SUMMARY:Women’s Suffrage Centennial in Wilton: Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck\, and the Vote [Exhibition]
DESCRIPTION:2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing and protecting the right to vote for (some) women. Pre-COVID\, the State of Connecticut launched the CT Women’s Suffrage Commission and encouraged municipalities and non-profits to work together to celebrate this anniversary.  A number of Wilton organizations planned events and activities to celebrate this important milestone. Originally scheduled to run as an in-person exhibit from June-September\, this exhibition has transitioned online.  \nOn November 2\, 1920\, Hannah Raymond Ambler proudly wrote “It is my first vote” in her daily journal. This triumphant and poignant phrase\, underlined for emphasis\, captures the voice of just one of the women in Wilton who campaigned for suffrage. Grace Knight Schenck\, a force to be reckoned with in the community\, was a leader who organized the first women’s suffrage meeting in town. The stories of these two women are at the heart of the Wilton Historical Society’s online exhibition “Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote\,” which joins the national recognition of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. \nThe exhibition will explore objects\, images\, texts\, historic costumes\, vignettes\, and music to illustrate the activities and contributions of Wilton suffragists\, with a special focus on Hannah Ambler and Grace Schenck—placing the local story in state and national context. \nTheir last names may be well known in Wilton–Ambler Farm and Schenck’s Island are local landmarks–but their individual lives are not. This exhibition will shine a light on Hannah\, Grace\, and other Wilton women who became citizens at last in 1920. \nCitizens at Last:  Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote will be available indefinitely on the Wilton Historical Society website. \nThis exhibition was made possible with the generous support of the Elizabeth Raymond Ambler Trust. \n

SUMMARY:Booked for Lunch: Creating Connecticut–Critical Moments That Shaped a Great State by State Historian Walter Woodward
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society‘s Next Booked for Lunch on Zoom! Creating Connecticut: Critical Moments That Shaped a Great State\, by State Historian\nWalter Woodward. \nConnecticut State Historian Walter Woodward helps us understand how people and events in Connecticut’s past played crucial roles in forming the culture and character of Connecticut today. \nWoodward\, a gifted story-teller\, brings to life the history we thought we knew in new ways\, from the nearly forgotten early presence of the Dutch to the time when Connecticut was New England’s fiercest prosecutor of witches\, the decades when Nutmeggers were rapidly leaving the state\, and the years when Irish immigrants were hurrying into it. \nWhether it’s his investigation into the unusually rough justice meted out to Revolutionary War hero Nathan Hale\, or a peek into Mark Twain’s smoking habits\, Creating Connecticut will leave you thinking about our state’s past–and its future–in a whole new way. \nThe suggested contribution is $10.00\, and registration (via email) is essential. Registered participants will receive a confirmation\, Zoom session ID Code\, and instructions about how to submit questions.

DESCRIPTION:In this unusual political climate\, and with the turbulent waters of a pandemic to navigate\, it’s essential to our well being that we find higher ground. So what does this mean? In order to find peace\, we must elevate. Rise to a higher altitude. \nPlease join the Wilton Woman’s Club (WWC) on Thursday\, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. via Zoom for a special evening that is centered around you returning to the center of your peace and gaining a sense of higher altitude in the challenges of your life. \nWilton Licensed Psychotherapist\, Chausey Leebron will lead us on a guided meditation\, teach skills based on the principles of Spiritual Psychology\, and take questions on how to process challenges we may be facing. To learn more about Leebron\, please visit her website. \nWe are grateful to offer you this unique opportunity for renewal that will be especially supportive just before the holidays. All are welcome to attend–WWC membership is not required but is encouraged. \nPlease register for this event and/or become a member of the Wilton Woman’s Club by visiting the Wilton Woman’s Club website. We hope you can join us for this experience!
