A majority of the works will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library.

SUMMARY:5K Run and Walk to Benefit Education in India
DESCRIPTION:Education is a central Wilton topic–most usually with a very local focus. But now\, one organization with ties to more remote areas in Asia is devoting some of that focus to education overseas. \nA local\, CT chapter of an organization called Ekal Vidyalaya\, made up of families with ties to India\, is organizing a fundraising effort to continue their support of growing education in rural and tribal Indian communities. Ekal Vidyalaya is a movement focused on creating and growing one-teacher schools in remote Indian villages to bring education to all children in the country. Since starting in 1986\, Ekal has become the largest grassroots level non-governmental education and development movement operating in rural India. \nEkal Vidyalaya is organizing 5K Run and Walk on Sunday\, Sept. 16 in Merwin Meadows\, starting at 9 a.m.\, to raise funds to continue their work. Registration to take part in the 5K costs $20 per adult\, $10 per child. \nThe CT chapter of Ekal was started in 2010. That year the group raised funds for 100 schools and has continued to grow 30% every year\, contributing a total of 500+ schools by 2018. There are approximately 50 families in Fairfield County who have been involved in the local effort. 500 schools are part of the 75\,000 schools created by the global effort\, impacting more than 2 million students. \nAccording to the Ekal website\, the movement aims to help eradicate illiteracy from rural and tribal India\, following a philosophy of rural development based on criteria of equality and inclusiveness across all sections of society. \nEkal says each school is managed and run for just $365 a year. The money funds teachers more than physical infrastructure or buildings. It hires and trains teachers\, and aims to utilize physical space free of cost. The website says that Ekal’s administrative costs are less than 10% of contributions and the majority of the organization’s workforce is volunteer. \nFor more information\, contact organizers via email or visit the chapter’s Facebook page.

This is a fun-filled family event with German bier and wine\, bratwurst or chicken\, sauerkraut\, German potato salad\, hot dogs\, french fries and cold soda for the kids. \nMusic will be provided by the Alpine Squeeze who will play all types of music throughout the evening\, with Hans filling in with his accordion during breaks to keep people up and dancing. DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, Oct. 3\, 10\, 17 & 24\, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. \nJudson Scruton leads this four-part Autumn Poetry Seminar Series in which we will do a close reading of five pairs of poems in the context of William Logan’s new book\, Dickinson’s Nerves\, Frost’s Woods\, Poetry in the Shadow of the Past. \nPlease join us on four Wednesdays:  October 3\, 10\, 17\, and 24. Please note: this series is taking place on Wednesdays\, not our usual Thursdays. See the library’s registration link for the concept behind this seminar and the poems that will be examined. \nJudson Scruton\, M.A (The Johns Hopkins University\, The Writing Seminars\, specializing in poetry) has taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. In his career as an educator\, Judson has also directed publications\, communications\, public relations\, and development at a variety of educational institutions in the U.S. and U.K. including the Newberry Library in Chicago. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of English at Fairfield University. \nPoetry packet available at front desk one week before the seminar begins; in addition\, the library will have copies of Logan’s book available for use in the library. SUMMARY:Annual Household HazWaste Collection Event–TOWN of WILTON
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s Annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, Oct. 13. This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. Household hazardous waste collection programs provide an opportunity to manage these wastes in an environmentally safe manner. \nCommon household products that should not end up in our household trash and will be accepted at the event include: \nAerosol Cans (not empty)\nAntifreeze\nArts/Craft Supplies\nAsphalt/Roof Sealer\nBathroom Cleaners\nBrake Fluid\nChemical Fertilizers\nChemistry Kits\nDegreasers\nDisinfectants\nDrain Cleaners\nFire Extinguishers\nFlea Powders/Sprays\nFloor Care Products\nFungicides\nFurniture/Car Polish\nGasoline\nHair Dyes & Sprays\nHerbicides\nHousehold Batteries\nInsecticides/Pesticides\nKerosene\nMetal Polish\nMoth Balls\nNail Polish/Remover\nOven Cleaners\nPaint Strippers/Thinners\nPhoto Chemicals\nPool Chemicals\nRodent Poison\nSolvents\nTile/Toilet Cleaners\nTransmission Fluid \nThis event is for the collection of household hazardous waste only. Paint and electronics will not be accepted. \nThis annual fall event will be held on Saturday\, Oct. 13\, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Miller-Driscoll School Parking Lot on Wolfpit Rd.. The collection is open to all Wilton residents\, as well as residents of Norwalk\, Darien\, Greenwich\, Stamford\, Weston and Westport. Proof of residency (a driver’s license) is required.
