SUMMARY:Zero Waste Faire & Sustainable Living Expo–CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Please read the letter from organizers\, below\, or refer to GOOD Morning Wilton‘s story: \nUPDATE:  MARCH 9 \nDear Wilton Go Green Supporters\, \nIt is with deep disappointment that we inform you of our decision to cancel the Zero Waste Faire & Sustainable Living Expo for 2020. \nOver the last few weeks we have been monitoring the spread of the COVID19 virus\, discussing and reviewing our options. The Zero Waste Faire and Sustainable Living Expo is intended to educate and inspire the public through discussion and interaction. This cannot be achieved if the authorities are warning people to avoid crowds and unnecessary gatherings. We also do not want to put anyone at risk. With the Governor’s announcement on Sunday that the first confirmed case in CT is a Wilton resident\, we could no longer see a path forward that would allow the event we have all worked to achieve. \nSince we are unsure of the timeline for this public health emergency\, it did not seem wise to try and reschedule for this calendar year. We will be working to secure our date for 2021 in the coming months and will share that date with you as soon as we have it so you too can mark your calendars. \nWe have been thrilled by the tremendous support and phenomenal growth of the Zero Waste Faire from 30 to 103 exhibitors in 3 years! We cannot express how much all the enthusiasm from our committee members\, community members\, sponsors and exhibitors has meant to us. \nOn behalf of our entire Zero Waste Faire Committee and Wilton Go Green Board\, we are so grateful for your excitement and support of this year’s Faire. \nWe knew it was going to be an amazing year!! \nWith great patience and your continued support we will revive this energy and look forward to seeing you in 2021. \nSincerely\, \nTammy Thornton\nPresident\, Wilton Go Green\nCo-Chair Zero Waste Faire \nOriginal event:  The Zero Waste Faire and Sustainable Living Expo is a special event designed to educate\, inspire\, entertain\, and engage the town of Wilton and neighboring communities about zero waste and sustainable living. The Faire is sponsored by Wilton Go Green. \nBy sharing information and ideas from speakers\, exhibitors\, media\, and discussions of current issues\, the Faire\, a Zero Waste event\, will help advance Zero Waste practices that benefit everyone. With your participation\, this event will be even more dynamic than last year’s\, which received broad accolades\, featured over 100 exhibitors\, and had an attendance of over 1\,000 people of all ages from CT\, NY and MA. \nThere are a number of ways you can participate and we’d love to hear from you to talk about how you can get involved. Email Wilton Go Green to learn more.

SUMMARY:Wilton High School Organic Garden Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton High School Garden Club is conducting an organic garden native plant sale\, now through April 24; plant pickup is Saturday\, May 9. \nNot only can residents purchase wildflower seedlings for their own gardens\, their purchases will help benefit the local Pollinator Pathway and improve the wider habitat in Connecticut. \nWilton High School is the first high school in Connecticut as well as New England to become a member of the EcoType Project\, which is\, “a plant and place based approach to land stewardship and agrarian resilience in the Northeast.” To help support a new initiative\, the WHS Garden Club is teaming up with the CT Chapter of the Northeastern Organic Farmers Association (CT NOFA)\, the Wilton Conservation Land Trust and the Pollinator Pathway. WHS senior Brett Gilman has met with members of these groups to learn more about this project and to take action. Most recently\, he has led the entire Garden Club in growing wildflower seedlings and has organized a partnership with Planters Choice Nursery LLC of Newtown to hold a native pollinator plant sale this spring. \nThe goals of the project are to help educate people about the native wildflowers that grow in this area as well as get people interested in planting them to help improve the natural ecosystems in the state. The students will be holding a sale this spring so people can purchase some of these and plant them in their yard to help support the Pollinator Pathway here in Wilton as well as improve the habitat for native species of birds\, butterflies\, and bees. Additionally a portion of the sale of each plant purchased will go to help the Wilton High School Organic Garden Club\, which not only is working to actively improve the habitat in Wilton but also runs the school’s organic garden which produces food for the high school cafeteria. \nIn addition to the plant sale\, the students will be taking some of the extra plants and will be using them in the school’s own butterfly garden as well as planting some in areas of the town so that they can monitor their growth\, distribution\, and will also have access to some native seed stock\, which they can then harvest and grow for future years. This is going to allow the students of WHS to have an ongoing research opportunity and also a way to document and prove the positive things that happen when natives are planted. \nDonna Merrill\, executive director of the Wilton Land Conservation Trust and Pollinator Pathway co-founder\, says the Trust is thrilled to partner with the WHS Garden Club. \n“Providing landowners with the native plants that support our insects gives our entire town the chance to be part of the Pollinator Pathway. I find it so exciting to watch the students be the educators. By making the right plants available for our bees and butterflies they’re proving that what each of us do in our own backyards makes a difference.” \nThe position of CT NOFA is clear about the importance:  “Our Response:  We must restore native habitat to safeguard our food system. Our initiative exists at the intersection of farms\, gardens\, land trusts\, and public lands: we aim to increase the number of native plants growing in our region. To do this\, we are growing seed crops of Connecticut’s native pollinator plants\, wild collected from our open-spaces\, and bringing them to our nursery growers and homeowners so that we can produce the plants to restore native pollinator habitat.” \nTo learn more about the project\, visiting the WHS Garden Club website and order online.

SUMMARY:Ambler Farm Transplant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to start growing your own vegetables and flowers? Now’s a great time to plant your garden and it’s a fun activity the whole family can do together. And Ambler Farm has already-germinated plants for easy transition into your garden. You can choose from more than 225 varieties of plants this season. \nAbout Our Transplants\nOur transplants are 100% organically grown in our greenhouse from seed in a compost-based potting soil and they are lovingly tended by our director of agriculture\, Jonathan Kirschner. \nWe strive to give you plants that will do well when you are ready to plant them in your garden. We plant seeds in organic matter soil in our warm greenhouse where they germinate. We then transition the plants to our unheated hoop house before finally moving them outside. Transplants grown with our methodology suffer less transplant shock and show better resistance to adverse conditions such as disease and pest pressure. Transplants include those that are suited for a colder Northern climate (when planted). \nSafe Shopping\nSale Dates:  May 16\, 22\, 23\, and 30 \nTo ensure everyone’s safety\, we are opening the Transplant Sale for more days and longer hours this year. And Ambler Farm has already-germinated plants for easy transition into your garden. We plant seeds in organic matter soil in our warm greenhouse where they germinate. We then transition the plants to our unheated hoop house before finally moving them outside. SUMMARY:Comstock Hill Cemetery – Stewardship Workday
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Land Conservation Trust\, in partnership with the Drum Hill Chapter NSDAR\, invites the community to celebrate our Nation’s Independence by stewarding the Comstock Hill Cemetery. This cemetery is the final resting grounds for six Revolutionary War Patriots. In honor of Independence Day 2020\, and the 246th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War\, the WLCT has partnered with the Drum Hill Chapter NSDAR to put together a community stewardship workday to improve the quality of the cemetery’s trail and grounds. \nThis workday will focus on the trail that winds through the cemetery\, general brush maintenance\, and the hand-pulling of invasive species.
