DESCRIPTION:In an effort to strengthen neighborhood connections and create opportunity for face-to-face conversation\, Wilton Youth Council’s Free Play Task Force is encouraging participation in Wilton’s Big Block Party Weekend. The theme is “Building community one block at a time.” The next town-wide weekend is September 15-16\, with each road or neighborhood choosing its own day and time. SUMMARY:5K Run and Walk to Benefit Education in India
DESCRIPTION:Education is a central Wilton topic–most usually with a very local focus. But now\, one organization with ties to more remote areas in Asia is devoting some of that focus to education overseas. \nA local\, CT chapter of an organization called Ekal Vidyalaya\, made up of families with ties to India\, is organizing a fundraising effort to continue their support of growing education in rural and tribal Indian communities. Ekal Vidyalaya is a movement focused on creating and growing one-teacher schools in remote Indian villages to bring education to all children in the country. Since starting in 1986\, Ekal has become the largest grassroots level non-governmental education and development movement operating in rural India. \nEkal Vidyalaya is organizing 5K Run and Walk on Sunday\, Sept. 16 in Merwin Meadows\, starting at 9 a.m.\, to raise funds to continue their work. Registration to take part in the 5K costs $20 per adult\, $10 per child. \nThe CT chapter of Ekal was started in 2010. That year the group raised funds for 100 schools and has continued to grow 30% every year\, contributing a total of 500+ schools by 2018. There are approximately 50 families in Fairfield County who have been involved in the local effort. 500 schools are part of the 75\,000 schools created by the global effort\, impacting more than 2 million students. \nAccording to the Ekal website\, the movement aims to help eradicate illiteracy from rural and tribal India\, following a philosophy of rural development based on criteria of equality and inclusiveness across all sections of society. \nEkal says each school is managed and run for just $365 a year. The money funds teachers more than physical infrastructure or buildings. It hires and trains teachers\, and aims to utilize physical space free of cost. The website says that Ekal’s administrative costs are less than 10% of contributions and the majority of the organization’s workforce is volunteer. \nFor more information\, contact organizers via email or visit the chapter’s Facebook page.

New vendors that will be welcomed this year include M.EAT Provisions\, which offers certified organic meats and grass-fed beef; Wilton’s own Painted Cookie\, with nut free cookies and baked goods; Earth Blues\, with accessories made from up-cycled grocery bags\, feed bags and denim; Sova Theater\, a puppeteer; and Angie’s Cocinita\, a new food truck featuring authentic Mexican and Cuban Cuisine. \nGuest vendors will also be making appearances each week; some of the guests planned are Bare Burger of Ridgefield\, and Bubble and Brew\, a new bubble tea and baked goods vendor.

DESCRIPTION:Wilton Parks and Recreation is putting on a free movie night for Wilton residents on Friday\, Sept. 28\, with a showing of Disney/Pixar’s Coco. The movie will run from 7:15-9 p.m. at Merwin Meadows Park. Free popcorn will be given out on a first come\, first serve basis until it runs out. \n*The event location has been changed to the Cider Mill School Gym.\nBring a non-alcoholic beverage and any picnic items you may want with your chair or blankets and enjoy the outdoor movie experience. Come early to get your space and have a picnic on the grass or at one of the picnic tables in the park. \nNo pets please. Pets are not allowed in the park. The inclement weather location is the Cider Mill School lower gym. Organizers will have a sign at Merwin if the venue is changed.

DESCRIPTION:The Kiwanis Club of Wilton will have its third annual Oktoberfest at the Wilton YMCA. This is a fun-filled family event with German bier and wine\, bratwurst or chicken\, sauerkraut\, German potato salad\, hot dogs\, french fries and cold soda for the kids. \nMusic will be provided by the Alpine Squeeze who will play all types of music throughout the evening\, with Hans filling in with his accordion during breaks to keep people up and dancing. The event goes on rain or shine\, but seating will be in the pavilion or under tents\, so weather is not an issue. \nEntrance fee will be $35 for adults and will include a Bratwurst or Chicken platter with Bier or wine. Children under 21 will be $6\, and will have a hot dog\, French fries\, soda or water. Advance adult tickets can be purchased for $26 by going to www.WiltonOktoberfest.org.

SUMMARY:Skywatch Reprise
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday evening\, Oct. 14\, the Conservation Commission\, in collaboration with Norwalk River Watershed Association\, Wilton Garden Club\, Wilton Land Conservation Trust\, and Woodcock Nature Center will offer a reprise of the educational and enjoyable Skywatch they hosted in November 2016. \nTo be held again at Slaughter Field at the corner of Nod Hill and Piper’s Hill Rds.\, the event will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will include sightings of several lunar\, planetary and other astronomical wonders through the telescopes of members of the John J. McCarthy Observatory in New Milford\, CT. \nThere will be a bonfire near the Piper’s Road entry where makings of s’mores\, hot chocolate\, hot cider\, and other refreshments prepared and offered by members of the Conservation Commission will be available to all. \nAttendees should park along Piper’s Hill Rd. and dress for the weather (as well as care against ticks) including long pants and long-sleeved shirts since the astronomers also will provide an opportunity to lie on the ground to identify some of the celestial bodies overhead. The Commission also suggests bringing a blanket to lay on the ground. \nWhile the event is free\, registration via email will help with planning and ensuring attendees can get up-to-date information about go/postpone to the rain date. Because the Skywatch will occur in a dark environment\, dogs are not permitted for this occasion to avoid any harm to attendees or pets. The rain date is two weeks later\, Sunday\, Oct. 28\, at 7:30 p.m.\, in time to join goblins and witches as they fly past the moon!

The tour will soon visit us at the Fairfield Theatre Company on Sunday\, Oct. 21\, with films that will explore the themes connected to Mountainfilm’s mission–using the power of film\, art and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world. \nA Mountainfilm presenter will guide the audience through the program providing insight on the films\, filmmakers and subjects. \nThe show kicks off at 6:30 p.m.. Tickets for Mountainfilm on Tour at the Fairfield Theatre Company are on sale NOW and can be purchased online. DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Town of Wilton and the Wilton Police Department\, the Wilton Chamber of Commerce is pleased to host Wilton’s Annual Halloweekend events! Launching the weekend of fun events is the Pumpkin Parade/Trick or Treat event. \nTrick or Treat with local businesses on Saturday Oct. 27\, from 2:30-4:30 p.m.–please take note of our new\, later hours for trick or treaters:  we will gather at the Gazebo on the Town Green to start our Pumpkin Parade and begin the trick or treating at 2:30 p.m.\, and ending at 4:30 p.m. this year. \nAlso new this year\, Old Ridgefield Rd. will be closed\, from Center St. to Godfrey Ln.\, in order to make sure the hundreds of costumed trick or treaters\, and their families and pets can scurry safely around town to collect treats from our generous retailers\, businesses and vendors! \nThe Wilton Chamber thanks Title Sponsor Kimco Realty and event sponsor Fairfield County Bank for supporting this popular weekend of events.

DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Halloween in a fun\, non-scary way at Wilton Congregational Church’s annual Trunk or Treat.
