SUMMARY:Booked for Lunch: 97 Orchard Street: An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenemant
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a great read\, something engaging and informative? \nCome to “Booked for Lunch\,” A History Reading Group at the Wilton Historical Society discussing 97 Orchard Street: An Edible history of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement by Jane Ziegelman \n“The story…about Old World habits clashing and ultimately melding with new American ones\, is familiar. But Ms. Ziegelman is a patient scholar and a graceful writer\, and she rummages in these families’ histories and larders to smart\, chewy effect.” –Dwight Garner\, The New York Times \nIn 97 Orchard Street\, Ziegelman explores the culinary life that was the heart and soul of New York’s Lower East Side around the turn of the twentieth century–a city within a city\, where Germans\, Irish\, Italians\, and Eastern European Jews attempted to forge a new life. Through the experiences of five families\, all of them residents of 97 Orchard Street (now the Tenement Museum)\, she takes readers on a vivid and unforgettable tour\, from impossibly cramped tenement apartments down dimly lit stairwells where children played and neighbors socialized\, beyond the front stoops where immigrant housewives found respite and company\, and out into the hubbub of the dirty\, teeming streets. Includes 40 recipes. \n“Highly entertaining and deceptively ambitious\, the book resurrects the juicy details of breakfast\, lunch and dinner (recipes included) consumed by poor and working-class New Yorkers a century and more ago. It could well have been subtitled “How the Other Half Ate”…Ziegelman adroitly works her way through the decades and her five cuisines. Along the way\, there are fascinating diversions.” —The New York Times Book Review \n“Social history is\, most elementally\, food history. Jane Ziegelman had the great idea to zero in on one Lower East Side tenement building\, and through it she has crafted a unique and aromatic narrative of New York’s immigrant culture: with bread in the oven\, steam rising from pots\, and the family gathering round.” — Russell Shorto\, author of The Island at the Center of the World \nParticipants bring a brown bag lunch\, the Society provides a beverage and dessert. There is no charge\, but please register by email or by calling 203.762.7257.

SUMMARY:Wilton’s Architecture: An Update to the Historic House Survey
DESCRIPTION:An illustrated talk by architectural historians Stacey Vairo and Lucas Karmazinas\nAll are welcome! Reception to follow. \nOn Thursday\, Sept. 27 from 7-8:30 p.m. the public is cordially invited to an illustrated talk given by architectural historians Stacey Vairo of Scheller Preservation Associates and Lucas Karmazinas of FuturePast Preservation at the Wilton Historical Society. The pair has conducted a historic house survey primarily focused on buildings dating from 1920-1940 in Wilton\, of which there are over 400. In all\, about 160 structures have been added to Wilton’s Historic Resource Inventory. \nThe presentation will include information about how the survey was conducted and used\, interesting finds\, areas that would be appropriate to be studied for historic district designation and much more. The project has been funded by a Survey and Planning grant of $30\,000 from Connecticut’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) which was awarded to the Society in late 2016. At the lecture\, owners of any buildings that appear on the lists will be able to pick up a copy of their home’s history. \nPlease register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nVairo and Karmazinas conducted the survey using a combination of research and a “windshield survey\,” meaning they literally drove around Wilton looking at structures from the road or right of way (inventory surveys do not require access to the interior or rear of the structure)\, taking photos as they documented. Some of the styles of the period include Colonial Revival\, craftsman/bungalow\, Spanish Eclectic\, and Tudor revival\, plus the distinctive stone houses designed by Westport architect Frazier Peters\, and the stately homes of Wilton’s Nelson Breed. They consulted old maps\, researched within the town’s land records\, genealogy records\, the Society’s archives\, and other resources including the History Room at the Wilton Library. Discussions with Carol Russell\, town historian\, and Bob Russell\, author of the definitive history of Wilton\, and Society co-director/chair of the Historic District Commission Allison Gray Sanders\, and local architect Rob Sanders were also helpful.

SUMMARY:Wilton Election 2018 State Legislative Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:This November is Election 2018\, and the local legislative campaigns will impact Wilton just as much as national ones. To help Wilton residents be as informed and prepared as possible to head into voting booths and cast their votes\, GOOD Morning Wilton is teaming up with the Wilton League of Women Voters (LWV) and the Wilton Library to co-sponsor a CT State Legislative Candidate Forum for the State Senate District 26\, and the State House Districts 125 and 143. \nThe forum will bring together on one stage the candidates in each of the races for those districts:  candidates for Senate District 26–Toni Boucher (R) and Will Haskell (D); candidates for House District 125–Tom O’Dea (R) andRoss Tartell (D); and candidates for House District 143–Gail Lavielle (R) and Stephanie Thomas (D). All six candidates have confirmed that they plan to attend and participate in the forum. \nThe forum is scheduled for Tuesday\, Oct. 16\, 2018\, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Middlebrook Middle School auditorium. The event was originally planned to take place at the Wilton Library\, but organizers changed the location when interest in attending outgrew capacity for the library’s Brubeck Room. \n\nFor anyone who cannot attend to watch in person\, GOOD Morning Wilton has arranged to livestream the forum online. Candidates will be held to strict time limits for each answer and opportunity to speak.\n\n\n\n\nAudience members at the event will be able to submit written questions; all questions will be screened for legibility\, duplication\, and may be combined or condensed. \nJean Rabinow\, a member of the Steering Committee of the League of Women Voters of the Bridgeport Area\, and Director/Outreach for the League of Women Voters of Connecticut\, will moderate the evening’s event. \nIn addition to the event co-sponsors–Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and GOOD Morning Wilton–other partners in the event include the Norwalk League of Women Voters and student partners from theWilton High School Model Congress.

SUMMARY:New Perspectives Documentary Series Presents: "Poliwood"
DESCRIPTION:Terrific and timely gem of a documentary by Oscar-winning director (and New Canaan/Wilton resident!) that is fair to people on both sides of the political aisle. This thought-provoking film couldn’t come at a better time given the spirit of divisiveness that is infecting our country. \nLevinson documents the 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions and looks at the way Hollywood celebrity and political activism have become entwined. Actors Anne Hathaway\, Susan Sarandon and Sting\, among others\, are a part of the Creative Coalition\, a non-partisan group of actors and artists that promote the importance of the arts in education as they reached across party lines to make their case at both the Democratic and Republican conventions. \nWATCH THE TRAILER: \n\nThe screening is Saturday\, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wilton Library Brubeck Room. Register online or call 203.762.6334. \nThe New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker Megan Smith-Harris. Please join her for a lively Q&A following the screening. Refreshments provided. No charge: suggested donation is $5. Registration is highly recommended.
