DESCRIPTION:browngrotta arts presents its Spring 2022 Art in the Barn exhibition\, Crowdsourcing the Collective: survey of textile and mixed media art this May. Crowdsourcing will be documented in a full-color catalog (our 51st). Join us on Saturday\, May 7 for the Opening and Artists Reception or during the rest of the week\, May 8-15. \nThe 42 artists from 12 countries included in Crowdsourcing the Collective: a survey of textile and mixed media art illustrate the vitality of art textiles\, ceramics and mixed media. The new prominence of these art forms finds them the subject of exhibitions in major museums\, intermixed with paintings and traditional sculpture in ways unthinkable a decade ago. Many of the artists in Crowdsourcing began working in the ‘80s and ’90s\, when craft and fiber art were not well recognized; some have been working since fiber art’s first heyday in the ‘60s and ’70s. \nThe exhibition reflects an astonishing range of materials and techniques\, tapestries of silk and agave\, sculptures of seaweed\, seagrass and willow\, wall works made of sandpaper\, hemp and horsehair\, and ceramics of Shigaraki clay will all be included. The scope of these artists’ preoccupations is on view here\, too — from environmental concerns\, to questions of the cosmos and identity\, to explorations of material and process. It includes new work\, works from earlier periods\, and work from artists we have invited specifically for this exhibition. SUMMARY:Exhibitions Reception at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 19\, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold a reception to celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions. \nCommitment to Community: The Lives of Laurent Clerc and Francis Clerc Ogden is developed in partnership with the American School for the Deaf\, and explores the lives of two men\, Laurent Clerc and his great-grandson Francis Clerc Ogden. Clerc\, a co-founder of the American School for the Deaf\, spent his life working to make education accessible for deaf students\, including recruiting other trailblazing educators developing sign language. Ogden\, a Wilton resident for nearly 70 years\, was involved in countless town organizations and projects\, including helping to found the Wilton Historical Society. This exhibit will examine the work both men did in service to others and the fortuitous circumstances that brought two organizations together. \nThe Town Book: E. Boyd Smith’s 20th Century Wilton takes a deeper look at Wilton during the early 20th century\, a time of radical transformation for the town\, through the work of a resident who witnessed it firsthand\, E. Boyd Smith. Smith was a children’s book author and illustrator\, and along with his wife Mary\, was an active member of the community. Smith’s illustrations were directly inspired by the scenes he saw as he traveled around Wilton\, often including landmarks familiar to his fellow residents. His books capture a lifestyle that was rapidly disappearing and made it accessible to young readers. The exhibition will display Smith’s art alongside objects from the museum’s collection to offer different perspectives on Wilton’s evolution during the first half of the 1900’s. Funding for this exhibition was provided by Connecticut Humanities. \nThe reception is open to the public at no charge.

This February show features several artists who have made such inquiries. Thus\, the topic of questions regarding art seemed like a natural theme for the show. \nEach artist provided the library with questions about their art: what they hope viewers will contemplate when considering the work\, what they typically ask themself when creating\, or what their own questions are as a viewer. Those thoughts will be shared as part of the exhibit\, and the community is invited to think about their queries when viewing the works. \nThese pieces represent a wide variety of styles\, media\, and subject matter. DESCRIPTION:FOCUS ’25\, a collection of 211 photographs from 128 photographers (including 43 by high school students and 29 by youths)\, is on display at the Wilton Library through Apr. 23 during library hours. \nFOCUS ’25 is the 25th event organized by the Wilton Arts Council for the public to participate in sharing their photos. The photos were judged by three judges in three divisions (adult\, high school and youth). Many photos are available for sale. A reception and awards presentation will be held on Friday\, Mar. 21 from 6-7:30 p.m. The exhibit and the reception are free to the public to attend.

DESCRIPTION:Transformations: Dialogues in Art and Material (May 9-17)\, the Spring “Art in the Barn” exhibition at browngrotta arts\, will take a focused look at materiality\, examining how matter is shaped\, reconfigured\, and reimagined through skilled and thoughtful engagement. The exhibition will feature works by some three dozen international artists exploring a wide range of materials — ranging from clay\, silk\, and linen\, to cotton\, steel\, bark\, stones\, seaweed\, bamboo\, and horsehair — highlighting both the diversity of material choices and the distinct outcomes achieved even when artists work within the same medium. \nThe works on view in Transformations will underscore diversity of process and approaches.
