DESCRIPTION:Wilton’s Parks and Recreation Department is kicking off summer and showing off a refurbished Merwin Meadows by throwing a party for all Wilton residents. On Saturday\, June 16\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, Parks & Rec is hosting “Wilton Day at Merwin Meadows” and all residents are invited for free fun and festivities. With proof of Wilton residency\, attendees will be able to enjoy free food and activities for all ages. Among the fun events and features will be face painting\, music\, corn hole\, beach volleyball\, inflatables (duel-sport combo bounce house\, climbing area and slide)\, sack races\, fencing demonstrations\, playground and swings\, and of course swimming in the Merwin pond. In addition\, Parks & Rec has a new tug-of-war rope that stretches across the entire pond and teams will compete from opposite shores; the winning team is the team that pulls its entire opposing team into the pond.

This year\, features a $20\,000 Give-Away & Prize Drawing \nWilton Blue Alumni take on the Kick for Nick CT Soccer Academy. Plus\, the Wilton Soccer Association Youth play at halftime. \nBefore your Memorial Day get-togethers & BBQs start\, come to the free\, annual Memorial Day Soccer Game in remembrance of PFC Nick Madaras\, who was Killed In Action in Iraq 2006. \nWith a passion for soccer and coaching\, Nick believed a used soccer ball could make the world a better place for kids across the globe. DESCRIPTION:With Election Day Cake! \nKids 8-and-up can search the Wilton Historical Society’s historic 18th and 19th century buildings with clues in hand\, peering into corners\, lofts\, nooks and crannies of historic houses and barns. Delicious and historic Election Day Cake will be served. \nSuggested for ages 8 and up. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child per family; for non-members is $15 per family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \n“Unlike today\, in the 18th and 19th centuries\, Election Day met with great celebration. Voters came to major cities like Hartford to cast their ballots and then stayed to socialize and celebrate their democratic freedoms. Often\, city residents hosted elaborate banquets where the dessert course consisted of coffee\, hot cider\, and a generous portion of Election Cake. \n“Election Cake is a cross between bread and cake. Full of fruits and nuts\, this rich dessert became a staple of Election Day celebrations. While there are numerous variations to the recipe\, one submitted by a Mrs. Charles Flagg of Hartford in 1890 included butter\, sugar\, flour\, eggs\, baking powder\, raisins\, currants\, citron\, almonds\, vanilla\, and milk. \n“Although the cake began its association with the city of Hartford in the 1830s\, Connecticut recipes for it date back to 1771. Back then\, colonists might consume Election Cake during daylong town meetings or as a reward for their service after a long day of voting. Sometimes political party advocates handed out Election Cake to those who voted a straight ticket (voting for the same political party for every office). \n“In the early 19th century\, as the parades and balls held in Hartford became more elaborate\, Connecticut residents began identifying Election Day with the city of Hartford and the celebrations there became one of the great festivals in the state. As a result\, Election Cake soon established itself as a Hartford tradition. \n“The popularity of Election Cake got a real boost from its publication in a reprint of Amelia Simmons’s recipe book\, American Cookery\, in 1800. At a time when women faced little opportunity to display their political loyalty\, individuals like Amelia Simmons made food not only social but patriotic as well. Her recipe for Election Cake called for 30 quarts of flour\, 10 pounds of butter\, 14 pounds of sugar\, 12 pounds of raisins\, and three dozen eggs—an indication of the many mouths it was meant to feed. \n“Election Cake became the first food strongly associated with American politics. What made it more unique and important was the way it provided women with an opportunity to express their commitment to their new country. This was no trivial outlet in an era that prohibited women from voting. At halftime\, the 6/7th grade girls Wilton Hoops travel team will play an exhibition game\, followed by a raffle drawing;  100% of the proceeds from the bake sale and the raffle will benefit the American Cancer Society. \nThe team members running the event this year are Zoe Rappaport\, Katie Umphred\, and Caitlin Greef. \nAbout Coaches vs Cancer:  For over 25 years\, the Coaches vs. Cancer program\, in collaboration with the National Association of Basketball Coaches\, has united coaches and fans nationwide to help the American Cancer Society defeat a common enemy–cancer. With player passion and dedicated fan support\, the impact has been felt in communities nationwide. \nThrough fundraising and education initiatives\, the Coaches vs. Cancer program has supported the American Cancer Society in its efforts to save lives from cancer in the US and worldwide.

SUMMARY:Virtual Chess Club
DESCRIPTION:Kids in kindergarten through high school are invited to join this virtual Wilton Library chess class. Each week students will learn new strategies and then pair up using Chess.com to practice playing. Students must create a chess.com username prior to the start of class. Registration is required for each session\, there is no fee. Call 203.762.6336 or email with questions. \nMatthew Shirvell is the instructor for this class. He has been teaching chess for over five years\, from new learners to experienced tournament players. He is a USCF tournament director who has helped run events such as the 2020 Connecticut State Grade Championships with over 90 participants. Please visit Wilton Library online for more information and to register. Registrants will receive an email link to the Zoom meeting shortly before the program. \n
