SUMMARY:Playing By Heart XII Piano Benefit Concert
DESCRIPTION:Local Piano Students Perform at Wilton Library \n*This event is not sponsored\, co-sponsored\, or approved by Wilton Library.\nOn Sunday\, Sept. 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the Brubeck Room of the Wilton Library\, advanced students of Wilton pianist and teacher Kyong Hee Cho will perform in the 12th “Playing By Heart Benefit Concert.” \nThis year’s concert will benefit Norwalk Grassroots Tennis & Education (NGTE)\, an organization dedicated to helping “underserved children in Norwalk through tennis and education.” NGTE’s goal “is to ensure each of our kids is on a path towards success on the court\, in the classroom and in life.” Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. \nThis year’s concert will feature music by Beethoven\, Brahms and Chopin as well as selections by more contemporary composers Debussy\, Morton Gould and Dmitry Kabalevsky. The program is set by the choices of the performers\, some of whom select a piece because they heard it performed by another student in a previous concert and often with the guidance of Mrs. Cho\, whose primary goal as a teacher is “…to develop music lovers as well as good listeners in addition to being proficient pianists.” \nPreparation for the concert begins well in advance of the September performance\, as the students (with the help of sponsors and parents) choose the beneficiary organization. Intensive practices and late summer rehearsals place a demand on these already busy students\, several of whom play other instruments in symphonic\, jazz and marching bands or school\, local and regional orchestras. Performers need to transcend mere memorization of notes to wrestle with dynamics and tempo to develop a unique interpretation of a piece. Although all play regularly in recitals\, they concur that this is different because “people have paid to hear you play.” \nAs Sharon Kesselman\, one of the adults who will perform\, put it\, “Without the performance\, there would be not as much incentive to learn the piece. It’s about being nervous\, wanting to show off my best\, wanting not to fail —all of this helps with motivation to practice a piece that has already been practiced quite a bit\, and then practice it some more. It’s about the journey.” \nTickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting Kyong Hee Cho via email. \nPictured:  Top row–Sharon Kesselman\, Woongki Hong\, Colin Hong\, Jack Nanez\, Peyton Lauricella\, and teacher Kyong Hee Cho; bottom row–Alisyn Kercher and Claudia Nanez. Missing from the photo is student Martha West-Glynn.

Join us for a marvelous concert and fundraiser to benefit sound and visual modernizations and preservations at the Church. Childcare will be provided. \n“Bring the Music On!” will include a reception at 6 p.m. in Pilgrim Hall and a piano concert at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary\, given by our Director of Music Ministries\, Eugene Sirotkine\, internationally acclaimed pianist and conductor\, who will perform selections from the piano repertoire of Chopin\, Rachmaninov\, Liszt\, Glinka\, and a delightful “rag” by J. P. Johnson. In addition\, there will be a vocal performance by Rev. Dr. Anne Coffman. \nThe Church is a historical beacon in the community ~ an institution in the Town of Wilton. We want to be a good steward of our church\, not only the brick and mortar\, but also what happens inside. In today’s world\, the way you hear and see things is so important to your experience; we want everyone to be able to share the Message\, the Music\, the Fellowship\, and the Steeple Chimes. \nFirst\, we need to replace the current aging carillon so that the beautiful steeple chimes that we all love will live on! Next\, we are designing a modern integrated sound and visual system throughout the Church or wherever you are\, through live\, online streaming of all events. The new system will have leading-edge audio/video components\, completely integrated by wireless technology. Installed\, it will fit with the historical aesthetic and history of the Church. Finally\, there will be recording capability and Assistive Listening Devices. \n“Bring the Music On!” is just one of the funding plans for this project and is open to all in the community. Seating is limited. Tickets at $100 each are 100% tax deductible\, and may be purchased either online with your credit card or by check in the Church office 203.762.5591. \nThis will be a fun evening for a good cause. We hope you can attend or graciously support this project with a Donation. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Wilton Candlelight Concerts presents Les Delices
DESCRIPTION:Les Delices\, an early music ensemble\, will present a program for oboe and string quartet (on period instruments) entitled Mozart in Paris. \nReadings from Mozart’s own letters animate his time in the City of Light. \nMozart had expected to take Paris by storm in the spring of 1778\, but things very much did not go to plan. Despite a successful premiere of his Paris Symphony (K297) at the Concert Spirituel on June 18 and a few other small commissions (concertos for flute\, some ballet music)\, letters flew back and forth between Paris and Salzburg that made it clear that Mozart was flailing. Mozart felt misunderstood and his bad attitude was ultimately his undoing: a patriotic German through and through\, Mozart openly antagonized the French and impugned French taste. He offended patrons left and right and refused to heed social etiquette; he even clung to excuses that Paris was too large\, too filthy\, and too expensive to get around in order to do the networking necessary to get ahead. Moreover\, he took regular opportunities to insult his colleagues\, who could otherwise have been championing Mozart’s music at salons and on concert series that they oversaw. \nIn short\, those six months in Paris represented a critical\, if difficult moment for the brilliant young composer. Les Délices’s program seeks to create a context for Mozart’s time in the City of Light by setting his beloved Quartet for oboe and strings (K.370) alongside composers whose music was all the rage: Quintets by Luigi Boccherini and Christoph Willibald Gluck are featured along with more unusual fare such as a string quartet by Giuseppe Cambini and a solo by the celebrated French cellist Jean-Louis Duport. \nLes Délices (pronounced Lay day-lease) is “an early music ensemble with an avant-garde appetite” (New York Times). The group’s debut CD was named one of the “Top Ten Early Music Discoveries of 2009” (NPR’s Harmonia)\, and their performances have been called “a beguiling experience” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)\, “astonishing” (ClevelandClassical.com)\, and “first class” (Early Music America Magazine). Founded in Cleveland in 2009\, Les Délices’s performances on period instruments allows them to explore a rich tapestry of tone colors. Les Délices has been featured on WCPN\, WCLV and WKSU in Ohio\, WQXR in New York\, NPR’s syndicated Harmonia and Sunday Baroque\, and had their debut CD featured on the Audio-guide for a special exhibit at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Watteau\, Music\, and Theater). Les Délices made its New York debut before a sold-out audience at the Frick Collection in May 2010\, and has performed for Music Before 1800 (New York)\, Early Music in Columbus\, and at Miller Theater at Columbia University in recent seasons. \nFor more information\, call 203.762.3401 or 203.417.7203. \nSingle concert tickets (sold at the door)\nAdult $30\nSenior $25 \nStudents free

SUMMARY:The John Rhodes Jazz Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 43rd year\, the annual John Rhodes Jazz Symposium will be held Friday\, Feb. 22 at Wilton High School in The Little Theater. This event\, an assembly of high school jazz bands from across Fairfield County\, is known and loved for its display of enormous musical talent and rush of crowd-thrilling performances. The symposium is open to the public and free of charge. All are welcome. \nThe first of the two sessions will start at 3:30 p.m. and run until 6 p.m.; the second session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.. Following the student performances\, Fairfield County’s own Berkshire Jazz Orchestra will take the stage for a special guest performance that will include several Stan Kenton numbers. \nWilton High School band director Nick Loafman is looking forward to another year of inspiring jazz performances. “There is always so much talent on display at our annual jazz symposium. It is so fun and rewarding to hear so many students from different schools playing this great music\,” he says. \nParticipating in the symposium this year will be 10 bands from a number of Fairfield County high schools\, including Westhill\, King School\, Bethel\, Norwalk\, McMahon\, Newtown\, and Weston. Wilton High School will feature two of its jazz bands at the event—Jazz I and Jazz II. \nThe annual symposium is a cherished tradition for local jazz students. It offers them the opportunity to perform on stage as well as to receive critical feedback from an academic panel. “It is always excellent to have student musicians perform for each other in an educationally focused\, non-competitive setting\,” Loafman says. “The students always learn a great deal by performing and listening to each other.” \nIn total\, approximately 200 passionate young jazz musicians are expected to assemble for this event to share their talents and bring great entertainment to Wilton. Musical selections will range in style from traditional big band swing to Latin to ballads to contemporary jazz. \nAlso looking forward to this event is Troy Williams\, Wilton High School’s newest band director. This will be his first year at the symposium. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about this event\,” he says. “I’m excited to hear the other jazz bands coming from near and far.” \nLoafman and Williams are especially pleased to welcome back to Wilton the Berkshire Jazz Orchestra. This regional jazz group\, organized in 1987\, comprises active performers and educators from all over Fairfield County. \n“We feel so honored to have these great musicians perform here in Wilton for the students and the community\,” Loafman says. “If you love jazz\, then this will be a real treat.”
