SUMMARY:Senior Center Book Discussion: Lady Chatterley's Lover
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library as Ray Rauth leads a discussion of D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. \nBanned in many countries for years\, and even decades\, Lawrence’s novel is a landmark in literary history. In 1960\, the book was at the center of a major obscenity trial in London against its publisher Penguin Books. Prevailing in court\, Penguin then went on to sell 3 million copies. Around the same time\, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the book could be mailed\, and thus sold. But\, beyond the frequently thumbed pages containing the naughty bits\, the novel actually deals with such major themes as the relationship between the life of the mind and life of the body as well as\, of course\, all the issues of class structure in early 20th century England. Vogue\, reviewing the importance of the book to literary history\, said it “marked a fundamental shift for censorship in the United States…and is now considered a landmark case for the First Amendment.” \nThis group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May\, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203.834.6240.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library Readers: Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton
DESCRIPTION:Professional book discussion leader Susan Boyar discusses Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton this month at Wilton Library. A gripping psychological thriller from the Booker Prize–winning author of The Luminaries\, Eleanor Catton’s Birnam Wood is Shakespearean in its drama\, Austenian in its wit\, and\, like both influences\, fascinated by what makes us who we are. A brilliantly constructed study of intentions\, actions\, and consequences\, it is a mesmerizing\, unflinching consideration of the human impulse to ensure our own survival. \nAdvance registration is suggested. SUMMARY:Wilton Library Readers: Tomorrow\, and Tomorrow\, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
DESCRIPTION:Professional book discussion leader Susan Boyar discusses Tomorrow\, and Tomorrow\, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin this month. \nFrom the New York Times best-selling author of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry comes a dazzling and intricately imagined novel that examines the multifarious nature of identity\, disability\, failure\, the redemptive possibilities in play\, and above all\, our need to connect: to be loved and to love. “Zevin’s delight in her characters\, their qualities\, and their projects sprinkles a layer of fairy dust over the whole enterprise. Sure to enchant even those who have never played a video game in their lives” (Kirkus Reviews). \nWilton Library Readers meets the second Wednesday of each month through June. Feel free to bring your lunch and a beverage. \nAdvance registration is suggested. Register on the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Senior Center Book Discussion: Five Days in London\, May 1940
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Senior Center as Michael Bellacosa leads a discussion of John Lukacs‘s “Five Days in London\, May 1940.” \nThis group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May\, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834-6240. Comstock Community Center\, 180 School Road\, Wilton. \nThe five days in 1940 from May 24 through May 28 in London were among the most consequential in world history. Just two weeks after Winston Churchill became Prime Minister\, and with the British Army bottled up backs against the English Channel at Dunkirk\, the fate of Western Civilization hung in the balance. Historian John Lukacs takes us through a fascinating\, behind-the-scenes account of the struggle inside Britain’s War Cabinet between Winston Churchill and Lord Halifax: Churchill advocating standing alone against Hitler even unto death; and Halifax arguing for a negotiated settlement with the Nazi dictator. Even though we know the outcome\, the book reads like a tense political thriller. The Boston Globe said that it “is a relatively compact book\, but it has the power and sweep of Shakespeare’s chronicle plays….One of Lukacs’ impressive strengths is a gripping narrative drive. He is lucid and splendidly readable\, and furthermore\, commands a host of dramatic characters.”
