SUMMARY:Spring Migration Birding at Allen's Meadow and its Community Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join the Norwalk River Watershed Association for this series of free spring migration bird walks led by expert birder\, conservationist\, master gardener and Wilton resident Joe Bear. Bear will lead everyone on a leisurely two-hour walk from 8-10 a.m. through the diverse habitats this well-known birding hot spot has to offer — open fields\, woods\, woodland edges\, pond\, and swamp — to seek out returning summer residents\, those on their way to northern breeding grounds\, and maybe a vagrant or two. Previous spring walks have yielded a wide variety of species\, including both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles\, Bobolink\, Indigo Bunting\, Scarlet Tanager\, Eastern Kingbird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Flycatchers\, Vireos\, and a variety of colorful Warblers.  You’ll get a chance to see up close Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows vying for one of the 12 nest boxes erected by Bear in and around the Little Bluestem meadow.  Bear will also talk about the new native pollinator meadow he’s been working on since 2021.\n\nPlease register using the attached link\, and park in front of the Field 6 sign at Allen’s Meadow.\n\nThis event takes place:\nWed. Prior to that he co-chaired the Building Working Group of the Governor’s Council on Climate Change. His focus is on building energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption. Additionally\, he is a member of the Connecticut Energy Network’s Steering. \nA former middle school Tech Ed teacher\, Andy Bauer\, became a grassroots environmental activist in 2000 with the ‘Sooty Six’ campaign to clean up old and dirty power plants. That greatly expanded his understanding of the various impacts of non-renewable forms of power and the ability of regular citizens to do something about it. In 2005\, he founded the Portland\, CT\, Clean Energy Task Force\, which he continues to Chair. Andy became Coordinator of the CT Energy Network in 2024 and hosted a 2025 press conference at the legislature\, highlighting the many necessary aspects of CT’s Public Benefits Charge. DESCRIPTION:Trees for Trout is back in Wilton! \nConsider “eco-cycling” your tree with Trout Unlimited to help improve the health of our local rivers! Each year\, millions of Christmas trees are simply discarded after the holidays\, but can go to good use providing habitat for a number of species. \nTU volunteers will happily turn your natural tree into important habitat for trout in the Norwalk River. Your tree will join others in helping stabilize stream-banks\, reduce erosion and create refuge habitat for juvenile trout and other aquatic life during projects all summer long. \nCollection will take place on both Saturday\, Jan. 3 and Saturday\, Jan. 10 at Merwin Meadows Park from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. both days. Just drive up with your tree and our volunteers will take care of the rest. \nSuggested donation is $10 \nFriendly reminder: natural trees only — synthetic trees or trees with tinsel or flocking cannot be accepted.
