SUMMARY:New Perspectives Film Series: Sneak Peek Documentary Trailer-Fest!
DESCRIPTION:New Perspectives programmer and moderator Megan Smith-Harris has watched over 200 new documentaries in preparation for the Ridgefield Independent Film Festival. She has put together a curated selection of trailers for the best-of-the-best\, soon-to-be released docs exclusively for Wilton Library. She’ll provide context and behind-the-scenes insights about each film. The audience will be canvassed about which titles they would like to see screened during the 2018/19 New Perspectives Series season\, so in essence\, everyone will become a film programmer for the evening. \nShe also will discuss the anatomy of a trailer–describing how a 90-minute film is cut to a 90-second teaser. Suggested donation:  $5. Refreshments will be served. The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker Megan Smith-Harris. A Q&A will follow the film. Registration is highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:New Perspectives Documentary Series Presents: "Poliwood"
DESCRIPTION:Terrific and timely gem of a documentary by Oscar-winning director (and New Canaan/Wilton resident!) that is fair to people on both sides of the political aisle. This thought-provoking film couldn’t come at a better time given the spirit of divisiveness that is infecting our country. \nLevinson documents the 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions and looks at the way Hollywood celebrity and political activism have become entwined. Actors Anne Hathaway\, Susan Sarandon and Sting\, among others\, are a part of the Creative Coalition\, a non-partisan group of actors and artists that promote the importance of the arts in education as they reached across party lines to make their case at both the Democratic and Republican conventions. \nWATCH THE TRAILER: \n\nThe screening is Saturday\, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wilton Library Brubeck Room. Register online or call 203.762.6334. \nThe New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker Megan Smith-Harris. Please join her for a lively Q&A following the screening. Refreshments provided. No charge: suggested donation is $5. Registration is highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Ski Film: "Hoji"
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored Event\nWatch famous skier Eric Hjorleifson in Matchstick Production’s latest film\, Hoji. Playing at the Fairfield Theatre Company\, on Tuesday\, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.. The screening includes an exclusive snowboarding film from The North Face. \nEric Hjorleifson lets his skiing speak for itself. He doesn’t stand on the bar and shout out his accolades. He skis for brands that give him 100% creative control over the equipment that he designs and uses. He chases storms. He ditches his cell phone for weeks at a time. His exploits are rarely flaunted on social media. In spite of all of this – or maybe because of it – he is a hero to legions of skiers across the globe. This is who Eric is – this is “HOJI.” Directed by Scott Gaffney and featuring Eric Hjorleifson\, Chris Rubens\, James Heim and more.

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING: Beyond Measure: What Counts Can’t Be Counted
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Youth Council and Wilton Youth Services invite Wilton residents to a special three-part series to explore the purpose of education\, the importance of childhood and our community’s opportunity to chart the best course for our children. \nThe series began in November with a screening of Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture. It continues on Monday\, Feb. 4 with a screening of the follow-up movie\, Beyond Measure. We conclude with a Community Conversation on Monday\, Feb. 25. \nEvery day we hear stories about America’s troubled education system\, and that in order to fix what’s broken\, we need to narrow curricula\, standardize classrooms\, and find new ways to measure students and teachers. But what if these “fixes” are making our schools worse? Beyond Measure offers a positive picture of what’s possible in American education when communities decide they are ready for change. \nJoin us for 80-minute film followed by a brief panel discussion. This is a free event\, open to adults and students from middle school up. \nThe documentary film Beyond Measure visits public schools across the country that put research and innovative models into practice. These groundbreaking communities are transforming what and how they teach\, and creating more equitable\, empowering and student-centered cultures from the ground up. \nFrom the makers of Race to Nowhere\, Beyond Measure and the companion book of the same name offer a positive picture of what’s possible in American education when communities decide they are ready for change. \nThere are two opportunities to participate–a morning screening and an evening screening! Both screenings will be held at Middlebrook School Auditorium. Register here: \n10 a.m. Screening \n7 p.m. Screening \nSponsored by Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services. \n

SUMMARY:"Emanuel" Movie Showing and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:On June 17\, 2015\, nine African Americans were murdered by a 21-year-old white supremacist during a prayer service at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston\, South Carolina. \nThe families of the Emanuel Nine stood in court facing the killer … and offered words of forgiveness. Their demonstration of grace ushered the way for hope and healing across a city and the nation. This documentary powerfully weaves the history of race relations in Charleston\, the significance and impact of Mother Emanuel Church\, and the hope that somehow emerges in the aftermath. \nThis is a stunning movie that came out for only two days this summer. \nThe Wilton Congregational Church will host a screening of the documentary and a discussion after. Two special guests from South Carolina whose lives were personally affected by this tragic event in history will be part of the event:  Polly Sheppard\, a survivor who was left to tell the story; and Rose Simmons\, whose father was killed in the shooting. \nYou will not want to miss seeing Emanuel\, hearing from the lives that were impacted\, and discussing what we can do as a community going forward. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Documentary: "Angst: Raising Awareness about Anxiety"
DESCRIPTION:Following high community interest in this documentary when it was shown at the recent Day of Recovery at Wilton Presbyterian Church in November 2019\, church officials have arranged a second showing of the film\, Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety\, which was created to start community conversations about anxiety and to provide tools\, resources and hope. \nOn Sunday\, Jan. 26\, Wilton Presbyterian Church will hold a special screening of the documentary in our church Lounge to open up a dialogue between local families\, community leaders and experts. The event will feature a viewing of the 56-minute film\, followed by an informative discussion led by several area therapists/mental health professionals. \nThe producers have one goal: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Through candid interviews\, they utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships\, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film also includes a special interview with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps\, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all-time. In addition\, the documentary provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects\, along with the help\, resources and tools available to address the condition. \n“Part of the beauty of this film is the openness of the children and young adults featured; for some of them\, the Angst project marks the first time they are publicly sharing their experiences with anxiety. Our hope is that their candidness and bravery will inspire our community to do the same\,” says Rev. Shannon White of WPC. The film is appropriate for ages 6th grade through adult. \nWhile “Angst” documents the struggles some people have with anxiety\, it also reveals their hope for the future. Noah\, a teenager in the film\, describes it this way:  “Anxiety doesn’t define me. It’s not just a curse; it also gives me strength.” \n“Everybody needs to know that anxiety disorders are real\, common and treatable instead of viewing them as a personal choice or something to be ashamed of\,” said Dr. Jerry Bubrick\, senior director of the Anxiety Disorders Center\, Child Mind Institute. “Getting help early is crucial in giving people the tools they need to feel better. We just need to start the conversation.” \nAnxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S.\, impacting 54% of females and 46% of males\, with age seven being the median age of onset\, according to the World Health Organization. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable\, only one-third of those suffering receive treatment. Everyone involved in the development of “Angst” has a personal experience with anxiety–from the producers to the interviewees. \n“The conversation surrounding mental health really hits home for me\,” said the well-known athlete Phelps. “Many people don’t understand how debilitating mental illness truly can be\, and even more than that\, how common it is\, yet people are afraid to have the serious discussions about it. I welcomed the opportunity to be a part of Angst to further the dialogue around mental health and to help people understand the impact anxiety has on our mental state and encourage people\, especially kids\, to ask for help.” \nThis film and reception is funded by a grant from the Presbyterian Church\, Mental Health Ministries. The grant was given to Wilton Presbyterian Church last year and also funded the Day of Recovery last November. \nFree tickets are now available and space is limited! The screening will be held at Wilton Presbyterian Church at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 26. Tickets can be reserved online. \nContact Shannon White via email with any questions.

SUMMARY:MOVIE SCREENING: "Like" – The Impact of Social Media On Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:Join a coalition of child development and education organizations for a screening of LIKE\, a new IndieFlix original documentary film that explores the impact of social media on our lives. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, licensed clinical psychologist\, and Chris Parrott\, BPS\, chartered counseling psychologist–two popular speakers on the topic of managing the impact of digital devices and content. \nTechnology is a tool that’s here to stay and social media platforms are places to connect\, share and care. But what’s really happening? \nFifty-seven percent of all teens agree that using social media often distracts them when they should be doing homework. Twenty percent of teen drivers say they check notifications while driving\, at least sometimes. And 57% of teens say that if parents knew what happens on social media\, they’d be a lot more worried about it. \nSo\, are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain\, on our lives and on our civilization\, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together. \nThe goal of the documentary film LIKE is “to inspire people of all ages\, especially kids\, to self-regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other.” \nPlease email Genevieve Eason with questions. \nSponsored By:  Fusion Academy Fairfield\, SPED*NET Wilton\, Wilton High School PTSA\, Wilton Public Schools and Wilton Youth Council
