SUMMARY:Wilton High School St. Baldrick's Fundraising Event
DESCRIPTION:On March 16\, 2020\, we will be hosting our 12th St. Baldrick’s Foundation shaving event in the Wilton High School cafeteria. (Snow date is March 19). Registration at the event will begin at 6:30 p.m.. We are asking our Wilton High School students to join our team along with Mr. Liptack (a Knight!) and Mr. Pompa\, (our own Commander of The Knights of the Bald Table!) by registering online by Feb. 21\, 2020. You can also donate at any time on the same site\, or simply come watch us that night. \nIt’s our annual fundraiser to fight childhood cancer by funding pediatric cancer research. In these challenging times\, cancer does not stop–and your efforts go even further. Many thanks in advance for considering to help us with this cause. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises awareness and funds to fight childhood cancer. While battling cancer\, children may not lose only their hair but also years of their childhood\, and sometimes their lives. Participants in a St. Baldrick’s event shave their heads in exchange for donations towards research. It’s a simple concept\, a fun time and a very effective fundraiser. Since its founding in 2000 by three men\, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has raised well over $50 million with head shavings in 18 countries and shaved over 390\,000 heads. \nOur team is comprised of Wilton High School students and staff which started under the student leadership of Reed Dempsey for an area child diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma at age 2½ who is now cancer free. For our first two years we participated with the Fairfield based TeamBrent\, but eventually members of our school created a Wilton High School offshoot in 2009. \nLast year as a whole\, Wilton High School raised over $24\,000. This year\, our team (pictured below) is looking to exceed that amount. As we are nearing our date\, our team is looking for additional students to part take in the event. Please consider encouraging your Wilton students to participate or making a donation to our event this year. \nPictured:  (Front Row) Dominick Polito\, Connor Burke (lead organizer)\, Elijah Ackerman\, and Evan Charney; (Back Row) Christian Theoharides\, Jake Farnworth\, Ben Leung\, Will Gioffre\, and Scott Verrilli

SUMMARY:Fall Walk-A-Thon at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Academy
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, Nov. 8\, at 12:45 p.m.\, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Academy will hold its Fall Walk-A-Thon. This is one of the school’s major fundraising events of the year\, but it will also benefit the community–10% of all funds raised in the walk-a-thon will be donated to local area food banks (Norwalk and Wilton). \nStudents and faculty will walk a designated route on the school and adjacent church property. Each grade will choose a canonized saint to remember and honor in their walk. “The saints will be our inspiration for the walk\,” said school principal Stanley Steele. “The walk-a-thon is a perfect opportunity for our students to see what ‘service above self’ really means. We work hard to instill the notion of giving back to the community and helping those in need\, as the saints did. And we’ll have a little fun in the process\, too.” \nIn addition to working on class projects to showcase their spirit and support for the event\, students have garnered pledges of support from family\, friends and neighbors. Businesses and individuals interested in supporting walk-a-thon participants are also welcome to make donations and may contact the school. The deadline for walk-a-thon donations is Nov. 8\, 2019. \nThe Fall Walk-A-Thon will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Academy\, 225 Danbury Rd.\, Wilton.

SUMMARY:Wi-ACT Rise Against Hunger Volunteer Meal-Packaging Event
DESCRIPTION:Each year members of the Wilton community come together to participate in one of the most gratifying\, heartfelt volunteer efforts\, the Wilton Interfaith Action Committee‘s (WI-ACT) Rise Against Hunger Meal-Packaging Event. \nThis year’s meal packaging falls on Saturday\, Oct. 19\, when 700 Wilton volunteers will come together to work across four\, two-hour shifts over the course of a very full day\, to make a difference in the lives of children living in food insecurity around the world. \nIn full\, over the seven previous years of this event\, Wilton has packaged more than 1\,000\,000 meals\, each one providing a highly nutritious meal in a compact package. What’s more\, the program nourishes children in mind as well as body\, as recipient children are fed in educational settings\, helping contribute toward breaking the cycle of poverty and malnutrition. \nWilton Rise Against Hunger volunteers also help meet food sufficiency needs here locally as well\, by bringing non-perishable food items to the event for local food pantries. \nFor this year’s event\, Wi-ACT has set the same goal as last year of 150\,000 meals to be packaged in one day\, but financing for the bulk ingredients to meet that goal has become a bigger challenge this year. WI-ACT pays for the meal components in advance from the organizer\, highly rated nonprofit Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. at a cost of 31 cents per meal. That’s a bargain for these highly nutritious meals that feed over 400 children (at the 150\,000-meal level) for every day of an entire year but that price is an increase of two cents per meal over previous years and presents a major part of the financial challenge of again reaching the 150\,000-meal level\, to the total of $3\,000. \nA new feature of this year’s event will be a 40-ft. ocean-going container on site at the WEPCO Church Complex (36 New Canaan Rd.) where the meal-packaging is done. Some meals will already be pre-loaded from other events\, but the majority of the meals it will contain are to be from this Wilton event. Once the Wilton event ends and all of the meals packaged that day in Wilton have been loaded\, the container will be sealed and immediately driven dockside to be loaded on a ship and delivered\, most likely to Somalia. \nAnyone who would like to volunteer for meal-packaging is welcome to participate. Individuals and families (with members as young as 7-years-old who take on the very important “runner” responsibility\, up to senior citizens) can join in the work to make it an uplifting and exciting full-family experience! Interested participants can sign up for a shift online. \nOrganizers are asking for community members to consider donating to help pay for the bulk ingredients so that Wi-ACT can hit the goal of 150\,000 meals. All funds raised go to pay for those bulk ingredients. Donations can be by check made payable to “Rise Against Hunger\, Inc.” noting “Wilton CT event” on the memo line\, and should be mailed to 6 Glen Hill Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or donated directly to Rise Against Hunger for this Wilton event at a Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. website dedicated for the Wilton event.

SUMMARY:Wilton HazWaste Collection Event
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s Annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, Oct. 12\, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Miller-Driscoll School Parking Lot (217 Wolfpit Rd.). This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. Household hazardous waste collection programs provide an opportunity to manage these wastes in an environmentally safe manner. \nCommon household products that should not end up in our household trash and will be accepted at the event include: \nAerosol Cans (not empty)\nAntifreeze\nArts/Craft Supplies\nAsphalt/Roof Sealer\nBathroom Cleaners\nBrake Fluid\nChemical Fertilizers\nChemistry Kits\nDegreasers\nDisinfectants\nDrain Cleaners\nFire Extinguishers\nFlea Powders/Sprays\nFloor Care Products\nFungicides\nFurniture/Car Polish\nGasoline\nHair Dyes & Sprays\nHerbicides\nHousehold Batteries\nInsecticides/Pesticides\nKerosene\nMetal Polish\nMoth Balls\nNail Polish/Remover\nOven Cleaners\nPaint Strippers/Thinners\nPhoto Chemicals\nPool Chemicals\nRodent Poison\nSolvents\nTile/Toilet Cleaners\nTransmission Fluid \nThis event is for the collection of household hazardous waste only. Paint and electronics will not be accepted. \nThe collection is open to all Wilton residents\, as well as residents of Norwalk\, Darien\, Greenwich\, Stamford\, Weston and Westport. Proof of residency (a driver’s license) is required. For more information\, contact the Wilton Department of Environmental Affairs at 203.563.0180.
