The screening will be followed by a discussion with Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, licensed clinical psychologist\, and Chris Parrott\, BPS\, chartered counseling psychologist–two popular speakers on the topic of managing the impact of digital devices and content. \nTechnology is a tool that’s here to stay and social media platforms are places to connect\, share and care. But what’s really happening? \nFifty-seven percent of all teens agree that using social media often distracts them when they should be doing homework. Twenty percent of teen drivers say they check notifications while driving\, at least sometimes. And 57% of teens say that if parents knew what happens on social media\, they’d be a lot more worried about it. \nSo\, are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 5 at 6:30 p.m.\, the Wilton League of Women Voters\, the Wilton Library\, the Wilton Historical Society\, and the James B. Whipple American Legion Post 86 will all co-sponsor a movie screening and panel discussion on of the documentary film The Hello Girls. This film tells the story of the 223 women sent to France in 1918 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps to work on the war effort as telephone operators. After a 60-year effort\, with the help of Senator Barry Goldwater and Congresswoman Lindy Boggs\, they finally won recognition in 1977. \nThe event is part of Wilton’s town-wide Centennial Celebrations of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment. Panelists joining for the discussion following the screening include Ret. Captain Doris Lippman\, EdD\, US Army\, Vietnam Veteran\, and recipient of the Honorary Order of the Purple Heart; Dr. Amy Pettigrew\, granddaughter of “Hello Girl” Ellen Turner and former Dean\, Dade College School of Nursing and Xavier University School of Nursing; and Dr. Darla Shaw\, Professor Emeritus\, at Western Connecticut State University\, and beloved actor/depictor of Women in History. \nRegistration is strongly urged\, and can be done online or call 203.762.6334. SUMMARY:Wilton Library/Historical Soc. Scholarly Series: Jazzed Up–The History of Jazz in America\, Reggie Quinerly Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In the 13th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series focuses on the theme of “Jazzed Up: The History of Jazz in America.” \nIn this lecture\, Reggie Quinerly addresses the factors\, influences and artistic offerings associated with the unique period in America’s history that was the Harlem Renaissance. \nDuring the 1920s\, the African-American enclave of Harlem was the epicenter of a deep cultural transformation. This movement acknowledged and utilized the artistic expression of many brilliant thinkers. The impact of this Renaissance was widespread and became the essential crucible from which a new generation emerged. \nQuinerly grew up in a rich musical environment in Houston and graduated from the Mannes School of Music at New School University where he got to study with three great drummers:  Jimmy Cobb\, Lewis Nash\, and Kenny Washington. After some time honing his chops on the scene\, he returned to school earning his Master’s in Jazz Studies at the prestigious Juilliard School. He has played with such leading artists as Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, Joe Lovano\, Chico and Von Freeman\, and Greg Osby. In 2017\, he fulfilled a life-long goal of returning to higher education\, this time as a Juilliard faculty member and in the summer of 2019\, he joined the faculty at Hunter College. He holds a Supervisors certification and Vice-Principal and Principal certifications in Education. He is a member of Percussive Arts Society and the New Jersey Education Association. \nThe moderator is Steve Hudspeth. \nThe series is sponsored by Charles Schwab & Co.\, Inc.; the media sponsor is The Wilton Bulletin. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nCider Mill School music teacher Cheryll Ryder and museum educator Katherine Karlick will lead an engaging intro to jazz and the legacy of Wilton’s own jazz man\, Dave Brubeck\, in the Wilton Historical Society presentation\, “Brubeck for Kids: A Hands-on Jazz Exploration Workshop.” \nBrubeck’s innovative combinations of rhythms and meters\, as evidenced on his 1959 Take Five album (the greatest selling jazz record of all time) will be the inspiration for this workshop. Children will explore three music stations:  working with keyboards and headphones to try their hand at adding a musical score to visual images\, as if they are writing a score for a movie; working with xylophones; and investigating new sounds with rhythm instruments. A guided tour of “Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album” exhibition is included\, as is a snack. \nSuggested for children ages 6-12. Cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10; non-members are $15. WE WILL UPDATE AS SOON AS RESCHEDULING INFORMATION IN AVAILABLE. \nWilton High School Theater\, in collaboration with the Safe School Climate Committee\, brings a special performance of 26 Pebbles to the Little Theater stage on Thursday\, March 19. Student directed by WHS senior Jack Parrotta and overseen by WHS faculty member Kevin Slater\, 26 Pebbles honors the community and memories of Sandy Hook\, CT. \nActor and playwright Eric Ulloa traveled to Newtown\, CT to conduct interviews with over 60 members of the community five months following the tragedy in 2012. The text from these interviews became the content of 26 Pebbles. \nThe play provides a unique lens into the aftermath of a tragedy that shook the nation and shattered this nearby small town. The story follows the events that took place in Newtown during the months following the tragedy and the collective struggle of the town’s new reality. \n“I did my best to remind myself of the place artists inhabit in this world\, how we navigate a path where our talents can be employed not only to help individual healing but also initiate societal change\,” Ulloa said about the process of creating the play. \nUltimately\, 26 Pebbles serves as a reminder to the power of connection\, kindness and compassion in the wake of destruction. All proceeds from ticket sales to the Wilton High School performance will be donated to Sandy Hook Promise\, a non-profit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were murdered on Dec. 14\, 2012\, that is committed to creating community programs that engage discussion and awareness of gun violence prevention. \n“26 Pebbles is about how we\, as a community and society\, react and respond to tragedy. It’s about the ripples caused by trauma and ultimately a story of hope\,”  says Jake Vitarelli\, one of the student performers\, about the production. \nCast and crew include Sarah Bates\, Lily Casiraghi\, Hunter Driscoll\, Jake Eagan\, Brielle Flavin\, Devin Moran\, Jack Parrotta\, Lauren Parrotta\, Sasha Sypher\, Jake Vitarelli\, Olivia Vitarelli and Eleanor Winrow. \nThe performance will be held on Thursday\, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wilton High School Little Theater. Tickets are $10. Our human books are community members who have volunteered to share their stories in order to break down barriers based on appearance or identity (e.g.; age\, race\, sexual orientation\, religion\, ability\, lifestyle choices\, etc.). The Human Library is an international movement that started in Denmark in 2000 and is now held in more than 70 countries. Wilton Library is the first non-academic library in Connecticut to receive permission from the Human Library Organization to host an event. This is the time for open conversations between two people in a non-judgmental environment. Spend a few minutes with each “book.”  It is an opportunity for those who have faced prejudice to tell their story and show people who they really are; and it is a chance for others to change their preconceived notions based on a person’s appearance or identity. No advance registration; no fee. Come and enjoy the experience.

SUMMARY:Colonial Cookery for Kids: Plimoth Plantation Chowder
DESCRIPTION:During the winter months\, a hearty soup or chowder was just what a Colonial girl or boy would have craved at meal time. This month\, children who attend the Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids program at the Wilton Historical Society will be making a creamy chowder. \n“The origins of the word ‘chowder’ are somewhat obscure\, but most authorities\, including the Dictionary of American Regional English\, believes it derives from the French word for a large caldron\, chaudiere\, in which Breton sailors threw their catch to make a communal stew…” writes John F. Mariani in the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink. “Chowder was a staple dish of New Englanders…By the end of the century certain New England regions became known for their various interpretations of chowder–one might find cream in one spot\, lobsters in others\, no potatoes elsewhere–but most were by then a creamy white soup brimming with chopped fish or clams\, crackers\, and butter…” \nMuseum educator Katherine Karlik will be teaching the class about various kinds of chowders and how to prepare a creamy-style New England version. \nEvery month\, the Colonial Cookery for Kids workshop at the Wilton Historical Society teaches kids in grades 4-8 a Colonial “reciept” (recipe) used in the Connecticut region. \nThe workshops feature relatively simple dishes made with local\, seasonal ingredients. The recipes used are adapted for modern kitchens–done for safety reasons\, and also so that the attendees can recreate their meals at home. The children will sample their own cooking and take home recipe cards–as well as any leftovers! \nParticipants will learn how a Colonial kitchen would have operated\, in order to appreciate the modern conveniences we take for granted. Previous sessions have made bannock cakes\, pease porridge\, pickles\, an amulet of green peas\, apple tansey\, fairy butter\, pumpkin bread\, cranberry shortbread\, New Year’s “cakes\,” New England chowder\, hand pies\, cheese and ramp soufflé\, pea and watercress Rappahannock\, blackberry maslin\, thirded bread\, pound cake with “Oranges” juice\, maple cup custard\, pepper pot soup\, scalloped tomatoes\, dressed macaroni and cheese\, gingerbread cakes\, maple syrup tart\, quick pickling\, Johnny cakes\, and applesauce cake. \nThe program is suggested for children ages 6-12. The Zero Waste Faire and Sustainable Living Expo is intended to educate and inspire the public through discussion and interaction. This cannot be achieved if the authorities are warning people to avoid crowds and unnecessary gatherings. We also do not want to put anyone at risk. With the Governor’s announcement on Sunday that the first confirmed case in CT is a Wilton resident\, we could no longer see a path forward that would allow the event we have all worked to achieve. \nSince we are unsure of the timeline for this public health emergency\, it did not seem wise to try and reschedule for this calendar year. DESCRIPTION:2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing and protecting the right to vote for (some) women. The State of Connecticut has launched the CT Women’s Suffrage Commission and is encouraging municipalities and non profits to work together to celebrate this anniversary.  A number of Wilton organizations have planned events and activities to celebrate this important milestone. \n\nThe Wilton Woman’s Club is holding a short story contest on the theme of the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage. Girls who are Wilton residents in grades 9-12 are encouraged to submit a fictional short story related to American women gaining the right to vote. Deadline is April 27\, 2020. \nThe topic can be anything. Some hypothetical examples: \n\nA story of an 18 year old woman in 1920\nA sci-fi story about a parallel universe where women never got the right to vote\nA mystery about a conspiracy to prevent passage of the amendment\n\nRequirements: \nThe story must be 2\,500 words or less\, typewritten\, in English. It must be related to American women’s right to vote. The story must be original\, and written by the submitter\, who must be a female resident of Wilton\, CT\, currently in grades 9-12. \nThe deadline is 11:59 p.m.\, April 27\, 2020. \nEmail a PDF or Word document by the deadline. Include entrant’s full name\, email\, and home address with the submission. SUMMARY:Wilton High School Organic Garden Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton High School Garden Club is conducting an organic garden native plant sale\, now through April 24; plant pickup is Saturday\, May 9. \nNot only can residents purchase wildflower seedlings for their own gardens\, their purchases will help benefit the local Pollinator Pathway and improve the wider habitat in Connecticut. \nWilton High School is the first high school in Connecticut as well as New England to become a member of the EcoType Project\, which is\, “a plant and place based approach to land stewardship and agrarian resilience in the Northeast.” To help support a new initiative\, the WHS Garden Club is teaming up with the CT Chapter of the Northeastern Organic Farmers Association (CT NOFA)\, the Wilton Conservation Land Trust and the Pollinator Pathway. WHS senior Brett Gilman has met with members of these groups to learn more about this project and to take action. Most recently\, he has led the entire Garden Club in growing wildflower seedlings and has organized a partnership with Planters Choice Nursery LLC of Newtown to hold a native pollinator plant sale this spring. \nThe goals of the project are to help educate people about the native wildflowers that grow in this area as well as get people interested in planting them to help improve the natural ecosystems in the state. The students will be holding a sale this spring so people can purchase some of these and plant them in their yard to help support the Pollinator Pathway here in Wilton as well as improve the habitat for native species of birds\, butterflies\, and bees. Additionally a portion of the sale of each plant purchased will go to help the Wilton High School Organic Garden Club\, which not only is working to actively improve the habitat in Wilton but also runs the school’s organic garden which produces food for the high school cafeteria. \nIn addition to the plant sale\, the students will be taking some of the extra plants and will be using them in the school’s own butterfly garden as well as planting some in areas of the town so that they can monitor their growth\, distribution\, and will also have access to some native seed stock\, which they can then harvest and grow for future years. This is going to allow the students of WHS to have an ongoing research opportunity and also a way to document and prove the positive things that happen when natives are planted. \nDonna Merrill\, executive director of the Wilton Land Conservation Trust and Pollinator Pathway co-founder\, says the Trust is thrilled to partner with the WHS Garden Club. \n“Providing landowners with the native plants that support our insects gives our entire town the chance to be part of the Pollinator Pathway. I find it so exciting to watch the students be the educators. By making the right plants available for our bees and butterflies they’re proving that what each of us do in our own backyards makes a difference.” \nThe position of CT NOFA is clear about the importance:  “Our Response:  We must restore native habitat to safeguard our food system. Our initiative exists at the intersection of farms\, gardens\, land trusts\, and public lands: we aim to increase the number of native plants growing in our region. To do this\, we are growing seed crops of Connecticut’s native pollinator plants\, wild collected from our open-spaces\, and bringing them to our nursery growers and homeowners so that we can produce the plants to restore native pollinator habitat.” \nTo learn more about the project\, visiting the WHS Garden Club website and order online.

SUMMARY:Get Smart for Wilton 5K (to Benefit Wilton Education Foundation)
DESCRIPTION:Come run for a great cause! The Get Smart for Wilton 5K presented by community partners in support of the Wilton Education Foundation is scheduled for Sunday\, May 24 at 9 a.m.. \nThis family-friendly charity event is a chip-timed race on a USATF certified course and attracts runners of all levels\, from elite racers to beginners\, raising visibility and funds to support the Wilton Public Schools. \nA fun\, active way to kick off the spring holiday weekend\, the event draws everyone from strollers to casual joggers\, serious runners to marathoners\, all excited be a part of this superb community-wide event. The energy at the race is palpable\, as families\, neighbors and classmates cheer one another on\, enjoying the shared camaraderie. \nThe fundraiser’s 5K route starts and ends at the Wilton High School track\, featuring Cider Mill and WHS prominently along the course. About 300 runners participate each year\, making for a high-spirited and celebratory atmosphere. High school athletes join elite local runners\, teachers\, seniors\, and moms and dads running with their kids and sometimes pushing jogging strollers\, for the run. \nCash prizes are given to the top three male and female runners\, and awards go to the top three runners in each division. Pre-registered participants receive a T-shirt. Runners of all ability levels are always welcome and proceeds from the race support enrichment opportunities for Wilton public school students. \nThe fee to run is as follows: \nPre-registration online\n$25 – ages 13 and younger\n$27 – adults \nRace day registration:\n$25 – ages 13 and younger\n$30 – adults \nCOURSE:\nThe race runs through the Wilton school area and cross country trails. \nOPEN TO:\nAll–runners + walkers of every age welcome!
