Mark your calendars for Saturday\, Sept. 20\, from 12-4 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society. \n“Once Upon a Time” features an afternoon of entertainment for the whole family. Visitors can join read-alouds of historical fiction books led by high school students to learn about life in the past. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view many of the Historical Society’s exciting exhibits\, such as Connecticut’s History\, Wilton’s Story\, an exhibit that shows how Wilton has evolved from a small New England agricultural village to today’s rich\, suburban environment. When not listening to read-alouds in the Historical Society’s various period rooms or viewing artifacts from Wilton’s past\, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy delicious seasonal treats while doing fun\, historically-themed activities. \nThis is a free\, drop-in event! SUMMARY:How Revolutionary: Fairfield County and the War for Independence Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Creating the United States of America was a radical act. The American Revolution\, from 1776 to today\, serves as a symbol of bold political action and the creation of a government based on new\, enlightened ideas. But was it truly revolutionary? The new country that emerged after the War for Independence did separate itself from a European monarchy\, but society in many ways looked much the same before\, during\, and after the United States was established. \nIn this lecture\, Wilton Historical Society Director Nick Foster uses archival evidence related to Fairfield County’s role in the Revolution to explore how radical America’s fight for independence truly was. Wilton\, like many surrounding communities\, experienced conflict between Patriots and Loyalists\, the harsh realities of war\, and difficult decisions about self-governance. The responses to these challenges present a more nuanced idea of “revolution”. \nThe lecture will be held at the Wilton Historical Society from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday\, Apr. 24. \nRegistration online is required. While no social media existed in the late 19th century\, people considered a balance of form\, function and social expectations when putting together an outfit. \nOn Saturday\, Apr. 19\, at 2 p.m.\, join the Wilton Historical Society for a lecture from historical costume designer and fashion historian Jessica Bolduc as they discuss what it took for someone in the Victorian era to get dressed and ready for the day. The lecture will cover the evolving nature of fashion throughout the second half of the 1800s using examples from the Wilton Historical Society’s museum collection as well as recreations from Bolduc. \nFunding for this program is provided by the Elizabeth Raymond Ambler Trust. \nThe lecture will be held at the Wilton Historical Society. DESCRIPTION:Join WSHU reporter Davis Dunavin in the Brubeck Room at Wilton Library for exciting tales about Pirate History in the Northeast. Famous pirates like Captain Kidd and Black Sam Bellamy sailed through the waters around New York and New England\, having unusual adventures and meeting surprising (and occasionally grisly) fates. Dunavin traveled in their footsteps last year\, exploring pirate history for the podcast Off the Path. He’ll share stories of sunken treasure\, dramatic battles and more! Dunavin loves telling stories\, whether on the radio or around the campfire. An Edward R. Murrow Award-winning and Peabody Award-nominated journalist\, he is the host of WSHU’s Off the Path and created and hosted the 2022 series Still Newtown. He also teaches classes in media studies at Sacred Heart University. He started in Missouri and ended up in Connecticut\, which\, he’d like to point out\, is the same geographic trajectory taken by Mark Twain. Registration is suggested on the Wilton Library website.

It serves as the final resting place of many notable Wilton residents\, including Revolutionary War veterans\, pastors\, businessmen\, and town founders with familiar names like Lambert and Hurlbutt. \nCostumed reenactors along with Wilton History Room Archivist Dr. Julie Hughes\, Wilton Historical Society Director Nick Foster\, and Wilton Congregational Church Executive Administrator Pam Brown will be on hand to share the fascinating history of the cemetery\, the town\, and the select individuals interred there\, as well as the historic traditions surrounding death and burials in the 18th and 19th centuries. \nWalk begins near the main gate of Sharp Hill Cemetery. SUMMARY:Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony at Hillside Cemetary
DESCRIPTION:As they graciously do each year\, the Wilton Memorial Day Parade Committee invites all Wilton families and guests to the Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony on Monday\, May 27\, following the parade. \nThe Memorial Service will begin with opening remarks from Parade Committee Chairman Jim Newton\, followed by the National Anthem played by the WHS Band. \nIf inclement weather forces cancellation of the parade\, the remembrance ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Wilton Congregational Church (70 Ridgefield Rd.). DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society for an afternoon filled with delicious teas\, delectable bites\, gorgeous flowers and memories created with loved ones! \nThe classic Afternoon Tea is a tradition born around 1840 when members of the British aristocracy felt the need to fill the long gap between the lunch and dinner menus. Consequently\, afternoon tea accompanied by a delicate snack became a staple and symbol of both the Victorian period and the wealth of the British Empire. As the popularity of the service grew\, certain utensils\, menus\, and etiquette developed along with it. \nThe Wilton Historical Society is excited to present their very own Victorian Tea Service on May 11 from 1 – 3 p.m.. Guests will enjoy a beautifully decorated tent in the courtyard of the Society’s campus. Also find all of the classically magnificent details expected from a 19th century tea service. A Dash of Salt will provide delicious teas and bites alongside a presentation on the History of Tea with an expert from Bigelow Tea. \nWildbloom Skincare and Bigelow Tea generously sponsor this event. \nWild Roses and Blooms generously provide the flowers and arrangements. \nTickets are $60 per person for Wilton Historical Society Members; $75 per person for Non-Members.
