Register online or call 203.762.6334. \nBy combining representational forms and imagery that denote the power\, subjugation and performativity associated with gender\, Sklar acts to implement her personal vision of an undefined spectrum of beauty and corporal strength using materials such as clay\, paint\, graphite and discarded sport objects to create tense assemblages. \nWeir Farm’s Artist-in-Residence program (AIR) selects 12 artists to live and work at Weir Farm each year. To date\, over 200 artists from throughout the U.S.\, as well as Tunisia\, Germany\, Australia\, India and the Netherlands have participated in the AIR program. Visual artists apply for one month residencies in all media and diverse artistic points of view from traditional to experimental.

DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Dr. Kelly Marino\, presented by the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society \nWith 2020 marking the Centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society have partnered to present a talk by Dr. Kelly Marino. “The Movement was a Great ‘Mosaic’: Connecticut Women and Stories from the Suffrage Campaign” will take place on Saturday\, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m.. \nWell-known suffragist and later Ridgefield\, CT resident Alice Paul once commented that she always felt that the women’s movement was a sort of “mosaic”. Each person “puts in one little stone” and makes a unique contribution important to fueling the larger effort. \nMarino’s presentation explores the history of the suffrage movement in Connecticut by highlighting the stories of several key women who contributed to the campaign in different ways. It includes colorful narratives from their biographies and backgrounds as well as their tactics and reform efforts to promote women’s right to vote and other causes beyond to improve the lives of women and children in the United States. \nIn addition to recognizing the Suffrage movement\, the event will also serve to celebrate the founding of the League of Women Voters on Feb. 14\, 1920 plus the establishment of the Wilton branch 40 years ago. The location is the Wilton Historical Society\, and the presentation will be followed by a reception. \nAll are welcome. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDr. Kelly Marino is a historian of 20th century America with a focus on women’s history and the history of sexuality. A native of Connecticut\, she is passionate about state and local history. She received her BSED and CT Teacher’s Certification from CCSU in 2008 and MA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst in 2010. She graduated with her Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2016 and started work at Sacred Heart University in the Fall of 2019. Dr. Marino teaches courses on United States history and surveys of western civilization.

DESCRIPTION:In the 13th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series focuses on the theme of “Jazzed Up: The History of Jazz in America.” \nIn this lecture\, Reggie Quinerly addresses the factors\, influences and artistic offerings associated with the unique period in America’s history that was the Harlem Renaissance. \nDuring the 1920s\, the African-American enclave of Harlem was the epicenter of a deep cultural transformation. This movement acknowledged and utilized the artistic expression of many brilliant thinkers. The impact of this Renaissance was widespread and became the essential crucible from which a new generation emerged. \nQuinerly grew up in a rich musical environment in Houston and graduated from the Mannes School of Music at New School University where he got to study with three great drummers:  Jimmy Cobb\, Lewis Nash\, and Kenny Washington. After some time honing his chops on the scene\, he returned to school earning his Master’s in Jazz Studies at the prestigious Juilliard School. He has played with such leading artists as Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, Joe Lovano\, Chico and Von Freeman\, and Greg Osby. In 2017\, he fulfilled a life-long goal of returning to higher education\, this time as a Juilliard faculty member and in the summer of 2019\, he joined the faculty at Hunter College. He holds a Supervisors certification and Vice-Principal and Principal certifications in Education. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nWeir Farm Art Center\, in partnership with Weir Farm National Historic Site and the Wilton Library\, present an Artist Talk with Jenny Graham-Hougah in the Rimer Room at the Wilton Library. \nHougah’s work focuses on objects in space\, and it describes how things interact with the living. In uncertain times\, she finds comfort in representing the world realistically. The polarized narratives that fuel debates leave marks and tensions in rooms and houses. She paints interior scenes and still-lifes that hint at\, or partially include\, the people that inhabit them\, and the interior lives they lead. \nWeir Farm’s Artist-in-Residence program (AIR) selects 12 artists to live and work at Weir Farm each year. To date\, over 200 artists from throughout the U.S.\, as well as Tunisia\, Germany\, Australia\, India and the Netherlands have participated in the AIR program. Visual artists apply for one month residencies in all media and diverse artistic points of view from traditional to experimental.

DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College\, returns to Wilton Library with a virtual lecture series on James Joyce’s Ulysses viewed through the lens of Homer’s epic. While James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) differs significantly from Homer’s Odyssey (8th century BCE)\, they are intimately joined in the depiction of a homeward journey that is extended and delayed by incidents variously mundane and momentous. In each case\, the final homecoming is informed by all that has transpired to bring the hero back to where he first set out. \nThere is no charge for the program. DESCRIPTION:A Talk by Dr. Julie Hughes on Zoom \nHannah Ambler and Grace Schenck’s last names may be well known in Wilton–Ambler Farm and Schenck’s Island are local landmarks–but their individual lives are not. Join the Wilton Historical Society on Thursday\, Oct. 22 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. for an informative and engaging talk on Zoom by local historian Dr. Julie Hughes. \nHer talk\, “Caring for the Vote: Mothers and Suffragists in Wilton\, Connecticut\,” will explore the origins of Hannah Ambler and Grace Schenck’s engagement with this progressive movement. What awakened their interest in suffrage\, and what kind of women did they come to believe they needed to be in order to win–and deserve–the vote? \n“The answer to these questions emerges from what I call the politics of caring\,” says Hughes\, “as mothers\, club women\, society women\, teachers\, and health professionals.” A Q&A session follows the talk. \nIn 1920\, Hannah Raymond Ambler (1843-1925) of Ambler Farm was a lifelong Wilton resident and elderly widowed mother who managed her own finances and rental properties throughout southern Fairfield County. Grace Knight Schenck (1877-1931) was a newcomer in town with her Belgian husband and young children and had worked as a head surgical nurse in New York City. Like so many other women in Connecticut State and across the country\, Hannah and Grace voted for the first time in the presidential election that year. The program is offered in conjunction with the Wilton Historical Society’s on-line exhibition “Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote.” \nDr. Julie Hughes earned her Ph.D. in South Asian history from the University of Texas at Austin. She taught at Vassar College and Queens College and is the author of Animal Kingdoms (Harvard University Press\, 2013). Since moving to the Wilton area\, she has become interested in local history. She is now archivist at the Wilton Library History Room and has worked on history projects with the Wilton Historical Society\, Ambler Farm\, and the Gilbert & Bennett Cultural Center. \nFor additional information and to register\, email the Wilton Historical Society to receive a link to the event with information on submitting questions. SUMMARY:Wilton Reads – F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Jazz Age with Mark Schenker
DESCRIPTION:Mark J. Schenker of Yale College will discuss F. Scott Fitzgerald’s life and work in the 1920s—a period he both depicted in his fiction and came to represent in his personal life—through the lens of Tales of the Jazz Age (1922). The most popular of the four short story collections published in the author’s short lifetime (1896-1940)\, Tales of the Jazz Age reflects the eclecticism\, exuberance and experimentation of the 1920s\, also called the Roaring Twenties because of the high energy and even freneticism of the decade. \nSchenker has been at Yale College since 1990 and is currently a senior associate dean of the College and Dean of Academic Affairs. A former lecturer in the English Department at Yale\, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with a concentration in 19th-century and early 20th-century English literature.
