DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library during this baseball playoff season for a conversation on the sport by two Wilton High School graduates.  Ed Porcelli and Jonathan Silverman will discuss their books about baseball and how they connect to the current state of the national pastime. Porcelli’s book\, The Last Dance: The Eagles’ Rise to Extinction\, is about the last season of a collegiate baseball team\, while Silverman’s edited collection\, Astros and Asterisks: Houston’s Sign-Stealing Scandal\, Explained\, covers the 2017 baseball scandal in context. \nPorcelli is an entrepreneur\, baseball coach\, and former professional baseball player who has been involved with baseball for 45 years. He is also the author of Scabs Heal All Wounds\, about his experience playing with Milwaukee Brewers during the 1994-95 MLB strike that caused the cancellation of the 1994 World Series. \nSilverman is a professor and chair of English at UMass Lowell. He is also co-author with Michael Hinds of Johnny Cash International: How and Why the World Loves the Man in Black\, which recently won the biennial Peggy O’Brien Book Award. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an author talk at Wilton Library. \nIn Allison Montclair’s The Lady from Burma\, murder once again stalks the proprietors of The Right Sort Marriage Bureau in the surprisingly dangerous landscape of post-World War II London. \nIn the immediate post-war days of London\, two unlikely partners have undertaken an even more unlikely\, if necessary\, business venture – The Right Sort Marriage Bureau. The two partners are Miss Iris Sparks\, a woman with a dangerous – and never discussed – past in British intelligence and Mrs. Gwendolyn Bainbridge\, a war widow with a young son entangled in a complicated aristocratic family. Mostly their clients are people trying to start (or restart) their lives in this much-changed world\, but their new client is something different. A happily married woman has come to them to find a new wife for her husband. Dying of cancer\, she wants the two to make sure her entomologist\, academic husband finds someone new once she passes. \nShortly thereafter\, she’s found dead in Epping Forest\, in what appears to be a suicide. But that doesn’t make sense to either Sparks or Bainbridge. At the same time\, Bainbridge is attempting to regain legal control of her life\, opposed by the conservator who has been managing her assets – perhaps not always in her best interest. When that conservator is found dead\, Bainbridge herself is one of the prime suspects. Attempting to make sense of two deaths at once\, to protect themselves and their clients\, the redoubtable owners of the Right Sort Marriage Bureau are once again on the case. \nAllison Montclair (a pseudonym for Alan Gordon) grew up devouring hand-me-down Agatha Christie paperbacks and James Bond movies. As a result of this deplorable upbringing\, Montclair became addicted to tales of crime\, intrigue\, and espionage. DESCRIPTION:Located in the heart of Wall Street\, Delmonico’s from 1827 to the 1980s shaped New York City’s restaurant scene. Under the original ownership of the Delmonico brothers\, Pietro and Giovanni\, Delmonico’s introduced the first farm-to-table concept\, à la carte dining — complete with white tablecloths and menus — but most notably created the phenomenon called the “power lunch.” The impact of World War I and the era of Prohibition caused the family to cease operations\, shuttering the restaurant in 1923. In 1926\, Oscar Tucci\, a Tuscan immigrant\, took over ownership and developed a strict code of hospitality\, etiquette\, and operations coupled with legendary libations and superb fare known as the Delmonico way. \nWilton Library will welcome local author Max Tucci\, Oscar’s grandson\, for an author talk about The Delmonico Way\, which welcomes readers to a world when dining out was a glamorous affair. Max and his celebrity chef friends offer timeless recipes and he shares his tips for recreating the magic of the Delmonico way at home. The new travel book encourages travelers to visit all of the towns and villages of our beautiful and unique state. From the quaint splendor of the town of Kent in the northwest hills of Connecticut to the great restaurants that dot the shoreline of Westbrook to New Britain’s industrial roots\, to Wilton’s colonial past\, Podskoch has compiled little known facts and fascinating information about all 169 towns\, cities and villages in the State of Connecticut in the hopes of encouraging people to visit every one of them. \nJoin this informal “club” by getting out and about\, and taking the road less traveled! The book has a space for travelers to journal about their experiences and a place to get the book stamped or signed by a resident or business in each town. The reward for visiting all of Connecticut’s towns\, cities and villages will be a “Leatherman” patch which commemorates this legendary wanderer\, who during the late 1800s wore leather clothes and travelled a 365-mile circuit in approximately 34 days between the Hudson and Connecticut Rivers while camping out in caves. Podskoch will help organize a dinner in the fall of next year to honor those determined souls who have made it to every municipality\, all 169! During that event they will get their Leatherman keepsakes. “Anyone can attend\,” Podskoch says. “Members will share their stories and adventures.” It is worth noting that the Old Leatherman is well documented as visiting Wilton regularly\, and could be spotted at the Rock Lake Reservoir. \nThere is no membership fee\, just a desire to experience all of Connecticut. Adults and children of all ages can be members. What a great adventure for families\, grandparents\, and their grandchildren\, or go by oneself. Most members will travel by car while others might use a bike\, motorcycle\, or maybe a canoe! “It doesn’t matter what age people are or what means of transportation people use to get there\,” the 74-year-old Podskosh said. “The whole idea is to get people to see the many beautiful places in our state.” \nThe Connecticut guide book\, Podskoch’s ninth book\, entailed nearly two years of collaborative effort as he recruited Connecticut writers\, historians and officials. ­Each contributed a passage about their town’s histories\, haunts; favorite food fixes and historic landmarks. The Wilton chapter of the book was provided by Allison Gray Sanders\, co-director of the Wilton Historical Society. \nAfter Podskoch’s talk\, the book will be available for sale and signing.
