SUMMARY:Spring Migration Birding at Allen's Meadow and its Community Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join the Norwalk River Watershed Association for this series of free spring migration bird walks led by expert birder\, conservationist\, master gardener and Wilton resident Joe Bear. Bear will lead everyone on a leisurely two-hour walk from 8-10 a.m. through the diverse habitats this well-known birding hot spot has to offer — open fields\, woods\, woodland edges\, pond\, and swamp — to seek out returning summer residents\, those on their way to northern breeding grounds\, and maybe a vagrant or two. Previous spring walks have yielded a wide variety of species\, including both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles\, Bobolink\, Indigo Bunting\, Scarlet Tanager\, Eastern Kingbird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Flycatchers\, Vireos\, and a variety of colorful Warblers.  You’ll get a chance to see up close Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows vying for one of the 12 nest boxes erected by Bear in and around the Little Bluestem meadow.  Bear will also talk about the new native pollinator meadow he’s been working on since 2021.\n\nPlease register using the attached link\, and park in front of the Field 6 sign at Allen’s Meadow.\n\nThis event takes place:\nWed. SUMMARY:The Importance of Connecticut to the Revolution with Mike Allen
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut played an outsized role in winning U.S. independence from the British Empire. Prominent historical figures contributed to the formation of the new country\, while Connecticut earned the nickname “the provision state” because of its supplies of food and ammunition to the Continental Army. \nMilitary actions in Danbury\, Ridgefield\, Saugatuck\, Groton\, New London\, New Haven\, Greenwich\, Norwalk\, and Fairfield were significant. \nRoger Sherman\, Israel Putnam\, Jonathan Trumbull\, Benedict Arnold\, Noah Webster\, and others played critical roles\, while other notable figures visited the state during the Revolutionary War years: George Washington\, French General Rochambeau\, John Hancock\, and more. \nThe Connecticut Compromise broke a stalemate in the Continental Congress and allowed progress to continue forming the Constitution. \nNoted storyteller and journalist Mike Allen\, former host of the popular podcast Amazing Tales About History\, will walk through the key people and events in Connecticut during our nation’s tumultuous march to independence\, 250 years ago. \nThe talk will be held on Thursday\, April 30\, at 7:00 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society (224 Danbury Road in Wilton).\nThe event is free for Historical Society members. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that black tea\, green tea\, white tea and oolong tea all come from the same plant? Learn about how these different teas are made and what gives them their unique\, subtle flavors and characteristics! Woodcock Nature Center educator Tommy McCarthy will lead the group on a short guided hike along the Woodcock trails and then through a relaxing tasting session of three or more different types of loose leaf tea including Japanese green tea\, Taiwanese oolong tea\, and Chinese black tea\, brewed in traditional tea ceremony style in our pavilion. ​ \nRegistration is required\, at $55 per person. This event is recommended for ages 13 and up.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy great food\, immersive experiences and community unity\, all while supporting Wilton’s museum at the Wilton Historical Society’s Food Truck Festival. \nOn Sunday\, May 31\, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. come to Schenck’s Island and Chess Park to feast from a collection of the area’s finest food trucks\, with all proceeds to benefit the Historical Society. \nAttendees can explore Wilton’s culinary and food-producing history\, with re-enactments from knowledgeable colonial educators. The festival will also include live music\, historically inspired games and crafts\, face painting\, and more! Live music provided by The Mojo Rhythm Kings and Rubberband. \nThe food trucks that will be at the festival are: Cousins Maine Lobster\, Greek Style Grill\, The Chamo\, Layla’s Falafel\, Los Poblanos\, Chef Jeffs BBQ\, Silver Sands Pizza\, Retreat Sweets\, Foolproof Brewery\, Barrelsmith Cocktails\, Italian Ices of CT\, Lucky Dog\, Simply Smashed and Wilton Outback Steakhouse. \nAll proceeds from admissions go directly to the Wilton Historical Society’s mission to preserve Wilton’s history\, and connect\, engage and educate all who would look to the past to shape the future. \nTickets are available to purchase ahead of time and at the event day-of! SUMMARY:Working for the Revolution: Patriot Women’s Lives During the War
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society on Thursday\, Jun. 4 at 7 p.m. for a presentation by professor emerita and publisher Kathy Hermes. The talk will explore how women contributed to the American Revolutionary effort politically\, economically\, intellectually and even militarily. Using original sources like newspapers\, court records\, letters and pension records\, Hermes will show how Indigenous\, Anglo-European and African-descended women all helped to further the Patriot cause. \nHermes is the publisher and executive director of Connecticut Explored magazine\, a non-profit history publication produced for readers interested in Connecticut’s past. She is professor emerita of history at Central Connecticut State University\, where she taught early American history for 25 years. She has created and been involved with a number of digital public history projects\, including Forgotten Voices of the Revolutionary War: People of Color and the Redding Encampment\, 1778-1779. \nThe talk will be held on Thursday\, Jun. 4 at the Wilton Historical Society at 7 p.m. The event is free for Historical Society members; for non-members\, there is a $10 fee.
