SUMMARY:Connecticut Historic Gardens Day at Weir Farm
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Connecticut’s Historic Gardens Day at Weir Farm National Historic Site\, where gardens and art go hand-in-hand. Weir Farm National Historic Site\, the only national park dedicated to American painting\, is a proud member of Connecticut’s Historic Gardens\, an organization committed to preserving and promoting historic gardens throughout Connecticut. \nFormer Weir Farm artist-in-residence Bonnie Beers Johnson won this year’s annual Historic Gardens Day Poster Art Contest and will be at the park with her original work. Come view the winning painting\, Weir Farm Peonies\, and learn more about the stunning historic gardens that have been inspiring artists for over a century. Park staff and Garden Gang volunteers will offer short informal talks in the Sunken Garden and Secret Garden about each garden’s history\, flowers\, restoration\, and ongoing preservation. \nIn addition to the talks\, visitors can spend an afternoon painting en plain air in the gardens using the park’s free-to-use watercolor supplies. Instructor Bobbi Eike Mullen will be available to provide tips on watercolor painting. Join us for a fun-filled Historic Gardens Day!

SUMMARY:Conservation Commission Walk–Quarry Head State Park
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission\, in collaboration with the Wilton Garden Club\, Norwalk River Watershed Association\, and Wilton Land Conservation Trust (WLCT) will offer a guided walk in Quarry Head State Park on Sunday\, June 24 at 1 p.m.. Quarry Head is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Town of Wilton. The walk will include the adjacent Harrison-Smith property\, owned by WLCT. \nThe walk\, to be led by one of the Conservation commissioners\, will follow the newly installed trail-work addressing erosion of one hillside. Designed and implemented by volunteers\, this pathway also improves the ease of climbing that hill and provides clearer guidance for hikers in this area of the park. Attendees will also see the “deer exclosure” established about a decade ago as an experiment to assess impact on the understory when deer are kept away from the plants growing beneath the tree canopy. \nFollowing the walk\, there will be refreshments and time to ask questions and to visit with neighbors and representatives of the organizations sponsoring the walk. \nQuarry Head Park is located on Ridgefield Rd./Rte. 33\, north\, just south of Millstone Rd.. A narrow driveway leads into the park and there are parking spaces once at the end of the driveway. The driveway will be marked with balloons\, as the post and sign indicating its location was damaged by winter storms. \nThe walk will begin near the ruins of a former home on the property at the picnic table overlooking Long Island Sound. The Commission recommends attendees wear long pants tucked into socks and long sleeved shirt. All are welcome\, including dogs on leash. \nThose who pre-register at conservationevent@wiltonct.org will be contacted should weather require postponement of the walk. \nALSO\, SAVE THE DATE! Details of another walk\, to be held July 8 at 10 a.m. at Weir Farm to be led by Weir Farm staff\, will be announced shortly.

SUMMARY:Conservation Commission Park Walk at Weir Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join the Conservation Commission at Weir Farm National Historic Site for a leisurely walk to explore the beautiful and historic meadows\, forest and pond that have inspired artists for over 135 years. Park ranger Amanda Lord will lead a one-hour guided walk during which she will introduce you to Julian Alden Weir\, a world-class artist who lived and worked here from 1882 to 1919. We will walk in his footsteps through the landscape that inspired his Impressionist paintings. Our gentle hike will take us by historic stone walls and natural wonders\, as we make our way to Weir Pond\, which was added by Weir in 1896 as a place for fishing and recreation. Dogs on leash are welcome. Please watch for a park ranger in a reflective vest who will direct you to the parking area for the program. \nFollowing the walk\, there will be refreshments and time to ask questions\, chat with neighbors and the Conservation Commissioners in attendance. To guarantee you are contacted should there be inclement weather\, please\npre-register at conservationevent@wiltonct.org. \nAbout Weir Farm National Historic Site\nVisit the home and studio of America’s most beloved Impressionist\, J. Alden Weir\, and walk in the footsteps of a world-class artist. Set against a rural Connecticut landscape that has been painted by thousands of artists from 1882 to the present\, Weir Farm is a national legacy of American Impressionism and the creative spirit. Explore this National Park for the Arts and experience what Weir described as “the great good place.”
