SUMMARY:87th Cannon Grange Agricultural Fair & Exposition
DESCRIPTION:An authentic agricultural fair\, the Cannon Grange Ag Fair is the only fair of its kind in lower Fairfield County! Area residents are invited to exhibit a variety of baked goods and culinary arts\, homegrown vegetables\, fruit\, flowers\, hand crafts\, sewing & needlework\, photography\, small farm animals\, eggs and photography. \nThe Cannon Grange Fair recalls Wilton’s rural and agrarian past\, and provides an opportunity for children\, youth\, adults and families to enjoy the exhibits inside the historic Grange Hall and on its grounds located in the heart of Cannondale Village. Several state-level baking contests are available from the Association of CT Fairs with their Adult Baking\, Junior Baking and 2-Crust Apple Pie Contests. Both concessionaires and area Non-Profits will also show on the fair grounds. \nA new baking contest is being inaugurated in 2019 with the “Dave Barrett–Cannon Grange Perpetual Trophy” contest. Dave and his wife Joyce have been avid fair participants\, having won many baking contests in previous years. DESCRIPTION:July brings Myung Gyun You to the Weir Farm Artist-in-Residence Program at the Wilton Library. After immigrating to the United States from South Korea several years ago\, Myung has traveled constantly from place to place around the country\, noticing the evidence of deep geological history amidst the wide range of natural habitats. He has been collecting soils from each place he travels to and incorporates these soils into his work\, expressing the evolutionary history of the planet as part of his man-made pieces. SUMMARY:Bullets\, Bonds\, and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War 1776-2006
DESCRIPTION:Opening on March 15\, Bullets\, Bonds\, and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\, 1776-2006\, the new exhibition at the Wilton Historical Society\, commemorates the contributions of both the soldiers and the townsfolk who answered the call of war. While troops fought on the front lines\, Wilton residents of all ages back at home were engaged in supporting the war effort in ways both large and small. Rationing\, writing letters to the troops\, knitting socks and making bandages\, buying war bonds\, manufacturing diverse supplies\, spotting airplanes from observation towers\, collecting scrap\, sending soccer balls to underprivileged children around the world\, and in some cases\, protesting against war were all part of the response. \nBullets\, Bonds\, and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\, 1776-2006 includes material from the Revolutionary War\, the War of 1812\, the Civil War\, World War I\, World War II\, the Korean War\, the Viet Nam War\, and the war in Iraq. To mark the anniversary of the birth of the American Legion in March of 1919\, the Wilton Historical Society worked with Adjutant Tom Moore of Wilton’s James B. Whipple Post 86 to develop a special section on the history of the organization\, which includes some of their artifacts. \nThe opening day of the exhibition\, Friday\, March 15 from 2-3 p.m.\, will be celebrated with a “birthday” cake to honor Wilton’s Post 86 and the American Legion. All are invited!

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society's  Black History Month Exhibition:  "Tools of a Shameful Trade"
DESCRIPTION:Marking Black History Month\, the Wilton Historical Society presents\, Tools of a Shameful Trade\, a small exhibition of slavery artifacts. Though many of the objects which can be seen are from the south\, slavery in Connecticut dates back as far as the mid-1600s. The objects on display include a neck collar\, shackles\, a plantation whip\, and an 1835 broadside advertising a runaway slave. Also shown is a 1808-1824 ledger kept by Samuel Wakeman of Fairfield\, which includes references to eight individuals with African ancestry – Jeffrey Freeman\, Frederick\, Primus Burr\, Titus Freemen\, John\, Ned Freeman\, Hiram and Primas Jenning. \nThere were a number of families in Wilton who owned slaves\, including the well-known Lambert family\, whose ancestral home can be seen at 150 Danbury Rd. at Lambert Corner. A 1757 letter from the Wilton Historical Society’s permanent collection confirms the sale of a slave named Jack to David Lambert; it is also exhibited. Tools of a Shameful Trade will be on display through the end of February\, 2019. \nResearch has revealed that a black slave named Haggar\, born 1770\, and owned by Wilton’s Samuel Belden II\, was married to a Native American slave named Bill Tonquin. Tonquin was owned by another branch of the Belden family in Wilton. Haggar and Bill Tonquin had three children\, Prince\, Nancy and Black Jack\, and lived in the Belden Store at the corner of Ridgefield Rd. and “Danbury Pike” a crossways that is at the heart of Wilton’s town center. Haggar Tonquin is documented as being the last slave in Wilton. Her children were slaves\, but were born with the promise of freedom\, as they would have been freed at age 21 by the Connecticut law passed in 1783. \nWilton had a stop on the Underground Railroad\, at the home of the abolitionist William Wakeman on Seeley Road. \nThis exhibition would not be possible without generous exhibition loans by John and Samantha Reznikoff. \nThe Wilton Historical Society is open Tuesday-Saturday\, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, and is located at 224 Danbury Rd.

DESCRIPTION:Trains\, Trains\, and more Trains for the holidays at the Wilton Historical Society! \nAfter the familiar Thanksgiving rituals of parades\, turkey and football\, treat the children in your life to an entrancing afternoon with trains and live entertainment. Dressed for the holidays\, the Wilton Historical Society’s historic 18th and 19th century buildings are transformed into a train-lovers delight with many different model train layouts winding through tiny towns with a variety of different kinds of buildings\, tunnels and landscapes! The model train displays enchant visitors of all ages with lots of buttons to push and knowledgeable “train engineers” on hand to “talk trains.” In a special train room for the youngest guests\, Thomas the Tank Engine and Brio trains are ready for hands-on fun. The Wilton Historical Society is the place to be – come enjoy the ever-popular Great Trains Holiday Show! \nNew this year – model trains are toot\, toot\, tooting upstairs in the Toy Loft\, which is filled with the favorite toys of yesteryear\, where the very popular Alvin the Chipmunk layout can be found. \nModel train enthusiasts can see nine layouts\, including G\, HO\, O\, N\, S gauge and Lego trains. \nThe Great Trains Holiday Show opens on Friday\, Nov. 23\, 12-4 p.m.. \nAnd even more on Saturday\, Nov. 24!  Special Performance 2-3 p.m.\, puppeteer/singer/storyteller Tom H. Hanford. No charge \nJoin Tom Hooker Hanford as he performs seasonal songs and stories for kids at the Opening Weekend of the Great Trains Holiday Show! His programs combine music\, storytelling\, and colorful painted masks. DESCRIPTION:Silvermine Galleries will host CT Contemporary 2018\, which includes work from a selection of galleries that represent the ever-growing contemporary art gallery scene in Connecticut. Opening simultaneously is printmaker Margot Bittenbender’s solo show\, Imagine Alice…. The two exhibitions will run from Oct. 14 to Nov. 10\, 2018\, and the public is invited to an opening reception on Sunday\, Oct. 14 from 2-4 p.m.. \nCT Contemporary 2018\nFeatured in CT Contemporary 2018 are EBK Gallery in Hartford\, Fred Giampietro Gallery in New Haven\, Melanie Carr Gallery in Essex\, and the artists of the Silvermine Guild. Each gallery will show a variety of new work. Some will focus on a single discipline or theme. Joining the event as sponsors\, Handwright Gallery and Sorelle Gallery of New Canaan will welcome visitors at their in-town New Canaan locations. Silvermine will have a map available for the public. \n“We hope to give the public a chance to see vibrant and surprising works of contemporary art from galleries they might not normally have a chance to visit\,” said Roger Mudre\, director of the Silvermine Galleries\, “and we’re delighted to have the support of Handwright and Sorelle Galleries here in New Canaan.” \nEric Ben-Kiki of EBK Gallery\, located in downtown Hartford\, will exhibit sculpture—with an emphasis on material and object. EBK artists include Donna Forma\, Peter Kirkiles\, Terrence Lavin\, Maureen McCabe\, Adam Niklewicz\, and Peter Waite. Forms include lush\, curvilinear wood; organic objects; and works that merge the industrial and the lyrical. \nFred Giampietro Gallery\, located in New Haven near the Yale University Art Gallery\, will show paintings by Riley Brewster and various works by Jonathan Waters. Brewster writes that his paintings “employ an initiating form\, which operates spatially\, metaphorically\, and structurally as a threshold space.” Waters has worked with sculptors Mark di Suvero\, Charles Ginnever\, and Richard Serra\, and his work includes both sculpture and print collage. \nMelanie Carr Gallery of Essex is presenting the artwork of seven exceptional female contemporary artists all working in Connecticut. All have a dedicated practice and extensive exhibition record. The focus of the work ranges from contemporary figurative to minimalist sculpture. Carr herself is a Connecticut-based artist who began her studies in visual art after serving in the United States Navy as an Operations Specialist onboard the USS Willamette (AO-180) in Pearl Harbor\, HI. \nCT Contemporary 2018 offers an exciting selection of work from some of Connecticut’s most accomplished contemporary artists and cutting-edge galleries. The exhibition runs for 4 weeks and will be on view through Nov. 10. \nImagine Alice… Prints by Margot Bittenbender\nWhile she was living in Japan\, printmaker Margot Bittenbender was surprised to find Lewis Carroll’s Alice\, with the Tenniel illustrations\, in Japanese translation in a museum store in Kanazawa. She began to see Alice everywhere—in paintings\, in dioramas by children’s book illustrators\, in manga cartoons\, and even in a café where a costumed waitress served her a drink with a lit sparkler in the glass and wished her a Happy Un-birthday.” \nAn accomplished artist and teacher who spent 12 years living and working in Asia—in Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Tokyo\, Nishinomiya\, and Bangkok—Bittenbender wondered what sort of wonderland Alice might have found if the rabbit hole had opened up there instead of in England. Stately mums\, origami butterflies\, a magical mushroom kimono\, a Jabberwock in a bamboo forest\, and many other scenes came to life in her prints. “My Alice and I went walking through Japan together\, observing and dreaming\, seeing the real and the unreal\,” said Bittenbender. Her new solo show\, Imagine Alice…\, reinvents the familiar elements of Alice’s story—rabbits and roses\, pocket watches and playing cards and more—in deftly executed intaglio prints.

Inspired by the upcoming New York Fashion Week (Sept. 5-12)\, the event will toast the fashion exhibition “A Century of Style:  1860-1960.” Guest of Honor is Wilton’s Jade Hobson\, former style editor of Vogue Magazine\, who may be persuaded to share a story or two of her own experiences at Fashion Week. The exhibition runs through Oct. 6. All are invited. No charge. \nAbout the exhibition:\nThe Wilton Historical Society is presenting a fashion exhibition\, “A Century of Style: 1860-1960\,” open through Oct. 6. Decade by decade\, the exhibition traces evolving styles in women’s special occasion garb. From an all-white cotton lace flounced dress suitable for a tea party in a garden to a Jackie Kennedy-esque black A-line with satin bow\, an Edwardian bridesmaid dress with train to a sophisticated wasp-waisted 1940s dress with matching custom-made suede shoes\, style trends are captured in these carefully saved clothes which had special significance to their owners. Also on display are an acid-green silk high-necked gown with black netting and jet beads from the late 1880s which came from the Elizabeth Ambler Estate\, and was possibly worn by Betty Ambler’s grandmother. Lady Mary Crawley of Downton Abbey would have looked stunning in the stunning black chiffon flapper dress accented with rhinestones for a night on the town. A display of purses and women’s shoes rounds out the show. \nThe exhibition was developed by the Wilton Historical Society\, Pamela Hovland\, and Megan Smith-Harris.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Connecticut’s Historic Gardens Day at Weir Farm National Historic Site\, where gardens and art go hand-in-hand. Weir Farm National Historic Site\, the only national park dedicated to American painting\, is a proud member of Connecticut’s Historic Gardens\, an organization committed to preserving and promoting historic gardens throughout Connecticut. \nFormer Weir Farm artist-in-residence Bonnie Beers Johnson won this year’s annual Historic Gardens Day Poster Art Contest and will be at the park with her original work. Come view the winning painting\, Weir Farm Peonies\, and learn more about the stunning historic gardens that have been inspiring artists for over a century. Park staff and Garden Gang volunteers will offer short informal talks in the Sunken Garden and Secret Garden about each garden’s history\, flowers\, restoration\, and ongoing preservation. \nIn addition to the talks\, visitors can spend an afternoon painting en plain air in the gardens using the park’s free-to-use watercolor supplies. Instructor Bobbi Eike Mullen will be available to provide tips on watercolor painting. Join us for a fun-filled Historic Gardens Day!
