SUMMARY:Wilton Woman's Club 2024-25 Season Kick Off Party
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Woman’s Club will kick off its 2024-25 year on Tuesday\, Sept. 10 with a Kick Off the Season Party at Old Town Hall at 6 p.m. All are welcome to come together to catch up with old friends\, meet new friends\, and hear about club plans for the upcoming year. \nThe club will focus this year on strengthening social bonds among community members in Wilton. Each month includes Dinner Club get-togethers\, Lunch Club get-togethers\, Wednesday morning walks on the NRVT Trail\, Book Club meeting nights\, and regular monthly club meetings. Visit the website for details\, to join\, and to RSVP. \nA highlight again this year will be a small-group trip to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx\, led by none other than Arthur Avenue expert and Wilton First Selectman Toni Boucher. On that day\, the group will tour bakeries\, delicatessens\, shops\, and eat together at one of the many delicious and authentic Italian restaurants there. \nThe Wilton Woman’s Club was founded in 1966 by Betty Sternad and friends.  Since the start\, the club has contributed to the common good through different community service projects. Today\, the WWC is the only group that goes to the CT Food Bank each week to bring fresh meat and produce to the Wilton Food Pantry. The club also serves lunch to seniors at Ogden House and makes meals at holiday times to deliver to homebound residents. \nLast April\, the WWC held its 15th Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser at Rolling Hills Country Club and raised almost $25\,000 to donate to Waveny-Visiting Nurse & Hospice to provide professional caregiver respite. The 2025 beneficiary will be announced on Dec. 4 at the WWC Holiday Lunch. \n“We look forward to meeting more women in Wilton this year\, contributing to the community\, and strengthening bonds. Come join us and meet a whole new group of people! We look forward to seeing you\,” WWC President Maria Wilcox said.

SUMMARY:Author Mark Oppenheimer Speaks on "Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library and the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism for an important talk\, “Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today\,” by Mark Oppenheimer\, on Monday\, March 25 at 7 p.m. Oppenheimer is a NY Times columnist\, Pulitzer grantee and the author of Squirrel Hill\, the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. \nSquirrel Hill\, Pittsburgh is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in the country\, known for its tight-knit community and the profusion of multigenerational families. On October 27\, 2018\, a gunman killed eleven Jews who were worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue — the most deadly anti-Semitic attack in American history. \nMany neighborhoods would be understandably subsumed by despair and recrimination after such an event\, but not this one. Oppenheimer poignantly shifts the focus away from the criminal and his crime\, and instead presents the historic\, spirited community at the center of this heartbreak. He even speaks with residents and nonresidents\, Jews and gentiles\, survivors and witnesses\, teenagers and seniors\, activists and historians. \nTogether\, these stories provide a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of collective grief\, love\, support\, and revival. Yet\, he additionally details the difficult dialogue and messy confrontations that Squirrel Hill had to face in the process of healing. These necessary steps are a part of true growth and understanding in any community. He has reverently captured the vibrancy and caring that still characterize Squirrel Hill\, and it is this phenomenal resilience that can provide inspiration to any place burdened with discrimination and hate. \nOppenheimer has covered American religion for 25 years. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Yale\, and has taught at Stanford\, Wesleyan\, Wellesley\, NYU\, Boston College\, and Yale. He also was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. On top of that\, he wrote the “Beliefs” column for The New York Times from 2010 – 2016\, and has written for The New Yorker\, The Nation\, GQ\, Slate\, and many more. Oppenheimer notably created Unorthodox\, the world’s most popular podcast about Jewish life and culture\, and more recently hosted the multi-part podcast\, Gatecrashers. This discussed the history of Jews and antisemitism at Ivy League schools. He is the author of five books\, including Squirrel Hill. Since 2023\, he has been Director of Open Learning at American Jewish University and lives in Connecticut with his wife\, four daughters\, one son\, and two dogs. \nElm Street Books will sell copies of the book\, which the author will sign after the program. \nPresented in partnership with Wilton Library\, the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism\, and the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, serving Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding\, the media sponsor for this event is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required online or call 203.761.6334.

SUMMARY:Confronting Acts of Hate in Our Community
DESCRIPTION:Please join Temple B’nai Chaim and invited guests to a special town hall meeting\, “Confronting Acts of Hate in Our Community\,” on Sunday\, Feb. 4\, at 2 p.m. \nIn light of the unprecedented rise in the number of hate-inspired incidents within our local communities\, Temple B’nai Chaim’s Social Action Group to Confront Antisemitism and Hate ─ in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League’s Kulanu Program\, the Riverbrook YMCA\, and the Wilton Library ─ will offer a two-hour community strengthening program led by faith and local community leaders. \nPanelists representing various faiths and marginalized groups ─ including Cantor Harriet Dunkerley (Temple B’nai Chaim)\, Father Reggie Norman (Our Lady of Fatima)\, Sohair Omar (Muslim community representative)\, Sarvesh Damle (Hindu community representative)\, and Rachel Simon\, ED (LGBT+ community\, Norwalk Triangle Center) ─ will share their communities’ sensitivities and experiences with hate incidents. U.S. Rep. Jim Himes will also speak. \nThe program sponsors hope that this community program will facilitate the formation of a supportive network that will meet periodically to follow up on this forum’s discussions and implement ways to prevent hate speech and acts of hate from invading our community. Most importantly\, its work will address developing a coordinated system of responses to future hate incidents and help ensure support for those who are victims of such acts. \nRegistration is required\, register online.

SUMMARY:Town Hall with Wilton Town Administrator Matt Knickerbocker
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 30 at 7 p.m.\, Wilton Town Administrator Matt Knickerbocker will meet with residents in an open town hall forum at Wilton Library. \nThe Town Administrator role is new to our town governance system\, and Knickerbocker is the first person ever to serve in this capacity. He began the job in September 2022\, so this forum at the six-month mark will be a great opportunity for him to discuss his early on-the-job insights. \nHe’ll speak about his work in implementing the mission of streamlining Town operations and finding new efficiencies\, as outlined by First Selectwoman Lynne Vanderslice and the other Board of Selectmen members when the position of Town Administrator was created. He will also briefly touch on the history of Wilton’s classic New England “town meeting” form of government and the highly interconnected functions that exist between public\, private and civic organizations that help it function successfully. \nPrior to coming to Wilton\, Knickerbocker was First Selectman in Bethel for 13 years. During that time\, he worked closely with Vanderslice on various municipal and regional projects as part of WestCOG (Western CT Council of Governments). He was also a member of the Bethel Board of Education for 10 years\, serving seven years as chairman\, during which he oversaw the renovation of two school buildings and a comprehensive curriculum revamp. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Wilton Library and Wilton League of Women Voters. \nConstituents can register for this event on the Wilton Library website. Questions can be submitted in advance via email. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Wilton Library and Wilton League of Women Voters. \n  \n
