SUMMARY:Transition Planning and College Readiness
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET Wilton is glad to welcome Jane Thierfeld Brown\, EdD\, in Part II of our webinar series\, Post High School and College Planning: Helping Our Students with Disabilities Prepare for Their Future and Find the Right Path. \nTransitioning from high school to college or employment can be difficult for any student\, but especially for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The structure and predictability provided in high school are gone. The social and academic supports these students may have relied on during their high school years are suddenly removed. The organization\, communication\, social\, and “life” skills required in a college or employment setting are heightened. Our role as “parent” changes legally when our “child” turns 18. For all these reasons\, it is important to encourage students with ASD to develop critical academic\, social\, and life skills while in high school so they can transition to college or employment successfully. \nIf you missed the first webinar with Dr. Brown\, you can view the recording online.

SUMMARY:"Fire and Ice" Ice Cream Social at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 1 from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm the Wilton Historical Society Museum Complex will be buzzing with a fun event perfect for kids\, families\, and new residents. The “Fire and Ice” Ice Cream Social is a great way to get into the Fourth of July spirit. \nDocents in Colonial attire will demonstrate all manner of Colonial activities\, from firing Revolutionary War-style muskets to spinning and blacksmithing. Kids can try their hands at spoke shaving\, weaving\, and flax-breaking. Enjoy the ice cream social courtesy of the Drum Hill Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and Captain David Hawley Betts Society Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.). Learn about the Verbruggen Cannon\, an exact reproduction of a 1776 artillery also known as a “Grasshopper” and find out how it was loaded and fired. \nThe Wilton Historical Society will also debut a new exhibition: “Rebels and Redcoats: The Aftermath of the Battle of Ridgefield”. The highlight is an extraordinary Revolutionary War document\, a letter dated April 26\, 1777\, between General Selleck Silliman and Major General David Wooster\, which may be the last letter sent by General Wooster before he was killed the next day at the Battle of Ridgefield. The exhibition will be accompanied by a new “History is Here” video by Associate Curator Nick Foster. \nDrum Hill Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will hold a patriot look-up session at the ice cream social. Experienced genealogists will be on hand to help you discover your patriotic roots. You may have an ancestor who assisted in the Revolutionary War. Perhaps your ancestor fought; provided food\, clothing\, shelter; or signed an oath of allegiance. There were many ways to be a Revolutionary War patriot. Also on hand – members of the Captain David Hawley Society of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.)

SUMMARY:SPED*NET: Put Your Oxygen Mask On First - Simple Parenting Tools for Complex Little Kids
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET Wilton says that parents are of no use to their kids if they are overwhelmed. It’s crucial that parents keep in touch with their own physical\, mental and emotional pulse so they can provide the nurturing structure and guidance their children need. \non Thursday\, Oct. 14\, 9:30- 10:30 am\, School psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will discuss ways parents can keep themselves “steady and ready”— making sure their oxygen masks are properly on— by knowing how to recognize when their own stress levels may be interfering with their parenting goals and what to do when that happens. \nDave facilitates individual and group counseling sessions\, parent support groups\, and Dads-Only groups\, provides training and staff development to professionals\, and presents at LD conferences worldwide. He served as a school psychologist at Eagle Hill Schools for over 35 years and currently holds that position at The Southport School. Online registration for this webinar is required.

SUMMARY:Purposeful Play and Why It's Important for Learning
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library via Zoom for an interactive and informative experience on the importance of play in children’s development and how parents can play more intentionally with their children. The session will run from 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m. on Wednesday\, Jan. 26.  \nThrough play\, children learn how to engage and interact successfully in the world around them. Play is\, in fact\, a critical vehicle through which children achieve healthy developmental milestones. In theory\, playing with our children sounds like it should be easy: there are no rules; there is no script. But\, in reality\, the art of play can be overwhelming and confusing\, especially when the children have not yet developed foundational people-\, play- or group skills. \nIn this session\, Meghan Cave\, BCBA\, co-founder of The Hangout Spot\, LLC\, Connecticut’s first behavior analytic social skills development center\, will outline actionable steps parents can follow to play along with their children\, promoting social success and meaningful learning along the way. \nRegistration required. No charge for the program. This program is co-sponsored by Wilton Library\, SPED*NET\, Wilton Youth Council‘s Free Play Matters Task Force\, and Wilton Public Schools.

SUMMARY:Encouraging Responsibility and Independence — The Importance of Positive Communication at Home\, at School and in the Social Arena (ZOOM)
DESCRIPTION:As parents we want to do a good enough job guiding\, shaping and preparing our kids so that they don’t actually NEED us anymore! Keeping our kids’ eventual independence in mind allows us to provide reasonable parameters for them\, help them set goals\, and titrate the responsibilities they can assume. A key part of this process is strengthening our own positive communication skillshow we encourage and reinforce our kids’ development in these essential areas. \nSchool psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will discuss ways parents can promote responsibility and independence through positive interactions with their kids who have LD\, ADHD and Executive Function challenges. \nSylvester served as school psychologist at Eagle Hill Schools for over 35 years and currently is serving in that position at The Southport School. He facilitates individual and group counseling sessions\, parent support groups and Dads Only groups; provides training and staff development to professionals; and presents at LD conferences worldwide. \nRegister online.

Join us as we share helpful tips and case studies to help owners save money on their bills\, help the environment\, and maintain their homes — all at the same time! \nDon’t miss this detailed presentation by two experts! \nMarena Wisniewski serves as the State Register Coordinator for the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office\, as well as an environmental reviewer and coordinator of the Women’s and Minority History Trail. Prior to coming to Hartford\, she was the Preservation & Public Engagement Officer at the Providence Preservation Society\, as well as a private consultant serving New York City. She holds an MS in Historic Preservation from Columbia University and a MA in World History from NYU. Todd has worked at inspecting\, studying\, and preserving Connecticut’s historic resources since 2003.
