SUMMARY:Author Mark Oppenheimer Speaks on "Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library and the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism for an important talk\, “Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today\,” by Mark Oppenheimer\, on Monday\, March 25 at 7 p.m. Oppenheimer is a NY Times columnist\, Pulitzer grantee and the author of Squirrel Hill\, the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. \nSquirrel Hill\, Pittsburgh is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in the country\, known for its tight-knit community and the profusion of multigenerational families. On October 27\, 2018\, a gunman killed eleven Jews who were worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue — the most deadly anti-Semitic attack in American history. \nMany neighborhoods would be understandably subsumed by despair and recrimination after such an event\, but not this one. Oppenheimer poignantly shifts the focus away from the criminal and his crime\, and instead presents the historic\, spirited community at the center of this heartbreak. He even speaks with residents and nonresidents\, Jews and gentiles\, survivors and witnesses\, teenagers and seniors\, activists and historians. \nTogether\, these stories provide a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of collective grief\, love\, support\, and revival. Yet\, he additionally details the difficult dialogue and messy confrontations that Squirrel Hill had to face in the process of healing. These necessary steps are a part of true growth and understanding in any community. He has reverently captured the vibrancy and caring that still characterize Squirrel Hill\, and it is this phenomenal resilience that can provide inspiration to any place burdened with discrimination and hate. \nOppenheimer has covered American religion for 25 years. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Yale\, and has taught at Stanford\, Wesleyan\, Wellesley\, NYU\, Boston College\, and Yale. He also was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. On top of that\, he wrote the “Beliefs” column for The New York Times from 2010 – 2016\, and has written for The New Yorker\, The Nation\, GQ\, Slate\, and many more. Oppenheimer notably created Unorthodox\, the world’s most popular podcast about Jewish life and culture\, and more recently hosted the multi-part podcast\, Gatecrashers. This discussed the history of Jews and antisemitism at Ivy League schools. He is the author of five books\, including Squirrel Hill. Since 2023\, he has been Director of Open Learning at American Jewish University and lives in Connecticut with his wife\, four daughters\, one son\, and two dogs. \nElm Street Books will sell copies of the book\, which the author will sign after the program. \nPresented in partnership with Wilton Library\, the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism\, and the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, serving Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding\, the media sponsor for this event is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required online or call 203.761.6334.

SUMMARY:The Secret WWII Concentration Camp Diary of Odd Nansen
DESCRIPTION:The New Yorker hails From Day to Day\, the World War II concentration camp diary\, as “among the most compelling documents to come out of the war\,”. Secretly written by Odd Nansen\, a Norwegian\, it is one of only a handful ever translated into English. Nansen\, arrested in January 1942\, was held captive in various Nazi camps in Norway and Germany. During this time he wrote this inspiring diary illuminating daily struggles. It chiefly illustrates not only his survival\, but the fight to preserve his sanity and maintain his humanity. \nTimothy Boyce rescued the diary from oblivion after having been out of print for over 60 years. He discovered it from reading the memoir of another Holocaust survivor. Nansen saved this 10 year-old boy while both were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen. Through selected readings\, Boyce will discuss and explain who Nansen was. Moreover\, he discusses why he was arrested\, why he wrote the diary\, how he preserved it\, and why this diary is as important today as it was when first written. Boyce will also sell his book at the event. \nBoyce practiced law for many years\, most recently serving as the Managing Partner of the Charlotte\, NC office of Dechert LLP\, an international law firm. His articles appear in The Quarterly Journal of Military History\, World War II Magazine\, The Scandinavian Review and Viking Magazine. Boyce\, who currently lives in Tryon\, NC\, retired in 2014 to devote his time to writing and speaking. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library Author Talk with Samantha Greene Woodruff in Conversation with Jacqueline Friedland
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for an Author Talk program with Samantha Greene Woodruff in conversation with fellow author Jacqueline Friedland about Woodruff’s latest novel\, The Trade Off. Inspired by the true story of a pioneering investment legend\, The Trade Off is a powerful novel about identity\, sacrifice\, family loyalties\, and the complex morality of money. In this historical novel\, a brilliant and ambitious young woman strives to find her place amid the promise and tumult of 1920s Wall Street. \nBea Abramovitz has a gift for math and numbers. With her father\, she studies the burgeoning Wall Street market’s stocks and patterns in the financial pages. After college she’s determined to parlay her talent for the prediction game into personal and professional success. But in the 1920s\, in a Lower East Side tenement\, opportunities for women don’t just come knocking. Bea will have to create them. \nIt’s easier for her golden-boy twin brother\, Jake\, who longs to reclaim all their parents lost after fleeing the pogroms in Russia to come to America. Well-intentioned but undisciplined\, Jake has a charm that can carry him only so far on Wall Street. So Bea devises a plan. They’ll be a secret team\, and she’ll be the brains behind the broker. As Jake’s reputation\, his heedless ego\, and the family fortune soar\, Bea foresees catastrophe: an impending crash that could destroy everything if she doesn’t finally take control. \nWoodruff is the author of two number-one Amazon-bestselling historical fiction novels\, The Lobotomist’s Wife (2002) and The Trade Off (2024). She spent 15 years at Viacom’s Nickelodeon before leaving to parent her two young children. After studying in the continuing education program at the Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College\, Woodruff completed her first novel\, The Lobotomist’s Wife\, which was an Amazon First Reads pick. Her writing has appeared in Newsweek\, Writer’s Digest\, Female First\, Read 650 and more. In addition\, she has contributed an essay entitled “Jew-ish” about her lifelong conflicted relationship with Judaism\, to the anthology\, On Being Jewish Now (2024) edited by Zibby Owens. All proceeds from the book will go to Artists Against Antisemitism\, a non-profit founded in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks in Israel. Woodruff lives in southern Connecticut with her husband\, two children\, two dogs and a small reptile zoo. \nFriedland is the USA Today- and Amazon-bestselling author of both historical and contemporary women’s fiction. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and NYU Law School\, she practiced as a commercial litigator for as long as she could stand it. After determining that office life did not suit her\, she began teaching at the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in Manhattan and working on her first book. She soon returned to school to earn her Master of Fine Arts from Sarah Lawrence College\, graduating from the program in 2016 and publishing her first novel shortly thereafter. Her books have been awarded the 2020 and 2021 gold medals in fiction from Reader’s Favorite and have been named a Best Indie Book of 2021 by Kirkus Reviews\, the SheReads Best Book Club Pick of 2021\, and a Women’s Fiction Writers Association Star finalist for 2022. Friedland regularly reviews fiction for trade publications and appears at schools and other locations as a guest lecturer. Her fifth novel\, Counting Backwards\, is forthcoming from Harper Muse in March 2025. Friedland lives in Westchester County\, NY with her husband\, four children and two very bossy dogs. \nElm Street Books will be on site to sell copies of The Trade Off\, which Woodruff will sign. SUMMARY:Author Talk with Wilton First Selectman Toni Boucher: The Husky Effect
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library on Friday evening\, Apr. 25\, for a special author talk program with Wilton’s First Selectman Toni Boucher as we celebrate the publication of her first book\, The Husky Effect: How UConn is Creating the Entrepreneurs of the Future\, a deeply personal story of entrepreneurship and ingenuity as well as a thoughtful exploration of the spirit of innovation that’s flourishing in the University of Connecticut School of Business\, inspired by the national champion UConn Huskies men’s and women’s basketball teams. \nIn The Husky Effect\, Boucher — a selectman\, former Connecticut state legislator\, executive\, and UConn School of Business alum — lays out a recipe for entrepreneurs of any age to reach for their dreams. Some of his other works include Twenty-Four Seconds From Now…\, National Book Award Finalist Look Both Ways\, Caldecott Honor There Was a Party for Langston\, and Ain’t Burned All The Bright\, a Caldecott Honor winner. In his works\, Reynolds aims to depict the rich inner lives of kids of color and ensure that they see themselves and their communities in literature. \nBorn in Washington\, DC\, and raised in Maryland\, Reynolds first found inspiration in rap and began writing poetry when he was 9 years old. He went on to publish several poetry collections before publishing his first novel\, When I Was the Greatest\, which won the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent. Kendi\, is a gripping\, fast-paced and energizing narrative that illuminates the many insidious forms of racist ideas and gives readers the tools to identify and stamp out racist thoughts in their own lives. \nReynolds currently lives and writes in Washington\, DC\, and has served three terms as the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. \nElm Street Books will be on site to sell different books written by Reynolds. Attendees may also preorder books from Elm Street Books online and pick up the books at the event to be signed by the author.
