SUMMARY:Author Talk: Melissa Clark–Dinner in French: My Recipes by Way of France: A Cookbook–CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nThe New York Times star food writer Melissa Clark breaks down the new French classics with 150 recipes that reflect a modern yet distinctly French sensibility in Dinner in French. \nA Q&A will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend but registration highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Book signing and purchase will be available courtesy of Elm Street Books of New Canaan. The media sponsor is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nJust as Julia Child brought French cooking to twentieth-century America\, so now Clark brings French cooking into the 21st century. She first fell in love with France and French food as a child; her parents spent their August vacations traversing the country in search of the best meals with Melissa and her sister in tow. Near to her heart\, France is where Melissa’s family learned to cook and eat. And as her own culinary identity blossomed\, so too did her understanding of why French food is beloved by Americans. \nNow\, as one of the nation’s favorite cookbook authors and food writers\, Melissa updates classic French techniques and dishes to reflect how we cook\, shop\, and eat today. With recipes such as Salade Nicoise with Haricot Vert\, Cornmeal and Harissa Soufflé\, Scalloped Potato Gratin\, Lamb Shank Cassoulet\, Ratatouille Sheet-Pan Chicken\, Campari Olive Oil Cake\, and Apricot Tarte Tatin (to name a few)\, Dinner in French will quickly become a go-to resource and endure as an indispensable classic. \nMelissa Clark is the author of Dinner\, Dinner in an Instant\, and Comfort in an Instant and is a staff writer for The New York Times Food section\, where she writes the wildly popular food column\, “A Good Appetite.” The winner of multiple James Beard and IACP awards\, Melissa is the host of the “Weeknight Kitchen” podcast on The Splendid Table. Melissa earned an MFA in writing from Columbia\, and her work has been selected for the Best American Food Writing. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Max Tucci — The Delmonico Way: Sublime Entertaining and Legendary Recipes from the Restaurant that Made New York
DESCRIPTION:Located in the heart of Wall Street\, Delmonico’s from 1827 to the 1980s shaped New York City’s restaurant scene. Under the original ownership of the Delmonico brothers\, Pietro and Giovanni\, Delmonico’s introduced the first farm-to-table concept\, à la carte dining — complete with white tablecloths and menus — but most notably created the phenomenon called the “power lunch.” The impact of World War I and the era of Prohibition caused the family to cease operations\, shuttering the restaurant in 1923. In 1926\, Oscar Tucci\, a Tuscan immigrant\, took over ownership and developed a strict code of hospitality\, etiquette\, and operations coupled with legendary libations and superb fare known as the Delmonico way. \nWilton Library will welcome local author Max Tucci\, Oscar’s grandson\, for an author talk about The Delmonico Way\, which welcomes readers to a world when dining out was a glamorous affair. Max and his celebrity chef friends offer timeless recipes and he shares his tips for recreating the magic of the Delmonico way at home. Tucci is a writer and a TV and radio personality\, and an award-winning producer and host of the “Max & Friends” podcast. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. Wilton Library will receive a portion of the book sale proceeds. \nGOOD Morning Wilton is the media sponsor of the library’s author talks. \nRegistration is required. To register and for more information\, visit the Wilton Library website\, call the library’s reference librarians at 203.762.6350 or register via email.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Stephanie Kramer - Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Kramer is the author of Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work. This ‘labor’ or love was written over three years late at night and during her children’s naps because of her desire to create a groundswell of support. With original research and hundreds of inspiring interviews\, she does just that— sharing five powerful principles to find perspective\, create your balance\, cultivate community\, communicate your needs\, and embrace your shift in identity throughout each phase of pregnancy\, starting with the moment you decide you want to become a working mom-to-be. In Carry Strong\, Kramer flips the script. This isn’t about powering through pregnancy at work. It’s about being powerful and pregnant at work. \nKramer is a tenured beauty industry executive today serving as the Chief Human Resources Officer of L’Oréal USA in New York City and an adjunct professor of management communication in the graduate business program at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is the proud mother of two young children and deeply believes that you can do it all\, not at the same time\, and absolutely not alone. \nThis author talk is co-sponsored by the Wilton Woman’s Club. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website or call 203.762.6350.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Allison Montclair - The Lady from Burma
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an author talk at Wilton Library. \nIn Allison Montclair’s The Lady from Burma\, murder once again stalks the proprietors of The Right Sort Marriage Bureau in the surprisingly dangerous landscape of post-World War II London. \nIn the immediate post-war days of London\, two unlikely partners have undertaken an even more unlikely\, if necessary\, business venture – The Right Sort Marriage Bureau. The two partners are Miss Iris Sparks\, a woman with a dangerous – and never discussed – past in British intelligence and Mrs. Gwendolyn Bainbridge\, a war widow with a young son entangled in a complicated aristocratic family. Mostly their clients are people trying to start (or restart) their lives in this much-changed world\, but their new client is something different. A happily married woman has come to them to find a new wife for her husband. Dying of cancer\, she wants the two to make sure her entomologist\, academic husband finds someone new once she passes. \nShortly thereafter\, she’s found dead in Epping Forest\, in what appears to be a suicide. But that doesn’t make sense to either Sparks or Bainbridge. At the same time\, Bainbridge is attempting to regain legal control of her life\, opposed by the conservator who has been managing her assets – perhaps not always in her best interest. When that conservator is found dead\, Bainbridge herself is one of the prime suspects. Attempting to make sense of two deaths at once\, to protect themselves and their clients\, the redoubtable owners of the Right Sort Marriage Bureau are once again on the case. \nAllison Montclair (a pseudonym for Alan Gordon) grew up devouring hand-me-down Agatha Christie paperbacks and James Bond movies. As a result of this deplorable upbringing\, Montclair became addicted to tales of crime\, intrigue\, and espionage. Montclair is the author of the award-winning Sparks & Bainbridge historical mystery series\, which begins with The Right Sort of Man. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Deborah Kasdan - "Roll Back the World: A Sister's Memoir"
DESCRIPTION:When Deborah Kasdan’s sister returns from a gap year in Israel she seems to glow with health and beauty. Three years later she is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Roll Back the World is a heartbreaking story of love\, grief\, and guilt — and a testament to the enduring bonds of siblings in the face of ineffective psychiatric treatment spanning decades. \nIn clear and vivid prose\, and with the help of Rachel’s letters and poetry\, Kasdan provides a poignant look at a mid-century Jewish family under strain; offers a moving account of Rachel’s indomitable spirit; and explores family history from the WWII years and the Cold War\, trying to make sense of what happened. \nAs the years pass\, Kasdan focuses on her own family and career but constantly feels shadowed by a sense of guilt\, which is compounded when she and her other two siblings make a bold attempt to help Rachel—a plan that fails. Only after a mental health worker asks Rachel to write a poem does she finally gain her freedom. To Kasdan’s great joy\, Rachel finds acceptance\, despite her disabilities\, in a compassionate community\, including a synagogue where she returns to the religion of her youth. \nKasdan will be in conversation with professional book discussion leader Susan Boyar. \nWhen Kasdan retired from a thirty-five-year career writing about business and technology\, she joined Westport Writers Workshop to make her personal stories come alive. She has served on the board of directors of an intergenerational housing organization and the National Organization on Mental Illness (NAMI) for Southwest CT. She lives in Norwalk. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library website. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThis event is co-sponsored by NAMI Southwest CT. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Rob Copeland
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a special Author Talk program as award-winning New York Times finance writer Rob Copeland talks about his brand new book The Fund: Ray Dalio\, Bridgewater Associates\, and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend. \nLate last year\, when the billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates\, the largest hedge fund on the planet\, announced that he was stepping down from the company he started out of his apartment nearly 50 years ago\, the news made headlines around the world. Ray Dalio cultivated an aura of international admiration and fame thanks to his company’s eye-popping success\, coupled with a mystique he encouraged with frequent media appearances\, celebrity hobnobbing\, and his bestselling book\, Principles. In The Fund\, award-winning New York Times journalist Rob Copeland punctures this carefully-constructed narrative of the benevolent business titan\, exposing his much-promoted “principles” as a phenomenal illusion\, and one of the great feats of hubris in modern memory. These so-called principles endowed upon Dalio the authority to opine on life’s great meanings\, which in turn helped transform him into a self-help guru for millions\, as money continued to flow into his hedge fund. \nThe Fund is a page-turning\, stranger-than-fiction journey into a rarefied world of wealth and power. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with those inside and around the firm\, Copeland takes readers into the room as former FBI director Jim Comey kisses Dalio’s ring\, recent Pennsylvania Senate candidate David McCormick drinks the Kool-Aid\, and a rotating cast of memorable characters grapple with their personal psychological and moral limits – all under the watchful eye of their charismatic leader. \nRob Copeland is a finance reporter for The New York Times. His front-page investigations into Bridgewater Associates won a New York Press Club award. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Author Talk with Terence Hawkins: The Rage of Achilles
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an Author Talk with Terence Hawkins\, who will speak on January 11 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. about his first novel\, The Rage of Achilles\, first published in 2009 and republished in 2021. \nIn The Rage of Achilles\, Terence Hawkins recounts the “Iliad” as a novel and imagines a Trojan War that really happened. Though he adopts Homer’s characters\, those fabled warriors are no more noble than the scared\, tired grunts they command\, exhausted and bitter after ten years of brutal Bronze Age warfare. And however savage the fighting\, over all hangs the terrible truth that the objective of combat is not glory\, but the enslavement of the defeated. \nHis realism extends to the gods themselves. Informed by Julian Jaynes’ groundbreaking theory of the bicameral mind\, The Rage of Achilles takes place in a world in which the modern human consciousness struggles painfully to be born. The gods are only the hallucinations of men and women desperate to be told what to do in a terrifying and confusing world. \nTold in taut\, elegant prose that captures both the Homeric lyric and military grit\, The Rage of Achilles is a fast-moving take on literature’s foundational epic. \nIn addition to historical fiction\, Hawkins has written American Neolithic and the collection Turing’s Graveyard. Terence Hawkins has served as the editor of Blue Mountain Review\, and All Things Tudor\, and is now the director of the Company of Writers. He lives in Connecticut. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies of the books and Terence Hawkins will be signing books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Greens at Cannondale Offers Lecture with In-House Artist\, Howard L. Bonington
DESCRIPTION:The Greens at Cannondale will present an afternoon with our in-house artist\, Howard L. Bonington\, who will lecture on his book\, Aviation on Cape Cod. Join us on Friday\, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Greens at Cannondale Media Center. Following his lecture\, there will be a meet and greet with the author\, with light refreshments served. \n\n\nAviation on Cape Cod features a series of pen and ink drawings related to its history\, as well as a brief description about each drawing. Bonington’s signature pen-and-ink drawings are like a lone dory on the sea of Cape artists working in color. \n\n\nBorn in Brooklyn\, NY in 1929\, Bonington is a retired architect who was active in the profession in New York City for more than 40 years. Upon retiring to the Cape and now Wilton\, Bonington continues to expand his interest in drawing private residences\, landmarks\, scenes\, plants\, animals – and airplanes. When traveling\, he usually substitutes a sketchbook for a camera. His collection of on-site drawings numbers in the hundreds. While using watercolor and colored pencil on occasion\, he has specialized in black and white pen and ink drawings. He enjoys testing its reliance on the limited graphic options available such as weighted line work\, textures and contrasts to achieve the desired effects.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Patrick Bringley on his Memoir: All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special Author Talk with Patrick Bringley. He shares his debut memoir\, All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me. This is an intimate look at The Met and its profound effect on Bringley’s life while he grieved the death of his older brother. \nCaught up in his fledgling career at the New Yorker in his mid-twenties\, Bringley’s life suddenly changed with his adored older brother’s terminal cancer diagnosis. He consequently quit his job and looked for solace and quiet in the most beautiful place he knew: The Met. He spent the next decade as a museum guard. \nOver the years\, as his bonds with his colleagues and the art grew\, he came to understand how fortunate he was to be walled off in this little world. He also realized how much it resembled the best aspects of the larger world to which he gradually\, gratefully returned. \nAll the Beauty in the World has been named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Public Library\, NPR\, the Financial Times\, and Audible. The Sunday Times (London) even selected it as the Outstanding Art Book of 2023. It is additionally published in translated editions around the world. \nBringley leads public and private tours of The Met and lectures at venues around the country\, living with his wife and children in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. \nElm Street Books will sell copies and Bringley will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nGOOD Morning Wilton is the media sponsor of this event. \nRegistration is required online.

SUMMARY:This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot with Alicia Cheng
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society for a community program featuring Alicia Cheng\, who will speak about her recent book: This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot. \nCheng’s book\, the first illustrated history of printed ballot design\, illuminates the noble but often flawed process at the heart of our democracy. An exploration and celebration of US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, this visual history reveals unregulated\, outlandish\, and\, at times\, absurd designs that reflect the explosive growth and changing face of the voting public. The ballots particularly offer insight into a pivotal time in American history — a period of tectonic shifts in the electoral system — fraught with electoral fraud\, disenfranchisement\, scams\, and skullduggery. Parties also printed their own tickets and voters risked their lives going to the polls. \nCheng currently serves as the Head of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She additionally serves as an external critic for the MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught at Yale University\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, Barnard College\, and the Cooper Union School of Art. She will present and discuss some of the remarkably varied and colorful formats of electoral ballots in American democracy’s early days featured in her recent book. \nStephanie Thomas\, the Secretary of State of Connecticut\, plans to join the event as a special guest. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies and Cheng will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nRegistration is requested online.

SUMMARY:Author Mark Oppenheimer Speaks on "Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library and the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism for an important talk\, “Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today\,” by Mark Oppenheimer\, on Monday\, March 25 at 7 p.m. Oppenheimer is a NY Times columnist\, Pulitzer grantee and the author of Squirrel Hill\, the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. \nSquirrel Hill\, Pittsburgh is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in the country\, known for its tight-knit community and the profusion of multigenerational families. On October 27\, 2018\, a gunman killed eleven Jews who were worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue — the most deadly anti-Semitic attack in American history. \nMany neighborhoods would be understandably subsumed by despair and recrimination after such an event\, but not this one. Oppenheimer poignantly shifts the focus away from the criminal and his crime\, and instead presents the historic\, spirited community at the center of this heartbreak. He even speaks with residents and nonresidents\, Jews and gentiles\, survivors and witnesses\, teenagers and seniors\, activists and historians. \nTogether\, these stories provide a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of collective grief\, love\, support\, and revival. Yet\, he additionally details the difficult dialogue and messy confrontations that Squirrel Hill had to face in the process of healing. These necessary steps are a part of true growth and understanding in any community. He has reverently captured the vibrancy and caring that still characterize Squirrel Hill\, and it is this phenomenal resilience that can provide inspiration to any place burdened with discrimination and hate. \nOppenheimer has covered American religion for 25 years. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Yale\, and has taught at Stanford\, Wesleyan\, Wellesley\, NYU\, Boston College\, and Yale. He also was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. On top of that\, he wrote the “Beliefs” column for The New York Times from 2010 – 2016\, and has written for The New Yorker\, The Nation\, GQ\, Slate\, and many more. Oppenheimer notably created Unorthodox\, the world’s most popular podcast about Jewish life and culture\, and more recently hosted the multi-part podcast\, Gatecrashers. This discussed the history of Jews and antisemitism at Ivy League schools. He is the author of five books\, including Squirrel Hill. Since 2023\, he has been Director of Open Learning at American Jewish University and lives in Connecticut with his wife\, four daughters\, one son\, and two dogs. \nElm Street Books will sell copies of the book\, which the author will sign after the program. \nPresented in partnership with Wilton Library\, the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism\, and the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, serving Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding\, the media sponsor for this event is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required online or call 203.761.6334.

SUMMARY:The Secret WWII Concentration Camp Diary of Odd Nansen
DESCRIPTION:The New Yorker hails From Day to Day\, the World War II concentration camp diary\, as “among the most compelling documents to come out of the war\,”. Secretly written by Odd Nansen\, a Norwegian\, it is one of only a handful ever translated into English. Nansen\, arrested in January 1942\, was held captive in various Nazi camps in Norway and Germany. During this time he wrote this inspiring diary illuminating daily struggles. It chiefly illustrates not only his survival\, but the fight to preserve his sanity and maintain his humanity. \nTimothy Boyce rescued the diary from oblivion after having been out of print for over 60 years. He discovered it from reading the memoir of another Holocaust survivor. Nansen saved this 10 year-old boy while both were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen. Through selected readings\, Boyce will discuss and explain who Nansen was. Moreover\, he discusses why he was arrested\, why he wrote the diary\, how he preserved it\, and why this diary is as important today as it was when first written. Boyce will also sell his book at the event. \nBoyce practiced law for many years\, most recently serving as the Managing Partner of the Charlotte\, NC office of Dechert LLP\, an international law firm. His articles appear in The Quarterly Journal of Military History\, World War II Magazine\, The Scandinavian Review and Viking Magazine. Boyce\, who currently lives in Tryon\, NC\, retired in 2014 to devote his time to writing and speaking. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library Author Talk with Samantha Greene Woodruff in Conversation with Jacqueline Friedland
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for an Author Talk program with Samantha Greene Woodruff in conversation with fellow author Jacqueline Friedland about Woodruff’s latest novel\, The Trade Off. Inspired by the true story of a pioneering investment legend\, The Trade Off is a powerful novel about identity\, sacrifice\, family loyalties\, and the complex morality of money. In this historical novel\, a brilliant and ambitious young woman strives to find her place amid the promise and tumult of 1920s Wall Street. \nBea Abramovitz has a gift for math and numbers. With her father\, she studies the burgeoning Wall Street market’s stocks and patterns in the financial pages. After college she’s determined to parlay her talent for the prediction game into personal and professional success. But in the 1920s\, in a Lower East Side tenement\, opportunities for women don’t just come knocking. Bea will have to create them. \nIt’s easier for her golden-boy twin brother\, Jake\, who longs to reclaim all their parents lost after fleeing the pogroms in Russia to come to America. Well-intentioned but undisciplined\, Jake has a charm that can carry him only so far on Wall Street. So Bea devises a plan. They’ll be a secret team\, and she’ll be the brains behind the broker. As Jake’s reputation\, his heedless ego\, and the family fortune soar\, Bea foresees catastrophe: an impending crash that could destroy everything if she doesn’t finally take control. \nWoodruff is the author of two number-one Amazon-bestselling historical fiction novels\, The Lobotomist’s Wife (2002) and The Trade Off (2024). She spent 15 years at Viacom’s Nickelodeon before leaving to parent her two young children. After studying in the continuing education program at the Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College\, Woodruff completed her first novel\, The Lobotomist’s Wife\, which was an Amazon First Reads pick. Her writing has appeared in Newsweek\, Writer’s Digest\, Female First\, Read 650 and more. In addition\, she has contributed an essay entitled “Jew-ish” about her lifelong conflicted relationship with Judaism\, to the anthology\, On Being Jewish Now (2024) edited by Zibby Owens. All proceeds from the book will go to Artists Against Antisemitism\, a non-profit founded in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks in Israel. Woodruff lives in southern Connecticut with her husband\, two children\, two dogs and a small reptile zoo. \nFriedland is the USA Today- and Amazon-bestselling author of both historical and contemporary women’s fiction. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and NYU Law School\, she practiced as a commercial litigator for as long as she could stand it. After determining that office life did not suit her\, she began teaching at the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in Manhattan and working on her first book. She soon returned to school to earn her Master of Fine Arts from Sarah Lawrence College\, graduating from the program in 2016 and publishing her first novel shortly thereafter. Her books have been awarded the 2020 and 2021 gold medals in fiction from Reader’s Favorite and have been named a Best Indie Book of 2021 by Kirkus Reviews\, the SheReads Best Book Club Pick of 2021\, and a Women’s Fiction Writers Association Star finalist for 2022. Friedland regularly reviews fiction for trade publications and appears at schools and other locations as a guest lecturer. Her fifth novel\, Counting Backwards\, is forthcoming from Harper Muse in March 2025. Friedland lives in Westchester County\, NY with her husband\, four children and two very bossy dogs. \nElm Street Books will be on site to sell copies of The Trade Off\, which Woodruff will sign.
