DESCRIPTION:Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream was to see people of all countries\, races\, and religions living together in harmony. His “I have a Dream” speech was delivered on Aug. 28\, 1963 at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before a crowd of 250\,000. Dr. King made references to our founding fathers and the Bible\, maintaining a positive and uplifting tone. A famous passage includes\, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” His speech was televised and brought favorable exposure to the movement and the landmark passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. \nAt this “I Have a Dream” Workshop for Kids\, museum educator Katherine Karlik will have the kids listen to an excerpt from King’s famous speech\, and talk about his vision and their dreams for a better world. The workshop project is creating a small canvas banner\, personalized with their dreams. The kids will help make their own snack. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. SUMMARY:Disaster Preparedness Training
DESCRIPTION:Wilton CERT will conduct basic training for citizens interested in learning about Disaster Preparedness. In this six-class course taught over two weeks (Jan. 20-Feb. 10)\, the training will cover a variety of emergency skills\, such as how to prepare for when a disaster strikes\, fire safety (including how to extinguish small fires and how to evacuate a smoke filled building)\, basic first aid\, disaster psychology\, hazardous materials\, terrorism awareness\, and other functions related to CERT operations such as radio communications and traffic control. The training involves classroom and field practical exercises. \nCERT Instructors certified by the Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security\, along with other instructors from the Police Department\, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service will assist in the training. At the conclusion of the course\, disaster preparedness backpack kits will be provided free to all participants. \nUpon successful completion of the course\, graduates are eligible for and encouraged to join the Wilton CERT organization.  As part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)\, Wilton CERT regularly provides assistance to the town and its first responders at large emergency incidents and public events.  Wilton CERT has performed a broad range of deployment activities\, including traffic and crowd control duties\, search and rescue for missing persons\, staffing Wilton’s emergency shelter and distributing emergency food and water as and when required. \nClass dates are Jan. 20\, 25\, and 27; and Feb. 3\, 8 and 10. The class is limited to 35 people\, so interested persons should register as soon as possible.  Visit the Wilton CERT website for information and to register online. Course participants must be 16 years or older; anyone wishing to join CERT must be at least 18. There is no cost for this training.

SUMMARY:Wilton YMCA Free Parent Workshop:  Tools for Working with Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Wilton Family YMCA\, this free parent workshop\, “Tools for Working with Anxiety\,” will introduce practical tools to interrupt the anxiety loop by purposefully cueing an activation of our parasympathetic nervous system. Using mindful awareness\, breath\, and body we will explore ways to shift our nervous systems from a state of “fight\, flight\, or freeze” to a place of “rest and digest.” \nThe workshop is presented by Jennifer Barrett\, who has been working with children for over two decades. She is the founder of We Grow Yoga and provides yoga and mindful awareness training to children of all ages as well as to the teachers and parents who guide them. She holds degrees in elementary and special needs education from Boston College. She has a 20 year dedicated yoga practice\, and is an active and registered member of Yoga Alliance. She is certified both through ChildLight Yoga and holds a 200 hour teacher certification through Breathe For Change with the lens of bringing yoga and mindful awareness practices to school communities. SUMMARY:Documentary:   "Angst: Raising Awareness about Anxiety"
DESCRIPTION:Following high community interest in this documentary when it was shown at the recent Day of Recovery at Wilton Presbyterian Church in November 2019\, church officials have arranged a second showing of the film\, Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety\, which was created to start community conversations about anxiety and to provide tools\, resources and hope. \nOn Sunday\, Jan. 26\, Wilton Presbyterian Church will hold a special screening of the documentary in our church Lounge to open up a dialogue between local families\, community leaders and experts. The event will feature a viewing of the 56-minute film\, followed by an informative discussion led by several area therapists/mental health professionals. \nThe producers have one goal: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Through candid interviews\, they utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships\, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film also includes a special interview with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps\, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all-time. In addition\, the documentary provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects\, along with the help\, resources and tools available to address the condition. \n“Part of the beauty of this film is the openness of the children and young adults featured; for some of them\, the Angst project marks the first time they are publicly sharing their experiences with anxiety. Our hope is that their candidness and bravery will inspire our community to do the same\,” says Rev. Shannon White of WPC. The film is appropriate for ages 6th grade through adult. \nWhile “Angst” documents the struggles some people have with anxiety\, it also reveals their hope for the future. Noah\, a teenager in the film\, describes it this way:  “Anxiety doesn’t define me. It’s not just a curse; it also gives me strength.” \n“Everybody needs to know that anxiety disorders are real\, common and treatable instead of viewing them as a personal choice or something to be ashamed of\,” said Dr. Jerry Bubrick\, senior director of the Anxiety Disorders Center\, Child Mind Institute. “Getting help early is crucial in giving people the tools they need to feel better. We just need to start the conversation.” \nAnxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S.\, impacting 54% of females and 46% of males\, with age seven being the median age of onset\, according to the World Health Organization. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable\, only one-third of those suffering receive treatment. Everyone involved in the development of “Angst” has a personal experience with anxiety–from the producers to the interviewees. \n“The conversation surrounding mental health really hits home for me\,” said the well-known athlete Phelps. “Many people don’t understand how debilitating mental illness truly can be\, and even more than that\, how common it is\, yet people are afraid to have the serious discussions about it. I welcomed the opportunity to be a part of Angst to further the dialogue around mental health and to help people understand the impact anxiety has on our mental state and encourage people\, especially kids\, to ask for help.” \nThis film and reception is funded by a grant from the Presbyterian Church\, Mental Health Ministries. The grant was given to Wilton Presbyterian Church last year and also funded the Day of Recovery last November. \nFree tickets are now available and space is limited! SUMMARY:Ambler Farm's Maple Syrup Tap-a-Tree Program
DESCRIPTION:Learn the science and history of maple sugaring by being a hands-on part of the process. There will be two training sessions offered; only ONE session is required for training. On that day you will choose a tree and hang your bucket that will collect sap. We will send regular updates on the running of the sap so you can come to Ambler Farm to collect sap from your tree. We will boil down the sap in our sugar shack and send each family home with their very own bottle of Ambler Farm maple syrup. \nPlease join us for one training session on Feb. 1\, either at 10 a.m. OR 1 p.m.. \nThe season runs from early February to mid-March. Maple syrup production is winter farming and\, therefore\, weather dependent. A typical season is five weeks long. If you are traveling during February or March\, we will collect sap for you. \nEnrollment limited to 110 families. This program sold out quickly in previous years\, so please do not wait to sign up! The number of trees at the Farm is limited\, so we are unable to accommodate late requests or wait lists. \nCost:  $60 per member family\, $65 per non-member family \nRegistration opens to members on Jan. 2\, non-members on Jan. 17\, space permitting.

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society's Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids:  Hand Pies
DESCRIPTION:“The first pies\, called ‘coffins’ or ‘coffyns’ (the word actually meant a basket or box) were savory meat pies with the crusts or pastry being tall\, straight-sided with sealed-on floors and lids. Open-crust pastry (no tops or lids) were known as ‘traps.’ These pies held assorted meats and sauce components and were baked more like a modern casserole with no pan (the crust itself was the pan\, its pastry tough and inedible). The crusts were often made several inches thick to withstand many hours of baking\,” says What’s Cooking\, America. \nHand pies are small circles of thick pie dough\, filled and folded over\, baked\, then ready to be pocketed and eaten on the run. Museum educator Katherine Karlik will talk with the kids about how to make these self-contained foods which were easy to cook\, inexpensive\, portable and could be consumed anywhere with minimal mess. The hand pie will be cherry\, in honor of George Washington’s birthday (Feb 22\, 1732). \nThe Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids workshop at the Wilton Historical Society teaches kids a “reciept” (recipe) used in the Connecticut region. While the food is prepared\, they hear about Colonial manners\, morals and way of life. The monthly workshops feature relatively simple dishes made with local\, seasonal ingredients\, adapted for modern kitchens. All participants will sample their own cooking and take home recipe cards–as well as any leftovers! The children will learn how a Colonial kitchen would have operated\, in order to appreciate the modern conveniences we take for granted. Previous sessions have made bannock cakes\, pease porridge\, pickles\, an amulet of green peas\, apple tansey\, fairy butter\, pumpkin bread\, cranberry shortbread\, New Year’s “cakes\,” and New England chowder. Suggested for ages 6-12. \nCost for members is $10; Non-members are $15. Primary documents indicate that pilgrims cooked with fowl and venison — and it’s not unlikely that some of that meat found its way between sheets of dough at some point. The colonists cooked many a pie: because of their crusty tops\, pies acted as a means to preserve food\, and were often used to keep the filling fresh during the winter months. And they didn’t make bland pies\, either: documents show that the Pilgrims used dried fruit\, cinnamon\, pepper and nutmeg to season their meats. Further\, as the colonies spread out\, the pie’s role as a means to showcase local ingredients took hold and with it came a proliferation of new\, sweet pies.” \n– Time.com

DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Dr. Kelly Marino\, presented by the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society \nWith 2020 marking the Centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society have partnered to present a talk by Dr. Kelly Marino. “The Movement was a Great ‘Mosaic’: Connecticut Women and Stories from the Suffrage Campaign” will take place on Saturday\, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m.. \nWell-known suffragist and later Ridgefield\, CT resident Alice Paul once commented that she always felt that the women’s movement was a sort of “mosaic”. Each person “puts in one little stone” and makes a unique contribution important to fueling the larger effort. \nMarino’s presentation explores the history of the suffrage movement in Connecticut by highlighting the stories of several key women who contributed to the campaign in different ways. It includes colorful narratives from their biographies and backgrounds as well as their tactics and reform efforts to promote women’s right to vote and other causes beyond to improve the lives of women and children in the United States. \nIn addition to recognizing the Suffrage movement\, the event will also serve to celebrate the founding of the League of Women Voters on Feb. 14\, 1920 plus the establishment of the Wilton branch 40 years ago. The location is the Wilton Historical Society\, and the presentation will be followed by a reception. \nAll are welcome. She graduated with her Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2016 and started work at Sacred Heart University in the Fall of 2019. Dr. Marino teaches courses on United States history and surveys of western civilization.

SUMMARY:Wilton High School Organic Garden Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton High School Garden Club is conducting an organic garden native plant sale\, now through April 24; plant pickup is Saturday\, May 9. \nNot only can residents purchase wildflower seedlings for their own gardens\, their purchases will help benefit the local Pollinator Pathway and improve the wider habitat in Connecticut. \nWilton High School is the first high school in Connecticut as well as New England to become a member of the EcoType Project\, which is\, “a plant and place based approach to land stewardship and agrarian resilience in the Northeast.” To help support a new initiative\, the WHS Garden Club is teaming up with the CT Chapter of the Northeastern Organic Farmers Association (CT NOFA)\, the Wilton Conservation Land Trust and the Pollinator Pathway. WHS senior Brett Gilman has met with members of these groups to learn more about this project and to take action. Most recently\, he has led the entire Garden Club in growing wildflower seedlings and has organized a partnership with Planters Choice Nursery LLC of Newtown to hold a native pollinator plant sale this spring. \nThe goals of the project are to help educate people about the native wildflowers that grow in this area as well as get people interested in planting them to help improve the natural ecosystems in the state. The students will be holding a sale this spring so people can purchase some of these and plant them in their yard to help support the Pollinator Pathway here in Wilton as well as improve the habitat for native species of birds\, butterflies\, and bees. Additionally a portion of the sale of each plant purchased will go to help the Wilton High School Organic Garden Club\, which not only is working to actively improve the habitat in Wilton but also runs the school’s organic garden which produces food for the high school cafeteria. \nIn addition to the plant sale\, the students will be taking some of the extra plants and will be using them in the school’s own butterfly garden as well as planting some in areas of the town so that they can monitor their growth\, distribution\, and will also have access to some native seed stock\, which they can then harvest and grow for future years. This is going to allow the students of WHS to have an ongoing research opportunity and also a way to document and prove the positive things that happen when natives are planted. \nDonna Merrill\, executive director of the Wilton Land Conservation Trust and Pollinator Pathway co-founder\, says the Trust is thrilled to partner with the WHS Garden Club. \n“Providing landowners with the native plants that support our insects gives our entire town the chance to be part of the Pollinator Pathway. I find it so exciting to watch the students be the educators. By making the right plants available for our bees and butterflies they’re proving that what each of us do in our own backyards makes a difference.” \nThe position of CT NOFA is clear about the importance:  “Our Response:  We must restore native habitat to safeguard our food system. Our initiative exists at the intersection of farms\, gardens\, land trusts\, and public lands: we aim to increase the number of native plants growing in our region. DESCRIPTION:Join a coalition of child development and education organizations for a screening of LIKE\, a new IndieFlix original documentary film that explores the impact of social media on our lives. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, licensed clinical psychologist\, and Chris Parrott\, BPS\, chartered counseling psychologist–two popular speakers on the topic of managing the impact of digital devices and content. \nTechnology is a tool that’s here to stay and social media platforms are places to connect\, share and care. But what’s really happening? \nFifty-seven percent of all teens agree that using social media often distracts them when they should be doing homework. Twenty percent of teen drivers say they check notifications while driving\, at least sometimes. And 57% of teens say that if parents knew what happens on social media\, they’d be a lot more worried about it. \nSo\, are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 5 at 6:30 p.m.\, the Wilton League of Women Voters\, the Wilton Library\, the Wilton Historical Society\, and the James B. Whipple American Legion Post 86 will all co-sponsor a movie screening and panel discussion on of the documentary film The Hello Girls. This film tells the story of the 223 women sent to France in 1918 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps to work on the war effort as telephone operators. After a 60-year effort\, with the help of Senator Barry Goldwater and Congresswoman Lindy Boggs\, they finally won recognition in 1977. \nThe event is part of Wilton’s town-wide Centennial Celebrations of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment. Panelists joining for the discussion following the screening include Ret. Captain Doris Lippman\, EdD\, US Army\, Vietnam Veteran\, and recipient of the Honorary Order of the Purple Heart; Dr. Amy Pettigrew\, granddaughter of “Hello Girl” Ellen Turner and former Dean\, Dade College School of Nursing and Xavier University School of Nursing; and Dr. Darla Shaw\, Professor Emeritus\, at Western Connecticut State University\, and beloved actor/depictor of Women in History. \nRegistration is strongly urged\, and can be done online or call 203.762.6334.
