SUMMARY:Birds of Winter in Connecticut Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Over 25 varieties of common backyard birds can be seen in our area in winter\, and there is something very satisfying about feeding these avian friends during the harsh winter months. According to Herb Wilson\, ornithologist and professor emeritus of biology at Colby College\, “Bird feeding is a two-way street. We feed the birds to help them survive but also feed to lure the birds closer to us so that we may enjoy their beauty and behavior. We can start in 1854 with Henry David Thoreau. In his classic reflection Walden\, he writes of tossing half a bushel of unripe corn just outside his cabin and watching the various animals that were attracted to the corn\, including Blue Jays and Black-capped Chickadees.” \nSome species prefer open fields or others\, more forested neighborhoods. At this Birds of Winter in Connecticut workshop for kids\, museum educator Katherine Karlik will talk about identifying local birds that might visit a home feeder. The workshop project is making a birdfeeder using a grapevine ball filled with a mixture of suet\, cornmeal and birdseed. Children will help make their own snack. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child; non-member cost is $15 per child. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nIn 1934 Roger Tory Peterson published the Field Guide to the Birds and not only promoted birding through feeding but gave people their first portable\, easy-to-use\, and comprehensive means of identifying the birds they encountered. This helped contribute to the enjoyment of bird feeding as well as the development of species-specific feeding.

SUMMARY:Art of Tin Punching Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:According to Old Sturbridge Village\, “The tin business in New England began in the mid-1700s but grew most rapidly after 1820. Tinware competed successfully with the more traditional products of redware potters. Tin shop owners purchased tinplated sheet iron imported from England\, shaped it into a variety of forms\, and distributed finished goods wholesale through peddlers and country stores\, and at retail from their shops. Pails\, colanders\, dippers\, dish kettles\, funnels\, measures\, and pans of all kinds were in greatest demand. Lanterns\, footstoves\, teapots\, coffeepots\, tin kitchens\, skimmers\, and sconces were other common utensils produced for house\, farm\, and shop.” \nAt this Wilton Historical Society Art of Tin Punching Workshop for Kids on Saturday\, Jan. 11\, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.\, museum educator Katherine Karlik will talk about tin punching\, and about William and Edward Pattinson\, brothers who settled in Connecticut around 1740 and established the first tin shop in America. The workshop project is making a rectangular placard which can be used as a wall hanging\, featuring a simple dot and dash design. Children will help make their own snack. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child; non-member cost is $15 per child. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \n“The tin lanterns that illuminated front porches and parlors throughout Europe can be traced to at least the early 16th century. By the Colonial era\, tin punching added a bit of variety to the traditional choices of tin lanterns fitted with panes of glass or cow horn. Lanterns with those original types of panes could still be punched\, but tinsmiths might bypass panes altogether if they made enough holes to let sufficient light shine through.” – Colonial Williamsburg website.

SUMMARY:“I Have A Dream” Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Day Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream was to see people of all countries\, races\, and religions living together in harmony. His “I have a Dream” speech was delivered on Aug. 28\, 1963 at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before a crowd of 250\,000. Dr. King made references to our founding fathers and the Bible\, maintaining a positive and uplifting tone. A famous passage includes\, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” His speech was televised and brought favorable exposure to the movement and the landmark passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. \nAt this “I Have a Dream” Workshop for Kids\, museum educator Katherine Karlik will have the kids listen to an excerpt from King’s famous speech\, and talk about his vision and their dreams for a better world. The workshop project is creating a small canvas banner\, personalized with their dreams. The kids will help make their own snack. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child; non-member cost is $15 per child. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nSummers in Connecticut tobacco fields exposed Dr. Martin Luther King to a desegregated world. \n“In the summers of 1944 and 1947\, a freshman from Morehouse College in Atlanta\, GA arrived in Connecticut to begin working in the tobacco fields in Simsbury. On Sundays\, he and other students would go to the First Church of Christ to attend a service. This particular student\, just 15 years old\, was selected to be the religious leader for the group of young men and led meetings at the dorms where topics such as changing the world and contributing to society were discussed. His name was Martin Luther King Jr. “ – excerpted from the website of the Simsbury Free Library\, Simsbury\, CT

Program participants will make something extra nice for their Valentine–delicious\, professional-looking\, molded chocolates and a decorated box to put them in! The cost is $10 for members\, $15 for non-members. \nDid you know? \n“Although 18th-century Americans did not enjoy candy bars or other modern chocolate treats as we know them today\, they did love chocolate. In fact\, George Washington ordered 20 pounds of chocolate from British merchant Thomas Knox in 1757 . . . . as hot chocolate was a favorite breakfast beverage at Mount Vernon. . . . This was the first of many chocolate orders he placed over the course of his life.” — From George Washington’s Mount Vernon website \n“The tradition of giving chocolates on Valentine’s Day can be traced to Richard Cadbury\, of the English chocolate-making family\, who “invented” the first Valentine’s Day candy box during the Victorian era. The Victorians\, who fancied decorating cards with plump cupids shooting arrows of love\, later transferred the image to the lids of heart-shaped boxes filled with dreamy combinations of silken chocolates.” –“For Lovers\, Chocolate\,” The Buffalo News

SUMMARY:Women's Suffrage Centennial in Wilton: Wilton Woman's Club Short Story Contest for Girls
DESCRIPTION:2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing and protecting the right to vote for (some) women. The State of Connecticut has launched the CT Women’s Suffrage Commission and is encouraging municipalities and non profits to work together to celebrate this anniversary.  A number of Wilton organizations have planned events and activities to celebrate this important milestone. \n\nThe Wilton Woman’s Club is holding a short story contest on the theme of the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage. Girls who are Wilton residents in grades 9-12 are encouraged to submit a fictional short story related to American women gaining the right to vote. Deadline is April 27\, 2020. \nThe topic can be anything. Some hypothetical examples: \n\nA story of an 18 year old woman in 1920\nA sci-fi story about a parallel universe where women never got the right to vote\nA mystery about a conspiracy to prevent passage of the amendment\n\nRequirements: \nThe story must be 2\,500 words or less\, typewritten\, in English. It must be related to American women’s right to vote. The story must be original\, and written by the submitter\, who must be a female resident of Wilton\, CT\, currently in grades 9-12. \nThe deadline is 11:59 p.m.\, April 27\, 2020. \nEmail a PDF or Word document by the deadline. Include entrant’s full name\, email\, and home address with the submission. By submitting\, entrants agree to all contest rules. \nPrize: \nThe prize is $250. \nJudging: \nThe judging panel will be members of the Wilton Woman’s Club. \nThe winner will be chosen based on how interesting the story is\, does it relate to women’s suffrage\, and does it have correct spelling and grammar. \nNames will be removed from entries so judging is blind. \nDaughters of WWC club members are eligible but receive no preference. \nThe winner will be announced on June 1\, 2020. \nFor more information\, please visit www.wiltonwomansclub.com.

SUMMARY:Jimu Robotics for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Using this Lego-style kit\, kids entering grades 5 – 6 can build their own robot and learn the basics of drag-and-drop programming to control the robot’s actions in this online four-day workshop. The program is from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m from Monday\, July 20 to Thursday\, July 24. \nAfter learning how to program the robot\, students will use sensors to complete programming exercises such as avoiding crashes\, or detecting items and using servos/motors to collect them. Once the program is over\, students can continue to independently create and explore other designs with their kits. \nStudents will need a device to participate in a Zoom call\, as well as another iOS or Android device with the “Jimu” app installed (preferably a tablet). \nThis class is taught by Wilton High School graduates Rishabh Raniwala and Navod Jayawardhane. \nRegistration required; must be able to attend all four days. Visit the library’s website to register. Students must purchase their own Jimu Robot kit to participate. The direct link will be sent with registration. The Zoom link will be sent the morning of the program. Call for details (203) 762-6336 or email for details.
