SUMMARY:Colonial Cookery at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:One of the most valuable tools in the Mount Vernon kitchen was Mrs. Washington’s copy of The Art of Cookery\, Made Plain and Easy; Which far exceeds any Thing of the Kind yet published… By a Lady. Martha Washington’s original copy is part of the special collections at Mount Vernon\, and includes the marvelous Peach Pir. \nPeach Pir is a dessert which takes advantage of summer’s bounty of ripe fruit. The Wilton Historical Society will hold a Colonial Cookery and Customs Workshop for Kids\, in which museum educator Lola Chen will be showing the children how to make a delicious modern spin on Peach Pir by preparing a crumb crust\, custard and fresh diced peaches. \nThe Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids workshop teaches kids a “reciept” (recipe) used in the Connecticut region. While the food is prepared\, they hear about Colonial manners\, morals and way of life. The monthly workshops feature relatively simple dishes made with local\, seasonal ingredients\, adapted for modern kitchens. All participants will sample their own cooking and take home recipe cards–as well as any leftovers! The children will learn how a Colonial kitchen would have operated\, in order to appreciate the modern conveniences we take for granted. Previous sessions have made bannock cakes\, pease porridge\, pickles\, an amulet of green peas\, apple tansey\, fairy butter\, pumpkin bread\, cranberry shortbread\, New Year’s “cakes”\, New England chowder\, hand pies\, cheese and ramp soufflé\, pea and watercress Rappahannock\, blackberry maslin\, thirded bread\, pound cake with “Oranges” juice\, maple cup custard and pepper pot soup. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Members: $10; Non-members $15. Space is limited\, please register by via email or call 203.762.7257. \nThe Wilton Historical Society\, 224 Danbury Road/Rt. 7\, Wilton\, CT 06897 www.wiltonhistorical.org

SUMMARY:Wilton Children’s Theater 2018-2019 Online Registration Closes Aug. 31
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Children’s Theater is offering registration for its school-year shows\, online now through August 31. The two shows this year are Annie\, with performances Nov. 16\, 17 and 18\, 2018 and Disney’s\nThe Little Mermaid\, with performances March 15\, 16\, and 17\, 2019. \nIn addition\, in-person registration will take place on Wednesday and Thursday\, Sept. 5 and 6\, from 5-7 p.m. in the Middlebrook Cafeteria. \nWilton Children’s Theater is truly a Wilton tradition; founded in 1976\, WCT is proud to begin its 42nd season! \nSchool-year shows are open to Wilton children who will be in 4th-8th grade during the 2018-19 school year. Students must choose one show\, and all registration happens now; there is no later registration for the March show. Rehearsals for both shows are from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Middlebrook Auditorium. For Annie\, rehearsals are Tuesdays\, Wednesdays and Fridays from September through the last show\, and for Disney’s The Little Mermaid\, rehearsals are Mondays\, Wednesdays and Fridays from January through the last show. \nWCT hires professional directors\, music directors\, and choreographers for its shows\, most who have worked with the organization for many years. More dates and details can be found on the website. \nLast year\, the organization put on Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka in November\, and Oliver! in March. The shows were very popular with audiences and actors alike. \nWCT Board vice president Andrea Bates says\, “I love to see the camaraderie and teamwork between all the students in the show. The older ones help the younger ones\, and it’s a great way for kids to get to know each other\, and then know children in all of the schools. Plus\, everyone learns that regardless of the size of your part\,\nit’s fun to go to rehearsal each day\, be with your friends\, and be onstage and part of the big numbers.”

SUMMARY:Wilton's Big Block Party Weekend
DESCRIPTION:In an effort to strengthen neighborhood connections and create opportunity for face-to-face conversation\, Wilton Youth Council’s Free Play Task Force is encouraging participation in Wilton’s Big Block Party Weekend. The theme is “Building community one block at a time.” The next town-wide weekend is September 15-16\, with each road or neighborhood choosing its own day and time. There are no hard and fast rules for the events\, but people are encouraged to think simple and keep it “old-fashioned.” \nWe have a two-pronged goal of creating opportunities for Wilton residents to connect in person instead of on social media\, as well as helping children to make friends in their neighborhood in order to foster more neighborhood free play. \nTop Reasons to have a Block Party \n1. Meet and get to know your neighbors\n2. Increase a sense of belonging in the community\n3. Get outside\, make friends and have fun–no excuses are needed to celebrate\n4. Find neighborhood playmates for your children\n5. Opportunity for face-to-face connection and conversation\n6. Meet some of the long standing neighbors and learn about your community history\n7. Decrease stress of snow days\, storms and emergency situations\n8. Create a neighborhood contact list

SUMMARY:Cat’s Cradle and other String Games Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:According to Historical Folk Toys\, “String games such as Cat’s Cradle have been played around the world for thousands (if not millions) of years. It does not appear that this game has a particular origin; rather\, it was developed independently by many cultures around the same time . . . . It seems that string figures were familiar to most native inhabitants of East Asia\, Australia\, Africa\, the Arctic\, the Americas\, and the Pacific Islands. Some string games might even be from the Stone Age! Since actual “string” was not available in most of these regions\, people used native sources like sinew or leather\, twine made from bark\, Hibiscus tree fiber\, or even braided human hair. Most string games are played with one or two pairs of hands\, but some people have been known to use their toes\, knees\, elbows\, and mouth. They can create some fabulous string patterns!” \nFor this Wilton Historical Society children’s workshop\, museum educator Lola Chen will discuss string games\, and teach the kids how to play four classic string games:  Cup and Saucer\, The Witch’s Broom\, Cat’s Cradle\, and Jacob’s Ladder. \nThe children will help make their own snack\, cookies decorated with cinnamon sugar in lattice patterns. \nThe workshop is suggested for children ages 6-12. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child\, with a maximum of $25 per family; non-members are $15 per child\, with a maximum of $35 per family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nIf you become a serious string game enthusiast or are just a little more curious\, check out the International String Figure Association (ISFA)\, which was founded in 1978 by Hiroshi Noguchi\, a Japanese mathematician\, and Philip Noble\, an Anglican missionary\, stationed in Paupa\, New Guinea.

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society's "Game of the Goose" Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:The Game of the Goose is a historical board game that is still lots of good fun! \nAccording to Thomas L. McDonald’s State of Play\, “One of the most popular board games in Colonial America was The Royall & Pleasant Game of Y Goose.” Commonly known as ‘The Game of Goose\,’ it uses a custom board depicting a circular track divided into 63 spaces. Two or more people roll dice and move markers along the track in a race to the finish. If they hit a space illustrated with a goose\, they move the same number of spaces again. Landing on illustrations\, such as a bridge\, maze or well\, sends a player backwards to a certain space.” \nMuseum educator Lola Chen will discuss early board games\, explain how to play The Game of the Goose\, and lead the children in making their own board. \nThe Game of the Goose holds the distinction of being the first modern commercial board game. Invented in Italy as early as 1500\, Game of the Goose (Gioco dell’Oca) was given by Francesco de Medici (1574-1587) as a gift to King Phillip II of Spain. It has been in production ever since that time\, so one could argue that it is also the most successful commercial board game ever – and is quite similar to Candyland. “It first reached England on June 16\, 1597\, when the game was entered in the Register of the Stationer’s Hall in London as “the newe and most pleasant game of the Goose. . . “ Like other British amusements\, the game migrated to American during the Colonial period\, and was still very popular as the Colonies headed towards Revolution. By 1895\, the University of Pennsylvania listed 146 different editions in its collection\, some of them from China and Japan” says Thomas L. McDonald’s State of Play. \nThe kids will help make their own snack. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Wilton Historical Society Members $10 per child\, maximum $25 per family; Non-members $15 per child\, maximum $35 per family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know?\n“The Game of the Goose was also an early example of theming. Years before Spongebob Monopoly and Shrek Concentration\, there were versions of Goose based upon the news of the day\, such as the French Revolution\, the Dreyfus Affair\, political campaigns\, romantic entanglements of the upper classes\, and even World War I. . . . Parents adapted the game for children’s use as teaching tool. There were versions that illustrated various travels in order to teach geography\, virtues and vices\, the stages of life\, Aesop’s Fables\, and the entire plot of Don Quixote. Yes\, 300 years before Harry Potter Clue there was Don Quixote Goose. The various traps and bonuses could be tied to any kind of failure/advancement\, wrong/right theme.” – Thomas L. McDonald’s State of Play

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society's Colonial Cookery & Customs for Kids: Scalloped Tomatoes
DESCRIPTION:Recipes for Scalloped Tomatoes can be found dating back to the 1820s. A simple dish to prepare\, it needs little more than fresh tomatoes\, a little onion\, salt\, pepper\, bread crumbs and butter\, a thrifty way to handle a bountiful harvest. Why is it called “scalloped” when there are no scallops involved? There is no clear answer to that question! \nOn Saturday\, Sept. 29\, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. the Wilton Historical Society will be holding a Colonial Cookery and Customs Workshop for Kids\, in which museum educator Lola Chen will be showing the children how to make Scalloped Tomatoes. She will also tell them about the tomato’s reputation\, which has evolved from the feared “poison apple” and “love apple” to an essential part of modern cuisine–who can imagine life without pizza\, tomato soup\, and salsa? \nThe Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids workshop at the Wilton Historical Society teaches kids a “reciept” (recipe) historically used in the Connecticut region. Previous sessions have made bannock cakes\, pease porridge\, pickles\, an amulet of green peas\, apple tansy\, fairy butter\, pumpkin bread\, cranberry shortbread\, New Year’s “cakes\,” New England chowder\, hand pies\, cheese and ramp soufflé\, pea and watercress Rappahannock\, blackberry maslin\, thirded bread\, pound cake with “Oranges” juice\, maple cup custard and pepper pot soup. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. \nWilton Historical Society Members $10 per child\, maximum $25 per family; non-members $15 per child\, maximum $35 per family. Space is limited–please register by email or call 203.762.7257. \n

SUMMARY:Husking Bee Workshop for Kids at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:In autumn\, after the corn had been harvested\, it was time for a husking bee. According to The Baltimore Sun\, “Corn cutting\, shocking and husking was a backbreaking task for farmers\, taking six or more weeks each fall. One way farmers lightened the workload was to invite their neighbors to a husking bee. The men gathered in the barn\, while the women prepared a fall feast. The men would have contests to see who could husk a basket of corn first. The younger men\, if they were lucky enough to find a red ear of corn\, could kiss a girl before dinner. Among friends\, gossip and cider\, everyone had an enjoyable evening.” \nAt this Wilton Historical Society workshop\, museum educator Lola Chen will discuss harvesting\, husking\, and the pleasures of shared efforts\, and guide the kids in fashioning a corn-husk wreath for the door. The kids will help make their own snack\, sweet corn cake. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Wilton Historical Society members’ cost is $10 per child\, maximum $25 per family; non-members’ cost is $15 per child\, maximum $35 per family. Please register via email or by calling 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know?\nA “bee” can mean “a gathering of people for a specific purpose.” Quilting bees\, husking bees\, spinning bees\, sewing bees\, apple bees and other bees were common in colonial New England. Many hands made the work light\, as neighbors helped each other with the prodigious and tedious tasks of the time. Bees were as much a social event as a productive gathering.
