SUMMARY:Wilton Election 2018 State Legislative Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:This November is Election 2018\, and the local legislative campaigns will impact Wilton just as much as national ones. To help Wilton residents be as informed and prepared as possible to head into voting booths and cast their votes\, GOOD Morning Wilton is teaming up with the Wilton League of Women Voters (LWV) and the Wilton Library to co-sponsor a CT State Legislative Candidate Forum for the State Senate District 26\, and the State House Districts 125 and 143. \nThe forum will bring together on one stage the candidates in each of the races for those districts:  candidates for Senate District 26–Toni Boucher (R) and Will Haskell (D); candidates for House District 125–Tom O’Dea (R) andRoss Tartell (D); and candidates for House District 143–Gail Lavielle (R) and Stephanie Thomas (D). All six candidates have confirmed that they plan to attend and participate in the forum. \nThe forum is scheduled for Tuesday\, Oct. 16\, 2018\, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Middlebrook Middle School auditorium. The event was originally planned to take place at the Wilton Library\, but organizers changed the location when interest in attending outgrew capacity for the library’s Brubeck Room. \n\nFor anyone who cannot attend to watch in person\, GOOD Morning Wilton has arranged to livestream the forum online. It can be viewed live\, in real time via the link at www.livecloudtv.com/2018WiltonCTElectionForum. The event also will be recorded for re-broadcast on GOODMorningWilton.com and government access as available.\n\n\nThe candidates will engage in a modified\, town hall-style format. The format allows all candidates equal time to introduce themselves\, answer all questions posed by the moderator\, and highlight their goals for serving the community. Candidates will be held to strict time limits for each answer and opportunity to speak.\n\n\n\n\nAudience members at the event will be able to submit written questions; all questions will be screened for legibility\, duplication\, and may be combined or condensed. \nJean Rabinow\, a member of the Steering Committee of the League of Women Voters of the Bridgeport Area\, and Director/Outreach for the League of Women Voters of Connecticut\, will moderate the evening’s event. \nIn addition to the event co-sponsors–Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and GOOD Morning Wilton–other partners in the event include the Norwalk League of Women Voters and student partners from theWilton High School Model Congress.

DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, Oct. 23\, Lt. David Hartman\, Officer Diane MacLean and Officer Jonathan Patry will give a talk on “Scam Prevention” at the Senior Center. They will teach the audience how to recognize a scam and what to do if you’re a victim. Participants will see actual scam letters that were mailed to Wilton residents. The Wilton Police Department will have handouts available with information where victims can file formal complaints if they have been scammed.

DESCRIPTION:Get Well\, Stay Well:  A health literacy series presented by Wilton Library and Western Connecticut Health Network presents an update on stroke risk\, prevention\, symptoms\, and treatment. \nThe featured speaker will be Dr. Joshua Marcus\, MD\, a neurosurgeon who focuses on the minimally invasive treatment of brain and spine conditions including hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. Marcus will talk about what a stroke is\, who is at risk for stroke\, how to reduce your risk of stroke\, the signs and symptoms of a stroke\, and perhaps most importantly what to do if you think you are experiencing a stroke. He will also discuss the latest minimally invasive treatment for stroke. \nThe program and following Q&A session will be moderated by Wilton Library trustee Saras Nair\, MD\, who was previously chairman of the Pathology Department at Norwalk Hospital. \nMarcus graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Binghamton University\, attended NYU’s School of Medicine\, and completed his residency at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical College. The meeting is free and open to all League members and the general public. The program begins with a short business meeting\, with light refreshments\, followed by the students’ talk. \nFollowing the mass shooting in Parkland Florida\, Segall was a featured speaker at two major events in CT—the March for Our Lives at the State Capitol and The Road to Change Tour in Newtown this past summer. The marches attracted thousands of participants\, including survivors of the Parkland shooting. Bracken was the 2018 WHS winner of the League of Women Voters Edna Jones Memorial Book Award and is a board member of CT Teens Against Gun Violence. Join us at our next parent education workshop to learn how digital tools are enhancing learning for every student and get tips on how you can help your child on their educational journey. \nFran Kompar\, director of digital learning and members of the Learning Commons staff throughout the district will present a workshop for parents entitled\, Access for All Learners using Digital Resources. The sessions will be held in the Middlebrook Library Learning Commons and offered at 9:30-11 a.m. and at 7-8:30 p.m.. \nThe workshop will be hands-on. Parents should bring a device\, if available. The topic\, Access for All Learners will explore ways that specific digital tools and resources help eliminate barriers and enhance learning experiences for all students. Digital Resources that are available as part of the district digital toolset will be presented. Please note that there will be ways for parents to learn strategies to help their child\, no matter the age. \nThe workshop\, as with our Ready-Access Program Philosophy\, is about how digital learning enhances learning. Specifically\, this session will explore ways to: \n\nProvide students better access to text through various modalities–Extensions that allow text-to-speech\, de-cluttering of a webpage or YouTube educational video\, highlight and annotate.
