DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Chapter of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) invites the Wilton community to view this exhibition about Hindu Civilization. \nHindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA\, Inc.\, is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization that promotes self-discipline\, self-confidence\, and a spirit of selfless service for humanity through its structured values-based educational program for Hindu children and adults. Currently\, HSS operates nearly 250 branches nationwide\, including four branches in the state of Connecticut. \nHindus contribute to the surrounding society as individuals and as a community. To let our neighbors\, leaders\, educators\, and the broader community know more about Hindu Civilization\, Wilton HSS is presenting an exhibition called\, “Darshana: A Glimpse into Hindu Civilization.” We are pleased to invite you to this very first exhibition at Comstock Community Center (180 School Rd.) on Sunday\, April 3 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. \nHSS volunteers were at the forefront of humanitarian relief in their respective neighborhoods in 2020 during the challenging time of COVID-19 and helped in vaccination drives in many communities. Apart from the social service efforts — called “Sewa” projects — our annual national programs such as “Health for Humanity Yogathon” have gained in popularity in American society where people of all walks of life participate. \nThis exhibition is a platform to engage the public while fostering common ideals and shared values. This event is for all ages and people from all walks of life\, and it’s an opportunity to deepen awareness of Hindu culture and contributions to society\, creating an environment of harmonious coexistence while pursuing Universal Oneness. This exhibition provides glimpses into Hindu Dharma\, a way of life\, and Hindu Civilization\, including traditions\, culture\, contribution\, and fun facts.

SUMMARY:Garden Club Celebrates 100th Anniversary with Flower Show
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Garden Club will host a flower show on Friday\, Sept. 24 from 1-4 p.m. and Saturday\, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. as part of the Club’s Centennial celebrations. \nWilton’s historic Old Town Hall\, (2 Belden Hill Ln.) will be transformed with floral designs reflecting fashion and flowers during the last 100 years\, as well as photography\, conservation\, and local horticulture exhibits. \n“We are excited to celebrate our history in such a meaningful way with the community\,” said flower show Co-Chair Yolanda Bonomo\, who noted that Wilton Garden Club’s first flower show was held in 1922\, one year after its founding. \nThe public is invited to experience this extraordinary creative and educational event and enjoy the colorful displays evoking the history of the Club throughout the decades. This will be a judged National Garden Club Small Standard Flower Show. \nA Century of Flowers in Fashion will be a flower extravaganza as it spotlights 28 creative floral and botanical designs reflecting fashion and flowers in vogue from the Roaring 20s\, when the Club was established\, through the 1980s and to the present day. Expect to see Fancy Flapper\, Gatsby\, Rock and Roll\, Old Hollywood\, Disco and eclectic 1980s designs presented. \nAlways popular and fun to see will be the local horticulture display\, which will encompass a huge variety of prime flower specimens selected from Club Members’ gardens. A special treat this year will be the photography division\, entitled “Hometown Photo Shoot” with black and white and color photos capturing beauty and nature in Wilton. \nAn educational conservation exhibit will guide the public on the ecological importance of incorporating native plants in local landscapes and the necessity of identifying and removing invasive plants and shrubs to protect wildlife. Several other fascinating displays by the Club’s award-winning Youth Gardeners will demonstrate their design expertise as well as knowledge of horticulture. Wilton’s Girl Scouts will grace the Old Town Hall landscape with fairy garden mini vignettes designed by their collections of plant material in all shapes\, textures\, and colors. \nWilton is expected to remain lush and blooming after a hot and rain-filled summer turns to fall\, a perfect time for the public to enjoy the creativity of the Wilton Garden Club members as they showcase their commitment to horticulture\, education\, and conservation while celebrating the Club’s 100th birthday. \nThe event is free with a suggested $10 donation. Parking should be accessed from Belden Hill Rd. at Belden Hill Ln. near the Ridgefield Rd. intersection and traffic light. The “Fire and Ice” Ice Cream Social is a great way to get into the Fourth of July spirit. \nDocents in Colonial attire will demonstrate all manner of Colonial activities\, from firing Revolutionary War-style muskets to spinning and blacksmithing. Kids can try their hands at spoke shaving\, weaving\, and flax-breaking. Enjoy the ice cream social courtesy of the Drum Hill Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and Captain David Hawley Betts Society Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.). Learn about the Verbruggen Cannon\, an exact reproduction of a 1776 artillery also known as a “Grasshopper” and find out how it was loaded and fired. \nThe Wilton Historical Society will also debut a new exhibition: “Rebels and Redcoats: The Aftermath of the Battle of Ridgefield”. The highlight is an extraordinary Revolutionary War document\, a letter dated April 26\, 1777\, between General Selleck Silliman and Major General David Wooster\, which may be the last letter sent by General Wooster before he was killed the next day at the Battle of Ridgefield. The exhibition will be accompanied by a new “History is Here” video by Associate Curator Nick Foster. \nDrum Hill Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will hold a patriot look-up session at the ice cream social. Experienced genealogists will be on hand to help you discover your patriotic roots. You may have an ancestor who assisted in the Revolutionary War. Perhaps your ancestor fought; provided food\, clothing\, shelter; or signed an oath of allegiance. There were many ways to be a Revolutionary War patriot. Also on hand – members of the Captain David Hawley Society of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.)

SUMMARY:Rebels and Redcoats: The Aftermath of the Battle of Ridgefield Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In April 1777\, war came to Wilton. After burning part of Danbury and destroying Continental Army supplies\, British troops under General William Tryon marched through Wilton on their way back to Westport and their fleet. With a sudden alarm sent throughout Connecticut warning of a British invasion\, many hastily assembled soldiers fought to repel the enemy from their homes. Now open\, the Wilton Historical Society presents “Rebels and Redcoats: The Aftermath of the Battle of Ridgefield”\, an exhibition which explores the actions of British\, Patriots\, and civilians involved in the Revolutionary War action known as the Raid on Danbury\, with a particular focus on the march of British troops south down Ridgefield Road through Wilton. \nWilton resident John Reznikoff\, a historic document expert\, has loaned the highlight of the exhibition – an extraordinary piece of correspondence between Patriot Generals David Wooster and Selleck Silliman. The rare 1777 document\, which may be the last one sent by General Wooster before he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Ridgefield the following day\, is displayed along with other historic artifacts and documents from the Permanent Collection of the Wilton Historical Society. The exhibition extends through October 30.

SUMMARY:Women’s Suffrage Centennial in Wilton:  Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck\, and the Vote [Exhibition]
DESCRIPTION:2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing and protecting the right to vote for (some) women. Pre-COVID\, the State of Connecticut launched the CT Women’s Suffrage Commission and encouraged municipalities and non-profits to work together to celebrate this anniversary.  A number of Wilton organizations planned events and activities to celebrate this important milestone. Originally scheduled to run as an in-person exhibit from June-September\, this exhibition has transitioned online.  \nOn November 2\, 1920\, Hannah Raymond Ambler proudly wrote “It is my first vote” in her daily journal. This triumphant and poignant phrase\, underlined for emphasis\, captures the voice of just one of the women in Wilton who campaigned for suffrage. Grace Knight Schenck\, a force to be reckoned with in the community\, was a leader who organized the first women’s suffrage meeting in town. The stories of these two women are at the heart of the Wilton Historical Society’s online exhibition “Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote\,” which joins the national recognition of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. \nThe exhibition will explore objects\, images\, texts\, historic costumes\, vignettes\, and music to illustrate the activities and contributions of Wilton suffragists\, with a special focus on Hannah Ambler and Grace Schenck—placing the local story in state and national context. \nTheir last names may be well known in Wilton–Ambler Farm and Schenck’s Island are local landmarks–but their individual lives are not. This exhibition will shine a light on Hannah\, Grace\, and other Wilton women who became citizens at last in 1920. \nCitizens at Last:  Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote will be available indefinitely on the Wilton Historical Society website. \nThis exhibition was made possible with the generous support of the Elizabeth Raymond Ambler Trust. \n

SUMMARY:Call for entries in FOCUS '20
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Arts Council is seeking photographers of all ages\, including youths and high school students\, to enter its 22nd annual photography exhibit\, “FOCUS ’20\,” to be held from March 7-27\, 2020 at the Wilton Library. Photographers are allowed to enter up to two of their photos\, which may be film or digital images in color or black and white\, and may be enhanced by darkroom or digital techniques. \nFOCUS ’20 entries will be judged by a panel of notable area photographers in three divisions:  Adult (professional and amateur combined)\, High School Student (9-12 grade) and Youth photographers (pre-elementary through 8th grade). Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded for:  Best of Show (which is open to all); first through fifth places in the adult division; and first\, second and third place in each of the high school and youth divisions. Ribbons will also be presented for honorable mention in each of the divisions. \nTo enter photos in FOCUS ‘20\, photographers may drop off their work at the Wilton Library on Saturday\, Feb. 29\, from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; and on Sunday\, March 1\, from 1:30-4:30 p.m.. Entry dimensions must be at least 8″ x 10″ framed and wired for hanging; there is no limit as to maximum size. Please see the Wilton Arts Council’s website for the entry form and FAQs. \nFor each photo entered in the exhibit\, the fee is $5 for youths\, $10 for high school students and Wilton Arts Council members\, and $20 for non-members. Photographers are welcome to join the Wilton Arts Council at the time of drop-off. \nA reception and awards ceremony will be held on Friday\, March 13\, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Wilton Library and is open to the public. SUMMARY:Transforming Tradition:  Japanese and Korean Contemporary Craft  (Online Exclusive)
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Asia Art Week 2020 this March\, browngrotta arts has collated contemporary works by 12 artists born in Japan and Korea for an online exhibition\, “Transforming Tradition:  Japanese and Korean Contemporary Craft.” The works include ceramics\, weavings\, baskets and sculptures made of paper and silk. \nNotable in the exhibition are paper sculptures by Naomi Kobayashi and an elegant silk thread assemblage by her late husband\, Masakazu Kobayashi. The couple often collaborated\, working on installations that combined elements created by each of them. \n“These works express a shared vision and such common themes as the tranquility of nature\, the infinity of the universe and the Japanese spirit\,” Masakuzu once explained. “Naomi and I work in fiber because natural materials have integrity\, are gentle and flexible. In my own work\, I search for an equilibrium between my capacity as a creator and the energy of the world around me.” \nKeiji Nio’s interlaced wall work is inspired by a haiku\, “Rough Sea of Sado\,” from Japanese haiku master Matsuo Basho’s haiku series. In it\, Basho describes the deep blue waves of the Sea of Japan as they are reflected in the night sky and the light blue waves hitting the beach. The work incorporates ribbons on which Nio has screened images from the sea and tiny pebbles from the shore. Nio is a faculty member at the Kyoto University of Art & Design\, who combines industrial and natural materials in his works to make statements about nature and man’s relationship to the world. \nSeveral ceramics by Yasuhisa Kohyama\, are included in Transforming Tradition. Kohyama is a renowned Shigaraki potter who uses ancient techniques to explore new forms. He gained widespread attention in Japan in the 60s when he built one of the first anagama kilns since medieval times. Collectors and museums have been quick to acquire his works\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Cleveland Museum of Art\, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam\, the Gardiner Museum of Art in Toronto\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Museum of Art and Craft in Hamburg and the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Shiga\, Japan. Kohyama’s work graces the cover of Contemporary Clay:  Japanese Ceramics for the New Century by collectors Alice and Halsey North and curator Joe Earle. \nBamboo sculptures by Jiro Yonzawa are also part of browngrotta arts’ exhibition. Yonezawa has been recognized with the Cotsen Prize\, a commission from Loewe to work in leather and inclusion in the prestigious Japan Nitten National Fine Arts Exhibit. Yonezawa has explained his work:  “Bamboo basketry for me is an expression of detailed precision. These baskets represent a search for the beauty and precision in nature and a way to balance the chaos evident in these times.” \nKorean artist Chang Yeonsoon\, who creates ethereal works of starched indigo\, was Artist of the Year at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul in 2008. SUMMARY:Call for entries in FOCUS '20
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Arts Council is seeking photographers of all ages\, including youths and high school students\, to enter its 22nd annual photography exhibit\, “FOCUS ’20\,” to be held from March 7-27\, 2020 at the Wilton Library. Photographers are allowed to enter up to two of their photos\, which may be film or digital images in color or black and white\, and may be enhanced by darkroom or digital techniques. \nFOCUS ’20 entries will be judged by a panel of notable area photographers in three divisions:  Adult (professional and amateur combined)\, High School Student (9-12 grade) and Youth photographers (pre-elementary through 8th grade). Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded for:  Best of Show (which is open to all); first through fifth places in the adult division; and first\, second and third place in each of the high school and youth divisions. Ribbons will also be presented for honorable mention in each of the divisions. \nTo enter photos in FOCUS ‘20\, photographers may drop off their work at the Wilton Library on Saturday\, Feb. 29\, from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; and on Sunday\, March 1\, from 1:30-4:30 p.m.. Entry dimensions must be at least 8″ x 10″ framed and wired for hanging; there is no limit as to maximum size. Please see the Wilton Arts Council’s website for the entry form and FAQs. \nFor each photo entered in the exhibit\, the fee is $5 for youths\, $10 for high school students and Wilton Arts Council members\, and $20 for non-members. Photographers are welcome to join the Wilton Arts Council at the time of drop-off. \nA reception and awards ceremony will be held on Friday\, March 13\, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Wilton Library and is open to the public. Photos will be for sale throughout the exhibit unless otherwise designated\, and the Wilton Library will receive a 20% commission on the sale price of each photograph sold.

Register online or call 203.762.6334. \nBy combining representational forms and imagery that denote the power\, subjugation and performativity associated with gender\, Sklar acts to implement her personal vision of an undefined spectrum of beauty and corporal strength using materials such as clay\, paint\, graphite and discarded sport objects to create tense assemblages. \nWeir Farm’s Artist-in-Residence program (AIR) selects 12 artists to live and work at Weir Farm each year. To date\, over 200 artists from throughout the U.S.\, as well as Tunisia\, Germany\, Australia\, India and the Netherlands have participated in the AIR program. Visual artists apply for one month residencies in all media and diverse artistic points of view from traditional to experimental.

SUMMARY:Remembering Dave:  A Brubeck Family Album
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz legend – and Wilton’s own — Dave Brubeck\, the Wilton Historical Society will present a special exhibit\, Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album. Opening Friday\, Feb. 21\, the exhibition will run through April 18\, 2020. \nWhen he bestowed upon the jazz great the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor at the White House in 2009\, President Barack Obama stated\, “In order to understand America\, you have to understand jazz\, and in order to understand jazz\, you have to understand Dave Brubeck.”  As a pianist\, bandleader and composer\, Dave Brubeck (1920-2012) is widely acknowledged as one of America’s most significant post-swing era jazz musicians\, creating a body of music that was bold and accessible. \nAll are invited to the opening reception on Friday\, Feb. 21\, from 4-6 p.m. (no charge). The exhibition incorporates material from the Dave Brubeck:  Jazz Ambassador show\, which detailed his illustrious 70-year career and was presented at Jazz at Lincoln Center soon after Brubeck’s death\, and highlights other facets of his life such as his impact as a composer\, a performer\, a civil rights activist and as family man. \nThe Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album exhibition presents additional material that speaks to Dave’s life in Wilton with his wife Iola\, and six kids\, including musicians Darius\, Chris and Dan. Growing up on a vast ranch in California\, he learned to ride\, how to be a cowboy; visitors will be able to see a Western-style saddle that belonged to his father\, as well as Dave’s cowboy hat. A highlight of the exhibition is the opportunity to see a new short film produced by the Brubeck family which contains rare footage of “Cowboy Dave.” Another section of the film shows Wilton composer\, lyricist\, pianist\, and educator Eugenie Rocherolle interviewing fellow musician Dave Brubeck. \nEntrance is free for Wilton Historical Society members; entry is $10 for non-member adults\, and free for children under 18. \nDave Brubeck 100 is the world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of Dave Brubeck\, the jazz composer\, pianist\, cultural ambassador\, and visionary musician\, which will take place on Dec. 6\, 2020.

SUMMARY:How Sweet It Is in Wilton Gingerbread House Contest
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library and the Wilton Chamber of Commerce are inviting individuals\, families\, groups\, organizations and businesses to submit gingerbread or other edible models of Wilton houses or buildings to be put on display in the library. \nDrop off dates and times for the creations are Sunday\, Dec. 1\, from 1-4:30 p.m. and Monday\, Dec. 2\, from 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m.. \nEntries will be judged in two age groups by prominent community members. The groups are 12 and under; and ages 13 to adult. \nThis year\, in conjunction with Wilton Library’s 125th anniversary\, the contest celebrates the past\, present and future of Wilton. Residents are encouraged to create an edible model of a house\, building\, public space or any other aspect of Wilton to represent the town’s past\, present and imagined future. Winners will be judged in three categories–Most Whimsical\, Best Historical Wilton Place\, and Most Visionary Design of a Wilton Place. \nFrom Dec. 3-Dec. 16\, visitors to the library also can vote for their favorite models. Winners will be announced Dec. 18 at 4 p.m.. \nWinning submissions\, including the Community Favorite\, will be awarded Wilton Chamber gift certificates courtesy of Fairfield County Bank. The Wilton Historical Society is the place to be–come enjoy the ever-popular Great Trains Holiday Show! \nAfter the familiar Thanksgiving rituals of parades\, turkey and football\, keep the family fun going\, and enjoy the beginning of the holiday season. Take the children in your life to an entrancing afternoon with trains and live entertainment. Dressed for the holidays\, the Wilton Historical Society’s historic 18th and 19th century buildings are transformed into a train-lovers delight with many different model train layouts winding through tiny towns with a variety of different kinds of buildings\, tunnels and even a working gondola! The display enchants visitors of all ages with lots of buttons to push and knowledgeable “train engineers” on hand to “talk trains”. \nNew this year–a spectacular model winter village upstairs in the Toy Loft\, which is filled with the favorite toys of yesteryear. In a special train room for the youngest guests\, Thomas the Tank Engine and Brio trains are ready for hands-on fun. \nThe Great Trains Holiday Show is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.\, and Sundays\, 12-4 p.m.\, beginning Friday\, Nov. 29\, 2019 through Monday\, January 20\, 2020. \nAdmission is free for members of the Society; $5 per non-member child and $10 for non-member adults.
