DESCRIPTION:From New York Times national baseball writer Tyler Kepner comes K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches – a deep dive into the stories\, stats\, folklore\, and nostalgia behind America’s pastime told through vivid anecdotes and insights\, examining the fastball\, the curveball\, the changeup\, the slider\, the cutter\, the sinker\, the splitter\, the knuckleball\, the screwball\, and the spitball. \nKepner has found that pitchers almost always love to talk about their craft:  18 of the 25 pitchers with the most strikeouts in the history of the sport have shared their perspectives with him\, including Nolan Ryan\, Steve Carlton\, Bob Gibson\, Randy Johnson\, and Pedro Martinez. \nKepner\, who lives in Wilton\, started covering baseball as a teenager\, interviewing players for a homemade magazine that was featured in The New York Times in 1989. He attended Vanderbilt University on the Grantland Rice/Fred Russell sportswriting scholarship\, then covered the Angels and the Mariners. He joined The New York Times in 2000\, covering the Mets for two seasons\, the Yankees for eight\, and serving as the national baseball writer since 2010. \nQ&A will follow the talk. DESCRIPTION:International documentary photographer and explorer Daryl Hawk will give a special photography presentation and lecture based on his most recent expedition to the northwestern provinces of Colombia this past March. Hawk embarked alone on a 1\,600-mile journey that started in the city of Cartagena and followed the highest coastal mountain range in the world–the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Range. His adventure culminated in the vast Guajira Peninsula which has some of the most rugged and spectacular desert landscapes in Colombia. La Guarija is home to the Wayuu indigenous people\, who have maintained their independent way of life through the centuries. \nHawk was there to shoot a documentary for magazines. SUMMARY:Garden Dialogues 2019: Wilton\, CT
DESCRIPTION:In 2019 the Cultural Landscape Foundation’s (TCLF) Garden Dialogues program\, which provides exclusive access to exceptional landscapes\, will go coast to coast\, from elegant estates in Greenwich\, Connecticut\, and waterfront retreats in Maine\, to one of the oldest zinfandel vineyards in California and other sites in Florida\, Maryland\, Massachusetts\, New York\, Virginia\, Washington State\, Washington\, D.C.\, and elsewhere. These projects have been designed by some of today’s most talented and visionary landscape architects. \nCider Ridge Farm is located on the outskirts of Wilton. The farm encompasses 16 acres of preserved meadows and a historic working orchard. An 18th-century agricultural lane with fieldstone walls runs along the ridgeline of the property\, creating a purposeful divide between the site for a new homestead and the existing agrarian landscape. Two phases of work defined this project. The first\, a new home for a young and growing family on the south side of the property; the second\, the comprehensive restoration of the original 19th-century homestead on the northeast corner of the site. \nThe landscape architecture firm\, STIMSON\, worked closely with the owners to create a multi-generational homestead that expressed the contemporary needs of the modern family\, while preserving the integrity of the historic farm. Principals Stephen Stimson\, FASLA and Lauren Stimson\, ASLA will lead the design discussion and share how the juxtaposition of old and new\, rustic and modern\, became a guiding language for the materials\, planting palette and overall landscape expression of the project. \nOld Farm\nThe historic farmhouse dates back to the mid 1700s\, with connections to the Revolutionary War and stories of British troops staying overnight. Over the last century\, the farm raised horses and historically\, race horses. The careful siting of the birthing stalls on the New York side of the property meant the horses could be part of the New York racing circuit. The historic farm lane remains the landmark that organizes the site\, dividing the farm between Connecticut and New York. The stonewalls that define the lane were carefully restored and new openings were created at key moments to provide views and connections between the two homes. A new court\, a reclaimed bluestone terrace and a working garden of raised beds were integrated into the historic home. A series of walls around the old farmhouse were rebuilt using site fieldstone\, and define the original formal tea lawn. \n \nNew Farm\nThe new farm landscape was conceived as a series of outdoor rooms adjacent to the house\, with a working kitchen garden and perennial garden stepping up to the historic lane. The garden is a collection that reinterpret the site’s meadows\, selected for seasonal display of color and texture. Above the gardens\, a new pool\, pavilion and play garden converge at the historic lane\, carefully inserted between fragments of the historic farm walls. The use of rusted steel\, granite and reclaimed stone respond to the site’s heritage\, yet also express the Owners’ affinity for modern art and architecture. These materials also carry forward the property’s legacy\, in the hands of the farmer\, they shaped this landscape for well over a century. \n \nManagement\nMaintaining a legacy property like Cider Ridge Farm requires a great deal of planning\, effort and expertise. Burt Demarche\, President of The LaurelRock Company who constructed the project with STIMSON\, will join the dialogue to discuss landscape strategies\, curation and long-term management at the Farm. \nAttendees will enjoy a take-home harvest basket from Cider Ridge Farm’s bountiful kitchen garden. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that birch leaves can be used medicinally to treat gastrointestinal ailments and sore muscles\, and as a tea to treat gout–plus the cambium wood layer can be cut into strips and boiled to create edible “birch noodles”? The leaves and bark of willow are a source of salicin/salicylic acid\, the predecessor of aspirin\, for fever reduction and pain relief. Other common trees including pine\, beech and dogwood have herbal qualities\, as well. \nOn Thursday\, Aug. 1 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.\, master gardener Dana Weinberg will present an informal “talk and touch” titled “Beyond the Garden–Trees Can Be Herbs” at the Wilton Historical Society. She will be sharing her extensive knowledge of birch\, willow and many other trees that provide much more than shade and beauty in the garden. The talk will be followed by a reception in the beautiful Colonial Herb Garden. \nWeinberg has gardened enthusiastically for most of her life and received her Master Gardener Certification from the University of Connecticut in 2016. Her other interests including cooking\, baking\, floral decoration\, and a wide variety of studio art endeavors. She volunteers extensively at the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford\, where she has helped to catalog the fern garden\, designed and led classes on Arbor Earth Day\, and spent hour after hour weeding and mulching. Weinberg holds a B.A. in studio art and psychology from the University in Virginia. SUMMARY:Anne Gardiner Perkins Author Talk–"Yale Needs Women:  How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant"
DESCRIPTION:The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Yale University first admitting women students. In the summer of 1969\, young women across the country sent in applications to Yale University for the first time. The Ivy League institution dedicated to graduating ‘1\,000 male leaders’ each year had finally decided to open its doors to the nation’s top female students. \nThe landmark decision was a huge step forward for women’s equality in education. However\, this first class of women found themselves immersed in an overwhelmingly male culture they were unprepared to face. Yale Needs Women\, an unflinching account of a group of young women striving for change\, is an inspiring story of strength\, resilience\, and courage that continues to resonate today. \nAnne Gardiner Perkins attended Yale University\, where she earned her BA in history and was the first woman editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. She is also a Rhodes Scholar and completed a BA in modern history at Balliol College\, Oxford University. She has spent her life in education\, from urban high school teacher to state-level policy maker. She received her Ph.D. in higher education at UMass Boston and has presented papers on higher education at leading conferences. A Q&A will follow the talk. SUMMARY:“In Search of the Old Leatherman”–A Talk by Nicholas Bellantoni
DESCRIPTION:From 1860-1889\, an unofficial Wilton resident\, the mysterious and silent “Old Leatherman\,” would pass through town every 34 days on his regular route from east to west\, sleeping in caves and eating food that local residents set out for him. Dr. Nicholas Bellantoni\, emeritus state archaeologist\, will present an illustrated talk\, “In Search of the Old Leatherman\,” in which he will discuss the history of this unique individual\, describe some of the caves he occupied and the archaeology done at a few of them\, and will touch on the time he spent in Wilton. \nAccording to Bob Russell’s book\, Wilton\, Connecticut:  Three Centuries of People Places\, and Progress\, two of the Leatherman’s regular food stops were the Nathan (later John) Comstock house at 77 Ridgefield Rd.\, and the Dick Moriarity house in the Huckleberry Hill area\, not far from Rock Lake Reservoir where he had a cave. Bellantoni will also discuss his search for the Old Leatherman’s unmarked grave in Sparta Cemetery\, in Ossining\, NY. He received his doctorate in anthropology from UConn in 1987 and was shortly thereafter appointed state archaeologist. He also serves as an Adjunct Associate Research Professor in the Department of Anthropology at University of Connecticut\, and is a former president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut and the National Association of State Archeologists. He has recently published a book\, The Long Journeys Home: The Repatriations of Henry Opukahaia and Albert Afraid of Hawk.

DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, Wilton Teen PeaceWorks and Wilton Library are co-hosting “Is Your Daughter Safe? The Her-Self Awareness Lecture” about safety for young women\, and featuring the mother of a teen girl murdered in CT. \nDonna Cimarelli\, CEO and co-founder of the Maren Sanchez Foundation\, is the mother of Maren Sanchez\, a Milford\, CT teenager who died after being stabbed by an obsessed classmate in 2014. \nThis presentation\, “Her-Self Awareness Lecture” trains young people on how to use situational awareness to identify pre-incident indicators that can result in dangerous situations. The presentation also provides strategies on how to be an informed and active bystander to thwart what could potentially be a dangerous situation. The goal is to teach young women and girls how to trust and follow their instincts and pay attention to that gut feeling. \n The lecture on Thursday\, Oct. 10\, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wilton Library\, is for teens\, parents\, grandparents and other members of the community to have the opportunity to hear Cimarelli’s story and benefit from her wisdom. The program has been found to be effective in lessening the negative impact of anxiety on children and families. Register online or call 203.762.6334. \nBy combining representational forms and imagery that denote the power\, subjugation and performativity associated with gender\, Sklar acts to implement her personal vision of an undefined spectrum of beauty and corporal strength using materials such as clay\, paint\, graphite and discarded sport objects to create tense assemblages. \nWeir Farm’s Artist-in-Residence program (AIR) selects 12 artists to live and work at Weir Farm each year. To date\, over 200 artists from throughout the U.S.\, as well as Tunisia\, Germany\, Australia\, India and the Netherlands have participated in the AIR program. Visual artists apply for one month residencies in all media and diverse artistic points of view from traditional to experimental.

DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Dr. Kelly Marino\, presented by the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society \nWith 2020 marking the Centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society have partnered to present a talk by Dr. Kelly Marino. “The Movement was a Great ‘Mosaic’: Connecticut Women and Stories from the Suffrage Campaign” will take place on Saturday\, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m.. \nWell-known suffragist and later Ridgefield\, CT resident Alice Paul once commented that she always felt that the women’s movement was a sort of “mosaic”. Each person “puts in one little stone” and makes a unique contribution important to fueling the larger effort. \nMarino’s presentation explores the history of the suffrage movement in Connecticut by highlighting the stories of several key women who contributed to the campaign in different ways. It includes colorful narratives from their biographies and backgrounds as well as their tactics and reform efforts to promote women’s right to vote and other causes beyond to improve the lives of women and children in the United States. \nIn addition to recognizing the Suffrage movement\, the event will also serve to celebrate the founding of the League of Women Voters on Feb. 14\, 1920 plus the establishment of the Wilton branch 40 years ago. The location is the Wilton Historical Society\, and the presentation will be followed by a reception. \nAll are welcome. A native of Connecticut\, she is passionate about state and local history. She received her BSED and CT Teacher’s Certification from CCSU in 2008 and MA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst in 2010. She graduated with her Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2016 and started work at Sacred Heart University in the Fall of 2019. Dr. Marino teaches courses on United States history and surveys of western civilization.

DESCRIPTION:In the 13th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series focuses on the theme of “Jazzed Up: The History of Jazz in America.” \nIn this lecture\, Reggie Quinerly addresses the factors\, influences and artistic offerings associated with the unique period in America’s history that was the Harlem Renaissance. \nDuring the 1920s\, the African-American enclave of Harlem was the epicenter of a deep cultural transformation. This movement acknowledged and utilized the artistic expression of many brilliant thinkers. The impact of this Renaissance was widespread and became the essential crucible from which a new generation emerged. \nQuinerly grew up in a rich musical environment in Houston and graduated from the Mannes School of Music at New School University where he got to study with three great drummers:  Jimmy Cobb\, Lewis Nash\, and Kenny Washington. After some time honing his chops on the scene\, he returned to school earning his Master’s in Jazz Studies at the prestigious Juilliard School. He has played with such leading artists as Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, Joe Lovano\, Chico and Von Freeman\, and Greg Osby. In 2017\, he fulfilled a life-long goal of returning to higher education\, this time as a Juilliard faculty member and in the summer of 2019\, he joined the faculty at Hunter College. He holds a Supervisors certification and Vice-Principal and Principal certifications in Education. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nWeir Farm Art Center\, in partnership with Weir Farm National Historic Site and the Wilton Library\, present an Artist Talk with Jenny Graham-Hougah in the Rimer Room at the Wilton Library. \nHougah’s work focuses on objects in space\, and it describes how things interact with the living. In uncertain times\, she finds comfort in representing the world realistically. The polarized narratives that fuel debates leave marks and tensions in rooms and houses. She paints interior scenes and still-lifes that hint at\, or partially include\, the people that inhabit them\, and the interior lives they lead. \nWeir Farm’s Artist-in-Residence program (AIR) selects 12 artists to live and work at Weir Farm each year. To date\, over 200 artists from throughout the U.S.\, as well as Tunisia\, Germany\, Australia\, India and the Netherlands have participated in the AIR program. Visual artists apply for one month residencies in all media and diverse artistic points of view from traditional to experimental.

DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library is re-launching its literature seminar series to be conducted online by two favorite teachers:  Judson Scruton and Gerald Weiss. This teaching tag-team will combine their talents to cover the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice juxtaposed against several more modern poets.
