SUMMARY:Clara Schumann: Ultra Pianist\, Performer and Pedagogue (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:In this Wilton Library Zoom session\, Jeffrey Engel will discuss the remarkable career of Clara Schumann and play selected excerpts from her compositions. \nAt Clara’s death in May of 1896\, an obituary appearing in the Manchester Guardian proclaimed her “the greatest pianist of her sex that the world has ever known.” This was not hyperbole. Even as a child prodigy\, Clara was placed in the top tier of her contemporaries\, both male and female. In some ways\, she was also ahead of her time. Clara promulgated music by Beethoven\, Chopin and Robert Schumann that was largely unknown to the public. She was the first to perform from memory. Clara was also an influential teacher and composer of talent\, even though she stopped writing music before the age of 40. She was unquestionably one of the great musicians of the 19th century! \nJeffrey Engel has been giving lectures devoted to music history for some 15 years. As a cellist\, he played with numerous orchestras in France including that of the Paris Opera\, performed in chamber ensembles and taught in municipal conservatories. Since 2004\, Engel has taught at Northwestern Connecticut Community College (Winsted). He was a contributor to the 2001 edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. In 2010 he was selected by Litchfield Magazine as one of the 50 most influential people in Litchfield County. \nRegistration is required. Register online.

DESCRIPTION:In the 15th year of collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, this five-part scholarly lecture series held virtually will focus on the theme of “Tycoons: Bane or Benefactors?” \nDuring this program\, “Henry Ford’s Borrowed Humanity: How the Same Man Lifted and Then Lost America\,” author and historian Julie Fenster will discuss Henry Ford\, possibly the first American tycoon who was considered “beloved” but who turned darker in the years after the success of the famous Model T. \nHenry Ford was a homegrown hero to the working class but also regarded as an unwelcome radical by big business. After the first decade of the Model T\, Ford became a darker and yet darker presence\, fanning Fascism and anti-Semitism\, while provoking bitter labor disputes at his company. \nThe moderator is Stephen Hudspeth. SUMMARY:The Modern American Novel with Mark Schenker (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College returns via Zoom in a continuation of his 2021 lectures on classic novels\, presented by the Wilton Library. \nBeginning on Feb. 24\, the event will run from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. every Thursday except for Mar. 10.  \nHaving discussed the Victorian novel last spring and the modern British novel this past fall\, he turns now to American fiction in the first decades of the 20th century. With reference to masterworks by five acclaimed American authors\, he will consider the changing nature of the novel as an art form\, the rise of modernism\, the influence of the First World War\, and the ways in which American fiction of the period resembles and differs from English novels of the same era. \nAttendees are not expected to read or reread all or even any of the novels\, but a familiarity with them will of course make the lectures more meaningful. Historic houses can also be updated in appropriate ways to make them even more efficient\, some of which you can do yourself. Join us as we share helpful tips and case studies to help owners save money on their bills\, help the environment\, and maintain their homes — all at the same time! \nDon’t miss this detailed presentation by two experts! \nMarena Wisniewski serves as the State Register Coordinator for the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office\, as well as an environmental reviewer and coordinator of the Women’s and Minority History Trail. Prior to coming to Hartford\, she was the Preservation & Public Engagement Officer at the Providence Preservation Society\, as well as a private consultant serving New York City. She holds an MS in Historic Preservation from Columbia University and a MA in World History from NYU. With a specific concentration in materials science\, she spends most of her free time researching building performance and arguing with window salesmen. \nTodd Levine is an architectural historian with a Master’s degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. Todd has worked at inspecting\, studying\, and preserving Connecticut’s historic resources since 2003. Todd was the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation’s (now Preservation Connecticut) Preservation Services Officer from 2006-2009 and from 2009-2012 he was Director of the Historic Barns of Connecticut program\, one of the most comprehensive barn programs in the nation. SUMMARY:Enslaved Black Residents and Their Descendants: Five Lives from Wilton’s Past — A Talk by Dr. Julie Hughes
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Feb. 5\, from 2 p.m.-3 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will be holding a Black History Month presentation on Zoom. \nWilton’s first Black residents were enslaved by many of the same families whose names now define our streets\, topography\, and historic buildings\, including the Cannons\, Lamberts\, Abbotts\, Beldens\, Raymonds\, Keelers\, and Marvins. We rarely know more than a name and perhaps a baptismal date\, or sometimes a sale price\, for these earliest enslaved peoples. Locating even these scant records – much less tracing the lives of specific individuals – is extremely challenging. Dr. Julie Hughes has conducted extensive original research and brought to light some remarkable findings for the Wilton Historical Society with the help of grant funding from the Elizabeth Raymond Ambler Trust. The lives of the few who do stand out despite the flaws in the historical record – because of their own determination\, their charisma\, or thanks to the capacity of bureaucracies for producing and retaining paperwork – tell fascinating\, infuriating\, and inspiring stories of how Black Wiltonians continually advocated for themselves (with a little help from their neighbors) from the 1700s through the early 1900s. Dr. Hughes will present fascinating information in her lecture “Enslaved Black Residents and Their Descendants: Five Lives from Wilton’s Past”. The focus will be on Philes\, aka Gin (Abbott Family); Jane Manning James (Abbott Family); Charles D. King (Lambert Family); Susan Dullivan and Charlotte Gilmore. \nJulie Hughes earned her PhD in South Asian history from the University of Texas at Austin. She taught at Vassar College and Queens College and is the author of Animal Kingdoms (Harvard University Press\, 2013). Since moving to the Wilton area\, she has become interested in local history. She is now an archivist at the Wilton History Room in the Wilton Library and has worked on history projects with the Wilton Historical Society\, Ambler Farm\, and the Gilbert & Bennett Cultural Center. Her most recent work for the Wilton Historical Society was research for the 2020 online exhibition\, Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote (available 24/7 on the Wilton Historical Society website) as well as her talk “Caring for the Vote: Mothers and Suffragists in Wilton\, Connecticut.” \nPlease register via email. SUMMARY:Wilton Library/WHS Scholarly Series: Connecticut Creativity: Vision + Imagination + Inspiration with Emily Gifford
DESCRIPTION:In the 14th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, this 5-part scholarly lecture series held virtually focuses on the theme of “Connecticut Creativity.” In this final lecture of the series\, Theatrical Innovation from Connecticut to London and Back Again\, Emily Gifford explores William Gillette\, a colorful Connecticuter whose contributions to global popular culture have persisted for over a century. Gillette enjoyed early success in the theater as an actor\, playwright\, and director. “His” Sherlock Holmes brought Gillette the most recognition\, as well as financial rewards. He used some of his income to create a wonderfully eccentric castle overlooking the Connecticut River\, a residence as ingenious as any Holmes could have imagined. Emily Gifford is an independent historian\, educated in Connecticut at Trinity College (BA)\, Yale Divinity School (MA)\, and Central Connecticut State University (MA). The program is moderated by Steve Hudspeth and sponsored by Phil Lauria and Elaine Tai-Lauria. This program is being hosted by the Wilton Historical Society. No charge; donations welcome.
