SUMMARY:Author Mark Oppenheimer Speaks on "Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library and the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism for an important talk\, “Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today\,” by Mark Oppenheimer\, on Monday\, March 25 at 7 p.m. Oppenheimer is a NY Times columnist\, Pulitzer grantee and the author of Squirrel Hill\, the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. \nSquirrel Hill\, Pittsburgh is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in the country\, known for its tight-knit community and the profusion of multigenerational families. On October 27\, 2018\, a gunman killed eleven Jews who were worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue — the most deadly anti-Semitic attack in American history. \nMany neighborhoods would be understandably subsumed by despair and recrimination after such an event\, but not this one. Oppenheimer poignantly shifts the focus away from the criminal and his crime\, and instead presents the historic\, spirited community at the center of this heartbreak. He even speaks with residents and nonresidents\, Jews and gentiles\, survivors and witnesses\, teenagers and seniors\, activists and historians. \nTogether\, these stories provide a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of collective grief\, love\, support\, and revival. Yet\, he additionally details the difficult dialogue and messy confrontations that Squirrel Hill had to face in the process of healing. These necessary steps are a part of true growth and understanding in any community. He has reverently captured the vibrancy and caring that still characterize Squirrel Hill\, and it is this phenomenal resilience that can provide inspiration to any place burdened with discrimination and hate. \nOppenheimer has covered American religion for 25 years. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Yale\, and has taught at Stanford\, Wesleyan\, Wellesley\, NYU\, Boston College\, and Yale. He also was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. On top of that\, he wrote the “Beliefs” column for The New York Times from 2010 – 2016\, and has written for The New Yorker\, The Nation\, GQ\, Slate\, and many more. Oppenheimer notably created Unorthodox\, the world’s most popular podcast about Jewish life and culture\, and more recently hosted the multi-part podcast\, Gatecrashers. This discussed the history of Jews and antisemitism at Ivy League schools. He is the author of five books\, including Squirrel Hill. Since 2023\, he has been Director of Open Learning at American Jewish University and lives in Connecticut with his wife\, four daughters\, one son\, and two dogs. \nElm Street Books will sell copies of the book\, which the author will sign after the program. \nPresented in partnership with Wilton Library\, the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism\, and the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, serving Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding\, the media sponsor for this event is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required online or call 203.761.6334.

SUMMARY:This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot with Alicia Cheng
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society for a community program featuring Alicia Cheng\, who will speak about her recent book: This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot. \nCheng’s book\, the first illustrated history of printed ballot design\, illuminates the noble but often flawed process at the heart of our democracy. An exploration and celebration of US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, this visual history reveals unregulated\, outlandish\, and\, at times\, absurd designs that reflect the explosive growth and changing face of the voting public. The ballots particularly offer insight into a pivotal time in American history — a period of tectonic shifts in the electoral system — fraught with electoral fraud\, disenfranchisement\, scams\, and skullduggery. Parties also printed their own tickets and voters risked their lives going to the polls. \nCheng currently serves as the Head of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She additionally serves as an external critic for the MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught at Yale University\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, Barnard College\, and the Cooper Union School of Art. She will present and discuss some of the remarkably varied and colorful formats of electoral ballots in American democracy’s early days featured in her recent book. \nStephanie Thomas\, the Secretary of State of Connecticut\, plans to join the event as a special guest. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies and Cheng will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nRegistration is requested online.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Patrick Bringley on his Memoir: All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special Author Talk with Patrick Bringley. He shares his debut memoir\, All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me. This is an intimate look at The Met and its profound effect on Bringley’s life while he grieved the death of his older brother. \nCaught up in his fledgling career at the New Yorker in his mid-twenties\, Bringley’s life suddenly changed with his adored older brother’s terminal cancer diagnosis. He consequently quit his job and looked for solace and quiet in the most beautiful place he knew: The Met. He spent the next decade as a museum guard. \nOver the years\, as his bonds with his colleagues and the art grew\, he came to understand how fortunate he was to be walled off in this little world. He also realized how much it resembled the best aspects of the larger world to which he gradually\, gratefully returned. \nAll the Beauty in the World has been named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Public Library\, NPR\, the Financial Times\, and Audible. The Sunday Times (London) even selected it as the Outstanding Art Book of 2023. It is additionally published in translated editions around the world. \nBringley leads public and private tours of The Met and lectures at venues around the country\, living with his wife and children in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. \nElm Street Books will sell copies and Bringley will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nGOOD Morning Wilton is the media sponsor of this event. \nRegistration is required online.

SUMMARY:Greens at Cannondale Offers Lecture with In-House Artist\, Howard L. Bonington
DESCRIPTION:The Greens at Cannondale will present an afternoon with our in-house artist\, Howard L. Bonington\, who will lecture on his book\, Aviation on Cape Cod. Join us on Friday\, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Greens at Cannondale Media Center. Following his lecture\, there will be a meet and greet with the author\, with light refreshments served. \n\n\nAviation on Cape Cod features a series of pen and ink drawings related to its history\, as well as a brief description about each drawing. Bonington’s signature pen-and-ink drawings are like a lone dory on the sea of Cape artists working in color. \n\n\nBorn in Brooklyn\, NY in 1929\, Bonington is a retired architect who was active in the profession in New York City for more than 40 years. Upon retiring to the Cape and now Wilton\, Bonington continues to expand his interest in drawing private residences\, landmarks\, scenes\, plants\, animals – and airplanes. When traveling\, he usually substitutes a sketchbook for a camera. His collection of on-site drawings numbers in the hundreds. While using watercolor and colored pencil on occasion\, he has specialized in black and white pen and ink drawings. He enjoys testing its reliance on the limited graphic options available such as weighted line work\, textures and contrasts to achieve the desired effects.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Terence Hawkins: The Rage of Achilles
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an Author Talk with Terence Hawkins\, who will speak on January 11 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. about his first novel\, The Rage of Achilles\, first published in 2009 and republished in 2021. \nIn The Rage of Achilles\, Terence Hawkins recounts the “Iliad” as a novel and imagines a Trojan War that really happened. Though he adopts Homer’s characters\, those fabled warriors are no more noble than the scared\, tired grunts they command\, exhausted and bitter after ten years of brutal Bronze Age warfare. And however savage the fighting\, over all hangs the terrible truth that the objective of combat is not glory\, but the enslavement of the defeated. \nHis realism extends to the gods themselves. Informed by Julian Jaynes’ groundbreaking theory of the bicameral mind\, The Rage of Achilles takes place in a world in which the modern human consciousness struggles painfully to be born. The gods are only the hallucinations of men and women desperate to be told what to do in a terrifying and confusing world. \nTold in taut\, elegant prose that captures both the Homeric lyric and military grit\, The Rage of Achilles is a fast-moving take on literature’s foundational epic. \nIn addition to historical fiction\, Hawkins has written American Neolithic and the collection Turing’s Graveyard. Terence Hawkins has served as the editor of Blue Mountain Review\, and All Things Tudor\, and is now the director of the Company of Writers. He lives in Connecticut. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies of the books and Terence Hawkins will be signing books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Rob Copeland
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a special Author Talk program as award-winning New York Times finance writer Rob Copeland talks about his brand new book The Fund: Ray Dalio\, Bridgewater Associates\, and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend. \nLate last year\, when the billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates\, the largest hedge fund on the planet\, announced that he was stepping down from the company he started out of his apartment nearly 50 years ago\, the news made headlines around the world. Ray Dalio cultivated an aura of international admiration and fame thanks to his company’s eye-popping success\, coupled with a mystique he encouraged with frequent media appearances\, celebrity hobnobbing\, and his bestselling book\, Principles. In The Fund\, award-winning New York Times journalist Rob Copeland punctures this carefully-constructed narrative of the benevolent business titan\, exposing his much-promoted “principles” as a phenomenal illusion\, and one of the great feats of hubris in modern memory. These so-called principles endowed upon Dalio the authority to opine on life’s great meanings\, which in turn helped transform him into a self-help guru for millions\, as money continued to flow into his hedge fund. \nThe Fund is a page-turning\, stranger-than-fiction journey into a rarefied world of wealth and power. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with those inside and around the firm\, Copeland takes readers into the room as former FBI director Jim Comey kisses Dalio’s ring\, recent Pennsylvania Senate candidate David McCormick drinks the Kool-Aid\, and a rotating cast of memorable characters grapple with their personal psychological and moral limits – all under the watchful eye of their charismatic leader. \nRob Copeland is a finance reporter for The New York Times. His front-page investigations into Bridgewater Associates won a New York Press Club award. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Deborah Kasdan - "Roll Back the World: A Sister's Memoir"
DESCRIPTION:When Deborah Kasdan’s sister returns from a gap year in Israel she seems to glow with health and beauty. Three years later she is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Roll Back the World is a heartbreaking story of love\, grief\, and guilt — and a testament to the enduring bonds of siblings in the face of ineffective psychiatric treatment spanning decades. \nIn clear and vivid prose\, and with the help of Rachel’s letters and poetry\, Kasdan provides a poignant look at a mid-century Jewish family under strain; offers a moving account of Rachel’s indomitable spirit; and explores family history from the WWII years and the Cold War\, trying to make sense of what happened. \nAs the years pass\, Kasdan focuses on her own family and career but constantly feels shadowed by a sense of guilt\, which is compounded when she and her other two siblings make a bold attempt to help Rachel—a plan that fails. Only after a mental health worker asks Rachel to write a poem does she finally gain her freedom. To Kasdan’s great joy\, Rachel finds acceptance\, despite her disabilities\, in a compassionate community\, including a synagogue where she returns to the religion of her youth. \nKasdan will be in conversation with professional book discussion leader Susan Boyar. \nWhen Kasdan retired from a thirty-five-year career writing about business and technology\, she joined Westport Writers Workshop to make her personal stories come alive. She has served on the board of directors of an intergenerational housing organization and the National Organization on Mental Illness (NAMI) for Southwest CT. She lives in Norwalk. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library website. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThis event is co-sponsored by NAMI Southwest CT. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Allison Montclair - The Lady from Burma
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an author talk at Wilton Library. \nIn Allison Montclair’s The Lady from Burma\, murder once again stalks the proprietors of The Right Sort Marriage Bureau in the surprisingly dangerous landscape of post-World War II London. \nIn the immediate post-war days of London\, two unlikely partners have undertaken an even more unlikely\, if necessary\, business venture – The Right Sort Marriage Bureau. The two partners are Miss Iris Sparks\, a woman with a dangerous – and never discussed – past in British intelligence and Mrs. Gwendolyn Bainbridge\, a war widow with a young son entangled in a complicated aristocratic family. Mostly their clients are people trying to start (or restart) their lives in this much-changed world\, but their new client is something different. A happily married woman has come to them to find a new wife for her husband. Dying of cancer\, she wants the two to make sure her entomologist\, academic husband finds someone new once she passes. \nShortly thereafter\, she’s found dead in Epping Forest\, in what appears to be a suicide. But that doesn’t make sense to either Sparks or Bainbridge. At the same time\, Bainbridge is attempting to regain legal control of her life\, opposed by the conservator who has been managing her assets – perhaps not always in her best interest. When that conservator is found dead\, Bainbridge herself is one of the prime suspects. Attempting to make sense of two deaths at once\, to protect themselves and their clients\, the redoubtable owners of the Right Sort Marriage Bureau are once again on the case. \nAllison Montclair (a pseudonym for Alan Gordon) grew up devouring hand-me-down Agatha Christie paperbacks and James Bond movies. As a result of this deplorable upbringing\, Montclair became addicted to tales of crime\, intrigue\, and espionage. Montclair is the author of the award-winning Sparks & Bainbridge historical mystery series\, which begins with The Right Sort of Man. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Max Tucci — The Delmonico Way: Sublime Entertaining and Legendary Recipes from the Restaurant that Made New York
DESCRIPTION:Located in the heart of Wall Street\, Delmonico’s from 1827 to the 1980s shaped New York City’s restaurant scene. Under the original ownership of the Delmonico brothers\, Pietro and Giovanni\, Delmonico’s introduced the first farm-to-table concept\, à la carte dining — complete with white tablecloths and menus — but most notably created the phenomenon called the “power lunch.” The impact of World War I and the era of Prohibition caused the family to cease operations\, shuttering the restaurant in 1923. In 1926\, Oscar Tucci\, a Tuscan immigrant\, took over ownership and developed a strict code of hospitality\, etiquette\, and operations coupled with legendary libations and superb fare known as the Delmonico way. \nWilton Library will welcome local author Max Tucci\, Oscar’s grandson\, for an author talk about The Delmonico Way\, which welcomes readers to a world when dining out was a glamorous affair. Max and his celebrity chef friends offer timeless recipes and he shares his tips for recreating the magic of the Delmonico way at home. Tucci is a writer and a TV and radio personality\, and an award-winning producer and host of the “Max & Friends” podcast. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. Wilton Library will receive a portion of the book sale proceeds. \nGOOD Morning Wilton is the media sponsor of the library’s author talks. \nRegistration is required. To register and for more information\, visit the Wilton Library website\, call the library’s reference librarians at 203.762.6350 or register via email.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Melissa Clark–Dinner in French: My Recipes by Way of France: A Cookbook–CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nThe New York Times star food writer Melissa Clark breaks down the new French classics with 150 recipes that reflect a modern yet distinctly French sensibility in Dinner in French. \nA Q&A will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend but registration highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Book signing and purchase will be available courtesy of Elm Street Books of New Canaan. The media sponsor is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nJust as Julia Child brought French cooking to twentieth-century America\, so now Clark brings French cooking into the 21st century. She first fell in love with France and French food as a child; her parents spent their August vacations traversing the country in search of the best meals with Melissa and her sister in tow. Near to her heart\, France is where Melissa’s family learned to cook and eat. And as her own culinary identity blossomed\, so too did her understanding of why French food is beloved by Americans. \nNow\, as one of the nation’s favorite cookbook authors and food writers\, Melissa updates classic French techniques and dishes to reflect how we cook\, shop\, and eat today. With recipes such as Salade Nicoise with Haricot Vert\, Cornmeal and Harissa Soufflé\, Scalloped Potato Gratin\, Lamb Shank Cassoulet\, Ratatouille Sheet-Pan Chicken\, Campari Olive Oil Cake\, and Apricot Tarte Tatin (to name a few)\, Dinner in French will quickly become a go-to resource and endure as an indispensable classic. \nMelissa Clark is the author of Dinner\, Dinner in an Instant\, and Comfort in an Instant and is a staff writer for The New York Times Food section\, where she writes the wildly popular food column\, “A Good Appetite.” The winner of multiple James Beard and IACP awards\, Melissa is the host of the “Weeknight Kitchen” podcast on The Splendid Table. SUMMARY:An Evening with Mitch Albom to Benefit Circle of Care
DESCRIPTION:Join the Circle of Care for an intimate conversation with NY Times best selling author Mitch Albom\, about his latest book\, Finding Chika. It will be an inspirational evening filled with funny and tender anecdotes and moving photos and video from his time with the amazing Chika and the story about a little girl\, an earthquake and the making of a family. \nThe author of Tuesdays With Morrie returns to nonfiction to celebrate Chika\, a young Haitian orphan who forever changed his heart. Through the operation of the Have Faith Haiti Orphanage in Port Au Prince and in reaction to the 2010 earthquake devastation\, Albom met his daughter\, Chika. The young orphan had developed a life-threatening brain tumor and with no doctors in Haiti able to help her\, Albom brought Chika to America. The story follows their two-year\, around-the-world journey to find a cure for an inoperable brain tumor. Told in hindsight\, and through conversations with Chika herself\, this is Albom at his most poignant and vulnerable. He creates a beautiful portrait of what it means to be a family\, regardless of how it is made. “This is the hardest yet most important book I have written or may ever write\,” says Albom. \nHosting the event is a Connecticut based organization dedicated to the same advocacy Albom addresses in Chika. Circle of Care is a non-profit supporting the journey families of children with cancer face. To support Circle of Care and their shared mission to help children and families with cancer\, Albom has waived his speaking fee for the Jan. 30 event. \nMitch Albom is a bestselling author\, screenwriter\, playwright and nationally syndicated columnist. Tuesdays with Morrie\, which spent four straight years atop The New York Times list\, is now the bestselling memoir of all time. Albom has founded nine charities in Detroit\, including the first-ever 24-hour medical clinic for homeless children in America. He also continues to operate and visit monthly the Have Faith Haiti Orphanage. \nJoin Circle of Care and its intimate conversation with Mitch Albom as he reflects on his life-changing experience with Chika through anecdotes\, photos\, and videos. The event will last between 45 minutes to an hour. Tickets can be found at the Circle of Care website and Mitch Albom’s website. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Anne Gardiner Perkins Author Talk–"Yale Needs Women: How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant"
DESCRIPTION:The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Yale University first admitting women students. In the summer of 1969\, young women across the country sent in applications to Yale University for the first time. The Ivy League institution dedicated to graduating ‘1\,000 male leaders’ each year had finally decided to open its doors to the nation’s top female students. \nThe landmark decision was a huge step forward for women’s equality in education. However\, this first class of women found themselves immersed in an overwhelmingly male culture they were unprepared to face. Yale Needs Women\, an unflinching account of a group of young women striving for change\, is an inspiring story of strength\, resilience\, and courage that continues to resonate today. \nAnne Gardiner Perkins attended Yale University\, where she earned her BA in history and was the first woman editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. She is also a Rhodes Scholar and completed a BA in modern history at Balliol College\, Oxford University. She has spent her life in education\, from urban high school teacher to state-level policy maker. She received her Ph.D. in higher education at UMass Boston and has presented papers on higher education at leading conferences. A Q&A will follow the talk. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

SUMMARY:Learn to Reset\, Recharge and Reconnect with Your Community
DESCRIPTION:Our modern conveniences are overwhelming us. We own twice the amount of stuff we did 50 years ago\, purging our spaces only to mindlessly click and fill them again. Social media overuse frazzles psychologists and impedes genuine connection. Online dating is at an all-time high across age groups; yet one-third of users never swipe right into offline romance. Americans bill more out-of-office hours than any other advanced economy\, and auto-binge-watching has replaced the much-anticipated movie marathon. \nIn a world architected for “overwhelm\,” it’s no wonder we can feel exhausted and unsure. We prize sisterhood and community among our greatest assets. Yet\, too often we get stuck in ruts and time passes swiftly. We feel a call to help others but struggle to find the time or energy to move forward and create lasting change. \nTo learn more about how you can reset\, recharge and reconnect with your community\, come to Wilton Library on Thursday\, May 9 at 7 p.m.. Wilton’s own Jacqueline Raposo will be speaking about The Me\, Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness\, her first book. \nRaposo will talk about how our brains can sometimes accidentally wire us for inactivity. She’ll explain what we can do to reset\, regroup and recharge ourselves first and foremost. Then\, with this renewed focus on “self\,” we can better connect to the communities we wish to serve. \nRaposo is an expert interviewer and writer of articles for Food & Wine\, Saveur and Cosmopolitan. She is the producer and co-host of “Love Bites Radio\,” and she connects chronic illness/disability advocates with protest events as the co-founder of #MarchingWithMe. \nAdmission is $20\, $10 for students. Please register in advance\, as seating is limited. Mail your check payable to “P.E.O. Chapter W” to Del Overby\, 105 Pine Ridge Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or register online (a small fee applies). \nA light dessert reception will follow\, with an opportunity to meet Raposo and purchase her book\, courtesy of Elm Street Books. \nThis event is a fundraiser sponsored by The PEO Sisterhood\, an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes educational opportunities for women. All proceeds will benefit PEO grants\, awards and scholarships to support women’s education. For information about PEO\, email Debbie Zucco or visit the PEO website.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Tyler Kepner\, "K: A History of Baseball in 10 Pitches"
DESCRIPTION:From New York Times national baseball writer Tyler Kepner comes K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches – a deep dive into the stories\, stats\, folklore\, and nostalgia behind America’s pastime told through vivid anecdotes and insights\, examining the fastball\, the curveball\, the changeup\, the slider\, the cutter\, the sinker\, the splitter\, the knuckleball\, the screwball\, and the spitball. \nKepner has found that pitchers almost always love to talk about their craft:  18 of the 25 pitchers with the most strikeouts in the history of the sport have shared their perspectives with him\, including Nolan Ryan\, Steve Carlton\, Bob Gibson\, Randy Johnson\, and Pedro Martinez. \nKepner\, who lives in Wilton\, started covering baseball as a teenager\, interviewing players for a homemade magazine that was featured in The New York Times in 1989. He attended Vanderbilt University on the Grantland Rice/Fred Russell sportswriting scholarship\, then covered the Angels and the Mariners.
