DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library as State Senator Ceci Maher and State Representative Keith Denning discuss the 2023 Legislative Session. \nRegistration is suggested. Register on the Wilton Library’s website or call 203.762.6334. \nCeci Maher grew up in Stamford and resides in Wilton\, where their children attended public schools. As a licensed master social worker\, Ceci worked with children and youth in a psychiatric hospital\, and then moved to leading a variety of local nonprofits including the Horizons National Student Enrichment Program\, Person-to-Person\, and Sandy Hook Promise. In 2022\, Ceci Maher was elected to represent the 26th state Senate district which covers parts of Weston\, Wilton\, Westport\, Ridgefield\, Redding\, Darien\, New Canaan and Stamford. This was be the senator’s first term in the state Senate. She is Chair\, the Children’s Committee; Vice Chair\, Higher Education & Employment Advancement; and. Member\, Energy & Technology\, Human Services\, Internship\, and Judiciary. \nBorn and raised in Indiana\, Keith Denning attended Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne to earn his Nursing degree. He then went to Wake-Forest Bowman Gray Medical Center for his certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. He currently resides in Wilton\, Connecticut and retired in May of 2022 after 39 years of practice. Keith has been a volunteer on medical missions with Operation Smile and the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund and has provided free medical care all over the world. With a strong tradition of serving in all the communities where he has lived\, Keith is now in his first term in Hartford. He serves on the Transportation\, Public Health and Insurance and Real Estate Committees.

SUMMARY:Town Hall with Wilton Town Administrator Matt Knickerbocker
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 30 at 7 p.m.\, Wilton Town Administrator Matt Knickerbocker will meet with residents in an open town hall forum at Wilton Library. \nThe Town Administrator role is new to our town governance system\, and Knickerbocker is the first person ever to serve in this capacity. He began the job in September 2022\, so this forum at the six-month mark will be a great opportunity for him to discuss his early on-the-job insights. \nHe’ll speak about his work in implementing the mission of streamlining Town operations and finding new efficiencies\, as outlined by First Selectwoman Lynne Vanderslice and the other Board of Selectmen members when the position of Town Administrator was created. He will also briefly touch on the history of Wilton’s classic New England “town meeting” form of government and the highly interconnected functions that exist between public\, private and civic organizations that help it function successfully. \nPrior to coming to Wilton\, Knickerbocker was First Selectman in Bethel for 13 years. During that time\, he worked closely with Vanderslice on various municipal and regional projects as part of WestCOG (Western CT Council of Governments). He was also a member of the Bethel Board of Education for 10 years\, serving seven years as chairman\, during which he oversaw the renovation of two school buildings and a comprehensive curriculum revamp. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Wilton Library and Wilton League of Women Voters. \nConstituents can register for this event on the Wilton Library website. SUMMARY:Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics
DESCRIPTION:The mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is to raise funds for and awareness of the Special Olympics movement worldwide. Law enforcement officers from every state and more than 30 countries carry the Flame of Hope in honor of the Special Olympics athletes in their area and around the world. \nThe Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is an international series of torch relays\, run by law enforcement officers\, that lead up to each state or nation’s Special Olympics Summer Games. Law enforcement officers raise money in conjunction with their respective Torch Runs for their local Special Olympics programs. What was originally designed to be an independent law enforcement effort\, has evolved into a joint partnership between Special Olympics and Law Enforcement. \nThe Law Enforcement Torch Run is Special Olympics’ largest grassroots fund-raiser and public awareness vehicle. In 2002\, this international event raised more than $20.5 million for Special Olympics programs. Nearly 80\,000 law enforcement officers carried the Flame of Hope around 50 states\, 32 nations and 10 Canadian provinces and territories raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics. \nThe Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 when Wichita\, Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to raise funds for and increase awareness of Special Olympics. He conceived the idea of a Torch Run as a way to involve local law enforcement personnel in the community with Special Olympics. After three years of successful Torch Runs in Kansas\, LaMunyon presented the program to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). With IACP’s enthusiastic support and leadership\, as well as the involvement of all facets of the law enforcement community\, Sheriff’s associations\, police unions\, state\, county\, municipal\, military\, and federal law enforcement\, and corrections officers\, the Torch Run expanded into seven states by 1985; 43 states by 1986\, and 50 states and 25 nations in 1997.

Sadly in 2019\, when we last observed National Gun Violence Awareness Day\, it was six days after shootings at a municipal building in Virginia Beach that resulted in the death of eleven city employees and a member of the public. Again\, we will gather within days of more horrific shootings.
