SUMMARY:Author Talk: Dana Buckmir
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut native and author Dana Buckmir brings her story about surviving domestic violence and reclaiming her voice to Wilton Library during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Her most recent memoir\, Everything Will Be Okay\, will be the topic of conversation between Buckmir\, Chief Operating Officer of the Domestic Violence Crisis Center Ann Rodwell-Lawton\, and Deputy Chief Robert Cipolla from the Wilton Police Department. \nBuckmir is the author of Everything Will Be Okay and Plenty of Laughs: One Woman’s Journey Navigating the Online Dating Waters. She also contributes to a biweekly dating column called\, Oh Dana that gives advice on relationship topics. Buckmir believes that storytelling not only entertains\, but reminds us that we are sharing a collective experience that makes us a little more connected and a little less lonely. This philosophy and her teaching background inspired her to create a workshop and coaching program\, Write your story: From Idea to Publication\, where she mentors aspiring authors. \nAnn Rodwell-Lawton is the Chief Operating Officer of the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC). Ann oversees DVCC’s community initiatives\, direct services programs\, and quality assurance efforts. Ann has worked in the fields of domestic violence and sexual violence for ten years. She integrates victim-centered approaches and brings a trauma-informed lens to the work at DVCC. \nBuckmir will be selling her book after the program and can accept cash\, check\, venmo\, or zelle as payment. \nCo-sponsored by Wilton Library\, the Domestic Violence Crisis Center\, the Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, the Wilton Police Department\, and Wilton Social Services. \nRegistration is required. Please register on the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Allison Montclair - The Lady from Burma
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an author talk at Wilton Library. \nIn Allison Montclair’s The Lady from Burma\, murder once again stalks the proprietors of The Right Sort Marriage Bureau in the surprisingly dangerous landscape of post-World War II London. \nIn the immediate post-war days of London\, two unlikely partners have undertaken an even more unlikely\, if necessary\, business venture – The Right Sort Marriage Bureau. The two partners are Miss Iris Sparks\, a woman with a dangerous – and never discussed – past in British intelligence and Mrs. Gwendolyn Bainbridge\, a war widow with a young son entangled in a complicated aristocratic family. Mostly their clients are people trying to start (or restart) their lives in this much-changed world\, but their new client is something different. A happily married woman has come to them to find a new wife for her husband. Dying of cancer\, she wants the two to make sure her entomologist\, academic husband finds someone new once she passes. \nShortly thereafter\, she’s found dead in Epping Forest\, in what appears to be a suicide. But that doesn’t make sense to either Sparks or Bainbridge. At the same time\, Bainbridge is attempting to regain legal control of her life\, opposed by the conservator who has been managing her assets – perhaps not always in her best interest. When that conservator is found dead\, Bainbridge herself is one of the prime suspects. Attempting to make sense of two deaths at once\, to protect themselves and their clients\, the redoubtable owners of the Right Sort Marriage Bureau are once again on the case. \nAllison Montclair (a pseudonym for Alan Gordon) grew up devouring hand-me-down Agatha Christie paperbacks and James Bond movies. As a result of this deplorable upbringing\, Montclair became addicted to tales of crime\, intrigue\, and espionage. Montclair is the author of the award-winning Sparks & Bainbridge historical mystery series\, which begins with The Right Sort of Man. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Stephanie Kramer - Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Kramer is the author of Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work. This ‘labor’ or love was written over three years late at night and during her children’s naps because of her desire to create a groundswell of support. With original research and hundreds of inspiring interviews\, she does just that— sharing five powerful principles to find perspective\, create your balance\, cultivate community\, communicate your needs\, and embrace your shift in identity throughout each phase of pregnancy\, starting with the moment you decide you want to become a working mom-to-be. In Carry Strong\, Kramer flips the script. This isn’t about powering through pregnancy at work. It’s about being powerful and pregnant at work. \nKramer is a tenured beauty industry executive today serving as the Chief Human Resources Officer of L’Oréal USA in New York City and an adjunct professor of management communication in the graduate business program at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is the proud mother of two young children and deeply believes that you can do it all\, not at the same time\, and absolutely not alone. \nThis author talk is co-sponsored by the Wilton Woman’s Club. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website or call 203.762.6350.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Max Tucci — The Delmonico Way: Sublime Entertaining and Legendary Recipes from the Restaurant that Made New York
DESCRIPTION:Located in the heart of Wall Street\, Delmonico’s from 1827 to the 1980s shaped New York City’s restaurant scene. Under the original ownership of the Delmonico brothers\, Pietro and Giovanni\, Delmonico’s introduced the first farm-to-table concept\, à la carte dining — complete with white tablecloths and menus — but most notably created the phenomenon called the “power lunch.” The impact of World War I and the era of Prohibition caused the family to cease operations\, shuttering the restaurant in 1923. In 1926\, Oscar Tucci\, a Tuscan immigrant\, took over ownership and developed a strict code of hospitality\, etiquette\, and operations coupled with legendary libations and superb fare known as the Delmonico way. \nWilton Library will welcome local author Max Tucci\, Oscar’s grandson\, for an author talk about The Delmonico Way\, which welcomes readers to a world when dining out was a glamorous affair. Max and his celebrity chef friends offer timeless recipes and he shares his tips for recreating the magic of the Delmonico way at home. Tucci is a writer and a TV and radio personality\, and an award-winning producer and host of the “Max & Friends” podcast. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. Wilton Library will receive a portion of the book sale proceeds. \nGOOD Morning Wilton is the media sponsor of the library’s author talks. \nRegistration is required. To register and for more information\, visit the Wilton Library website\, call the library’s reference librarians at 203.762.6350 or register via email.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Melissa Clark–Dinner in French: My Recipes by Way of France: A Cookbook–CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nThe New York Times star food writer Melissa Clark breaks down the new French classics with 150 recipes that reflect a modern yet distinctly French sensibility in Dinner in French. \nA Q&A will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend but registration highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Book signing and purchase will be available courtesy of Elm Street Books of New Canaan. The media sponsor is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nJust as Julia Child brought French cooking to twentieth-century America\, so now Clark brings French cooking into the 21st century. She first fell in love with France and French food as a child; her parents spent their August vacations traversing the country in search of the best meals with Melissa and her sister in tow. Near to her heart\, France is where Melissa’s family learned to cook and eat. And as her own culinary identity blossomed\, so too did her understanding of why French food is beloved by Americans. \nNow\, as one of the nation’s favorite cookbook authors and food writers\, Melissa updates classic French techniques and dishes to reflect how we cook\, shop\, and eat today. With recipes such as Salade Nicoise with Haricot Vert\, Cornmeal and Harissa Soufflé\, Scalloped Potato Gratin\, Lamb Shank Cassoulet\, Ratatouille Sheet-Pan Chicken\, Campari Olive Oil Cake\, and Apricot Tarte Tatin (to name a few)\, Dinner in French will quickly become a go-to resource and endure as an indispensable classic. \nMelissa Clark is the author of Dinner\, Dinner in an Instant\, and Comfort in an Instant and is a staff writer for The New York Times Food section\, where she writes the wildly popular food column\, “A Good Appetite.” The winner of multiple James Beard and IACP awards\, Melissa is the host of the “Weeknight Kitchen” podcast on The Splendid Table. Melissa earned an MFA in writing from Columbia\, and her work has been selected for the Best American Food Writing. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Mitch Albom to Benefit Circle of Care
DESCRIPTION:Join the Circle of Care for an intimate conversation with NY Times best selling author Mitch Albom\, about his latest book\, Finding Chika. It will be an inspirational evening filled with funny and tender anecdotes and moving photos and video from his time with the amazing Chika and the story about a little girl\, an earthquake and the making of a family. \nThe author of Tuesdays With Morrie returns to nonfiction to celebrate Chika\, a young Haitian orphan who forever changed his heart. Through the operation of the Have Faith Haiti Orphanage in Port Au Prince and in reaction to the 2010 earthquake devastation\, Albom met his daughter\, Chika. The young orphan had developed a life-threatening brain tumor and with no doctors in Haiti able to help her\, Albom brought Chika to America. The story follows their two-year\, around-the-world journey to find a cure for an inoperable brain tumor. Told in hindsight\, and through conversations with Chika herself\, this is Albom at his most poignant and vulnerable. He creates a beautiful portrait of what it means to be a family\, regardless of how it is made. “This is the hardest yet most important book I have written or may ever write\,” says Albom. \nHosting the event is a Connecticut based organization dedicated to the same advocacy Albom addresses in Chika. Circle of Care is a non-profit supporting the journey families of children with cancer face. To support Circle of Care and their shared mission to help children and families with cancer\, Albom has waived his speaking fee for the Jan. 30 event. \nMitch Albom is a bestselling author\, screenwriter\, playwright and nationally syndicated columnist. Tuesdays with Morrie\, which spent four straight years atop The New York Times list\, is now the bestselling memoir of all time. Albom has founded nine charities in Detroit\, including the first-ever 24-hour medical clinic for homeless children in America. He also continues to operate and visit monthly the Have Faith Haiti Orphanage. \nJoin Circle of Care and its intimate conversation with Mitch Albom as he reflects on his life-changing experience with Chika through anecdotes\, photos\, and videos. The event will last between 45 minutes to an hour. Tickets can be found at the Circle of Care website and Mitch Albom’s website. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Anne Gardiner Perkins Author Talk–"Yale Needs Women: How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant"
DESCRIPTION:The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Yale University first admitting women students. In the summer of 1969\, young women across the country sent in applications to Yale University for the first time. The Ivy League institution dedicated to graduating ‘1\,000 male leaders’ each year had finally decided to open its doors to the nation’s top female students. \nThe landmark decision was a huge step forward for women’s equality in education. However\, this first class of women found themselves immersed in an overwhelmingly male culture they were unprepared to face. Yale Needs Women\, an unflinching account of a group of young women striving for change\, is an inspiring story of strength\, resilience\, and courage that continues to resonate today. \nAnne Gardiner Perkins attended Yale University\, where she earned her BA in history and was the first woman editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. She is also a Rhodes Scholar and completed a BA in modern history at Balliol College\, Oxford University. She has spent her life in education\, from urban high school teacher to state-level policy maker. She received her Ph.D. in higher education at UMass Boston and has presented papers on higher education at leading conferences. A Q&A will follow the talk. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

SUMMARY:Learn to Reset\, Recharge and Reconnect with Your Community
DESCRIPTION:Our modern conveniences are overwhelming us. We own twice the amount of stuff we did 50 years ago\, purging our spaces only to mindlessly click and fill them again. Social media overuse frazzles psychologists and impedes genuine connection. Online dating is at an all-time high across age groups; yet one-third of users never swipe right into offline romance. Americans bill more out-of-office hours than any other advanced economy\, and auto-binge-watching has replaced the much-anticipated movie marathon. \nIn a world architected for “overwhelm\,” it’s no wonder we can feel exhausted and unsure. We prize sisterhood and community among our greatest assets. Yet\, too often we get stuck in ruts and time passes swiftly. We feel a call to help others but struggle to find the time or energy to move forward and create lasting change. \nTo learn more about how you can reset\, recharge and reconnect with your community\, come to Wilton Library on Thursday\, May 9 at 7 p.m.. Wilton’s own Jacqueline Raposo will be speaking about The Me\, Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness\, her first book. \nRaposo will talk about how our brains can sometimes accidentally wire us for inactivity. She’ll explain what we can do to reset\, regroup and recharge ourselves first and foremost. Then\, with this renewed focus on “self\,” we can better connect to the communities we wish to serve. \nRaposo is an expert interviewer and writer of articles for Food & Wine\, Saveur and Cosmopolitan. She is the producer and co-host of “Love Bites Radio\,” and she connects chronic illness/disability advocates with protest events as the co-founder of #MarchingWithMe. \nAdmission is $20\, $10 for students. Please register in advance\, as seating is limited. Mail your check payable to “P.E.O. Chapter W” to Del Overby\, 105 Pine Ridge Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or register online (a small fee applies). \nA light dessert reception will follow\, with an opportunity to meet Raposo and purchase her book\, courtesy of Elm Street Books. \nThis event is a fundraiser sponsored by The PEO Sisterhood\, an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes educational opportunities for women. All proceeds will benefit PEO grants\, awards and scholarships to support women’s education. For information about PEO\, email Debbie Zucco or visit the PEO website.

DESCRIPTION:From New York Times national baseball writer Tyler Kepner comes K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches – a deep dive into the stories\, stats\, folklore\, and nostalgia behind America’s pastime told through vivid anecdotes and insights\, examining the fastball\, the curveball\, the changeup\, the slider\, the cutter\, the sinker\, the splitter\, the knuckleball\, the screwball\, and the spitball. \nKepner has found that pitchers almost always love to talk about their craft:  18 of the 25 pitchers with the most strikeouts in the history of the sport have shared their perspectives with him\, including Nolan Ryan\, Steve Carlton\, Bob Gibson\, Randy Johnson\, and Pedro Martinez. \nKepner\, who lives in Wilton\, started covering baseball as a teenager\, interviewing players for a homemade magazine that was featured in The New York Times in 1989. SUMMARY:Book Talk: Connecticut 169 Club: Your Passport and Guide to Exploring Connecticut by Marty Podskosh
DESCRIPTION:Come to a Wilton Historical Society presentation and book signing by author and historian Marty Podskoch discussing his new book\, The Connecticut 169 Club: Your Passport and Guide to Exploring Connecticut\, which includes a light lunch. The new travel book encourages travelers to visit all of the towns and villages of our beautiful and unique state. From the quaint splendor of the town of Kent in the northwest hills of Connecticut to the great restaurants that dot the shoreline of Westbrook to New Britain’s industrial roots\, to Wilton’s colonial past\, Podskoch has compiled little known facts and fascinating information about all 169 towns\, cities and villages in the State of Connecticut in the hopes of encouraging people to visit every one of them. \nJoin this informal “club” by getting out and about\, and taking the road less traveled! The book has a space for travelers to journal about their experiences and a place to get the book stamped or signed by a resident or business in each town. The reward for visiting all of Connecticut’s towns\, cities and villages will be a “Leatherman” patch which commemorates this legendary wanderer\, who during the late 1800s wore leather clothes and travelled a 365-mile circuit in approximately 34 days between the Hudson and Connecticut Rivers while camping out in caves. Podskoch will help organize a dinner in the fall of next year to honor those determined souls who have made it to every municipality\, all 169! During that event they will get their Leatherman keepsakes. “Anyone can attend\,” Podskoch says. “Members will share their stories and adventures.” It is worth noting that the Old Leatherman is well documented as visiting Wilton regularly\, and could be spotted at the Rock Lake Reservoir. \nThere is no membership fee\, just a desire to experience all of Connecticut. Adults and children of all ages can be members. What a great adventure for families\, grandparents\, and their grandchildren\, or go by oneself. Most members will travel by car while others might use a bike\, motorcycle\, or maybe a canoe! “It doesn’t matter what age people are or what means of transportation people use to get there\,” the 74-year-old Podskosh said. “The whole idea is to get people to see the many beautiful places in our state.” \nThe Connecticut guide book\, Podskoch’s ninth book\, entailed nearly two years of collaborative effort as he recruited Connecticut writers\, historians and officials. Each contributed a passage about their town’s histories\, haunts; favorite food fixes and historic landmarks. The Wilton chapter of the book was provided by Allison Gray Sanders\, co-director of the Wilton Historical Society. \nAfter Podskoch’s talk\, the book will be available for sale and signing. The hard cover 8.5 x 11 book has 376 pages with hundreds of photos & maps and sells for $24.95. \nThere is no charge to attend for Wilton Historical Society members; the non-member fee is $10 a person. Please register for this talk and light luncheon:  call 203.762.7257 or email the Society. \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jacqueline Raposo – The Me Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness
DESCRIPTION:Wiltonian and journalist Jacqueline Raposo finds herself sick\, single\, broke\, and wandering in a fog. Fighting chronic illness\, debt and other low points in her life she embarks on subtracting some of her most constant habits from her life – social media\, shopping\, sugar\, and negative thoughts – for periods of 30 to 90 days over the course of one year. \nIn this intimately curated search for self-improvement (a quest that readers can easily personalize for themselves)\, Raposo confesses to the sometimes violent and profound shifts in her social interactions\, physical health\, and sense of self-worth.
