Join us at our next parent education workshop to learn how digital tools are enhancing learning for every student and get tips on how you can help your child on their educational journey. \nFran Kompar\, director of digital learning and members of the Learning Commons staff throughout the district will present a workshop for parents entitled\, Access for All Learners using Digital Resources. The sessions will be held in the Middlebrook Library Learning Commons and offered at 9:30-11 a.m. and at 7-8:30 p.m.. \nThe workshop will be hands-on. Parents should bring a device\, if available. The topic\, Access for All Learners will explore ways that specific digital tools and resources help eliminate barriers and enhance learning experiences for all students. Digital Resources that are available as part of the district digital toolset will be presented. Please note that there will be ways for parents to learn strategies to help their child\, no matter the age. \nThe workshop\, as with our Ready-Access Program Philosophy\, is about how digital learning enhances learning. DESCRIPTION:WLA/WHS – Scholarly Series – Sex\, Scandal\, and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed? – Mark Albertson\, 4 – 5:30 p.m. Topic: Versailles….False Promise – Mark Albertson \nIn the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series theme will be ‘Sex\, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed?’ Historian and author Mark Albertson kicks off the series with a lecture highlighting several themes from his 8-week course on the transition period between World War One and Two beginning with the Versailles Treaty. \nAlbertson is the historical research editor at Army Aviation magazine in Monroe; and is the historian for the Army Aviation Association of America. He has authored several books:  USS Connecticut: Constitution State Battleship; They’ll Have to Follow You!; The Triumph of the Great White Fleet; and On History:  A Treatise. SUMMARY:The Scoop on Psych Testing:  What do All Those Numbers Really Mean?
DESCRIPTION:Licensed clinical psychologist Caley Schwartz\, PhD will present an overview of common areas examined in psychological and psycho-educational testing\, including IQ\, achievement\, memory\, executive functioning\, social communication\, and development. She will discuss the significance of psych testing\, what information can be gained from it\, how to interpret the numbers you see in the reports\, and how important comprehensive recommendations based on the conclusions of the testing are for appropriate interventions and support services. \nDr. Schwartz earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Miami and completed a two-year Fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center\, where she received generalist and autism-specific training. Upon completion of her postdoctoral training\, Dr. Schwartz became a faculty member within the Autism Program at the Yale Child Study Center. In addition\, she completed a certification in Clinical Issues in Adoption\, developed jointly by the CT Department of Children and Families\, the UCONN School of Social Work\, and Southern CT State University. Currently\, Dr. Schwartz is a Clinical Instructor at the Yale Child Study Center. \nIn her Ridgefield\, CT\, private practice\, Schwartz provides comprehensive psycho-educational and psychological evaluations\, as well as diagnostic evaluations requested by both parents and school systems. \nThe presentation is at 10 a.m.-noon at Comstock Community Center (180 School Rd.\, Wilton). SUMMARY:WLA/WHS Scholarly Series – Sex\, Scandal\, and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed? with Cecelia Bucki
DESCRIPTION:In the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series theme is ‘Sex\, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919–What’s Changed?’ \nHistorian and author Cecelia Bucki\, Ph.D.\, will survey the domestic unrest that plagued the United States following the end of World War One. The Treaty of Versailles signaled the end of World War One but on the home front\, conflict continued. The Great War and its aftermath resulted in domestic repercussions such as general strikes\, labor unrest\, race riots\, and Palmer raids. Nationally and here in Connecticut\, peace remained elusive. This part of 1919 remains an untold part of 20th century U.S. history. \nBucki has taught American history at Fairfield University for more than 25 years. Her specialties within U.S. History are social\, labor and working-class\, and immigration history. She is the author of the award-winning Bridgeport’s Socialist New Deal\, 1915-1936 (University of Illinois Press\, 2001). From 2011-2017\, she was editor-in-chief of the journal Connecticut History Review. \nSee the library’s registration link for details. \nThe lecture is sponsored by Lila and Buck Griswold; Max Gabrielson is the moderator. DESCRIPTION:Author Susan Conley brings a heartfelt story of a woman’s identity crisis in her latest novel\, Elsey Come Home. \nElsey\, the protagonist\, is desperately trying to balance motherhood\, a career as a painter\, her role as a wife and a drinking problem she developed to help with her worries. Her husband gives her an ultimatum which sets Elsey on her personal journey. \nConley is the author of the novel Paris Was the Place and The Foremost Good Fortune\, a book that won the Maine Literary Award for memoir. Born and raised in Maine\, her writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine and The Paris Review. She has been awarded fellowships from the MacDowell Colony\, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, the Maine Arts Commission\, and the Massachusetts Arts Council. She spent three years in Beijing with her husband and two sons before moving back to Portland\, Maine\, where she currently lives. She teaches in the Stonecoast Writing Program at the University of Southern Maine. \nA Q&A will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend\, but registration highly recommended. Wilson was awarded “Best Playwright” in 2016 by the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival for the piece. At the end of the presentation\, Wilson will conduct a “talk-back” session. \nRooted in research\, A Journey is a tour-de-force of acting and song\, as the statuesque Wilson modulates her powerful contralto from a whisper to a fervent spiritual\, capturing the spirits of Harriet Tubman\, Sojourner Truth\, Rosa Parks\, Maya Angelou\, two invented characters she calls the ‘Slave Woman’ and ‘African Queen\,’ and a new historical figure\, Haggar Tonquin of Wilton. Wilson skillfully tells of the struggles and influence of Black womanhood as an integral part of the history of the United States. \nA reception will follow the talk.
