SUMMARY:Anne Gardiner Perkins Author Talk–"Yale Needs Women:  How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant"
DESCRIPTION:The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Yale University first admitting women students. In the summer of 1969\, young women across the country sent in applications to Yale University for the first time. The Ivy League institution dedicated to graduating ‘1\,000 male leaders’ each year had finally decided to open its doors to the nation’s top female students. \nThe landmark decision was a huge step forward for women’s equality in education. However\, this first class of women found themselves immersed in an overwhelmingly male culture they were unprepared to face. Yale Needs Women\, an unflinching account of a group of young women striving for change\, is an inspiring story of strength\, resilience\, and courage that continues to resonate today. \nAnne Gardiner Perkins attended Yale University\, where she earned her BA in history and was the first woman editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. She is also a Rhodes Scholar and completed a BA in modern history at Balliol College\, Oxford University. She has spent her life in education\, from urban high school teacher to state-level policy maker. She received her Ph.D. in higher education at UMass Boston and has presented papers on higher education at leading conferences. A Q&A will follow the talk. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

SUMMARY:“In Search of the Old Leatherman”–A Talk by Nicholas Bellantoni
DESCRIPTION:From 1860-1889\, an unofficial Wilton resident\, the mysterious and silent “Old Leatherman\,” would pass through town every 34 days on his regular route from east to west\, sleeping in caves and eating food that local residents set out for him. Dr. Nicholas Bellantoni\, emeritus state archaeologist\, will present an illustrated talk\, “In Search of the Old Leatherman\,” in which he will discuss the history of this unique individual\, describe some of the caves he occupied and the archaeology done at a few of them\, and will touch on the time he spent in Wilton. \nAccording to Bob Russell’s book\, Wilton\, Connecticut:  Three Centuries of People Places\, and Progress\, two of the Leatherman’s regular food stops were the Nathan (later John) Comstock house at 77 Ridgefield Rd.\, and the Dick Moriarity house in the Huckleberry Hill area\, not far from Rock Lake Reservoir where he had a cave. Bellantoni will also discuss his search for the Old Leatherman’s unmarked grave in Sparta Cemetery\, in Ossining\, NY. The event includes questions and answers\, and a reception. \nThe talk is free for members\, $10 for non-members. Please register by calling 203.762.7257 or via email. \nBellantoni serves as the emeritus state archaeologist with the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History and Archaeology Center at the University of Connecticut. He received his doctorate in anthropology from UConn in 1987 and was shortly thereafter appointed state archaeologist. He also serves as an Adjunct Associate Research Professor in the Department of Anthropology at University of Connecticut\, and is a former president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut and the National Association of State Archeologists. He has recently published a book\, The Long Journeys Home: The Repatriations of Henry Opukahaia and Albert Afraid of Hawk.

DESCRIPTION:Abilis\, the non-profit organization that provides services and support to more than 700 individuals with special needs and their families\, is hosting a free LEAP Transition Information Session in Wilton on Thursday\, Oct. 10\, from 5:30-7 p.m.. The Wilton session will be held at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church (36 New Canaan Rd.). The event is free and open to the public; registration is required and available online. \nThe information session is for families to participate in an interactive discussion about Transition Programming for Young Adults with Special Needs. The goal of the Abilis community-based program is to help young adults become more independent\, obtain meaningful jobs\, and participate in community activities. Representatives from Abilis will provide an overview about the Abilis LEAP Transition Program\, discuss the initial steps required to determine the potential programs and services a family member might consider\, and review the vocational skills\, life skills\, cognitive social development\, and community involvement that needs to be considered when living as an independent adult. DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, Wilton Teen PeaceWorks and Wilton Library are co-hosting “Is Your Daughter Safe? The Her-Self Awareness Lecture” about safety for young women\, and featuring the mother of a teen girl murdered in CT. \nDonna Cimarelli\, CEO and co-founder of the Maren Sanchez Foundation\, is the mother of Maren Sanchez\, a Milford\, CT teenager who died after being stabbed by an obsessed classmate in 2014. \nThis presentation\, “Her-Self Awareness Lecture” trains young people on how to use situational awareness to identify pre-incident indicators that can result in dangerous situations. The presentation also provides strategies on how to be an informed and active bystander to thwart what could potentially be a dangerous situation. The goal is to teach young women and girls how to trust and follow their instincts and pay attention to that gut feeling. \n The lecture on Thursday\, Oct. 10\, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wilton Library\, is for teens\, parents\, grandparents and other members of the community to have the opportunity to hear Cimarelli’s story and benefit from her wisdom. Delicious and historic Election Day Cake will be served. \nSuggested for ages 8 and up. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child per family; for non-members is $15 per family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \n“Unlike today\, in the 18th and 19th centuries\, Election Day met with great celebration. Voters came to major cities like Hartford to cast their ballots and then stayed to socialize and celebrate their democratic freedoms. Often\, city residents hosted elaborate banquets where the dessert course consisted of coffee\, hot cider\, and a generous portion of Election Cake. \n“Election Cake is a cross between bread and cake. Full of fruits and nuts\, this rich dessert became a staple of Election Day celebrations. While there are numerous variations to the recipe\, one submitted by a Mrs. Charles Flagg of Hartford in 1890 included butter\, sugar\, flour\, eggs\, baking powder\, raisins\, currants\, citron\, almonds\, vanilla\, and milk. \n“Although the cake began its association with the city of Hartford in the 1830s\, Connecticut recipes for it date back to 1771. Back then\, colonists might consume Election Cake during daylong town meetings or as a reward for their service after a long day of voting. Sometimes political party advocates handed out Election Cake to those who voted a straight ticket (voting for the same political party for every office). \n“In the early 19th century\, as the parades and balls held in Hartford became more elaborate\, Connecticut residents began identifying Election Day with the city of Hartford and the celebrations there became one of the great festivals in the state. As a result\, Election Cake soon established itself as a Hartford tradition. \n“The popularity of Election Cake got a real boost from its publication in a reprint of Amelia Simmons’s recipe book\, American Cookery\, in 1800. At a time when women faced little opportunity to display their political loyalty\, individuals like Amelia Simmons made food not only social but patriotic as well. Her recipe for Election Cake called for 30 quarts of flour\, 10 pounds of butter\, 14 pounds of sugar\, 12 pounds of raisins\, and three dozen eggs—an indication of the many mouths it was meant to feed. \n“Election Cake became the first food strongly associated with American politics. What made it more unique and important was the way it provided women with an opportunity to express their commitment to their new country. This was no trivial outlet in an era that prohibited women from voting. SUMMARY:Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids:  Exploring Colonial Apple History\, Making Applesauce Cake
DESCRIPTION:According to The American Table\, “With the exception of the wild sour crab apple\, apples are not indigenous to North America. Seeds were brought to the colonies by the Puritans in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. One of the few comfort foods reminiscent of home\, apples quickly grew in popularity\, growing orchards from seed rather than grafting. In growing from seed\, the burgeoning colonies created hundreds of unique varieties within a relatively short period of time.” \nWilton Historical Society museum educator Katherine Karlik will be talking about apples\, applesauce\, cider\, and other interesting details about the importance of the common apple\, Malus domestica\, which is a member of the rose family. Applesauce Cake is the recipe of the day. The fad for this moist cake began during rationing in World War I and its popularity peaked in World War II. \nThe Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids workshop at the Wilton Historical Society teaches kids a “reciept” (recipe) used in the Connecticut region. While the food is prepared\, they hear about Colonial manners\, morals and way of life. The monthly workshops feature relatively simple dishes made with local\, seasonal ingredients\, adapted for modern kitchens. All participants will sample their own cooking and take home recipe cards–as well as any leftovers! The children will learn how a Colonial kitchen would have operated\, in order to appreciate the modern conveniences we take for granted. Previous sessions have made bannock cakes\, pease porridge\, pickles\, an amulet of green peas\, apple tansey\, fairy butter\, pumpkin bread\, cranberry shortbread\, New Year’s “cakes\,” New England chowder\, hand pies\, cheese and ramp soufflé\, pea and watercress Rappahannock\, blackberry maslin\, thirded bread\, pound cake with “Oranges” juice\, maple cup custard\, pepper pot soup\, scalloped tomatoes\, dressed macaroni and cheese\, gingerbread cakes\, maple syrup tart\, quick pickling and Johnny cakes. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. \nCost for members is $10; non-members are $15. SUMMARY:Birds of Winter in Connecticut Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Over 25 varieties of common backyard birds can be seen in our area in winter\, and there is something very satisfying about feeding these avian friends during the harsh winter months. According to Herb Wilson\, ornithologist and professor emeritus of biology at Colby College\, “Bird feeding is a two-way street. We feed the birds to help them survive but also feed to lure the birds closer to us so that we may enjoy their beauty and behavior. We can start in 1854 with Henry David Thoreau. In his classic reflection Walden\, he writes of tossing half a bushel of unripe corn just outside his cabin and watching the various animals that were attracted to the corn\, including Blue Jays and Black-capped Chickadees.” \nSome species prefer open fields or others\, more forested neighborhoods. At this Birds of Winter in Connecticut workshop for kids\, museum educator Katherine Karlik will talk about identifying local birds that might visit a home feeder. The workshop project is making a birdfeeder using a grapevine ball filled with a mixture of suet\, cornmeal and birdseed. Children will help make their own snack. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child; non-member cost is $15 per child. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nIn 1934 Roger Tory Peterson published the Field Guide to the Birds and not only promoted birding through feeding but gave people their first portable\, easy-to-use\, and comprehensive means of identifying the birds they encountered. This helped contribute to the enjoyment of bird feeding as well as the development of species-specific feeding.
