SUMMARY:Wilton Menorah Lighting on the Town Green
DESCRIPTION:The Menorah Lighting to usher in Hanukkah in Wilton takes place this Sunday\, Dec. 22 at 5 p.m. on Wilton Center’s Town Green. Hosted by The Schneerson Center of CT and led by Rabbi Levi Stone\, the lighting takes place on the first night of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah\, which begins that evening and ends on Dec. 30. \nThe public is invited to join Wilton officials as the menorah is lit. The event will feature live holiday music\, donuts\, hot potato latkes\, dreidels and other holiday giveaways. These family friendly events are geared to all ages. \nHanukkah\, the festival of lights\, celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the Greek Syrian oppressors in the land of Israel in 160 BCE and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem with the lighting of the Menorah. Although they had only one day’s supply of olive oil\, it miraculously lasted eight full days until new oil was obtained. The Menorah is a symbol of hope and freedom. Hanukkah is celebrated for eight consecutive days with the lighting of one candle the first night and adding an additional light each night until all eight are lit. \nFor more information call 203.635.4118 or visit the Schneerson Center website.

SUMMARY:Wilton's Big Block Party Weekend
DESCRIPTION:In a renewed effort to strengthen neighborhood connections\, create opportunities for face-to-face conversation and play for all ages\, Wilton Youth Council’s Free Play Matters Task Force is thrilled to be able to again promote Wilton’s Big Block Party Weekend. The theme this year is “Building community one block at a time.” \nThis third annual town-wide initiative will be Friday\, June 4\, Saturday\, June 5\, and Sunday\, June 6\, 2021 (with another weekend Friday\, September 17\, and Saturday\, September 19)\, with each road or neighborhood choosing its own day and time. There are no hard and fast rules for the events\, but people are encouraged to think simple and keep it “old-fashioned.” \nInformation for residents who would like to participate: \nWYC’s Big Block Party Weekend is an initiative aimed at connecting neighbors for face-to-face interaction and creating more opportunities for children’s free play. In an effort to bring Wilton families together\, WYC has inspired neighbors all over town to organize old-fashioned block parties during Wilton’s Big Block Party Weekends. \nWhy have a block party? The benefits are endless! Here are the top reasons: \n\nWelcome all of our new neighbors to Wilton\, as well as connect with those we’ve known for longer.\nIncrease a sense of belonging in the community\nGet outside\, make friends and have fun – no excuses are needed to celebrate\nFind neighborhood playmates for your children\nOpportunity for face-to-face connection and conversation\nMeet some of the long-standing neighbors and learn about your community history\nDecrease stress of snow days\, storms\, and emergency situations\nCreate a neighborhood contact list\n\nHow to have a block party? Be a Block Party Captain! Here are some helpful tips: \n\nKeep it simple and low-key (try not to go overboard\, it can make people feel the event is too much work)\nRecruit another neighbor or 2 to help.\nDecide on a location (road\, common space\, or yard).\nDecide what day and time work best for your neighborhood.\nDecide on the type of event – picnic\, barbecue\, potluck\, etc.\nEstablish block boundaries (use natural neighborhood boundaries where possible) to include approximately 20-30 houses. Remember those on adjacent busier roads.\nHave a child create the flyer to put in mailboxes.\nDistribute the flyer in all invited mailboxes — children love to do this task!\nRemember\, keep it simple. Think old-fashioned block parties.\nFinally\, be sure to follow any state and CDC guidelines\n\nWe suggest making a flyer to put in 20-30 mailboxes of neighbors (especially helpful if you don’t know your neighbors) Tips for your flyer: \n\nShare some of the reasons to have a block party (see above).\nSolicit opinions on how to handle the food.\nSuggest possible dates and times for the event.\nUse the flyer to encourage attendance.\nInclude your contact information so your neighbors can email or call you if they would like to help. Most participating neighborhoods have had two or three residents offer to help.\n\nNote Regarding Road Closures: \nWilton Police discourage residents from officially closing their roads – emergency vehicles need to be able to pass. Permits for road closures will only be considered for dead-end roads. To obtain such a permit\, signatures are required from all residents\, plus various town departments. Instead\, some neighborhoods have decided to have their block party in someone’s yard\, at the end of a driveway\, or on the side of their road without obstructing traffic. Experienced block party planners suggest using a combination of balloons\, signs that read “Caution Block Party in Progress\,” and orange cones to alert drivers to the party in progress. \nBlock Party Survival Checklist: \n\nSignage for oncoming cars\nName tags (consider including name\, address\, how long you’ve lived here)\nSign-in sheet (names\, kids’ ages\, address\, phone number\, email address and if your child babysits)\nBug spray and/or citronella candles\nFirst Aid kit\nMusic player\nGarbage bags and recycle bin\nPlates\, napkins\, plastic/silverware\, cups\nPaper towels/wet wipes for cleanup\nCoolers or beverage containers with plenty of ice — don’t forget a bottle opener\nCommunity table(s) for food/drinks and tablecloth(s)\nSunscreen\nHand sanitizer or wipes\nOutdoor games – i.e. Cornhole\, Giant Jenga\, sack races\, egg toss\nFlashlights\, headlamps\, or glow necklaces for children after dark\nConsider hiring a lifeguard\, if children will be near a pool\n\nOn Facebook\, visit “Wilton’s Big Block Party Weekend.”  Organizers are asking residents to share their plans by commenting on the pinned post at the top of the page. SUMMARY:Community Menorah Lighting Ceremony to Light-Up Wilton
DESCRIPTION:The Schneerson Center of CT will be hosting several local area Menorah lightings for the festival of Hanukkah\, which begins the evening Sunday\, Nov. 28 and ends on Monday\, Dec. 6. \nThe Wilton Community Menorah Lighting will be held on Monday\, Nov. 29  at 5:30 p.m. when Rabbi Levi Stone of the Schneerson Center will light the giant outdoor Menorah at the Wilton Town Green. \nHanukkah\, the festival of lights\, celebrates the victory of the small Maccabean Jewish army over the Greek Syrian oppressors in the land of Israel and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem with the lighting of the Menorah. Although they had only one day’s supply of olive oil\, it miraculously lasted eight full days until new oil was obtained. The Menorah is a symbol of hope and freedom. Hanukkah is celebrated for eight consecutive days with the lighting of one candle the first night and increasing each night with an additional light until all eight are lit symbolizing that we are always looking to increase in light and goodness in the world around us. \nThe lighting will include live music and individually wrapped cookies\, gelt\, and dreidels\, and is a welcome event for the whole family. For more information call the Schneerson Center for Jewish Life at 203.635.4118 or visit the website.
