SUMMARY:Sustainability in Fashion - Curating an Ethically Conscious Closet
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library and Wilton Go Green for a panel discussion of Sustainability in Fashion. Did you know that Americans throw away nearly 11.3 million tons of textile waste each year? That equates to roughly 2\,150 pieces of clothing per second. Synthetic fabrics used in fast fashion account for one-fifth of all the plastic produced globally\, exposing us to forever chemicals and filling the oceans with microplastics. The average American only wears a garment 7-10 times before throwing it away. Only a very small percentage of discarded clothing is re-used or recycled. Come explore the effects of fast fashion on the environment and vulnerable populations on a global scale. There are ways each of us can shop smarter\, lengthen the life of our clothes and commit to brands who put the welfare of their employees and the planet first. Attendees can enter a drawing for a chance to win a private shopping party with 9 friends at the Turnover Shop! Style and shopping support as well as light snacks and refreshments provided. \nOur panel discussion includes Sandra Finkelstein\, Grace Lanning\, Sharon Sobel and Savonna Bocchino. \nSandra Finkelstein\, Creative and Strategic Fashion Brand Leader\, has deep expertise in the women’s\, men’s and kids apparel industry\, with over 35 years of successfully building powerful brand concepts. Grace Lanning\, Denim and Childrenswear Designer\, has over 15 years of experience in fashion design and has worked for companies such as Chaps Ralph Lauren\, Oshkosh B’Gosh and Kal Rieman. Sharon Sobel\, President of the Turnover Shop of Wilton Inc.\, has lived in Wilton for 38 years and has been President since 1991. Savona Bocchino is a junior at Wilton High School where she leads the WHS Green Team. Her interest in fashion and dedication to sustainability motivated her to launch her own Poshmark account in 9th grade aimed at reducing consumption. \nPlease register online or call 203.762.6334. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Stephanie Kramer - Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Kramer is the author of Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work. This ‘labor’ or love was written over three years late at night and during her children’s naps because of her desire to create a groundswell of support. With original research and hundreds of inspiring interviews\, she does just that— sharing five powerful principles to find perspective\, create your balance\, cultivate community\, communicate your needs\, and embrace your shift in identity throughout each phase of pregnancy\, starting with the moment you decide you want to become a working mom-to-be. In Carry Strong\, Kramer flips the script. This isn’t about powering through pregnancy at work. It’s about being powerful and pregnant at work. \nKramer is a tenured beauty industry executive today serving as the Chief Human Resources Officer of L’Oréal USA in New York City and an adjunct professor of management communication in the graduate business program at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is the proud mother of two young children and deeply believes that you can do it all\, not at the same time\, and absolutely not alone. \nThis author talk is co-sponsored by the Wilton Woman’s Club. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website or call 203.762.6350.

SUMMARY:Reshaping Reality: Middle Schoolers in the Mirror
DESCRIPTION:The Reshaping Reality Club at Wilton High School\, in collaboration with Eating Disorder Coach Oriana Laflamme\, invite you to “Middle Schoolers in the Mirror”\, a program at Wilton Library aimed at educating middle school students about the challenges surrounding body image\, eating disorders\, and other related issues. SUMMARY:Health & Wellness Fair
DESCRIPTION:The number of students with mental health concerns has continued to rise over the last few years. This reached its pinnacle in October 2020 when the American Academy of Pediatrics\, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry\, and the Children’s Hospital Association jointly urged The White House to issue a National State of Emergency in child and adolescent mental health. \nAs a community we must also do our part. This is why Wilton High School has decided to host its very first Health & Wellness Fair during Mental Health Awareness Month. The event is sponsored by the Hope Squad\, a new club at Wilton High School. \nThe Hope Squad is a national organization with clubs at thousands of high schools across the country. The Hope Squad’s mission is to reduce youth suicide through education\, training\, and peer intervention. During the fair\, students and parents will have access to a variety of different resources. There will be booths promoting mental health\, nutrition\, exercise\, and more. \nThe Health & Wellness Fair will be held on Tuesday\, May 23 in the Zellner Gallery at Wilton High School.

SUMMARY:Orchestrating Change
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Youth Council and Wilton Library invite you to the screening of the documentary film Orchestrating Change.  The film features beautiful music while being informative\, uplifting\, sometimes humorous and most importantly\, empowering.  Orchestrating Change tells the inspiring story of the only orchestra created by and for people living with mental illness and those who support them. \nRonald Braunstein was on the trajectory to becoming one of the world’s leading conductors until he made his diagnosis of bipolar disorder public and was shunned by the classical music community. He decided to create an orchestra for people like him with the mission of erasing mental health stigma one concert at a time. The film follows Braunstein and several of the musicians for two years\, capturing their setbacks and their accomplishments. The musicians’ stories are told entirely in their own words\, augmented with striking animation. The film culminates in a joyous concert at a major venue. It is a triumph for Braunstein\, who thought he might never conduct again. \nSeen across the United States on public television stations\, the film is the 2021 winner of the Austen Riggs Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media. The American Library Association & Media Round Table voted it “One of the Top Twelve 2022 Notable Films for Adults.” \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website.
