SUMMARY:Public Open Studio at Weir Farm National Historical Park
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Weir Farm National Historical Park for an Open Studio with June Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Stephen Henderson on Saturday\, June 22\, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the AIR Studio\, next to the visitor parking lot at 735 Nod Hill Rd. Wilton. Meet the artist\, and view and discuss his artwork. It’s informal\, fun and artsy! \nHenderson works with mixed media in collages\, watercolors\, oils\, and acrylics. SUMMARY:“Disruptive Narratives” Opening Reception at Wilton Library
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library showcases artists in the area in their June art exhibition “Disruptive Narratives.” The exhibition\, curated by Tara Blackwell and Jahmane\, invites viewers to explore these visionary artists’ work. Their use of pop culture symbols and clever commentary challenge societal norms\, offering a fresh\, critical perspective on the ordinary. \nThrough satirical reinterpretations and subversive twists on familiar imagery\, the artists compel viewers to question the narratives shaping our world. To encourage deeper exploration and discussion\, each artist has selected a book that relates to their work and the themes addressed in the exhibit. These recommendations provide additional context and insights into the provocative topics explored by the artists. \nThe artists from the group will exhibit their works in an array of styles\, media choices\, and subject matter. The artists are: 5iveFingaz (Norwalk)\, Tara Blackwell (Stamford)\, Lauren Clayton (Stamford)\, Dooley-O (New Haven)\, Alejandra Gonzalez Zertuche (Norwalk)\, Thalia Hernandez (Bridgeport)\, Jahmane (Norwalk)\, Lily Morgan (Stamford)\, and Sain’t Phifer (Norwalk). \nIn addition\, “Disruptive Narratives: Teen Edition” celebrates the transformative power of youth creativity. It offers a platform for the bold and fearless expressions of a new generation of artists. Join in embracing the rebellious spirit of these emerging voices as they redefine the boundaries of contemporary discourse and offer a fresh\, critical lens on the ordinary. Each teen artist has also contributed to a curated selection of books that resonate with their work and provide deeper insight into the themes of the exhibit. \nThe emerging teen artists are: Clara Eliot (Weston)\, Freya Goldenberg (New Canaan)\, Olive Goldenberg (New Canaan)\, and Lila Malone (Stamford). \nOpening reception on Friday\, June 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. Exhibition runs through July 1. A majority of the works will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library.

SUMMARY:The Story of Chinese Musical Tradition: A Keeper of Asian Heritage Music
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special program about the Chinese musical tradition in celebration of Asian American\, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Enjoy musical instrument demonstrations and professional performance. \nWilton residents Anchi Lin and her son\, New York- and Boston-based conductor Julian Gau\, will present information and demonstrate several traditional classical instruments from China. Two musicians from the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York will then perform on their chosen instruments: \n– Xiao-ran Eric Liu\, an outstanding Bamboo Flute professional with an innovative approach to western instruments\n– Rini Zhang\, a virtuoso Erhu player and opera singer focusing on diverse styles of performing repertoire \nChinese classical music preserved many ancient musical elements from the historical Asia regions. Through the Silk Road\, musicians and merchants from the Middle East\, Central Asia\, and South Asia brought their music and instruments to China. The capital of China\, from around 200 BC until 14 AD\, was like New York or Paris nowadays. For example\, many traveled and brought their cultural heritages there. Over about 1600 years\, Chinese musicians observed and preserved some of the instruments and musical elements that came from different parts of Asia. These aspects ended up in what we now understand to be “Chinese classical music”. The heritage “Chinese” music is a story of continuous integration and infusion of diverse musical traditions from different parts of Asia. \nMusic is a powerful way to connect and continue such historical memories from the past. Many of the nomadic tribes were lost through centuries of wars or political struggles. However\, the instruments and genres kept by the traditional Chinese music tradition can provide a glimpse into their musical heritages. \nNo charge for this event co-sponsored by Wilton Library and the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York. \nRegister online or call 203-762-6334.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare on the Sound's Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special program just in time for Shakespeare on the Sound’s annual summer production of Romeo and Juliet in Rowayton’s Pinkney Park (June 12-June 30). This is their 28th year presenting Shakespeare’s plays outdoors. \nFun Facts About Romeo And Juliet:\n– Romeo and Juliet first meet on a Sunday evening. Four days later — on Wednesday evening — Romeo drinks poison and Juliet stabs herself. “Worst week ever\,” as one Shakespearean scholar puts it.\n– Juliet is 13 years old. Romeo’s age is unknown.\n– Dante first mentions the feud between the families in the early 1300’s.\n– In 1662 Mary Saunderson made stage history as the first woman to play Juliet\, 150 years after London audiences first saw Shakespeare’s play with a boy playing Juliet. \nShakespeare on the Sound Education Director and Macbeth/Christmas Carol actor Nick Urda and board member/Shakespeare teacher John Love guide audiences through Romeo and Juliet and\, in an interactive presentation\, hope to exemplify why Juliet and Romeo might be a more fitting title for the play. They’ll also incite the question: were they really in love? \nRegistration is suggested online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:Wilton Reads: Spring Poetry Seminars with Judson Scruton: From the Atlantic to the Pacific — Imagination is Prolific
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special poetry seminar series with Judson Scruton as part of this year’s Wilton Reads program which features Cristina Henriquez’s The Great Divide\, an epic novel on the construction of the Panama Canal. His series will run on four Thursday mornings starting on April 4 at 10:30 a.m. They will distribute a packet with a detailed schedule of readings and links to the poems in advance. \nAs part of this year’s Wilton Reads\, Scruton will conduct four seminars mingling literary responses to two massive undertakings that connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans:\n– the building of the Transcontinental Railroad (1863-1960) featuring poems by Bret Hart\, Walt Whitman\, Theodore Roethke\, and others.\n– the building of the Panama Canal (1904-1914) featuring Henriquez’s novel The Great Divide. \nAlthough he will make references to the novel throughout the series\, the fourth Thursday’s discussion will have the primary discussion related to the novel (April 25). \nScruton\, M.A. (Johns Hopkins University\, The Writing Seminars\, specializing in poetry)\, taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. In his career as an educator\, Judson also directed publications\, communications\, public relations\, and development at a variety of educational institutions in the U.S. and U.K.\, including the Newberry Library in Chicago. \nAdvance registration is required online or call 203.762.6334. There is no charge for this program. There is automatic registration for all four sessions upon registering for the first session. This lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Email Andrea Sato with any questions.
