\, Danbury; Nancy Moore\, Ridgefield; Erin Nazzaro\, Redding; and Kris Davenport Toohey\, Westport. \nTheir works represent a wide variety of media and subject matter choices. The opening reception on Friday\, May 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through May 31. A majority of the works will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library.

DESCRIPTION:Based on the stories and characters by Damon Runyon\, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows\, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile\, his girlfriend and nightclub performer\, Adelaide\, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler\, Sky Masterson\, for the dough\, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary\, Sarah Brown\, as a result. \nGuys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana\, Cuba\, and even into the sewers of New York City\, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong. The students and production team alike have been hard at work since February to create this electrifying production\, which pulses with excitement as a group of newsboys strike to be reasonably compensated for their daily labor. High energy dancing and feel-good songs by legendary composer Alan Menken offer toe-tapping delight as they guide the audience through this thrilling narrative. \nThe story is based on the real life newsies strike of 1899. It centers around charismatic newsboy Jack Kelly (Jack Parrotta) and his new friends\, siblings Davey (Ryan Lynn) and Les (Blake Baumel). After the conniving publisher Joseph Pulitzer (Brycen Addison) raises the price of newspapers for personal profit\, the newsboys refuse to enable his scheme. Jack Kelly\, aided by Davey’s smarts\, passionately leads the newsboys through a strike against the underhanded Pulitzer. Along the way\, romance ensues as Jack meets Katherine Plumber (Sarah Bates)\, a determined yet unknown young journalist who seizes the opportunity to finally cover a compelling story. \n“Audiences can expect to be wowed by the extraordinary talent Wilton High School has to offer\,” says director Meredith Walker. The production staff\, Walker and the students have worked diligently to ensure that the production provides audiences with a gripping portrayal of an inspiring tale.  \nPerformances are in the Clune Center Auditorium on Friday\, May 17 at 8 p.m.\, Saturday\, May 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.\, and Sunday\, May 19 at 4 p.m..  Tickets are $15 each at lunch waves for students\, $16.50 online and at the door one hour prior to each show; cash and check only.  \nTickets and information can be found online.

SUMMARY:Hot & Cool:  Jazz at the Brubeck Room – Guitarist Martin Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Multi-award winning guitarist Martin Taylor returns to Wilton Library’s Brubeck Room for another engaging concert demonstrating his finger-style guitar playing. Taylor has invented and developed a way of playing the guitar that is admired and often imitated by guitarists all over the world. His collaborations with world-class musicians have garnered two honorary doctorates\, a BBC lifetime achievement award\, Top 10 albums in both the USA and Europe\, a record 14 British Jazz Awards\, and in 2002 he was appointed MBE ‘For Services to Jazz Music’ by Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain. \nSee the library’s registration link for more details. Reception follows the concert. There is no charge to attend\, but the suggested donation is $10. The concert is funded by the William and Karen Tell Foundation\, with special thanks to Ed and Catherine Romer and Chris and Tish Brubeck. Registration is strongly suggested.
