SUMMARY:More than a Pastime: The Evolution of Tourism in Wilton and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society on Thursday\, June 18 at 7 p.m. for a presentation by Prof. Eric Zuelow exploring the history of travel and tourism in Wilton and as a global phenomenon. \nTourism is far more than a pastime. It is an economic engine\, a source of cultural propaganda\, a pathway to self-improvement and healthfulness\, and a shaper of identities. It fueled the reformation of landscapes\, was utilized to various ends by political regimes of all stripes\, and perhaps most of all\, helped to convince all of us that we desperately “need a vacation.” How and why did all of this happen? Travel\, regardless of conveyance\, is often arduous\, so what drew people to travel for fun? How and why did tastes change over time? This lecture will trace the evolution of tourism globally\, while illustrating how much larger changes impacted the people of Wilton. \nZuelow (University of New England) is among the leading historians of modern tourism. He is author or editor of six books\, including A History of Modern Tourism (Palgrave\, 2015) and the Oxford Handbook of Tourism History (Oxford University Press\, 2025)\, as well as editor of Journal of Tourism History.

SUMMARY:The Importance of Connecticut to the Revolution with Mike Allen
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut played an outsized role in winning U.S. independence from the British Empire. Prominent historical figures contributed to the formation of the new country\, while Connecticut earned the nickname “the provision state” because of its supplies of food and ammunition to the Continental Army. \nMilitary actions in Danbury\, Ridgefield\, Saugatuck\, Groton\, New London\, New Haven\, Greenwich\, Norwalk\, and Fairfield were significant. \nRoger Sherman\, Israel Putnam\, Jonathan Trumbull\, Benedict Arnold\, Noah Webster\, and others played critical roles\, while other notable figures visited the state during the Revolutionary War years: George Washington\, French General Rochambeau\, John Hancock\, and more. \nThe Connecticut Compromise broke a stalemate in the Continental Congress and allowed progress to continue forming the Constitution. \nNoted storyteller and journalist Mike Allen\, former host of the popular podcast Amazing Tales About History\, will walk through the key people and events in Connecticut during our nation’s tumultuous march to independence\, 250 years ago. \nThe talk will be held on Thursday\, April 30\, at 7:00 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society (224 Danbury Road in Wilton).\nThe event is free for Historical Society members. For non-members\, there is a $10.00 fee. \nRegistration required. \nThis event is sponsored by ASML.

SUMMARY:Feeding the Body Politic: Culinary Satire and the Print Market in an Age of Revolution Lecture and Food Tasting at The Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:Food has long carried political meaning\, and its significance in revolutionary America is no exception. Join art and culinary historian Nancy Siegel for a lecture and historic food tasting which investigates a distinct genre of culinary-inspired satirical prints produced by artists sympathetic to the plight of American colonists. Imagine King George III placing a fleet of ships in an oven about to be baked like gingerbread\, the Prince of Wales gorging himself on the fortunes of Empire\, the American colonies represented as a kettle of fish\, exploding teapots—visual metaphors that spoke to the conditions and events that eventually dismantled the British Empire: non-importation movements in the American colonies\, complex trade embargoes\, protests over taxation\, the anti-saccharite movement that called for boycotts of sugar from the West Indies produced by enslaved laborers\, and—ultimately—Revolution. \nAbout Nancy Siegel: \nNancy Siegel is Assistant Dean and Professor of Art History & Culinary History at Towson University\, where she specializes in American landscape studies\, underrepresented women artists of the 19th century\, print culture\, and culinary history of the 18th and 19th centuries. She provides historical cooking demonstrations\, tastings\, and lectures widely on landscape and food histories in addition to serving as an art and culinary consultant for museums and non-profit institutions. This lecture is based upon her forthcoming book\, Political Appetites: The Power of Food in Revolutionary America (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2026) available now for preorders and the documentary Feeding the Revolution (WMHT). \nThe talk will be held on Sunday\, Apr. 26th\, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society.\nAdmission is $25 non-members\, $15 for members of the Wilton Historical Society. \nThis program is sponsored by ASML \nRegister online

SUMMARY:America 250: Abigail Adams\, America's First Modern Woman\, as Told by Her Husband John Adams
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the 250th anniversary commemorating the American Revolution and the signing of our Declaration of Independence\, the month of March – designated as National Women’s History Month – is a fitting time to celebrate Abigail Adams\, a woman ahead of her time\, as told by her husband John Adams\, portrayed by George Baker. Please join the Wilton Library for this inspiring performance on Thursday\, Mar. 12\, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. \nSince 2008\, George Baker has portrayed the character of President John Adams in a one-man show throughout the country. He speaks with admiration\, humor\, and affection about his wife\, Abigail\, the “First Modern American Woman\,” describing how she defied the sexist conventions of her time\, that married women could not own property\, yet\, with her amazing financial skills and insights\, made the Adams family prosperous. She helped John found the new nation\, advised him in important political affairs\, and raised their son\, John Quincy Adams\, to be prepared to ultimately become Ambassador to Great Britain\, Secretary of State\, and finally President of the United States. It is a story about their romance\, challenges\, trials\, and accomplishments\, which is the story of ordinary people living in extraordinary times. \nGeorge Baker: \nGeorge Baker has portrayed the character of President John Adams in a one-man show throughout the country at national conventions and venues like Mystic Seaport\, the Presidential Libraries of Harry S Truman\, Dwight D. Eisenhower\, and George H. W. Bush\, and the New York Historical Society\, and was featured as John Adams on NPR‘s weekend program\, Studio 360. George is a graduate of Columbia College and Columbia Law School\, and practiced law in Connecticut from 1973-2024. \nRegistration is requested.  Register online\, or call (203) 762-6334. \nRegistration will close on March 12\, 2026 at 5:00pm.

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Documentary Screening: The Hidden History of Slavery in New York
DESCRIPTION:The Hidden History of Slavery in New York digs deeply into an infamous chapter in our country that hasn’t always made its way into the history books. The film features Bryan Stevenson\, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative\, and explores how the Transatlantic trade of enslaved people was centered in the north\, not the south\, in the 17th and 18th century — with New Amsterdam as its epicenter — and Wall Street as its largest market. Journalist Larry Epstein wrote\, produced and researched the project\, which won an award at the 67th annual NY Emmy Awards. \nOn Thursday\, Jan. 22\, at 7 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society\, Epstein will present this film along with a Q&A session afterwards. \nEpstein is a two-time Emmy award-winning documentary and news producer\, journalist\, writer\, anchor and corporate copywriter. He is a former executive producer at MSNBC and former senior-level producer at the Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. \nSpace is limited and registration is required. The cost to attend is $10 per person for non-members\, free for Wilton Historical Society members.
