DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Diwali\, the festival of lights\, Middlebrook 8th graders and HindiUSA are organizing a SewaDiwali Food Donation Drive on Saturday\, Nov. 1\, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.\, outside the Wilton Stop & Shop\, inviting the community to give back by supporting families in need. \nThe event is part of the nationwide SewaDiwali initiative\, a grassroots movement that brings together individuals and organizations to serve the community during the festive season. They will be collecting non-perishable food items that will be donated to local food pantries across Fairfield County. \nDiwali is a time to celebrate with family and friends\, but also a time to reflect on our values of compassion and service. By organizing this food drive\, these students hope to foster togetherness and Sewa (selfless giving) for the welfare of society\, by promoting the festive and enlightening spirit of Diwali. \nCommunity members are encouraged to donate items such as canned goods\, rice\, pasta\, cereal\, shelf-stable milk and other essential food products. Donations can be dropped off at the collection site located outside Stop & Shop (5 River Rd.) between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Nov. 1.

DESCRIPTION:The Kiwanis Club of Wilton is adapting its quarterly food drive that supports the Wilton Food Pantry\, to make sure COVID-19 doesn’t interfere with the club’s efforts. Instead of asking for actual food items\, members will be in front of Village Market this weekend (Friday-Sunday\, June 26-28) asking shoppers to consider donating gift cards that can be purchased in-store at the cash register. \nCustomers can then deposit them upon leaving the store in a special box provided by a designated member of the Kiwanis Club. This process aligns with pandemic social distancing\, and subsequent distribution is simplified. \nKiwanis members will be in front of the Village Market between the hours of 11 a.m.-5 p.m.\, under the banner of Feed Wilton; in response to COVID-19 physical contact will be minimized\, and the focus will be on gift card donations to serve those who are food insecure within our community. Kiwanis will match the first $3\,000 of the proceeds.

DESCRIPTION:Letter carriers in Wilton are delivering grocery bags and shopping lists to all postal customers in advance of the annual Wilton Postal Food Drive on Saturday\, Nov. 2. \nWith 11% of people living in Fairfield County struggling with food insecurity–including more than 14% of children who don’t know where their next meal is coming from–the Person-to-Person Food Pantry is a critical resource for our neighbors in Wilton\, Westport\, Weston and Norwalk. \nWilton residents are encouraged to leave a bag of non-perishable groceries at their mailbox this Saturday morning or drop it off at the Wilton Post Office on Hubbard Rd.. The Person-to-Person pantry is currently in need of items such as hearty soups\, pasta and sauce\, canned beans and tuna\, jelly and peanut butter. In the event of rain or other inclement weather\, please protect your donations in a plastic bag.

SUMMARY:Wi-ACT Rise Against Hunger Volunteer Meal-Packaging Event
DESCRIPTION:Each year members of the Wilton community come together to participate in one of the most gratifying\, heartfelt volunteer efforts\, the Wilton Interfaith Action Committee‘s (WI-ACT) Rise Against Hunger Meal-Packaging Event. \nThis year’s meal packaging falls on Saturday\, Oct. 19\, when 700 Wilton volunteers will come together to work across four\, two-hour shifts over the course of a very full day\, to make a difference in the lives of children living in food insecurity around the world. \nIn full\, over the seven previous years of this event\, Wilton has packaged more than 1\,000\,000 meals\, each one providing a highly nutritious meal in a compact package. What’s more\, the program nourishes children in mind as well as body\, as recipient children are fed in educational settings\, helping contribute toward breaking the cycle of poverty and malnutrition. \nWilton Rise Against Hunger volunteers also help meet food sufficiency needs here locally as well\, by bringing non-perishable food items to the event for local food pantries. \nFor this year’s event\, Wi-ACT has set the same goal as last year of 150\,000 meals to be packaged in one day\, but financing for the bulk ingredients to meet that goal has become a bigger challenge this year. WI-ACT pays for the meal components in advance from the organizer\, highly rated nonprofit Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. at a cost of 31 cents per meal. That’s a bargain for these highly nutritious meals that feed over 400 children (at the 150\,000-meal level) for every day of an entire year but that price is an increase of two cents per meal over previous years and presents a major part of the financial challenge of again reaching the 150\,000-meal level\, to the total of $3\,000. \nA new feature of this year’s event will be a 40-ft. ocean-going container on site at the WEPCO Church Complex (36 New Canaan Rd.) where the meal-packaging is done. Some meals will already be pre-loaded from other events\, but the majority of the meals it will contain are to be from this Wilton event. Once the Wilton event ends and all of the meals packaged that day in Wilton have been loaded\, the container will be sealed and immediately driven dockside to be loaded on a ship and delivered\, most likely to Somalia. \nAnyone who would like to volunteer for meal-packaging is welcome to participate. Individuals and families (with members as young as 7-years-old who take on the very important “runner” responsibility\, up to senior citizens) can join in the work to make it an uplifting and exciting full-family experience! Interested participants can sign up for a shift online. \nOrganizers are asking for community members to consider donating to help pay for the bulk ingredients so that Wi-ACT can hit the goal of 150\,000 meals. All funds raised go to pay for those bulk ingredients. Donations can be by check made payable to “Rise Against Hunger\, Inc.” noting “Wilton CT event” on the memo line\, and should be mailed to 6 Glen Hill Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or donated directly to Rise Against Hunger for this Wilton event at a Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. website dedicated for the Wilton event.

DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Congregational Church as it partners with Person-to-Person as part of its P2P Mobile Food Pantry Campaign. The P2P truck will be on-site and will hopefully be filled with donated non-perishable food items when it departs! \nHot Dogs from Chez Lenard and ice cream from College Creamery will be available for purchase\, so stop by for some food\, fellowship and face painting. Parking is available at Wilton Playshop (Lovers Ln.) and behind Old Town Hall (Belden Hill Rd.). For those who can’t stay\, there will be a convenient drive-through drop-off for any food pantry donations located in the parking lot at the corner of Old Ridgefield Rd. and Ridgefield Rd.. \nHope to see everyone there–the event is rain or shine!
