SUMMARY:America 250: Abigail Adams\, America's First Modern Woman\, as Told by Her Husband John Adams
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the 250th anniversary commemorating the American Revolution and the signing of our Declaration of Independence\, the month of March – designated as National Women’s History Month – is a fitting time to celebrate Abigail Adams\, a woman ahead of her time\, as told by her husband John Adams\, portrayed by George Baker. Please join the Wilton Library for this inspiring performance on Thursday\, Mar. 12\, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. \nSince 2008\, George Baker has portrayed the character of President John Adams in a one-man show throughout the country. He speaks with admiration\, humor\, and affection about his wife\, Abigail\, the “First Modern American Woman\,” describing how she defied the sexist conventions of her time\, that married women could not own property\, yet\, with her amazing financial skills and insights\, made the Adams family prosperous. She helped John found the new nation\, advised him in important political affairs\, and raised their son\, John Quincy Adams\, to be prepared to ultimately become Ambassador to Great Britain\, Secretary of State\, and finally President of the United States. It is a story about their romance\, challenges\, trials\, and accomplishments\, which is the story of ordinary people living in extraordinary times. \nGeorge Baker: \nGeorge Baker has portrayed the character of President John Adams in a one-man show throughout the country at national conventions and venues like Mystic Seaport\, the Presidential Libraries of Harry S Truman\, Dwight D. Eisenhower\, and George H. W. Bush\, and the New York Historical Society\, and was featured as John Adams on NPR‘s weekend program\, Studio 360. George is a graduate of Columbia College and Columbia Law School\, and practiced law in Connecticut from 1973-2024. \nRegistration is requested.  Register online\, or call (203) 762-6334. \nRegistration will close on March 12\, 2026 at 5:00pm.

SUMMARY:Hot & Cool Jazz: Chris Brubeck's Triple Play at The Wilton Library
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library on Friday\, March 13 at 7 p.m. for their next Hot & Cool Jazz concert featuring Triple Play\, a trio of three outstanding and versatile musicians: Peter Madcat Ruth (on harmonica\, jaw harp\, percussion  & vocals)\, Joel Brown (folk and classical acoustic guitar & vocals)\, and Chris Brubeck (electric bass\, bass trombone\, piano & vocals). Collectively\, they bring a rare level of joy\, virtuosity\, and American spirit to the folk\, blues\, jazz\, and classical music they perform. \nHot & Cool Jazz is brought to you by the generosity of the Estate of James (Tom) and Alice Brown. Pre-registrants should arrive by 6:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed\, walk-ins\, and pre-registrants will be admitted after 6:50 p.m. if space is available. There will be a reception following the concert with CDs available for sale and signing. \nTriple Play’s musical roots go way back (50+ years!) in each member’s history. Chris and Madcat have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969\, first as young rock musicians in the group New Heavenly Blue (with albums on RCA and Atlantic Records)\, Sky King (on Columbia)\, and then as jazz musicians touring the world with Dave Brubeck. Paul deBarros\, writer for The Seattle Times and Downbeat\, commented after seeing a performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival: “Triple Play is what jazz always was and always should be about: good-time rhythm\, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues.” \nDave Brubeck’s last recorded performance was captured on the exciting Triple Play Live at Arthur Zankel Music Center. The crowd is wildly enthusiastic on this well-reviewed CD\, which also featured Joel Brown’s father\, Frank Brown\, on clarinet. You can often hear this innovative version of “Take Five” featuring Madcat’s polyrhythmic jaw harp and burning solos by Dave\, Joel and Chris on Sirius XM Jazz. Triple Play’s music has international reach\, as they were a hit playing with The Singapore Chinese Orchestra and returned for a second performance which was recorded and released on Blue Forest Records. “It all fits together because of the talent and taste of the musicians\, who groove no matter what they’re doing and it’s tremendous fun\, to boot\,” said All About Jazz. \nRegistration is Required \nCapacity has been reached. Additional registrants will be placed on the waitlist.

SUMMARY:The Wilton Library Presents Film Screening: “Join or Die”
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library at a special screening of Join or Die\, a film about why you should join a club…and why the fate of America depends on it. \nIn this Emmy-nominated feature documentary\, follow the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam\, whose groundbreaking Bowling Alone research into America’s decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy’s present crisis. The film also discusses the direct impact of social disconnection on mortality rates\, arguing that people living in social isolation die earlier than those with stronger social bonds. Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Priya Parker\, Pete Buttigieg\, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Jane McAlevey\, and Eddie Glaude Jr. — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country\, Bob explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And\, most importantly… What can we do about it? \nAbout Robert Putnam: \nHarvard professor Robert D. Putnam is America’s preeminent political scientist — and one of the most widely read and cited social scientists living today. Author of fourteen books\, translated into twenty languages\, his work focuses on asking big questions about American society and deploying immense\, creative studies and analyses to unlock answers. \nHis Bowling Alone research — which demonstrated that levels of American community connections were in decline over the past half-century — rocketed Putnam to national fame in the late 1990s\, earning him the moniker “the poet laureate of civil society” and the ear of presidents\, religious leaders\, and tech founders over the coming decades. In 2012\, Putnam received the National Humanities Medal\, the nation’s highest honor for contributions to the humanities. As more Americans turn on to the reality of our social isolation crisis\, a consistent drumbeat of media interest in revisiting Putnam’s work has grown. More information is available at https://joinordiefilm.com/. \nDoors will open at 6:30 p.m\, with the film to begin at 7:00 p.m. The run time is 90 minutes. Movie snacks & refreshments provided. \nRegistration is requested. Please register online or call (203) 762-6334. \nThis program is made possible by the generosity and collaboration of Block Party USA\, Town of Wilton Social Services\, Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools\, and Wilton Youth Council.

SUMMARY:Teaching Autistic Children: A Way That Works for Parents
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for another important SPED*NET presentation on Wednesday\, Apr. 29\, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilton Library. Robert J. Bernstein\, an educational and behavioral therapist\, will discuss ways to help your child engage\, assimilate new information\, and develop new thoughts and behaviors. \nWe want our autistic children to live happy and successful lives. Many parents\, however\, often approach their kids with an agenda: instead of offering acceptance and approval\, they want their child to do something differently—to change. Consequently\, autistic kids frequently feel that who they are is not who people want them to be. They end up hiding their authentic nature and keeping up a façade. \nRob Bernstein has been working with children on the autism spectrum for over 35 years. His book Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normal\, including first place for “Parenting Family” from the New Generation Indie Book Awards. His newest book is Uniquely Normal Manual: Using the Bernstein Cognitive Method for Autism (Future Horizons\, 2023). Rob has a personal link to autism\, having grown up with an autistic brother and as the parent of an autistic son. His family experience led him to train in developmental psychology and education\, the knowledge base that underlies his cognitive method for working with autistic children. He is well established with a media presence through his podcast\, monthly webinars that he runs for the US Autism Association and his YouTube channel with Marcia Eckerd\, Everything Neurodiversity. His work has been featured on Dateline and in the New York Times. Rob has presented dozens of workshops and keynote addresses at both national and international conferences. He is an international consultant working with autistic children and special education PTA groups across the United States\, the United Kingdom\, and India. He is on the Board of Directors of ARC and the US Autism Association. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools\, Easton CT SEPTA and Newtown Sped PTA. \nRegister at: https://wilton.librarycalendar.com/event/hold-spednet-31172 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Community Cultural Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Community Cultural Celebration is an opportunity to unite the Wilton community\, showcasing the diverse cultures that make up our town through dance\, music\, dress\, holidays and food from around the world. Each of the 15 countries represented will have a table display to help you learn more about their culture\, and we will also feature larger performances from select cultures throughout the event. \nBring the kids to travel the world with our Passport Program\, where they can collect stickers from each country when they stop by their table!
