DESCRIPTION:If you are designing a pollinator garden\, you will be happy to learn about the role trees and shrubs can play in the lives of honey bees and native pollinators and ways to incorporate them in your plans. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the presentation by Margery Winters at the Wilton Library on Wednesday\, March 13. Winters is the assistant director and instructor at Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton\, CT and manages their native plant gardens. She is also past chairman of the Federated Garden Club Landscape Design Study Program and a Master Landscape Design Consultant. \nWinters also serves as chairman on Simsbury Inland Wetland/Conservation Commission\, is a member the Simsbury Open Space Committee\, and the vice president of the Simsbury Land Trust. Margery has been actively involved in Connecticut’s river and land issues and worked on staff with a statewide river advocacy organization. \nThis lecture will also serve as the kickoff for the Community Canopy Program–Energy Saving Trees\, offering residents the opportunity to buy native trees through the Arbor Day Foundation in collaboration with the US Department of Forestry. \nThere is no charge to attend. SUMMARY:Holocaust Survivor Judith Altmann\, A Community Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Judith Altmann\, a Holocaust survivor and speaker for the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center\, returns to Wilton on Tuesday\, March 19 to share her story with the community. \nBorn in Jasina\, Czechoslovakia\, which was invaded by the Nazis in 1939\, Altmann was arrested in 1944 and transported to Auschwitz concentration camp with her niece\, where they were selected for work\, rather than sent to the gas chambers and death. From there she was moved to Essen and Gelsenkirchen Labour camps\, where she remained until March 1945\, and later survived the “death march” that ended in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp. Sick with typhus\, Altmann was barely alive when she was liberated by the British Army in 1945. She was given the opportunity to go to Sweden\, where she lived until emigrating to the United States in 1948. \nAltmann\, who has extensive experience speaking in schools\, is a member of the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Speakers Bureau\, and is vice president of the Holocaust Child Survivors of Connecticut. \nThis presentation follows Altmann’s visit to Middlebrook where she spoke to all of the students during two school-wide assemblies. Her message is one of hope and forgiveness\, encouraging her listeners to think for themselves and speak out against injustice.

SUMMARY:BIOFEEDBACK:  Emotional Regulation & Stress Management
DESCRIPTION:Licensed clinical psychologist Mary Murphy\, PhD will discuss and demonstrate how biofeedback works. Biofeedback\, a promising treatment for ADHD\, anxiety and stress\, allows a person to learn how to monitor and change his or her body’s reaction to stressors. \nUsing a computer or smartphone\, biofeedback software allows you to monitor your biological responses\, such as breathing rates\, muscle activity\, and heart rate. The therapy process teaches you to notice changes in your body and ways to intervene to stop the body’s reactions that cause you to feel stress. It allows you to process information more efficiently\, to improve focus\, and to interrupt the process of fight-flight-freeze\, which causes distress to so many. \nOne of the most important benefits of Biofeedback is that it can be learned relatively quickly\, while working with a trained provider\, and has the goal of transitioning to independent use. \nDuring our demonstration\, Dr. Murphy will display sample biofeedback software (HeartMath) and show participants how to use common biofeedback apps at home. \nDr. Murphy is in private practice\, in Ridgefield\, CT\, at Insight Counseling\, where she specializes in counseling\, executive function/academic coaching\, psychological testing\, and biofeedback. Her counseling practice focuses on helping adolescents and adults affected by mood disorders\, neurological conditions\, and substance use. Dr Murphy completed advanced fellowship training at the Yale School of Medicine. SUMMARY:Statues\, Boulders\, and Monoliths:  The World War One Memorials of Connecticut Illustrated Talk by Richard Donohue
DESCRIPTION:As the First World War ended\, American communities such as Wilton hurried to memorialize the great efforts of their sons and daughters. Changes in cultural and civic ideals since the American Civil War led to extensive public discourse about what memorials should and should not be. Government leaders\, artists\, historians\, and the monument industry itself promoted ideas from simple tablets to monoliths rivaling those of Egypt and Rome. Memorials throughout Connecticut exemplify this entire range of monumental styles. \nHistorian Richard Donohue will be presenting an illustrated talk on the World War I Monuments of Connecticut at the Wilton Historical Society. He will share stories of their design\, placement\, and the people memorialized on them. Special attention will be given to the many in Wilton. This illustrated program lasts for approximately one hour\, with questions\, and includes images of memorials throughout the 169 towns of Connecticut\, accompanied by musical recordings of the period. A light lunch is included. \nThis program is presented as part of the exhibition\, “Bullets\, Bonds and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\,” which will be on display in the Burt Barn Gallery from March 15-May 11\, 2019. \nDonohue is the town historian of his hometown of Cromwell\, CT. His original research has formed the basis of museum exhibits\, travelling lectures\, and living history programs on topics ranging from 18th-century slavery to Civil War-era subscription balls to early 20th-century marine engines. As president and program director of the Cromwell Historical Society for nearly 15 years and a teacher in both public and private schools for 25 years\, he strives to enhance his town’s interest and participation in local and national history. In addition to his work with history\, Donohue is a tenor soloist specializing in Middle English carols\, Bach arias\, and German Lieder and is the director of the 1876 Singing Society at Mystic Seaport. \nWilton Historical Society members attend for free; the cost for non-members is $10 per person. DESCRIPTION:In 2019 the Cultural Landscape Foundation’s (TCLF) Garden Dialogues program\, which provides exclusive access to exceptional landscapes\, will go coast to coast\, from elegant estates in Greenwich\, Connecticut\, and waterfront retreats in Maine\, to one of the oldest zinfandel vineyards in California and other sites in Florida\, Maryland\, Massachusetts\, New York\, Virginia\, Washington State\, Washington\, D.C.\, and elsewhere. These projects have been designed by some of today’s most talented and visionary landscape architects. \nCider Ridge Farm is located on the outskirts of Wilton. The farm encompasses 16 acres of preserved meadows and a historic working orchard. An 18th-century agricultural lane with fieldstone walls runs along the ridgeline of the property\, creating a purposeful divide between the site for a new homestead and the existing agrarian landscape. Two phases of work defined this project. The first\, a new home for a young and growing family on the south side of the property; the second\, the comprehensive restoration of the original 19th-century homestead on the northeast corner of the site. \nThe landscape architecture firm\, STIMSON\, worked closely with the owners to create a multi-generational homestead that expressed the contemporary needs of the modern family\, while preserving the integrity of the historic farm. Principals Stephen Stimson\, FASLA and Lauren Stimson\, ASLA will lead the design discussion and share how the juxtaposition of old and new\, rustic and modern\, became a guiding language for the materials\, planting palette and overall landscape expression of the project. \nOld Farm\nThe historic farmhouse dates back to the mid 1700s\, with connections to the Revolutionary War and stories of British troops staying overnight. Over the last century\, the farm raised horses and historically\, race horses. The careful siting of the birthing stalls on the New York side of the property meant the horses could be part of the New York racing circuit. The historic farm lane remains the landmark that organizes the site\, dividing the farm between Connecticut and New York. The stonewalls that define the lane were carefully restored and new openings were created at key moments to provide views and connections between the two homes. A new court\, a reclaimed bluestone terrace and a working garden of raised beds were integrated into the historic home. A series of walls around the old farmhouse were rebuilt using site fieldstone\, and define the original formal tea lawn. \n \nNew Farm\nThe new farm landscape was conceived as a series of outdoor rooms adjacent to the house\, with a working kitchen garden and perennial garden stepping up to the historic lane. The garden is a collection that reinterpret the site’s meadows\, selected for seasonal display of color and texture. Above the gardens\, a new pool\, pavilion and play garden converge at the historic lane\, carefully inserted between fragments of the historic farm walls. The use of rusted steel\, granite and reclaimed stone respond to the site’s heritage\, yet also express the Owners’ affinity for modern art and architecture. These materials also carry forward the property’s legacy\, in the hands of the farmer\, they shaped this landscape for well over a century. \n \nManagement\nMaintaining a legacy property like Cider Ridge Farm requires a great deal of planning\, effort and expertise. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that birch leaves can be used medicinally to treat gastrointestinal ailments and sore muscles\, and as a tea to treat gout–plus the cambium wood layer can be cut into strips and boiled to create edible “birch noodles”? The leaves and bark of willow are a source of salicin/salicylic acid\, the predecessor of aspirin\, for fever reduction and pain relief. Other common trees including pine\, beech and dogwood have herbal qualities\, as well. \nOn Thursday\, Aug. 1 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.\, master gardener Dana Weinberg will present an informal “talk and touch” titled “Beyond the Garden–Trees Can Be Herbs” at the Wilton Historical Society. She will be sharing her extensive knowledge of birch\, willow and many other trees that provide much more than shade and beauty in the garden. The talk will be followed by a reception in the beautiful Colonial Herb Garden. \nWeinberg has gardened enthusiastically for most of her life and received her Master Gardener Certification from the University of Connecticut in 2016. Her other interests including cooking\, baking\, floral decoration\, and a wide variety of studio art endeavors. She volunteers extensively at the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford\, where she has helped to catalog the fern garden\, designed and led classes on Arbor Earth Day\, and spent hour after hour weeding and mulching. Weinberg holds a B.A. in studio art and psychology from the University in Virginia. DESCRIPTION:The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Yale University first admitting women students. In the summer of 1969\, young women across the country sent in applications to Yale University for the first time. The Ivy League institution dedicated to graduating ‘1\,000 male leaders’ each year had finally decided to open its doors to the nation’s top female students. \nThe landmark decision was a huge step forward for women’s equality in education. However\, this first class of women found themselves immersed in an overwhelmingly male culture they were unprepared to face. Yale Needs Women\, an unflinching account of a group of young women striving for change\, is an inspiring story of strength\, resilience\, and courage that continues to resonate today. \nAnne Gardiner Perkins attended Yale University\, where she earned her BA in history and was the first woman editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. She is also a Rhodes Scholar and completed a BA in modern history at Balliol College\, Oxford University. She has spent her life in education\, from urban high school teacher to state-level policy maker. She received her Ph.D. in higher education at UMass Boston and has presented papers on higher education at leading conferences. A Q&A will follow the talk. SUMMARY:“In Search of the Old Leatherman”–A Talk by Nicholas Bellantoni
DESCRIPTION:From 1860-1889\, an unofficial Wilton resident\, the mysterious and silent “Old Leatherman\,” would pass through town every 34 days on his regular route from east to west\, sleeping in caves and eating food that local residents set out for him. Dr. Nicholas Bellantoni\, emeritus state archaeologist\, will present an illustrated talk\, “In Search of the Old Leatherman\,” in which he will discuss the history of this unique individual\, describe some of the caves he occupied and the archaeology done at a few of them\, and will touch on the time he spent in Wilton. \nAccording to Bob Russell’s book\, Wilton\, Connecticut:  Three Centuries of People Places\, and Progress\, two of the Leatherman’s regular food stops were the Nathan (later John) Comstock house at 77 Ridgefield Rd.\, and the Dick Moriarity house in the Huckleberry Hill area\, not far from Rock Lake Reservoir where he had a cave. Bellantoni will also discuss his search for the Old Leatherman’s unmarked grave in Sparta Cemetery\, in Ossining\, NY. He also serves as an Adjunct Associate Research Professor in the Department of Anthropology at University of Connecticut\, and is a former president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut and the National Association of State Archeologists. He has recently published a book\, The Long Journeys Home: The Repatriations of Henry Opukahaia and Albert Afraid of Hawk.

The presentation also provides strategies on how to be an informed and active bystander to thwart what could potentially be a dangerous situation. DESCRIPTION:Join Weir Farm‘s February Weir Farm Artist-In-Residence reception with Hannah Sklar\, co-sponsored by Weir Farm Art Center and Weir Farm National Historic Site\, and presented by Wilton Library. There is no charge to attend but registration suggested. Register online or call 203.762.6334. \nBy combining representational forms and imagery that denote the power\, subjugation and performativity associated with gender\, Sklar acts to implement her personal vision of an undefined spectrum of beauty and corporal strength using materials such as clay\, paint\, graphite and discarded sport objects to create tense assemblages. \nWeir Farm’s Artist-in-Residence program (AIR) selects 12 artists to live and work at Weir Farm each year. To date\, over 200 artists from throughout the U.S.\, as well as Tunisia\, Germany\, Australia\, India and the Netherlands have participated in the AIR program. Visual artists apply for one month residencies in all media and diverse artistic points of view from traditional to experimental.
