The festival will also include live music\, historically inspired games and crafts\, face painting\, and more! Live music provided by The Mojo Rhythm Kings and Rubberband. \nThe food trucks that will be at the festival are: Cousins Maine Lobster\, Greek Style Grill\, The Chamo\, Layla’s Falafel\, Los Poblanos\, Chef Jeffs BBQ\, Silver Sands Pizza\, Retreat Sweets\, Foolproof Brewery\, Barrelsmith Cocktails\, Italian Ices of CT\, Lucky Dog\, Simply Smashed and Wilton Outback Steakhouse. \nAll proceeds from admissions go directly to the Wilton Historical Society’s mission to preserve Wilton’s history\, and connect\, engage and educate all who would look to the past to shape the future. \nTickets are available to purchase ahead of time and at the event day-of! SUMMARY:Working for the Revolution: Patriot Women’s Lives During the War
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society on Thursday\, Jun. 4 at 7 p.m. for a presentation by professor emerita and publisher Kathy Hermes. The talk will explore how women contributed to the American Revolutionary effort politically\, economically\, intellectually and even militarily. Using original sources like newspapers\, court records\, letters and pension records\, Hermes will show how Indigenous\, Anglo-European and African-descended women all helped to further the Patriot cause. \nHermes is the publisher and executive director of Connecticut Explored magazine\, a non-profit history publication produced for readers interested in Connecticut’s past. She is professor emerita of history at Central Connecticut State University\, where she taught early American history for 25 years. She has created and been involved with a number of digital public history projects\, including Forgotten Voices of the Revolutionary War: People of Color and the Redding Encampment\, 1778-1779. \nThe talk will be held on Thursday\, Jun. 4 at the Wilton Historical Society at 7 p.m. The event is free for Historical Society members; for non-members\, there is a $10 fee.

SUMMARY:More than a Pastime: The Evolution of Tourism in Wilton and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society on Thursday\, June 18 at 7 p.m. for a presentation by Prof. Eric Zuelow exploring the history of travel and tourism in Wilton and as a global phenomenon. \nTourism is far more than a pastime. It is an economic engine\, a source of cultural propaganda\, a pathway to self-improvement and healthfulness\, and a shaper of identities. It fueled the reformation of landscapes\, was utilized to various ends by political regimes of all stripes\, and perhaps most of all\, helped to convince all of us that we desperately “need a vacation.” How and why did all of this happen? Travel\, regardless of conveyance\, is often arduous\, so what drew people to travel for fun? How and why did tastes change over time? This lecture will trace the evolution of tourism globally\, while illustrating how much larger changes impacted the people of Wilton. \nZuelow (University of New England) is among the leading historians of modern tourism. He is author or editor of six books\, including A History of Modern Tourism (Palgrave\, 2015) and the Oxford Handbook of Tourism History (Oxford University Press\, 2025)\, as well as editor of Journal of Tourism History.

As Faith carries a petition through the graveyard\, visitors encounter the men and women whose courage\, sacrifice and determination helped shape the future of Wilton. \nAlong the way\, historical figures emerge from among the stones to share their stories\, hopes and struggles. Meet farmers\, families\, community leaders\, and ministers whose lives were intertwined with the effort to build a church and create a stronger identity for a growing settlement. Through moving performances and the atmospheric setting of the cemetery itself\, history comes vividly to life around you. \nBlending authentic local history with immersive storytelling\, The Petition of Faith offers a unique opportunity to walk alongside the founders of Wilton and witness the events that led to the creation of the Wilton Congregational Church nearly 300 years ago. \nThis immersive theatrical experience is brought to you through the collaborate efforts of the Wilton Historical Society\, Wilton Congregational Church and ArtSynergy Productions. \nArtSynergy Productions creates immersive\, site-specific theatrical experiences that transform non-traditional venues into living stages. By blending storytelling\, environment and audience participation\, we create meaningful shared experiences that celebrate local history\, foster human connection\, and bring communities together through the power of live theater. \nPerformances will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday\, June 20. SUMMARY:Music During The Revolution
DESCRIPTION:This year we commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution! Join us at the Wilton Historical Society on Wednesday\, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. for a presentation about music during the Revolution by Christine Hauck. \nHauck is a visual arts educator\, lecturer\, multimedia artist and award-winning designer. Through her graffeast studio\, she creates marketing\, branding and collateral materials. She holds an M.A. in History of Decorative Arts and Curatorial Studies from Parsons School of Design and the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum; a degree in Graphics and Advertising from Parsons School of Design\, including a postgraduate seminar in Japan; and a B.A. in Art History from Vassar College. She was formerly an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut in Digital Media. \nThis lecture will focus on the American Revolutionary Era (1763–1783) and what the residents of Wilton in 1776 would have been listening to at the time. Hauck will share her research journey to identify the top composers or music makers of the area and the types of music popular in 1776 from patriotic and marching songs to social and dance music\, to psalms and symphonies. \nRegistration is required. Wilton Historical Society members can attend for free\, non-members are $10.

SUMMARY:Emancipation and Freedom: People of African Descent and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The historical importance of the American War of Independence for Black Americans is unquestionable. The number of Black men who served in the military during this war is between 5\,000 and 10\,000. But how do we remember and memorialize Black Patriots and history makers from that era? What lenses do we look through to see them? What narrative structure do we use to talk about the past they experienced? What parameters do we use for framing that narrative? And how does it relate to the more well-known narrative? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this virtual presentation by Dr. Robert Bellinger from the Wilton Historical Society. \nBellinger is a public historian with a Ph.D. in history from Boston College. As the proprietor of Righting Histories\, Bellinger engages in projects that involve research and interpretation of African American history\, local histories and historic sites. \nBellinger has been engaged as a researcher\, advisor or consultant on several public history projects including the National Park Service project “The Experience of Africans During the American Revolution;” the development of a Black History Trail in Concord\, MA; “Harvesting Heritage\,” an upcoming exhibit at South Carolina State Museum; and “Conversations of Freedom\,” the 250th anniversary exhibit at Middleton Place\, Charleston\, SC. \nIn 2021 Bellinger founded the African Seed Exchange (ASÉ) which documents the introduction of African food crops into North America by Africans and African Americans in South Carolina from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Currently Bellinger is completing a manuscript on the history of the Black residents of Lexington\, MA\, 1690-1820. Working with the Lexington History Museums this text will help expand the interpretation of the history of this Massachusetts community. \nBellinger serves on the boards of the Robbins House\, the Shirley-Eustis House\, Rediscover Mapledale\, the Slave Legacy History Coalition\, Lexington History Museums\, and Middleton Place in Charleston\, SC. Bellinger is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution\, the Massachusetts Historical Society\, the Colonial Society of Massachusetts\, and the African America Historical and Genealogical Society. \nThe talk will be held virtually on Thursday\, Sept. 10\, at 7 p.m. \nThe event is free for Historical Society members. For non-members\, there is a $10 fee.

Join the Wilton Historical Society for a panel discussion from local historians and first hand experts in exploring the various industries\, inventions and innovations that have come out of Wilton. From early cottage industries like horse-hair screens and carriage-making to high tech advancements\, find out what makes Wilton a unique home for technology. \nThis panel discussion will follow the stories of three companies: the Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Co.\, the precision optics of PerkinElmer to ASML\, and Cannondale Bicycle. \nJoining us in discussion will be Wilton Historical Society Director Nick Foster\, ASML Fellow Chip Mason\, tech policy lecturer Bill Bonvillian\, and Cannondale Director of R&D and Testing Curtis Detwiler. \nThe talk will be held on Thursday\, Sept. 24 at the Wilton Historical Society at 6 p.m. The event is free for Historical Society members; for non-members\, there is a $10 fee. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Wilton Library.

SUMMARY:Iconoclasm in Wilton: The Revolutionary-era Statue of King George III
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society on Wednesday\, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. for a presentation by University of Delaware professor Wendy Bellion that will explore the 1776 tearing down of the King George statue and Wilton’s direct role in the historic events that followed. \nOn the night of July 9\, 1776\, a crowd emboldened by a public reading of the Declaration of Independence pulled a huge equestrian statue of George III from its pedestal at Bowling Green in lower Manhattan. A British officer conveyed the decapitated head to London\, intending to demonstrate the patriots’ defiance\, and soldiers transported the remaining fragments via Wilton to Litchfield\, where the statue was melted down and recast as ammunition for Continental soldiers. En route\, loyalists in Wilton absconded with pieces of the statue\, concealing them in fields\, swamps and cellars. This talk revisits this dramatic episode of the American Revolution and explores its lesser-known afterlife in the 19th- and 20th century\, when the fragments re-emerged as historical relics and re-enactors recreated the lost statue — only to destroy it all over again. \nBellion is Professor of Art History and Sewell C. Biggs Chair in American Art at the University of Delaware. Her scholarship focuses on the art and material culture of the 18th- and 19th-century Atlantic world and the early modern Americas. Her most recent publications include the books Iconoclasm in New York: Revolution to Reenactment (2019); Citizen Spectator: Art\, Illusion and Visual Perception in Early National America (2011)\, which was awarded the Smithsonian Institution’s Eldredge Prize; and the co-edited volume Material Cultures of the Global Eighteenth Century: Art\, Mobility\, and Change (2023). Her current research explores the women of the family of artist Charles Willson Peale. \nThe event is free for Historical Society members and $10 for non-members.
