SUMMARY:Booked for Lunch: Sisters In Law–How Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsberg Went to the Supreme Court and Changed the World
DESCRIPTION:Come to a Wilton Historical Society-hosted reading group that focuses on books with a historical bent. The new selection is Sisters in Law:  How Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsberg Went to the Supreme Court and Changed the World by Linda Hirshman\, a New York Times bestseller. \nThe relationship between Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg—Republican and Democrat\, Christian and Jew\, western rancher’s daughter and Brooklyn girl—transcends party\, religion\, region\, and culture. Strengthened by each other’s presence\, these groundbreaking judges\, the first and second women to serve on the highest court in the land\, have transformed the Constitution and America itself\, making it a more equal place for all women. \nHirshman’s dual biography includes revealing stories of how these trailblazers fought for recognition in a male-dominated profession—battles that would ultimately benefit every American woman. Hirshman also makes clear how these two justices have shaped the legal framework of modern feminism\, setting precedent in cases dealing with employment discrimination\, abortion\, affirmative action\, sexual harassment\, and many other issues crucial to women’s lives. \nSisters in Law combines legal detail with warm personal anecdotes\, bringing these very different women into focus as never before. Meticulously researched and compellingly told\, it is an authoritative account of our changing law and culture\, and a moving story of a remarkable friendship. \n“Vital…Part of what makes Hirshman such a likable writer — in addition to her wit and ability to explain the law succinctly without dumbing it down — is her optimism.” – Washington Post \nParticipants bring a brown bag lunch\, the Historical Society provides a beverage and dessert. There is no charge\, but participants are asked to please register\, by email or call 203.762.7257.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jacqueline Raposo – The Me Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness
DESCRIPTION:Wiltonian and journalist Jacqueline Raposo finds herself sick\, single\, broke\, and wandering in a fog. Fighting chronic illness\, debt and other low points in her life she embarks on subtracting some of her most constant habits from her life – social media\, shopping\, sugar\, and negative thoughts – for periods of 30 to 90 days over the course of one year. \nIn this intimately curated search for self-improvement (a quest that readers can easily personalize for themselves)\, Raposo confesses to the sometimes violent and profound shifts in her social interactions\, physical health\, and sense of self-worth. Part memoir\, part case study\, this book offers the reader an inspiring example of how to forge one’s own journey\, expose wounds\, and help personal healing. \nRaposo is an expert interviewer and writes regularly for Food & Wine\, Saveur\, and Cosmopolitan\, and is the producer and co-host of “Love Bites Radio\,” and connects chronic illness/disability advocates with protest events as the co-founder of #MarchingWithMe. \nSee library’s registration link for more details. Q&A will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend\, but registration is highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Book signing and purchase available courtesy of Elm Street Books\, New Canaan. Media Sponsor:  GOOD Morning Wilton.

SUMMARY:Information Session on the Looney Bill (Senate Bill 454) that would consolidate Wilton & Norwalk School Districts
DESCRIPTION:We strongly oppose the Bill proposed by the Democrats’ Senate Leader that would consolidate the Wilton School District with the Norwalk School District. \nThe proposal (Senate Bill 454) of State Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney (D-New Haven) would seriously jeopardize Wilton’s reputation for high quality\, locally controlled education. Other serious consequences for Wilton\, known and unknown\, would no doubt follow. \nThe RTC is inviting the public to an information session on the Looney Bill on Thursday\, Jan. 31\, at 7 p.m. at Trackside Teen Center. All are welcome and families with students in Wilton schools are strongly encouraged to attend. The purpose of the meeting is to facilitate responses to the Bill by all Wilton residents and give each the opportunity to be heard in Hartford as the Bill is debated. \nContact: Bill Lalor / Chair\, Wilton RTC / WiltonCTGOP@gmail.com

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING: Beyond Measure: What Counts Can’t Be Counted
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Youth Council and Wilton Youth Services invite Wilton residents to a special three-part series to explore the purpose of education\, the importance of childhood and our community’s opportunity to chart the best course for our children. \nThe series began in November with a screening of Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture. It continues on Monday\, Feb. 4 with a screening of the follow-up movie\, Beyond Measure. We conclude with a Community Conversation on Monday\, Feb. 25. \nEvery day we hear stories about America’s troubled education system\, and that in order to fix what’s broken\, we need to narrow curricula\, standardize classrooms\, and find new ways to measure students and teachers. But what if these “fixes” are making our schools worse? Beyond Measure offers a positive picture of what’s possible in American education when communities decide they are ready for change. \nJoin us for 80-minute film followed by a brief panel discussion. This is a free event\, open to adults and students from middle school up. \nThe documentary film Beyond Measure visits public schools across the country that put research and innovative models into practice. These groundbreaking communities are transforming what and how they teach\, and creating more equitable\, empowering and student-centered cultures from the ground up. \nFrom the makers of Race to Nowhere\, Beyond Measure and the companion book of the same name offer a positive picture of what’s possible in American education when communities decide they are ready for change. \nThere are two opportunities to participate–a morning screening and an evening screening! Both screenings will be held at Middlebrook School Auditorium. Register here: \n10 a.m. Screening \n7 p.m. Screening \nSponsored by Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services. \n

SUMMARY:WLA/WHS Scholarly Series – Sex\, Scandal\, and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed? with Cecelia Bucki
DESCRIPTION:In the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series theme is ‘Sex\, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919–What’s Changed?’ \nHistorian and author Cecelia Bucki\, Ph.D.\, will survey the domestic unrest that plagued the United States following the end of World War One. The Treaty of Versailles signaled the end of World War One but on the home front\, conflict continued. The Great War and its aftermath resulted in domestic repercussions such as general strikes\, labor unrest\, race riots\, and Palmer raids. Nationally and here in Connecticut\, peace remained elusive. This part of 1919 remains an untold part of 20th century U.S. history. \nBucki has taught American history at Fairfield University for more than 25 years. Her specialties within U.S. History are social\, labor and working-class\, and immigration history. She is the author of the award-winning Bridgeport’s Socialist New Deal\, 1915-1936 (University of Illinois Press\, 2001). From 2011-2017\, she was editor-in-chief of the journal Connecticut History Review. \nSee the library’s registration link for details. \nThe lecture is sponsored by Lila and Buck Griswold; Max Gabrielson is the moderator. The remaining lectures are as follows (please note the location of each lecture): \n\nMarch 10 at the Wilton Historical Society:  “Men in Black Sox\,” with Steve Wulf\, ESPN\nMarch 31 at the Wilton Historical Society:  “Votes for Women” with Pam Dougherty\, Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.\n\nReception follows the talk. There is no charge but donations are always welcomed. Registration is required. Please register for each lecture individually.

SUMMARY:"A Journey...." One-Woman Show by Kimberly Wilson
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of March as Women’s History Month\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society present A Journey . . .\, a one-woman show by Westport writer and actress Kimberly Wilson. Wilson was awarded “Best Playwright” in 2016 by the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival for the piece. At the end of the presentation\, Wilson will conduct a “talk-back” session. \nRooted in research\, A Journey is a tour-de-force of acting and song\, as the statuesque Wilson modulates her powerful contralto from a whisper to a fervent spiritual\, capturing the spirits of Harriet Tubman\, Sojourner Truth\, Rosa Parks\, Maya Angelou\, two invented characters she calls the ‘Slave Woman’ and ‘African Queen\,’ and a new historical figure\, Haggar Tonquin of Wilton. Wilson skillfully tells of the struggles and influence of Black womanhood as an integral part of the history of the United States. \nA reception will follow the talk. No charge but donations are always welcomed. See the library’s registration link for more details. Registration is highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334.

See the library’s registration link for details. The lecture is sponsored by MaryGail and Jerry Gristina; Steve Hudspeth  is the moderator. \nThe final lecture is Sunday\, March 31 at the Wilton Historical Society – “Votes for Women” – with Pam Dougherty of the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame. \nReception will follow the talk. It is an indispensable guide to doing things the Martha way with hundreds of projects and advice that capture her incomparable taste and guidance. The manual is designed for all readers\, regardless of age or stage of life. There is something useful within the pages whether newlyweds\, homeowners or first-time apartment renters\, recent college grads\, empty nesters\, freelancers working from home\, parents – and even pet parents.
